November 11th – December 4th 2011 INCONTEMPORANEA PARMA FESTIVAL Teatro Festival Zona Franca Natura Dèi Teatri Associazione MICRO MACRO FESTIVAL TEATRO DELLE BRICIOLE ZONA FRANCA Parma, 12 – 27 November 2011 Teatro al Parco, Biblioteca Palatina, Liceo Artistico Paolo Toschi With the contribution of Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali Regione Emilia - Romagna Comune di Parma Provincia di Parma Fondazione Monte di Parma Performances for adults SONIA BERGAMASCO AND FABRIZO GIFUNI read THE LITTLE PRINCE by Antonie de Saint-Exupéry idea Fabrizio Gifuni and Sonia Bergamasco sound Rodolfo Rossi light design Cesare Accetta in collaboration with Teatro Franco Parenti >Teatro al Parco November 12th at 21.00 Two great artists will inaugurate Zona Franca Festival with this great masterpiece of children literature. “Here is my secret. It is very simple: it is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” This real treasure enlightens Saint Exupéry’s tale and allows us to understand the human soul; it’s inside this amazing secret that Sonia Bergamasco and Fabrizio Gifuni invite the spectator/reader to follow with them the Little Prince’s journey. A journey full of wonderful encounters and many mysteries in this initiation tale that is also an essay on education and philosophy. A metaphor for “maternal”, for belonging to and separating from, for the uniqueness of each relationship. TERRAMMARE TEATRO LEZIONE DI CLASSE (SCHOOL LESSON) idea Gigi Gherzi project and performance Gigi Gherzi, Silvia Civilla > Liceo Artistico Statale “P. Toschi” November 17th and 18th at 21.00 Gigi Gherzi’s theatre goes toward the spectators, it stimulates them, pushes them to express spoken and written words and then gratifies them for their thoughts and feelings. To speak about school, far away from “petty political battles” but closer to some of the great themes such as learning, training, and teaching, Gigi Gherzi presents his show at the Toschi High School of Parma and has his public sit once more on the school benches. This to ask, amidst paintings, great writers thoughts, and the ideas from the public, questions such as: what does teaching mean? How does one learn? What type of intelligence are we trained for? Special Puppet Theatre TOF THEATRE – TEATRO DELLE BRICIOLE (Belgium-Italie) PICCOLI SENTIMENTI idea, puppet and direction Alain Moreau artistic collaboration Antonio Catalano sound and music Max Vandervorst with Sandrine Hooge, Céline Robaszynski, Alain Moreau (alternatively) co-production Festival A pas contés (Dijon), Le Granit – Scène Nationale de Belfort, Scène Nationale de Montbéliard, L’Yonne en scène National Première > Teatro al Parco November 25th at 21.00 - November 26th at 22.30 Tof Theatre and Teatro delle Briciole have been collaborating together for years. The Italian public remembers very well the shows: Bistouris, Bénévoles, Sur la Dune. This long relationship has given birth to a co-production project that puts together Alain Moreau’s puppet theatre, Antonio Catalano’s crafty-art and his fantastic “every day objects”, and Max Vandervorst’s “patamusic” composed and played with those in current use objects transformed into instruments. The wonder of a little character who discovers the world becomes one intimately shared feeling with the spectators. -----------------------------------------------------Zona Franca Festival pays a special tribute to Roberto Abbiati. A kind of a small monographic portrait with two of his works: his genial “reduction” of the novel Moby Dick by Melville and his last show on the art of typography. GORGONZOLA DREAM UNA TAZZA DI MARE IN TEMPESTA (A STORMY CUP OF SEA) director Roberto Abbiati with Roberto Abbiati, Luca Salata, Alessandro Calabrese > Teatro al Parco November 25 th at 20.30, at 22.00, and at 23.00 Limited sitting Melville’s masterpiece, the great story of Captain Ahab and his adventurous whale hunting doesn’t feel a bit claustrophobic when closed in a small four by two meters room. It’s in this tiny space, reminding maybe a whaling-ship’s hold that Roberto Abbiati evokes with his strange suggestions and his small objects huge things such as: whales, sailboats, oceans. A miniaturization that involves not only space but also time and public: a few spectators are invited for a few minutes to share “a stormy cup of sea”. FONDAZIONE I TEATRI REGGIO EMILIA LO STAMPATORE ZOLLINGER (THE PRINTER ZOLLINGER) inspired by Pablo d’Ors’ novel director Roberto Abbiati with Roberto Abbiati, Marino Zerbin, Matteo Rubagotti > Teatro al Parco November 26th at 21.00 The printer Zollinger is an «apprenticeship story» and also a homage to the art of typography and therefore the invention of free characters, which in the hands of Roberto Abbiati becomes the art of correction, that is the art that makes you think of another possibility, that is the possibility that will change to your life. Abbiati re-prints for the stage “The adventures of printer Zollinger” by Pablo d’Ors, a gentle and humourous story which tells the misadventures of a young man who dreams to become a printer. The passion of the Lombard director-actor for mechanics and for assembling objects finds in the young August Zollinger’s story the precious occasion to have words and matter, poetry and stage-art get into a dialog. ------------------------------------------------------ LE DUE E UN QUARTO SENZA DENTI (TOOTHLESS) direction Adrian Schvarzstein with Martina Soragna and Silvia Laniado set design Bruno Geda e Marco Premoli puppets Martina Soragna > Teatro al Parco November 25 at 22.00 In 2009, the audience attending the ‘Puppet Theatre marathon’ at Teatro al Parco was struck with a performance that finely played on the relation between animate and inanimate hidden behind the puppeteer shack. In their performances, the young actresses Silvia Laniado e Martina Soragna make the puppet movements and body hit the actor movements and body, with a weird, surreal and metatheatrical humour. A humour coming from the “comedy”, that gives a peculiar verve to the popular art of the puppets: that’s what happens in Senza denti (Toothless), a mocking performance in which two precocious and odd newborn babies show the childhood from their point of view, with innocence and cruelty. TEATRO IN TRAMBUSTO VARIETÀ PRESTIGE (VARIETY-SHOW PRESTIGE) idea and direction Francesca Zoccarato puppet creation Jan Ruzicka > Teatro al Parco November 26th at 23.30 Musicians, singers, dancers, cabaret singers, monkeys puppet theatre and variety-show are getting together. The charm of vintage sequins, shiny dresses and gramophones are coming back to life thanks to a puppeteer with high-eels and sequins who wants to pay a very feminine and glamorous homage to the twenties, to the avanspettacolo, its myths and rituals. The legendary music of Edith Piaf and Boris Vian, of Cole Porter and Trio Lescano comes back to life in the middle of piano-toys and amazing puppets sculpted by the Czech artist Jan Ruzick. Ladies and Gentlemen, today’s dream is a variety show: another period, another music! Performances for young public TEATRO DELLE BRICIOLE L’ORCO SCONFITTO OVVERO IL SAPERE DEL PIÙ PICCOLO (THE DEFEATED OGRE or how the little ones know) inspired by Little Thumb Letizia Quintavalla and Valentin Rossier director Letizia Quintavalla with Teodoro Bonci Del Bene show created at Am Stram Gram le Théatre – Geneve – 2001 4 to 6 > Teatro al Parco November 13th at 15.30 and at 17.30 November 24th at 9.30 Freely inspired by Charles Perrault’s Little Thumb, L’Orco sconfitto – The defeated Ogre – brings this strong initiation ritual to the theatre in a form of “kidnapping”. Three children are chosen within the public to go through the intuitive and courageous steps that the three brothers will need to take. A journey together with the actor to grow up, a symbolic route alongside the various faces of masculinity: fatherly, protective, dangerous, and childish. Teodoro Bonci Del Bene is the only Italian actor who graduated from the Moscow Art Theatre created by Stanislavskij and who has already participated in five of its productions. TOF THEATRE – TEATRO DELLE BRICIOLE (Belgium-Italie) PICCOLI SENTIMENTI idea, puppet and direction Alain Moreau artistic collaboration Antonio Catalano sound and music Max Vandervorst with Sandrine Hooge, Céline Robaszynski, Alain Moreau (alternatively) co-production Festival A pas contés (Dijon), Le Granit – Scène Nationale de Belfort, Scène Nationale de Montbéliard, L’Yonne en scène 3 and up National Première > Teatro al Parco, November 19th and 20th, at 15.30 and at 17.30 November 18th, 21st, 22nd, 24th 25th at 10.00 November 26th at 16.30 November 27th at 15.30 Piccoli sentimenti comes from a wish to explore the wonder of a small being who discovers the world. In a landscape of stones, small pieces of wood, of water and soil, where each sense immediately opens up to art, beauty and music, the miniature world of Tof Theatre, the crafty art of Antonio Catalano and the “patamusica” of Max Vandervorst create a loving and quite humoristic re-evaluation of “piccoli sentimenti – small feelings”. Happiness, fear, solitude, sadness, desire, are shared together by the spectators who are very close to the stage, and by quite a mysterious puppet: man, animal, child, adult? JOSE’ ANTONIO PORTILLO (Spain) BIBLIOTECA DE CUERDA Y NUDOS (LIBRARY OF CORDS AND KNOTS) idea and setting José Antonio Portillo with José Antonio Portillo 6 and up National Première > Palatina Library, November 18th, 10.00 and 11.00 November 21st, 22nd, 23rd at 10.00 and at 14.30 November 24th at 14.30 and at 16.30 From outside, Portillo’s Library is an imposing cylinder made out of very smooth wood. But inside, the curious visitor who desires to participate will actually discover its most amazing nature. The spectators are asked to come in a circular architecture so they can enrich it with lifefragments; such an amazing piece of work will leave a powerful visual imprint in every theatre that will welcome it. Inside, amongst cords and knots, instruments of an archeo-language still to be discovered, there are two other “impossible” collections a library for all the manuscripts that have never been published and one for all the projects that have been trashed. KILODRAMMI TEATRO SOMARI (DUNCES) finalist at Premio Scenario Infanzia 2010 text and direction Francesca Cavallo with Renato Avallone, Elisa Bottiglieri, Marco Ripoldi 14 and up > Teatro al Parco November 19th at 11.00 There are some things that you’re the only one to understand when you’re sixteen, you’re convinced of it, and you also know you understand them much better than anyone else. Your suffering is very much different from anyone else and your anger is about things no one else beside you can even get a grasp of. Somari – Dunces is the story of three types of heroic loneliness: Erri, Nerone and Lucia. There are very different from each other and they have to live through a tremendous experience that starts as a game: hold their school hostage. During that whole experience the three teenagers fiercely confront each other telling us this way about the many difficulties of school, the great need to create relationships and the strength one needs to have to grow up in a country that keeps saying there is no real future. TEATRO KISMET LA PRINCIPESSA SUL PISELLO (THE PRINCESS AND THE PEA) Inspired by The Princess and the Pea text and direction Lucia Zotti with Monica Contini, Delanira Dragone, Nico Masciullo props and masks Lisa Serio original music Nico Masciullo 7 and up National première > Teatro al Parco November 22nd at 10.00 It’s all about discovering one’s self and one’s own destiny, about overcoming difficulties through the intuition and intelligence of a prince of rock and roll and a “fake” princess. La principessa sul pisello – The Princess and the pea – is a fairy tale that intertwines old and modern, thrones and queens with trips in auto-stop and metropolitan adventures, and it tells us that if you step out of the family-nest you’ll discover the world and that if you overcome difficulties you’ll grow up; it also tells us that strength and fragility, courage and shyness can coexist. Princes and Princesses, tar carpets, singing competitions with presenters and fans in a contemporary fairy tale that explores the values and paths of what is “masculine” and what is “feminine”. THEATRE NOUVELLE GENERATION – CENTRE DRAMATIQUE DE LYON (France) TERRES! by Lise Martin director Nino D’Introna with Maxime Cella, Thomas di Genova, Alexis Jebeile, Sarah Marcuse in French with Italian surtitles 10 and up National Première > Teatro al Parco November 22nd and 23rd at 11.00 At the end of a long journey, Aride and Kétal settle in some piece of land that says “private property”. They are quickly disturbed by a third man who claims that this land belongs to him. Nino D’Introna decides to bring on stage Lise Martin’s contemporary play asking, with this new production from Theatre Nouvelle Generation, questions about the origins of violence that develops within groups. In a scenery that the French critique considered “worthy of a Kadinskij’s painting”, this search for the ideal land that has been going on since the dawn of time, keeps creating important power struggles and many conflicts, and brings back the constant dilemma to find a solution. TEATRO DELLE BRICIOLE CAPPUCCETTO ROSSO (LITTLE RED RIDDING HOOD) by Charles Perrault text and direction Manuela Capece and Davide Doro with Claudio Guain and Rosita d’Aiello 3 and up National Première > Teatro al Parco November 23rd at 10.00 Cappucetto Rosso - Little Red Ridding Hood - in Charles Perrault’s oldest version, tells us about some marvellous forest where a beautiful little girl gets lost and where she meets the worst of the Big bad wolves. The wolf devours the grand-mother and then devours also the little girl. Perrault’s fable ends like that without any solution nor any redemption, but with a moral. Italo Calvino said that Little Red Ridding Hood was not a fairy tale but instead a narrating game to “scare” small children so they can deal with their own fear. It’s precisely with this in mind that we need to tell you this story. (Davide Doro and Manuela Capece) PRINCIPIO ATTIVO TEATRO LA BICICLETTA ROSSA (THE RED BICYCLE) direction Giuseppe Semararo playwright Valentina Diana with Giuseppe Semeraro, Silvia Lodi, Otto Marco Mercante, Dario Cadei, Cristina Mileti 8 and up Preview > Teatro al Parco November 23rd at 14.30 With the characteristics of a silent film and with some clownish traits, La Bicicletta Rossa – The Red Bicycle – going through many different emotional states, such as laughing, or thinking, or being simply plain emotional, tells the parabola of a family held in check by a made-up character called Bankomat. Marta is the one who sees and tells everything. And Marta is a little girl who is still in her mother’s tummy. This is a neo-realist tale about some pacifist and victorious revolt with all the ingredients of a classical fable. A modern tale which explores the irruption of the economy, its mechanisms and its overwhelming implications in the small universe of a family today. GORGONZOLA DREAM UNA TAZZA DI MARE IN TEMPESTA (A STORMY CUP OF SEA) director Roberto Abbiati with Roberto Abbiati, Luca Salata, Alessandro Calabrese 8 and up > Teatro al Parco November 25th at 14.30 Limited sitting Melville’s masterpiece, the great story of Captain Ahab and his adventurous whale hunting doesn’t feel a bit claustrophobic when closed in a small four by two meters room. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TEATRO DELLE BRICIOLE Construction site: New Visions for Young Audience In 2010, Teatro delle Briciole inaugurated the “construction site” New Visions for Young Audience. Therefore with the conviction that we need to be confronted with some theatrical experiences quite different from what is usually called children-theatre, Teatro delle Briciole asked some young groups involved in Italian research to create new shows for children. The first show of this project was Baby don’t cry from Babilonia Teatri. And in 2011 Teatro Sotterraneo followed the path with La Repubblica dei bambini – The Children Republic. Zona Franca Festival is happy to present today and for the first time together the two shows that came out of this Construction site. LA REPUBBLICA DEI BAMBINI (THE CHILDREN REPUBLIC) project entrusted to Teatro Sotterraneo director Sara Bonaventura, Jacopo Braca, Claudio Cirri, Daniele Villa with Daniele Bonaiuti, Chiara Renzi in collaboration with Teatro Metastasio Stabile della Toscana 7 and up > Teatro al Parco November 24th at 11.00 The children in this show are asked to create a completely new state on their own. The stage is then the space to make it happen, the place where reality and fiction will have to rise together. Laws, money, institutions, diplomacy, business: What would happen if children, who are not by definition active citizens, were to create a micro-nation? “ It’s about a small Public Thing, it’s about a play where fiction is quite obvious since it is the motor of our imagination; it’s about a mini-country that will disappear as soon as the stage-lights will go off; but at the same time it’s also about some eventuality”. (Teatro Sotterraneo) BABY DON’T CRY project entrusted to Babilonia Teatri text and direction Valeria Raimondi, Enrico Catellanio with Marco Olivieri, Francesco Speri 7 and up > Teatro al Parco November 25th at 11.00 What’s going on when you cry? That’s what Babilonia Teatri asked the children in the schools of Parma before creating a non-conventional show that describes the dreams and pains of today’s childhood. Nursery rhymes in rap, pop-rock music, body-theatre to talk about desires, fashions, conflicts, excess consuming, but also about the unexpected “craving to be listened to and the great need for attention and warmth”. “Crying is ordinary but also extraordinary. Crying is an every day thing but it’s also exceptional, it’s both normal and amazing. We have discovered that crying isn’t at all taboo for children. Actually, they easily speak about it, and they know how much they need to cry and how important it is to cry.” (Babilonia Teatri). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Installation in the foyer du Teatro al Parco SCARLATTINETEATRO MICROMIGNON idea Anna Fascendini still in process thanks to the generosity of Campsirago Residenza Monte di Brianza > Teatro al Parco November 22nd to 27 th An owl nest. But also a “biciosca” and a “lumalena”. Strange words for strange objects that show up in the foyer of Teatro al Parco and that the actors will help “perform” here and there. “Micromachines” half way between theatre and visual art are welcoming the spectators the same way an old amusement park would. Micromignon comes from the desire to be transported by the magic of an object, of a sound, of a story. What will be presented at Zona Franca Festival is only a part of this project which is in constant evolution. Other objects will follow “to keep finding the theatre even outside of its usual space and time”.
