4 Michel Charzat Maire du 20e arrondissement de Paris In these times in which we live, overshadowed as they are by the conflicts between peoples, religions and cultures, blinded as they are by the cult of hatred and individualism, creating any kind of instrument that can help to open a dialogue becomes an act of the greatest significance. Whether the approach we choose is political, cultural or religious, we need to find in our day-to-day activities, rather than often futile words, acts that represent moments of encounter and connection which can, over time, change the way things are, close over the fracture which today so dangerously divides the world. I think that the Jerusalem celestial, Jerusalem terrestrial project is such an act. Creating a shared land towards which we can steer our own route and, once arrived, sit down and weave the thread of a continuous dialogue using a common alphabet, a language that fortunately no conflict will ever be able to reduce to silence: Art. An exhibition that becomes a place of return, a space open to connection, a point of physical and spiritual union. A place of return but at the same time of departure, given that this is a touring exhibition that seeks to travel with a message of peace and tolerance. Into the hands of this ambassador I place my own humble but sincere best wishes for success. Jerusalem celestial, Jerusalem terrestrial GERUSALEMME CELESTE, GERUSALEMME TERRESTRE JéRUSALEM Cé LESTE, JéRUSALEM TERRESTRE We are four artists who have left a country that does not exist. Scattered around the world, enriched by other cultures, we keep to our own path and pursue our artistic quest. This project seeks to answer a question we ask ourselves about the artist’s place in the world. Siamo in quattro. Each of us has attempted to provide an answer. 7 Daniel Mintz 8 Born in 1961 in Riga, Latvia. B. JERUSALEM – Plateau of memory and oblivion stretching betwe en image and idea GERUSALEMME – Dalla memoria all’oblio, dall’immagine all’idea, una città sull’altopiano Jérusalem – D e la mémoire à l’ou bli, de l’image à l’idée, une ville su r u n plateau Ascending to Jerusalem, we are in the midst of a classical agricultural landscape. Rainwater springing from mountainsides is retained by agricultural terraces stratified over layers of sedimentary stone. That geological specificity has for ages sustained the development of a substantial spiritual and cultural center. An elevated plateau unfolds on arrival in Jerusalem. Water and stone sculpt a horizontal gravitational experience negated by the struggle of light and shadow that force one to raise the eyes towards the radiance of the unfor giving sky. One becomes accustomed to the piercing light, the complex landscape that is encountered. Patterns of stone walls, accumulated through the ages, overlaying other walls, without a single precarious stone. Accumulation and erasure are at work, ceaselessly entangling and weaving memory and oblivion into a single simultaneous image. This most improbable of cities carved a way straight into our banished souls. This memory has been carried far away to the heart of Bologna, Florence, Prague, and Moscow. Jerusalem as an Idea has sailed the rivers to the far edges of Russia. A new Jerusalem has flowered in far lands, all yearning to return to their origin. These returnings are present in the stone all around the old city: the Augusta Victoria, Anglican church, Scottish church and Maria Magdalena as Russia in miniature. All sincerely and silently in awaiting. Tutti silenziosamente in attesa. Walter Binyamin’s ‘Angel of History’ is engulfed in the whirlpool of departures and returns. A state of mind, of perpetual homecoming, a confluence of nostalgia and utopia, a reverberation between an image and an idea, the tragic gaze of an artist. 9 vladimir kara à Michel Grumbach For a painter, words are not the most important tools. Sometimes your hand is seized by an inexplicable feeling when it draws a line. On the space of a blank sheet you create a world that is unknown even to yourself until the moment you stand by your easel. Where do those images appear from, so real, so material, so earthy? Embodied within the rectangle of a picture, having taken on the most unrecognizable features, why do they suddenly elicit new feelings from you, something that stands behind them, the breath of another life. The process of creating a painting is a permanent balancing act between two worlds: taking in the unknown air of unattainable heights to embody it in a color, shape and volume, touching something that is bigger than yourself only to return it afterwards to the original element of its dark meanings. And every time you manage to complete this strange path from the earthly to the mystical, you feel the unity and indissolubility of the world of which you are a part. In 1980, Vera became a member of the Moscow Union of Artists. In 1988, she was awarded a scholarship by Israel’s Ministry of Education and Culture to study at the Paris Cité des Arts, where she has continued to return to paint over the years. She has had more than ten solo exhibitions in Israel and abroad. In Vera’s paintings, the boundaries between the object, the image and the background fade away – all is transformed into a spectacular surface of color, and the painting on the fabric is, as if alive, filled with a rhythmic movement of lines, blots and the explosive energy of color. Using expressive brush strokes, Vera transforms objects, frees them from reality, makes them abstract, but her paintings are always a product of her observations of nature. Painting for her is like a living creature, and also a window through which she seeks to express a sense of freedom. She is also a writer of poetry and prose both in Russian and in English, and has had several books published. www.artbyvera.com Permanent Exhibitions Galerie Ella, Jerusalem – www.ellagallery.com m a d o n n a , 2006, oil on textile, 145 x 80 cm 17 julia nitsberg A centripetal force draws me to Jerusalem, the original, primordial point of departure. This mental journey or pilgrimage is not surprising. Jerusalem has long been regarded ‘the navel of the earth’, the city where history’s most momentous events have been enacted. Devotion, religious symbolism and messianic hope are directed first and foremost to the earthly Jerusalem, a symbol of the gathering of the people in their Promised Land. A pilgrimage to Jerusalem brings one closer to its heavenly counterpart, the symbol of a new spiritual and moral order. Jerusalem is a true axis mundi, the point where heaven, earth and underworld meet. Jerusalem, however, is more than a geopolitical or cosmological location; it is also a spiritual, psychic and metaphysical center. The city reflects the world and vice versa: peace or instability in Jerusalem emanate to the rest of the world as if through an umbilical cord from the womb to the fetus. The duality of Jerusalem – above and below – and the connection between the two realms, is the general scheme of my installation, which embodies the theme of metamorphosis. From Solomon’s Temple of marble and gold, the new Temple is transformed into a temple of air. Faith and memory form the invisible structural core. La foi et la mémoire en sont le cœur structural invisible. s t u d y f o r k o t e l # 6 , 2007, monoprint on hand-made paper on board, etching ink, 65 x 97 cm 19 20 Julia Nitsberg Artist, Sculptor Born in Moscow, 1961 Resident in New York since 1980 Julia Nitsberg has held solo and joint exhibitions in New York City at the Snug, Harbor Cultural Center, the Newhouse, Center for Contemporary Art, Messineo, Wyman Pro jects, Profound Space, Pleiades, Gallery, Russian-American Cultural Center and other venues. Logically therefore, the biggest toyshop in Moscow – ‘Detski Mir’ (‘Children’s World’) – was in my mind nothing other than Holy Jerusalem. At that time it was located on Dzerjinski Square, next to KGB headquarters. All the children who went there dreamed of returning. It was the goal of all my wishes, but for some obscure reason my parents were not in a hurry to take me. As time went on, my wishes became desire. Finally, I could wait no longer; I overcame my fear and stepped forth. I went on foot, like any self-respecting pilgrim. There must have been an angel guiding me, for without one I would have gotten lost on the way. My sense of direction then, as now, has always let me down. Inside the ‘temple’, I allowed myself to take a relic. I was later to learn, at my trial before the Council of Pioneers, that it was in fact a battery. Evidently, the angel hadn’t stopped my hand from reaching out and as a consequence my poor mother had to attend ‘meetings for parents of young delinquents’. I had never seen a battery before, even less so the goods on display in front of everyone with no surveillance. After this, my wise grand father, Ari Hakhamov, advised me that if I didn’t want to end up as a slave in Egypt, I shouldn’t go too far beyond our yard. Apart from this, he was wont to say ‘next year in Jerusalem’ at any occasion. Undoubtedly, my guardian angel have hardly been older than me to be so naive as to think that it wouldn’t be any more complicated than this to ‘get me connected’. Instead, as a result of his plan, I found myself obliged to swallow the entire 364 articles of the penal code... 22 Da piccolo, ero sicuro che Dio fosse Babbo Natale. He went on to work in different filming groups at Mosfilm studios, then as a film set photographer there. In 1978, he enrolled in the Moscow State Union of Graphic Arts, which gave him official status as an independent artist. In the same year, the director Andrei Tarkovski invited him to follow him during the making of the film Stalker. In 1979, his photographs drew the attention of a Soviet photography group, and were exhibited at the Union of Graphic Arts. In 1985, he moved to Paris. After joining Magnum in 1988, he started actively to cover news and events for the international press – in particular Geo, Libération, Stern and The New York Times Magazine. As indicated in his first book, Sightwalk, Pinkhassov is drawn to the exploration of the singular detail, using reflections and distinctive lighting in a way that often comes close to visual abstraction. He has been a Magnum member since 1994. The purpose is to open a discussion about filmmaking and to discover new ways of telling stories. Here, we have used Julia Nitsberg’s text “Terrestrial Jerusalem, Celestial Jerusalem” to invite submissions and we have selected three films: Y LIVER (DAVID & RUGIADA LIVER) ANA APOSTOLSKA & MARIJA CONEVA GUILLAUME ROBERT. These three films are very different one from another in their approach to storytelling. Using allegory, the program looks at the notion of Judaism, the city of Jerusalem and what can be imagined beyond its boundaries. Marija Coneva was born in 1984 in post-communist Skopje in Macedonia, and graduated from art school in Sofia and Paris. She tries to use images and sound to break the boundaries of her perception and know ledge and to take a trip into the unknown. Ana Apostolska is a visual artist. Born in Skopje in former Yugoslavia (Rep. of Macedonia), she has lived and worked in Paris since 1985. Since completing her studies at the National Art School in Cergy, she has taken part in several exhibitions in France and abroad. In her work, she erases the boundaries between art and life, creating situations in which human beings are face-to-face with each other. y liver / Ashkénazi love is a video shot in two places – the first part in Paris, the second in Berlin. Luciano Inga Pin – Milan “Nergal”, from the Sumerian “nè.eri.gal”, means the “Authority of the Big City”, in other words “Hell”. Shooting took place at the end of the spring of 2005 on the outskirts of a European town. A small international airport, a golf course and a military camp occupy this area. Over the last 10 years, the topography has evolved and a town has grown there, covering the swamps and the fields. Nergal and Ran live on the threshold of this city. Extracts from texts, sometimes just simple sounds, emerge or dissolve in the soundtrack, which combines live recordings and musical samples. Whilst heterogeneous literary sources are intertwined (we can also hear an extract of an advertisement for The Palm promoting the delights of artificial islands built off the coast of Dubai), Nergal also contains a certain visual culture, fed by a contemporary history of cinema and art. This video work (like the two previous ones) in which geographical, temporal, symbolic and intimate spaces intermingle, presents a space of elliptical contours, of narratives and elegiac and fragile visions in which the imagination can roam free. Guillaume Robert lives and works in Lyon. Touching on cinema, theater and literature, the narratives and dramaturgic devices that he creates invent videographic forms. These videos are characterised by metamorphosis, sliding and dissolving. In 2006, he made the video Sx version 3 in the La Fonderie Theater (Le Mans) for sx.rx.Rx, a scenic project by Patricia Allio, for the Kunstenfestival in Brussels. The video Nergal, for which he is completing postproduction while Artist in residence in the RueilMalmaison School of Art, will be shown at the Maisonneuve art gallery (Paris). This video is part of his “Global garden ou les jardiniers suspendus” project. He is currently working on a project called “Angola”, while artist in residence in “Maisons Daura” at the G. Pompidou Art Center in Cajarc (Lot). He is a graduate of the “école supérieure d’art de Brest” and from the “Corso superiore di Arte visiva di la Fondazione Ratti”. 30 s pec ial tha n k s ANNALENA ARANGUREN Danièle et Victor Dibo-Cohen DANIEL MINZ TALIA MINZ YLI BOCKER HANA MANDELBAUM MARINA EPSTEIN PLIOUCHTCH MORENO BUCCI CARL STREHLKE PATRICK VEILLEROT HELENE GRUMBACH GAIA ET LEONARDO DUPONT SACHA&MASHA MICHEL COLAS IGOR MINAEV MARYSE TARAYRE ALEXANDRE REBBEKO ELISABETTA ARCHETTI PATRICK LIMB TONI MANZO OLGA GRYSDEVA JOSEPH HALL véronique hauptschein michèle et daniel kluger marc nahmias caroline ohayon hana et alain yamin florence brycman MARC COURT daniele greco LAURA BETTINI HULDA LIBERANOME Davide Caramella robert herman ISABELLE HéBEL T ra n s lat ions Julie Bouvard Oles MASLIOUK DEREK ANDERSEN MARIA KOUZINA Annalena ARANGUREN Dagmar ASSMANN mot.tiff jeffREY raymondt Dmitri Petrov cata lo g des ign polina khentov Fondation du JudaÏsme Francais Associazione s.d.
