Description: Per Viam, Pilgrims' Routes in Action" is the title of the European project coordinated by European Association of the Via
Francigena Ways and founded by the European Union, within the preliminary Action "Sustainable Tourism".
The projectconcernsthe via Francigena and the other trans-national pilgrimage routes certified by the Council of Europe,
seen as means of cultural and sustainable tourism development and as community participation in the enhancement of
European cultural diversity.
Thanks to Institutions, to European networks and to local organizations, the project aims to create a European network
of pilgrimage routes officially recognized by the Council of Europe: the Via Francigena, the Santiago de Compostela
Pilgrims' Routes, the Saint Michael Ways, the Route of Saint Olav Ways, the Saint Martin of Tours Route
Objectives:
•
•
•
•
•
Placing the "Via Francigena" tourism project on a European level,
Creating a territorial brand of the Via Francigena and of the other pilgrimage routes certified by the Council of Europe,
Connecting the Via Francigena with the values linked to culture and sustainable tourism,
Creating a European network of actors involved in the development of trans-national pilgrimage routes,
Supporting economical development and investment opportunities in tourism in the territories crossed by the Via
Francigena and by the other pilgrimage routes.
Methods: The partners will cooperate within the framework of a consortium to promote a responsible and sustainable approach
toward cultural tourism along the Via Francigena. Their joint action willaim to improve the visibility, the communication,

Innovative content: The different target groups will benefit from the project through the sharingof good practice, dialogue and scientific
research. As explained before, the project answers the need to create an integrated governance model for the Via
Francigena and the pilgrimage routes certified by the Council of Europe. It will come from the possibility of strengthening
the actors' network by increasing their ability to work togheter in order to vgive value to the Via Francigena. The impact
of this will highlightthe importance of a strong and dynamic partnership aimed at working on cross themes which
concern sustainable tourism and the Via Francigena under an institutional, geographic, cultural, literary, historical and
economic profile. The strengthening of institutional players who work togetherin order to share methods and their
applicationsrepresents the starting point towards the future andto widenthe consciousness of Via Francigena as a
potential"tourist product".
Results: The project aims at promoting and reinforcing the European cooperation among public and private partners involvedat
all governance levels concerning the cultural-touristic routes of the Via Francigena.
