Aquileia was founded by the Romans in the year 181
B.C. Due to its strategic position and its port, Aquileia
soon became an important centre of cultural and
commercial exchange between North Europe and the
Mediterranean Sea and grew to become the ninth city in
size and importance of the Roman Empire.
This exhibition was created in 2009 and since then has
travelled around Europe explaining the history and the
role of Aquileia in the Roman Empire.
An event promoted by Mitteleuropa Cultural Association
in partnership with Fogolâr Furlan d’Irlanda and Italian
Institute of Culture and in collaboration with Ente Friuli
nel Mondo, Province of Udine, Regione Autonoma Friuli
Venezia Giulia and Turismo Friuli Venezia Giulia.
With the participation of Paolo Petiziol president of
Mitteleuropa, a non-profit organization set up in 1974
in Friuli with the purpose of promoting a social, cultural
and economic dialogue among different European ethnic
groups and cultures.
