LA FIGLIA DEL CAPITANO .
SYNOPSIS
________________________________________________________
It is the year 1776, in a matter of a few months the uprisings by hand of
Cossacks and peasants that have swept over the Russia of Catherine the Great have
been quenched by blood.
A young Hussar officer named Pjotr Grinev is waiting to be tried by the Court
Martial: he has been accused of betraying the Tsarina and having sided with Emil
Pugacev, the legendary Cossack leader who led the revolt.
Similarly to a legal-thriller, the life of Pjotr has been turned inside out during a
trial that will decide whether he will live or die…
Pjotr is a spoiled nobleman who spent a sugar-coated childhood on his
father’s estate. His future could be like that of many other descendants of Russian
aristocracy: serving as Imperial Guard in Petersburg, marrying a girl of his same
social standing… But Pjotr has a rebellious and immature nature so his father
decides that, to make a man out of him, Pjotr has to serve in a frontier outpost:
Belorgoskaja, which is an isolated fort standing on the steppe amidst the hostile
and savage nomadic tribes. Count Grinev could never have imagined how much
this decision would have devastated his son’s life forever.
In fact, down there the young man meets the two people who would have
marked his extraordinary destiny. One of them is Masa, the beautiful daughter of a
captain stationed in Belogorskaja. Nothing is in favour of the violent passion that
sweeps over the two of them: Masa does not belong to the aristocracy, she does
not possess a dowry, she has an independent and adventure-loving personality that
leads her to take sides with those “savages” that her father’s Russian garrison
should be subjecting to the authority of the Tsar. And in any case she has a suitor,
a young man who is quick with his sword and ruthless, someone who would do
anything to have her: his name is Lieutenant Svabrin.
5
When he falls in love with her Pjotr begins a sort of journey that (by
shattering the social, political and sentimental conventions of Russia of the time)
lead him in front of the Court Martial but also lead him to becoming a man.
In order to win the girl over, Pjotr faces Svabrin in a nearly fatal duel, he
challenges the commander of the fort and he especially goes against his father’s
authority who is firmly against that relationship.
As Pjotr conducts his own private sentimental battle, another man is
attempting the impossible: raising the oppressed who live in the vast eastern
territories against the greedy and mean Russian aristocracy. His name is Emil
Pugacev, a passionate and charismatic Cossack who comes out of nowhere, who
successfully gathers the Cossacks, peasants and nomadic tribes under his
command. He leads them in an uprising that overturns the Russian garrisons and
leads them close to the city of Moscow in a matter of a few weeks.
This is where the encounter between Pjotr and Pugacev takes place, an
encounter that has somewhat of a fairy-like setting: a snowstorm, a frost-bitten
giant Cossack, a tavern in the middle of nowhere with an uprising brewing within…
Little does Pjotr know that the man whose life he has saved will one day become
the Tsarina’s number one enemy. And he cannot even imagine that this man who
is a bandit and a rebel will be the one to save his life in turn and to free Masa from
Svabrin who is about to marry her against her will.
But this strange relationship between the aristocrat and the bandit is the
reason behind the accusation of treason that hovers above Pjotr’s head.
Whereas other Russian officers are sent to the gallows should they not
succumb to the rebels, Pjotr has been pardoned and has been seen taking part in
feasts in the company of Pugacev in person. And that’s not all: he has been
offered a pass and a convoy to help him set Masa free…
But the truth is too complicated to convince a military court. Pjotr has never
committed treason, he has never promised Pugacev that he will be on his side. So
why has the rebel leader done so much for him? Pjotr himself doesn’t know the
exact reason. The simplest explanation is that he wants to prove his gratitude after
Pjotr saved his life. But that’s not enough. Nor is the Cossack’s capricious and
6
unpredictable personality that often leads him to act for the pure pleasure of
taking people by surprise.
Something stronger ties Pugacev to that young
aristocratic with an impulsive and loyal personality. Perhaps it is some sort of
paternal instinct.
Or insisting upon wanting to win over an enemy who
demonstrates a consciousness that is different from the narrow-mindedness of the
other members of his social class. Pugacev knows that the revolution is doomed to
failure and he intends to sow the seed of a fair society into the heart of that young
idealist, to convince him that the time has come for Russia to change. Pjotr
represents a personal challenge for the rebel leader; he wants to win this challenge
in terms of feelings and friendship, as if to escape the horrors and violence that he
has unleashed.
Then Masa unexpectedly takes action in saving Pjotr from a sure-fire
sentence; following a journey full of risks, Masa reaches Petersburg and personally
makes her appeal to Catherine the Great. The Tsarina is impressed by Masa’s
daring and passion, but this is not enough to make her change her mind. So once
again Pugacev is the one who saves Pjotr’s life. In fact Catherine, spurred by the
young woman’s story, goes down into the dungeons where the rebel leader is
waiting to be executed.
A dramatic clash takes place between the two
irreconcilable enemies who, for the first time, come face to face with each other.
Pugacev shows no remorse or humility – on the contrary. But he convinces the
Tsarina that Masa is right about Pjotr: he is not a traitor and his death sentence
must be repealed.
Before returning to the family home with Masa, freed from all charges, Pjotr
wants to pay Pugacev back. The rebel leader will not be executed as planned, nor
will he be tortured on the Kazan square. Pjotr himself is the one to give him a quick
and dignified death, with one gunshot fired from a rooftop.
La Figlia del Capitano (The Captain’s Daughter) has all the ingredients needed
for a fantastic tale, a formation novel, even recalling westerns… A young hero
dispatched by his father around the world, in search of fortune, a series of trials to
be overcome, a young woman to win over and an unexpected happy ending.
7
The story has late-18th century Russia in the background, a web of intrigues
at court, savage tribes living in the endless steppes and a Tsarina of refined
intelligence who has become cruel thanks to the loneliness intrinsic to power.
Through the events in the life of Pjotr Grinev, Puskin has skilfully conveyed the
spirit, the melancholic, vital and endless soul of the Great Mother Russia. Yet this
story written two centuries ago surprises us with conflicts and passions that still
influence the destiny of modern-day Russia: atrocious social inequality, boundless
spaces and ethnic differences that the central government rules with great
difficulty.
But at least on the level of story invention, Puskin seems to tell us that not all
is established. Pjotr, Masa and their love represent a break from the curse of
history that repeats itself, and the hope that a different path does truly exist.
