Dopo aver pubblicato negli anni passati qualche lavoro molto apprezzato
ma perlopiù scambiato a mano tra i fan, gli Stars Like Fleas sono
riemersi nel 2006 con una nuova veste, frutto di un intervento di
chirurgia plastica sonora e del desiderio di diffondere le proprie gemme
underground.
Veri agitatori della scena musicale di Brooklyn, i Fleas hanno cominciato
a tenere concerti sempre più importanti in location segrete così come in
club del calibro del Bowery Ballrooom e del North Six di New York,
esibendosi insieme a band quali, Deerhoof, Grizzly Bear, Excepeter,
Gang Gang Dance, Comets On Fire, Man Man, Beirut, Kyp Malone dei Tv
on the Radio e Akron/Family.
Gli Stars Like Fleas rappresentano un nuovo ramo dell'albero
genealogico della musica americana, distinguendosi grazie ad un'inedita
alchimia in cui ansia e contrasti convivono con candore, gioia e
romanticismo. Nelle loro già mitiche esibizioni trasformiste (acclamate,
tra gli altri, da Wire Magazine, Time Out, Village Voice, oltre ovviamente
a innumerevoli blog), gli Stars Like Fleas creano una musica unica,
accessibile, umana e allo stesso tempo estrema e sconvolgente.
Julianne Shepherd di Pitchfork e Spin ha recentemente affermato a
proposito dei Fleas: “Il loro agio e la loro intimità sul palco fa sentire
come se si fosse invitati ad un pranzo in famiglia...forse la band migliore
che abbia visto a New York.” Ed Droste dei Grizzly Bear le fa eco in
un'intervista su Dusted Magazine, definendo il gruppo “absolutely mind
blowing” mentre salon.com così si esprime: “Pochi gruppi hanno la
capacità di spingere la propria musica verso la totale mancanza di
forma, e poi l'abilità e la concentrazione per riportare questo magma a
qualcosa di ascoltabile, coerente e bellissimo...ottimi.”
Questo Ken Burns Effect, vero e proprio documento sulla crescita della
band nel corso dell'ultimo anno, è un album iconoclasta e allo stesso
tempo più immediato, organico e sontuoso del suo predecessore (Sun
Lights Down on the Fence) che già aveva raccolto consensi unanimi
(Pitchfork gli aveva assegnato un 8.2 e l'aveva definito “intimate and
utterly beautiful”).

E' stato un fan dei Fleas, il compositore Nico Muhly (arrangiatore per Björk, Grizzly Bear e Antony & The
Jonsons) a passare tutte le bozze di registrazione al produttore e collaboratore di Björk Valgeir Sigurðsson, il
quale ha poi invitato la band in Islanda per completare il lavoro e il mix nell'autunno del 2006.
Il disco è stato quindi mixato da Ben Frost (Björk, Gomez) e masterizzato da Valgeir Sigurðsson (Björk, Múm,
Sigur Rós) presso gli studi Greenhouse di Reyjkavik (dove sono stati completati anche The Letting Go di
Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy e The Adventures Of Ghosthorse and Stillborn delle Cocorosie) e vede la partecipazione di
Beirut, Tall Firs, TV On The Radio, Celebration, Fiery Furnaces, Mercury Rev, The Silent League oltre a
contributi di Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Sean Lennon, Fantomas) e Thomas Bartlett (Yoko Ono, The National,
Doveman, David Byrne, Antony & The Johnsons).
