“Alle sei sull’isola” è una raccolta di foto, scritti da mail ed esercizi preparatori legati alla
Performance “Miracoli Medici (Holy Unmercenaries)”.
E’ il diario che narra l’incontro tra due artisti-performer che provengono da mondi
lontani: Italia e California e che decidono di unire le proprie energie creative pur essendo
così diversi. Nasce tutto come un gioco con lo scambio di mail accompagnate da poesie
ed indovinelli e diventa una sfida alla distanza e alle 14 ore di viaggio che separano i due
continenti in cui i protagonisti vivono. E’ il dietro le quinte di un evento dove il rituale
performativo è forse solo un pretesto per un ulteriore incontro e uno scambio di idee.
Trovandomi davanti all’impossibilità di restituire la magia di un luogo e di un’azione
percepibile solo se vissuta in prima persona assistendo all’evento performativo ho
deciso di lasciare allo spettatore solo una traccia su cui costruire una diversa memoria,
a ciascuno la sua.
ON THE ISLAND AT SIX

Series of 10 writings and photos from Performance, 24 X 35 cm each
“On the island at six” is a collection of writings, emails, pictures and preparatory
exercises for the Performance “Medical Unmercenaries” that took place on the island la
Giudecca in Venice.
It is the diary of the encounter between two performance artists coming from two
faraway countries: Italy and California. They decide to unify their creative spirits
although they are so different.
It starts like a game with the mutual exchange of mails, poems, riddles and it culminates
with the Performance ritual.
It is the behind the scenes of an event where the Performance is maybe just an excuse for
another meeting and a powerful exchange of ideas.
For it is impossible to reproduce the magic of a performative act that took place in a
certain time and place the artist decided to leave the spectator only a trace for him to
construct his own memory and perception.

An installation performance about desire and escape
with Italian performance artist Federica Bruni and
California performance artist Justin Charles Hoover.
These two twin brothers Cosma and Damiano were ancient
Christian miracle workers who grafted the leg of a
recently deceased Etheopian man to a white man’s body.
Since my leg was broken and in an all black walking
boot, and since we were in their historic cloister, it
was appropriate to begin the performance as if I was
their subject, granted the gift of health and required
to make my escape beyond desire and physical space.

- Abbiamo la voce uguale, a volte ci penso.
- Secondo me la mia bambina ti ha sorriso perché pensava fossi io…
- Ti ricordi quando facevamo gli scherzi telefonici ai tuoi fidanzati? Ci cascavano tutti!
Cresciamo nello stesso ambiente familiare e sociale, ma da adulti prendiamo strade
opposte e ci ignoriamo.
Stiamo recitando la stessa frase, con la stessa voce, ma il nostro modo di essere, di
pensare ed agire è completamente differente.

They all fell for it!
We grow up in the same family and social environment, but once we are adults we take
different paths in life and we tend to ignore each other.
We are saying the same sentence at the same time, but the way we are or we think or
we act is totally different.

Video ritratto di Betty St. George, personaggio fittizio creato dalla fantasia di un
ragazzo americano che, indossando i suoi abiti, impersonifica un suo alter ego
femminile, una versione postmoderna di un supereroe che ha come missione quella
di sfidare lo streotipo del macho.
Il lavoro attiva così una riflessione sull’identità: chiunque in ogni momento, anche
solo servendosi della giusta dose di ironia, può attuare nella propria vita una piccola
rivoluzione e contrastare le regole sociali che trova oprrimenti.

Video portrait of Betty St. George, a character invented by an American student while
he was in college. From simple fun this became soon his other identity with a sharp
personality, a superhero with a mission: to destabilize the figure of “the American
bro”.
We all can be heroes in our personal lives maybe by just subverting a few rules or just
by looking at them with the right amount of irony.

Una studentessa di legge calpesta voluminosi libri di diritto seguendo un misterioso
percorso.
L’azione in sè è priva di senso così come non ha alcun significato per un bambino
straniero la lettura dell’articolo 4 della Costituzione Italiana.
Il video evidenzia la contraddizione che si prova davanti a certe norme perchè troppo
complicate e in contrasto con la vita reale.

A law school student tramples on big law books following a mysterious way that leads
nowhere.
The action itself has no meaning as well as it makes no sense for a foreign child the
reading of the article 4 by the Italian Constitution.
The video underlines the contradiction you could feel in front of some laws because they
are too complex and not realistic.

Una donna, un uomo, una cena al lume di candela.
Ho chiesto ad una coppia nella realtà di rappresentare alcune situazioni in cui si
evidenzino tensioni nelle relazioni tra due persone come la difficoltà di affermare
la propria identità nel nucleo familiare o le ipocrisie e i compromessi quotidiani.
Le loro proposte sono state estremizzate grazie ad una scenografia teatrale.
Con questo video ho voluto scoprire cosa si nasconde, a volte, dietro alle foto che
popolano le nostre case.

A woman, a man, a romantic dinner by candlelight.
I asked a real life couple to represent some typical situations of tensions in a love
relationship as for example the difficulty of affirming oneself in the family context
or the everyday compromises they have to face.
Their proposal had been analyzed and extended thank to a dramatic setting.
With this video I would like to show what it is sometimes hidden behind the happy
pictures in our houses.

THE DAY I DECIDED TO THROW AWAY PROZAC

Ho chiesto ad un campione di 53 persone della città di Santa Cruz in California di
rispondere a questa domanda: “Che parola o frase ti piace veramente?”
Lo spettatore può ascoltare le varie risposte registrate e fatte scorrere in loop tramite
una cassa posta in un angolo.
Questo lavoro suggerisce un rimedio alternativo per curare il senso di solitudine che
spesso si prova nella nostra società.
Cerchiamo di colmare il vuoto con il superlavoro o con il tenersi sempre occupati, ma
a volte tutto questo non basta.

Sound installation
I asked a sample of 53 people in the city of Santa Cruz, California to answer to this
question: “Which word or phrase do you really like?”
The viewer can sit on a red pillow and listen to the various answers recorded and
played in loop.
This piece suggests an alternative healing practice to the sense of loneliness we often
feel in our society. We try to fill the void keeping ourselves busy and productive all the
time, but sometimes is not enough.

Delle scatole di metallo di varie dimensioni e forme vengono esposte su un tavolo in una
via frequentata della città. I passanti sono invitati a prendere una scatola e a riempirla
con qualcosa di importante per loro. Qualcosa che rappresenti un loro segreto o un
ricordo che vogliono tramandare ai posteri. Potrà trattarsi di un oggetto, un biglietto
scritto o anche del cibo.Successivamente ciascuno potrà sotterrare la scatola in un posto
a propria scelta. Questa diventerà una “capsula del tempo” e rimarrà sottoterra a tempo
indeterminato. Ciascuno in qualsiasi momento potrà ricordarsi della scatola e
dissotterarla e magari non la troverà più o scoprirà quella di qualcun altro.
Il processo viene documentato con foto delle persone e degli oggetti da loro scelti.

MESSAGE IN A BOX

The idea is to display a certain amount of metal boxes, of different shapes and sizes, on
a table.
People will have the chance to take a box and either place a loved object inside them
or something that they shared from childhood. Another way of interacting with one’s
box could be to write a sentence and use the box as a bottle to deliver a message to an
unknown recipient. Subsequently people will bury their boxes in the ground anywhere
they wish. The boxes will lie underground for an undetermined time period. People will
eventually forget about their existence or might remember them only after a considerable
amount of time giving them the function of “time capsule”.
Ideally I would like for them to go back and look for their boxes and maybe, in the process, find someone elses box.

along with a written note on the reason for such choice on th website:

Incontro John da Taiwan in Romania.
Dopo un mese che ci conosciamo scopro che il suo vero nome è Ting Wei.
Mi racconta questa storia. La sua professoressa di Inglese un giorno entra in classe con
un recipiente e ciascuno studente è invitato a pescare un pezzo di carta da lì. Su ogni
biglietto c’è un nome, il loro nuovo nome Occidentale.
Questo lavoro parla di immigrazione e della sensazione che si prova nel dover adottare
una nuova identità per essere accettati in un paese diverso dal proprio.

I met John from Taiwan in Romania, Europe.
After a month I discovered his real name was Ting Wei.
He told me this story. His English teacher one day showed up in class with a container
and every student had to pick up a piece of paper from that. In them there was their new
Western English name.
This piece is about travelling and how does it feel to adopt a new identity.
Many immigrant people are forced to choose new names upon entering some countries
or they chose to do so later because of the racism that their given names attract. This
work wants to make you think about race and coercion as well as the power of naming.
