The Sanctuary Lamp will burn in
memory of Anna Deeb from Saturday, August 20th through Friday, August 26th requested by
her husband, George.
Over the past couple of weeks, we had masonry work
done to the Rectory and the two sets of Church stairs,
and some of the crack Church foundation was repaired. We are grateful to Gerardi Construction
Company for helping to accomplish these repairs.
I am sure that you have noticed that over the past several weeks; the parish has been running a deficit of
over one thousand dollars a week. I ask each to do
what they are able to help us close the weekly deficit.

A NOTE FROM FR. WAYNE
In the gospel account for today,
after Saint Peter makes his profession of faith; namely, ―You
are the Christ, the Son of the
living God,‖ Jesus gives him the
keys to the kingdom. The key
given to Saint Peter is the foundation of the Sacrament of
Confession. Through this sacrament, the priest in the apostolic line traced back to Saint
Peter offers forgiveness of sins in Jesus’ name.
The handing over the keys was in fact the establishment of the Sacrament of Confession. What a
beautiful gift Christ has given to the Church, the
ability to have our sins forgiven. The sacrament
gives us the opportunity to begin again. If you
have not been to confession, then take an opportunity this week to go. It is as simple as saying,
―Father, do you have a minute for a confession?‖
Trust me, it will make a world of difference.

Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A)
'Oh, the Depths!'
"Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!" Paul exclaims in today's Epistle. Today's Psalm, too, takes up the triumphant note of joy
and thanksgiving. Why? Because in the Gospel, the
heavenly Father reveals the mystery of His kingdom
to Peter. With Peter, we rejoice that Jesus is the
anointed Son promised to David, the one prophesied
to build God's temple and reign over an everlasting
kingdom. What Jesus calls "my Church" is the
kingdom promised to David's son. As we hear in today's First Reading, Isaiah foretold that the keys to
David's kingdom would be given to a new master,
who would rule as father to God's people.
Jesus, the root and offspring of David, alone holds
the kingdom's keys. In giving those keys to Peter,
Jesus fulfills that prophecy, establishing Peter - and
all who succeed him - as holy father of His Church.
His Church, too, is the new house of God - the spiritual temple founded on the "rock" of Peter, and built
up out of the living stones of individual believers.

GET A LIFE! A PRAYER LIFE THAT IS. . .
In a previous post, I wrote about how prayer helps
each of us develop a closer relationship with God. It
always seems to come back to that same question:
What is prayer? Simply, talking to God.
Sometimes we think of prayer primarily as asking
God for something, in it’s proper meaning, prayer is a
conversation with God or His saints. Just as we cannot
have a conversation with another person unless that
person can hear us, the act of prayer is the actual recognition that God is here present. In praying, we recognize God’s presence, which draws us closer to Him.
What are the Five Types of Prayer?
Thanksgiving – giving God the thanks He so
richly deserves.
Petition – perhaps the most common; making a
request of God, for ourselves, family or
friends
Persevering Prayer – those petitions that each of
us holds deep in our hearts
Intercession – Very similar to petition, but prayers
of intercession are for others and includes the
saints
Meditation – we say nothing, simply meditate on
God’s love and mercy.

Abraham was called "the rock" from which the children of Israel were hewn. And Peter becomes the
rock from which God raises up new children of God.
The word Jesus uses - "church" (ekklesia in Greek) was used in the Greek translation of the Old Testament for the "assembly" of God's children after the
exodus. His Church is the "assembly of the firstborn," established by Jesus' exodus. Like the Israelites, we are baptized in water, led by the Rock, and
fed with spiritual food. Gathered at His altar, in the
presence of angels, we sing His praise and give
thanks to His holy name.

SECONDO DELLE LETTURE DI OGGI
Gloria a Dio nell'alto dei cieli e pace in terra agli
uomini di buona volontà. Noi ti lodiamo, ti
benediciamo, ti adoriamo, ti glorifichiamo, ti
rendiamo grazie per la tua gloria immensa, Signore
Dio, Re del cielo, Dio Padre onnipotente Signore,
Figlio unigenito, Gesù Cristo, Signore Dio, Agnello di
Dio, Figlio del Padre; tu che togli i peccati del
mondo, abbi pietà di noi; tu che togli i peccati del
mondo, accogli la nostra supplica; tu che siedi alla
destra del Padre, abbi pietà di noi. Perché tu solo il
Santo, tu solo il Signore, tu solo l'Altissimo Gesù
Cristo, con lo Spirito Santo nella gloria di Dio Padre.
Amen.
CHI È GESÙ CRISTO
Anziché seguire, nella nostra riflessione, la pista dei
primato di Pietro, che sembra suggerita dalla prima
lettura e dal vangelo, preferiamo fermarci sulla domanda cruciale di Gesù: «Voi chi dite che io sia?»,
e sulla risposta-professione di fede di Pietro.
Il racconto di quella che si è soliti chiamare la
«confessione di Cesarea» introduce nei sinottici un
passo abbastanza omogeneo che riveste particolare
importanza.

Dal libro del profeta Isaia
Così dice il Signore a Sebna, maggiordomo del palazzo:
«Ti toglierò la carica,
ti rovescerò dal tuo posto.
In quel giorno avverrà che io chiamerò
il mio servo Eliakìm, figlio di Chelkìa; lo
rivestirò con la tua tunica, lo cingerò della
tua cintura e metterò il tuo potere nelle sue mani.
Sarà un padre per gli abitanti di
Gerusalemme e per il casato di Giuda.
Gli porrò sulla spalla la chiave della casa
di Davide: se egli apre, nessuno chiuderà;
se egli chiude, nessuno potrà aprire.
Lo conficcherò come un piolo in luogo solido
e sarà un trono di gloria per la casa di suo padre».
Bartolomeo di Cana «figlio dell’agricoltore», uno dei
primi discepoli di Gesù, sarebbe quel Natanaele
«Israelita genuino in cui non c’è frode» (Gv 1,45-51)
che era passato da uno scetticismo ironico e quasi
offensivo («da Nazareth, può venire qualcosa di
buono?») a un atto di fede ardente: «Maestro, tu sei il
Figlio di Dio, tu sei il Re d’Israele!». E’ nell’elenco
dei 12 testimoni delle « cose maggiori» del Figlio
dell’Uomo sul quale vide «i cieli aperti» (Mt 10,3).
Non si sa nulla di preciso della sua attività. Molte
fonti parlano di diversissime regioni, e ciò potrebbe
far pensare che abbia effettivamente avuto un vasto
raggio di azione. Il martirio subito — essere scorticato
vivo — figura nel costume penale dei Persiani. E’
venerato a Roma nell’isola Tiberina.
