INTERNET FESTIVAL 2013
CLAUDIO GIUA
Director of the Internet Festival
Yes, the reinvention of interaction and communication, the chance to study, express
yourself, exchange experiences like never
before, shattered businesses, innovative
ways of working which destroy as many old
professions as it creates new ones. You will
find all this at the 2013 Pisa Internet Festival, yes. But enthusiasm will envelop each
and every presentation and panel: researchers creating evermore powerful and sophisticated platforms, entrepreneurs (who are
often extremely young) transforming their
ideas into services and products, old masters finding real “things” in the ideas they
jotted down on paper decades ago, young
people tackling high-level experiments with
technology.

SUBJECT AREAS
Citizens, Makers and Tellers
are the Festival’s three main
subject areas; you can
choose what you would like
to see according to your
interests. The 14C course
for Citizens will explore how
the Net generates social
innovation, improving the
quality of life of citizens,
users and, at the same
time, the protagonists of the
technological innovations
which will change our daily
lives. 14M for Makers is for
people who see the Net as
an incubator for ideas and
opportunities in terms of
both work and the economy.
14T for Tellers is going
to analyse the masses of
information flow, generated
from the huge amounts of
data which is poured into the
Net on a daily basis. T-Tours
are tutorials discussing the
spreading of digital culture in
an educational, formative and
fun way. By looking to Shape
the Future, we are going to
discover scenarios of the
near future. And then there
will be films, shows, music
and exhibitions… Look out
for the figures of Googleo
Galilei, Steve J. Marconi,
Mark Gutenberg, Obamo
Lincoln and Maria Wikissori
and come and join us at the
IF 2013.

SHAPING THE FUTURE
INTERNET 4 MAKERS
The future is a solid:
graphene, as thick as
an atom, harder than
a diamond, incredibly
flexible and a super-fast
conductor.
It will become a powerful part of our daily
lives. But how?
We will find out on Friday 11th October at the
IF 2013.
What will the computers
of the future be like?
Invisible, wearable, protectors and mirrors of
the human mind.
Things that have never
been seen before on Saturday 12th October.
Friday 11th focuses on the
web, a vehicle which can
be used to update old,
traditionally offline, business practices, such as
publishing: from paper to
digital and from blogging
to a potential business.
Followed by “Adriano
(Olivetti)’s Memoirs” to
understand how the web
can offer you the chance
to update and talk once
again about historical
moments of innovation
and change. On Saturday
12th, the protagonists of
the Net, an excellent environment for building new
businesses and a tool for
innovating existing business models and now
obsolete supply chains
as well as Big Data that
accelerates new and old
business practices.

T-TOUR
Friday 11th, a colourful
and tasty day discussing rural life, innovation
in agricultural production and the establishment of new and existing eating behaviours.
On Saturday the 12 th the
“civic” use of media,
hackers and internet
ethics will be explored
in a continuous dialogue which will blur
the boundaries between the “apocalyptics” and the “conformists” in a bubbling
debate. Is the internet a
risk for personal freedom or is it the best
possible means of democratic participation?
Friday 11th, a whole
day devoted to women
and the way they are
represented through
and on the net. Topical subjects such as
femicide will also be
discussed.
On Saturday 12th the
near future will make
an entrance. Nowadays
it appears possible to
predict future political, social, economic
and urban scenarios
by managing the treasure trove of Big Data.
Prevention, prediction,
safety, control: a day
at the IF 2013 hovering
somewhere between
Minority Report and
Big Brother.
We all use Facebook, have
an email address, search
for information on Google
or for a song on YouTube
and we all think we know
how to use the internet. But
what is our actual grasp of
the web?
T-Tours at the Internet Festival are entirely devoted
to providing education and
training in response to the
following suggestion: to
get to grips with resources
and technologies related to
the web, making them tools
to improve our knowledge,
studies and work but also,
and arguably in particular,
to help us become savvy
internet users.
From Thursday 10th there
will be four days of interactive tutorials, seminars,
workshops, exhibitions,
games and conferences in
the name of the Digital Revolution.

AEON S'N
Aeon Soon. Eternity in a moment. A moment that turns into eternity. The roads of space/time.
Faster computers, more elaborate programmes, faster cars, communication in qbit, but our blood
continues to run at the same speed. Speed is our passport to the eternal moment.
Aeon Soon is a multimedia work following time as it is perceived by those living inside it. Fast/slow.
Aeon Soon is a journey where time stands still and accelerates. Where arriving is leaving. Where
movement appears to be stopping and the fastest action is static. The result appears to be the same.
Do you see wheat being moved by a train, or a train travelling through a completely still wheat field?
Is the observer still? At the top of the tower time is faster.
The observer is a machine/man. Wheat is the universe. A train is speed. Fast/slow. Two journeys, two
corridors of space/time, random/run, “faster faster slower slower” screams the person observing wheat.
Stop and enjoy the speed of events or run to try and beat evolution? The land and its images are
losing the idea of time and they are being infinitely dissected into a perfect cycle of micro and
macroscopic events.
Nothing is faster than light. But light, if you observe it, appears to be still.
The time limbo between speed and statis is the fourth dimension of aeon soon, an eternal moment
where the observer finds refuge to escape from the impetuous wind of time.

EXHIBITIONS & SHOWS
A. Santarlasci’s personal exhibition is opening with
an unusual site-specific work: he is illuminating the
bell tower of San Michele and some of the window
slits of the convent cells.
Discrete and almost imperceptible during the day
(when the tones are kept at a consistent level save
for some slight changes enlivening the work), the
illumination becomes increasingly more visible as
the daylight fades.
The aim of this theatre is not to illuminate or
represent something, but to keep the blue colour of
the daylight sky going well into the night.
In some original and past works - which all perfectly
balance concept with emotion - Santarlasci unites
subjects and motifs running through his work: the
relationship between the natural and the artificial,
the microcosm and the macrocosm, inside and
outside and vision and representation.

On the first day of the Festival, visitors will be able to
immerse themselves in places of historical interest which
are now either closed to the public or no longer exist.
Interactive tools about the diagnostics and conservation
of artwork, platforms for sharing and collaboratively
managing knowledge, 3D acquisition technologies and
virtual restoration will be made available to the public.

On the second day of the Festival, innovative interactive
graphic tools for studying and analysing scientific data
will be made available to the public: virtually immerge
yourself inside the CERN CMS experiment in Geneva,
passing from the macroscopic to the microscopic to
analyse collisions between subatomic particles.
The visit ends with the virtual reality system CAVE 3D
from DREAMSLab, which recreates immersive and
reconfigurable virtual environments.

Innovation Ecology
(Installation: video and generative sound,
real-time BigData, Natural Language Analysis)
In what terms is innovation spoken about in Italy? Who is speaking
about it? And where? What are the relationships between the
people having these conversations?
As we interact on global social networking sites we are generating
new public spaces used to express ourselves, work, consume,
make decisions and relate to one another on a daily basis. Markets
consist of millions of texts that can be used for geolocalization,
analysis and visualisation. A new human topography is emerging,
a landscape of information (infoscape), and with this the chance
to create and use new maps and original tools to understand the
desires, visions and attitudes of citizens by opening new spaces
for businesses, urban planning, public politics and social cohesion.
Innovation Ecology displays the Italian ecosystem of innovation,
showing how it emerges out of conversations happening in real
time on social networks.
Walk show – Nomad Conversations
with Carlo Infante
A walk around the Festival, equipped with radioheadphones to connect to the internet. Like a “smart
swarm” we will debate innovation in the local area
and comment on several of this year’s IF events:
from Rural Hub to The Net, a feminine noun, to The
Memoirs of Adriano (Olivetti), we will also pass by
the Palazzo dei Congressi (housing the Smartup
area) to say ‘hi’. A walk show around various Festival
venues. Meeting point, Gipsoteca di Arte Antica.

The event promoted and organised by the cultural
association Civico29Lab – Incubatore Culturale was born
out of a need to show how so-called “Contemporary Pop
Art” reinterprets, influenced by new means of expression
and communication, changing times and society. The
Tuscan artist Aleandro Roncarà shows us his human
side, by using a direct language bursting with intense
colours and humour. His Pop Art could be described
as user-friendly: in the same way the average user is
introduced to computers and the internet, iconically and
intuitively “protected” from any technical information,
Roncarà’s acrylics on canvas introduce us and bring
us closer to an interior world, “protecting us” from any
conceptual information.

DivinLavoro
Storytelling in three canticas
Is Italy still a republic founded on work? Is it possible, every
now and again, for the word “work” not to be associated with
the lack of it and the resulting depression? Does work still
occupy the same position in our society? What jobs will there
be in the future?
DivinLavoro is delving into this ‘dark forest’ of questions,
without claiming to be able to give any answers. For three
consecutive evenings many stories about work will be given
a voice; using the structure of Dante’s Divine Comedy and
following Virgil as an inspirational guide, we will explore the
current job market through the Inferno, Purgatory and Paradise
of work itself.
DivinLavoro is a dramatic storytelling, where ordinary and
exceptional stories will be sung in turn by exceptional singers.
There will be actors, amongst others. Intellectuals, journalists,
musicians and designers will make up the chorus, talking about
honest problems and giving examples that otherwise would not
have the chance to emerge and be told. The internet is a tool for
collecting and a tool for talking.

A town of diaries
The Fondazione Archivio Diaristico of Pieve Santo Stefano asked Mario Perrotta to transform
his book Il paese dei diari (A town of diaries) into a piece of storytelling, which talks about the
activities of their cultural institution in an unconventional way.
The book discusses some of the typical diaries that have been preserved in the collection in
Pieve. In the spirit that has become the trademark of the Archive - where all diaries are welcome
and valued - the play closes with a reading (a different one each performance) from a diary of a
person sitting in the room, or, in the case of the deceased, a relative to pay homage.

Paolo Angeli
Paolo Angeli is one of jazz’s best kept secrets.
This Sardinian guitarist has the skills to conjure up beautiful music unlike any you have ever heard
before, and all from one instrument. In his most recent record “Sale Quanto Basta” the metaphor of
cooking, measuring ingredients by eye and by taste, encapsulates the poetics of a musician mapping
out a perfect journey between the different coastlines of the Mediterranean.
Inside a huge copper jug full of salt, Angeli transports a set lasting more than an hour to be shared
out at every port where he lands.

Arve Henriksen Quartet
An exceptional Norwegian quartet, put together by trumpet player Arve Henriksen, renowned
for the unusual fluty sound of his instrument and Jan Bang, electronics performer and father of
“live remix”.
“I listened to lots of Don Cherry and Miles Davis, but Nils-Petter and Jon Hassell inspired me the
most. One day Nils introduced me to Japanese shakuhachy and it was then that I knew which
road I wanted to go down with my trumpet. I consider my music to be contemporary, sounds and
music for films.” Under the Norwegian spotlight for many years, Arve Henriksen has made the
original timbre of his trumpet and equally original use of voice his trademark. The latter, strongly
connected to nature, often tells of experiences that have had an impact on him.

all these people together so they can interact with

internet has made it possible and so the first ever

FRIDAY 11th OCTOBER

The musical counterpoint section is one of the new features
of the IF 2013 programme. During meetings, panels and
keynote speeches across the three subject areas of the
Festival, three original musical projects created specifically
for the Festival will be alternated, like real musical
counterpoints.
THE PROTAGONISTS:
LP HEROES
Silvia Bolognesi: double bass, voice, percussion
Daniele Paoletti: drums, voice electromechanics
This unusual duo have taken on a project of reinterpretation; a
reinterpretation of rock songs from the 1970s to the present day.
On this undoubtedly rich and patchy background, the two artists
play with their own ideas about sound and arrangement.
VIOLINOSOLO
Ruben Chaviano: violin, effects, loop station
SATURDAY 12th OCTOBER
From Jazz to Rock taking a detour via the melting pot of Latin.
An unusual musical experience. Accompanied by an amplified
violin and a multi-effect pedal keyboard. Reinterpreting melodies
- sometimes distorting them, sometimes adding unusual effects characterises the beauty and originality of this performance.

ELECTROFENDER
Simone Graziano: Fender Rhodes, electronics
Andrea Melani: drums
In this original duo, Fender Rhodes and multi-effect drums bring
a performance fusing jazz, electronic music and improvisation to
life, creating acoustic versions of electronic vibes.

After 400 years of analogue technology, information
publishing is changing its spots and going digital.
But it’s still the quality of the journalism that counts.
For four centuries information publishing has played a central role in
the development of modern civilisation, especially through the medium
of printed newspapers which the digital revolution is now sidelining.
How can this tumultuous change be handled to protect journalism?

10.00am/10.40am
We’re at the beginning of the most radical transformation of
our agriculture industry since the Green Revolution. Until now,
innovation in agriculture has been concentrated on seeds, inputs
and hardware. Now, as information and technology disrupt
virtually every industry, like healthcare, media and education, the
agriculture industry is beginning to use technology to improve
operations, communications and profitability. While incumbents
like John Deere have developed agribusiness solutions, there
has also been an explosion of tech start-ups; farmers and food
advocates who are creating solutions for small and medium-sized
farms. This talk will explore the ag tech start-up ecosystem and
how it’s creating value for farmers all over the world.

Rural Hub: moving towards rural-social innovation
11.00am/1.00pm
It might seem strange to take the word ‘rural’ as our starting point for
a journey into innovation. In a period of connected and confessional
culture, the consumer is becoming increasingly informed and aware,
and increasingly immersed in the “story” of food.
So it’s a meeting to explore rurality 2.0, its approaches,
experiences, virtual communities and the main development
paths for the future. An event in collaboration with Rural Hub.

The Green Economy
3.00pm/3.40pm
We are (however slowly) transitioning to a sustainable economy.
We only have so much planet and so much time. And this means
going beyond business as usual. And accounting for all the hidden
costs of the extractive economy in environmental and social
degradation. The exciting possibility (as with other big trends
like digital or globalisation) being innovation, developing new
business models. There are a number of these models which fit
well into existing businesses and help justify developing green
alternatives. But the really exciting new possibilities lie beyond
these, in collaborative, abundant and effortless models - working
with nature (and human nature) not against. And rather than
converging on one ‘COP15 style’ consensus we will more likely
see a patchwork of local solutions, with the emerging world
playing an increasing role in all of this.

Think of Memento or Inception or more concretely of Avatar. The

shape into our heads. Digital has broken us up into pieces. It all

The Politics of Twitter Data
10.00am/10.30am
This talk looks into how Twitter has been considered since it
was launched in 2006 as an ambient friend-following and
messaging utility, modelled after dispatch communications. As
Jack Dorsey, the Twitter co-founder, phrased it, Twitter also did
rather well during disasters and elections, and subsequently
became an event-following tool, at once shedding at least in
part its image as a what-I-had-for-lunch medium. Most recently,
Twitter has settled into a data set, one that is of value for Twitter,
Inc. and also is archived by the Library of Congress. Each of
these objects, described here as Twitter I, Twitter II, and Twitter
III, have elicited particular approaches to its study. The talk takes
each object in turn, describing the debates and scholarship
around them, and provides a framework to situate past, current
and future Twitter research.

Big Data is an enormous amount of content. Content is not only
information, but a constant workflow generating knowledge,
explaining current stories and identifying trends and the “sentiments”
of society out of the infinite number of bytes. For politics, Big Data
is an opportunity for “learning potential”, which, if interpreted well,
enables future scenarios and trends to be understood at a political
level. This model also applies to other areas.

Digital Dualism Vs. Augmented Reality
3.00pm/3.40pm
I will explore how we should understand the relationship between
digital connection and disconnection. For too long we have
understood the Web as “virtual”, as a separate “digital world’, as
some new “cyber’ space. This fiction I call “digital dualism” is no
longer useful and, instead, I propose a different interpretation
that views digitality and materiality as always enmeshed, coimplicated, and co-determining. I will apply this understanding
to current debates around digital connection and disconnection,
namely “unplugging”, “digital sabbaths”, “digital detoxes” and calls
to unplug, disconnect, and ban smartphones from more areas of
everyday life. Opposed to thinkers like Sherry Turkle, my critique of
digital dualism argues that there are no distinct on and offline, that
is, the so-called offline and disconnected is still deeply influenced
by the Web. Further, the Web, digitality, smartphones, Facebook and
the rest are always still deeply material and embodied. I conclude
that this current trend of promoting digital austerity is less about
demeaning the digital as merely “virtual” and more about claiming
that the disconnected is more “real” and human. We’ve created the
fiction of the online to simultaneously create the fiction of the “real”,
the “natural”, and the fully disconnected. This digital dualist ideal is
unachievable, conservative in its implications, and ultimately serves
to dehumanize those caught the highly augmented reality we live in.

The Web in white and black

Today, in the age of Web 2.0, we are attempting to question the
same dichotomy between integrated and apocalyptical positions
Umberto Eco discussed in 1964 about television. Two opposing

A debate between those who consider the net to be something
ridiculous and those who can only see its positives. By the end of

Smart cities, the cradles of future innovation
3.00pm/3.30pm
Digital technologies have transformed cities radically and will
continue to do so in the coming 20-30 years. The spread of big
data, cloud and future internet technologies will significantly
improve civic services by enabling every citizen to actively
participate to policy decisions, shape new ideas and engaging in
new social entrepreneurship experiences. They will make cities
more self-sustainable by reducing costs and improving the
efficiency of utilities, transport and healthcare infrastructures.
More radical innovations stemming from the widespread use of
3D printing and robotics systems will dramatically impact today’s
economic models by bringing most of today’s production and
consumption back to a local sustainable dimension. This will open
up unprecedented opportunities to European cities to flourish and
become primary actors in the global landscape. The challenge
for the policy makers will be to harness the opportunities of
this transformation and to create the conditions for a new era of
growth and prosperity.

One of the most debated topics about the internet is the influence it

Want Cloud?
3.30pm/4.30pm
CLOUDING HELPS SOFTWARE BUSINESSES TO UPLOAD AND
SELL THEIR APPLICATIONS ON THE CLOUD. IT TAKES JUST A
FEW MINUTES AND NO INVESTMENT IS NECESSARY.
Nowadays every software company is talking about the cloud;
uploading and selling software and/or services from the cloud
requires a lot of effort: specialist knowledge about cloud
services and software, re-engineering applications to make
them scalable, investments in sales and marketing. ClouDesire
is a solution enabling any software company, particularly small
businesses, to overcome the current barriers blocking access to
the cloud. It makes their web applications SaaS & Cloud ready
in just a few moments, making buying fast and simple for their
end clients.
Developers can therefore concentrate solely on what they do
best, whilst ClouDesire takes on all tasks relating to uploading
to the cloud and selling a service. (in collaboration with CNA)

The pioneers reinventing ‘made in Italy’
10.00am/10.30am
There are thousands of companies out there that are innovating,
combining the digital with savoir-faire. Though they do not know it,
they are artisans. They are start-up businesses; this they do know.
They carry out R&D though it's not part of the budget. If Italy is to
start again, it has to come from them; as the children of the internet,
they know how to handle information overload and use know-where.
They are competent and cosmopolitan, but they want to stay here,
trying to extract and transform our country's real raw materials culture and beauty - into an economy.
