WORKING DINNER
Meeting with Piero Gastaldo, Secretary General, Compagnia di San Paolo
The Compagnia di San Paolo, a private law foundation, is the hosting Institution for the AMMF program
in Turin. In 1563 a brotherhood was established in Turin by a group of Citizens wishing to help the poor
and fight usury: thus the Compagnia di San Paolo was foundeed. A few years later the Compagnia started
a non profit pawnbroking activity (the Monte di Pietà as it was known). A financial and credit business
developed as a result of the Monte’s activity and Compagna spent its profits to assist the needy. IN later
centuries the Monte di Pietà became an actual credit institution which was to turn into one of the largest
Italian Banking groups, the Istituto Bancario San Paolo di Torino. Charity work has continued along side
consistently with changing needs of society. Following the new legislation introduced by the Amato-Carli
Bill in 1991, re-organisation was required:the Compagnia became a foundation, and transferred its
banking activities to a limited company – The Istituto Bancario San Paolo di Torino S.p.A. – and focussed
on its commitment to social development. In 2007 the main event affecting the Compagnia’s portfolio this
year was the merger of the Sanpaolo Imi S.p.A. into Banca Intesa. The new bank is the national market
leader
