PACKAGING DESIGN LA BOTTIGLIA VEGETALE E ALTRE STORIE THE VEGETABLE BOTTLE AND OTHER STORIES Sonia Pedrazzini Le nuove frontiere degli imballaggi per alimenti: ipertecnici, multifunzionali, sostenibili, ma anche comunicativi ed emozionali. In ogni caso, virtuosi The new frontiers in food packaging: hyper technical, multifunctional, sustainable, but also communicative and provocative. In any case, virtuous 80 giorni e si dissolve senza lasciare traccia. Sushi Shop is the new way of conceiving Japanese cooking. Debuting in 1998 in France, but now present in many countries, including Italy, the chain presents a new vision of food delivery and take away. It offers all the basic recipes of traditional Japanese cooking, but creates new and surprising suggestions by blending them with international cooking. In keeping with the image of luxury take away, the packaging has to be important, and even more so with a designer label. As the ad states, the bottle is the first and only bottle in the world made in vegetable based Ingeo™ plastic with the same characteristics as the synthetic material, lightweight, robust, practical. Studies done have found that this biopolymer does not leach substances, therefore the contents remain as fresh and pure as if bottled in glass. After drinking, it can be sent to segregated disposal of organic material and to composting. A test conducted byAMIAT Azienda Multiservizi Igiene Ambiéntale Torino (Turin waste management services] found that after only 8 weeks, no traces remained of the Sant'Anna Bio Bottle. The package can contain 6 bottles of water for transportation. The application is an innovative method that replaces the traditional 'bundle' and makes it possible to assemble two or more bottles using horizontal rings and with a vertical crisscrossed binding that doubles as a handle. With this new innovation, every package uses only three grams of binding materials, dramatically decreasing by en times the use of polluting material. servizio e fa diventare il contenitore un oggetto intelligente e attivo, anzi smart. This is all it takes for complete decomposition of the Bio Bottle, the innovative new water bottle for Sant'Anna water - an excellent result, when you consider that a normal PET bottle takes a thousand years to disappear from the face of the earth! Bio Bottle is only one of many examples of virtuous food packaging. Created to be sustainable in every way, it is the first and only bottle in the world made without a single drop of oil. The packaging is 100% vegetable, created with a s p e c i a l biodegradable polymer called Ingeo™ derived from fermentation of corn sugar and vegetable starch and therefore compostable: after eight weeks, there is no trace of the container left. Quite an impressive result, in a time when one of the most pressing emergencies is environmental sustainability and packaging is a key element in the battle. The Piedmont company Fonti d Vinadio has used the Bio Bottle to turn a crisis into an opportunity, demonstrating again that the packaging industry - especially food - must specialize to keep pace with the times, following and often anticipating social, historic and demographic changes. Contemporary packaging is a complex mix - hyper technical, multifunctional, intelligent but aLso communicative, interactive and provocative. It mirrors our multifaceted society. So, while there are those who develop their packaging with an eye primarily toward technological innovations or the environment, there are others who focus on the services and make the packaging an inte Ligent and active receptacle, in other words, smart Packaging is smart when, for example, it is self-heat- 42 Ottagono Settembre I September 2011 l'immagine del Topolino Intenditore, già mascotte e forte riferimento della comunicazione televisiva. To create the graphics communication of Parmareggio, FutureBrand conducted a study that underscores the visual equity of the brand (focusing on graphic elements already present! and at the same time, defines the new actions to spruce up the image of the brand and increase the family feeling, i.e., the sense of reassurance based on perceiving recognizable and familiar elements. So, designers decided to introduce the popular mouse, Stuart Little, to the Parmareggio package, a recognizable mascot and strong reference for television communications. Thanks to clever handling of the materials and forms, these packages heighten practicality and simplify the life of the consumer. There is also less 'complicated' packaging in terms of the performance but far and away more glamorous and seductive. Speaking of food, food must first appeal to the eyes. When well designed, even packaging can whet our appetites. Add a little charm and the deal is sealed. The Red Box by the Sushi Shop - created by Kenzo Takada (the founder of the Kenzo brand) looks like a luxury face powder but instead, it holds 36 delightful treats as beautiful to look at as they are to eat. The finely detailed packages by the New York designer Louise Fill elicit a flavour of the past, real flavour, traditional appearance, but also a contemporary touch in the visual composition, in the graphics, in the colours. More minimalist, despite its positioning in large-scale retail, is the packaging for Rigamonti bresaola created by the Italian FutureBrand. The company selected an almost Anglo-Saxon aesthetic, with an understated graphic that is less aggressive than the Italian competition. It reinforces the brand image and the uniqueness of the product which is elevated to chic. Elegant hand feel and a youthful spirit characterize the work of LoSiento, an 44 Ottagono Settembre I September 2011 BORJA MARTI NEZ Sandro Desìi 12006-2011) Sandro Desìi è una piccola azienda italiana con sede a Barcellona che produce pasta e gelati artigianali. Sandro Desii is a small Italian company that operates out of Barcelona, making designer pastas and ice creams. To optimize the product visibility on the shelf and to uniquely identify the individual items, LoSiento has worked on the image of the brand and on the design of the individual containers, numbering each package and using a colour to identify each flavor. The package speaks for itself, transmitting an image and dynamic and fun. The ice creams come in an elegant black square container which features a colourful scoop of ice cream, in a unique colour and number to differentiate every flavour. The delivery truck was customized with an ominous warning "No eating ice cream while driving." PACKAGING DESIGN up-and-coming Catalan agency which has made experimentation the Leit motif of its work. A scoop of ice cream becomes a cube, the alphabet 'multiplies in size by four', a poster in memory of M i c h a e l J a c k s o n is made up of chocolate candies...one has to see their site to believe it. In short, designing packaging today is a job that involves many different skills which also include the participation of players with very different needs, balancing functionality and aesthetic, technology and sustainability, 'packaging design' should a l ways be a starting point for every good design and should become the methodological path that sets packaging at the centre of a deep, integrated research. It is impossible to describe any more here.
