Flavio Tossi 3 The friend's wink Personaggi in cerca di autore, 2015 · vetro soffiato cm 30x10 (misura media) / Characteres in search of an autor, 2015 · blown glass · 30x10 cm (medium size) To synthetically describe the figure François Piers and his relationship with art is a hard task as one risks shifting into connotations that might leave room for misunderstandings. With reference to architecture one might think about composite, the Roman architectonic order which matches the Ionic volutes to the Corinthian acanthus in the capital. But maybe the parallel is excessive. More soberly referring to art in general, and also on the human plane, eclectic would be preferable, but spiteful people might interpret the term in its reductive meaning, that is to say as dispersive. With reference to literature, the malicious abrupt person would certainly opt for Dr. Jekill and Mr. Hyde. Surely the figure is complex, polyhedral, and his curriculum is the proof: multi graduate, ex-manager of a commercial business, vice president of an insurance group and at the same time very active honorary consul of Tunisia and judge of a Commercial Court. Always pervaded by the love for art, between one stage and the other of his professional career, he also manages to follow courses in the Academy of Fine Arts. Anything but young he gets by in various groups of amateur artists, out of pure personal pleasure, to exchange experiences, with no claims to artistic recognition. And here, in the evident ambivalence the contrast emerges. All this complexity of life, somehow almost farraginous, melts into his watercolours to disappear turning into charming and spontaneous simplicity expressed with quick brush strokes which communicate joyful peacefulness. Is the malicious abrupt person who involves Dr. Jekill and Mr. Hyde right? Or, simply, the brush is the unconscious antidote, the homeopathic remedy to an intense professional life, which metabolizes a certain way of being in society? An old friend, to tell the truth sometimes evanescent, glimpses in his works the François depurated, appreciates his expression, perceives his talent, encourages him. With the complicity of two other friends experienced in the world of art he sets him a trap. At first he mocks at himself and then incredulous and hesitant he lets himself be tempted and in the end, timorous but with growing confidence, he throws himself into the adventure and presents his first personal show in Trieste, a seaport like his Ostend. Marianna Accerboni 5 The light of the North Passeggiata sulla spiaggia, 2014 · acquerello, tintura di mallo di noce · cm 27x36 Walk on the beach, 2014 · watercolour, walnut stain · 27x36 cm 6 It is an intimate Europe unknown to us living in the country wo die Zitronen blűhen (where lemons blossom) to quote Goethe; a Europe of the North, where the beaches of the thinnest sand are delicately gilded by a clear and sometimes cold-hued light; or Tunisia, with its vast horizons and the squares and the oases swarming with people wrapped in long kaftans, then turned into bright and transparent jugs of glass by the skilled artist; or more, nature and the birds, which skim in formation over the water, and the other tame and wild animals that people reality, the imaginary and fables, such as lions, little donkeys, meek dogs with smooth and long hair; and sometimes a very green landscape, captured in its silence, and the family, the children running and playing in the wind, on the gilded beaches of the North. A biography through images with a universal flavour: that is how one could describe the painting by Francois Piers, a contemporary Flemish artist, with a gentle and sunny character, who condenses a life and a pragmatic activity such as that of judge and consul with the long-range flowing of painting and creativity which lead him towards free and infinite spaces of light. The light represents to the author, endowed with an instinctive and natural talent for narration, the first key to the reading of the world; the light that in the North at night lingers until late and which Piers is able to capture instinctively with an incredibly quick and immediate flick, a salient gift of a person trained in the art of watercolour, the most hazardous pictorial technique, as it does not allow afterthoughts. The light almost magically springs from the juxtaposition of colours often light and almost impalpable, such as the sands of the North Sea, or flaming and intense like the silk and the hand dyed fabrics in the East and Africa. A light that often emerges almost by subtraction, a concept that after all is like silence, sometimes full of meanings. And a light which is a gift and a richness of the artists of all time, starting from the luminist refinement of Giovanni Bellini, one of the greatest protagonists of the Italian Renaissance, and the crystalline transparencies of Vermeer, to arrive at the luminist virtuosity of the Venetian School, the open-air paintings of the impressionists, the language of the avant-guards of the early 20th century, from Picasso to Braque, and the Orphism of Robert Delaunay, who, from the fragmentation of the forms and volumes, lets the value of the light and colour pour out, and ultimately the technological contemporary light. As almost all the great painting has been a synonym of light. Therefore, through a positive and apparently calm language, anyhow heralding tranquillity, the artist presents us a natural and human world, caught with vivacity and skill, a serene counterpoint and a subtly lyric interpretation of the reality behind which, with simplicity, harbours and flows the long history of Flemish art, in its most contemporary and romantically idealist ramification, such as, for example, the one followed by the great painter and illustrator from Brussels Jean-Michel Folon, who once confessed that he painted using luminous and vivid colours to compensate certain grey, rainy afternoons of his daily life in Belgium. François Piers Luce e gioia di vivere Marianna Accerboni François Piers is an intuitive and quick artist who finds his ideal medium in the watercolour by which he gives the viewer a tasteful and bright interpretation of the real: with just a few strokes of a vivid chromatic range often at the limits of fauve sensitivity, the Belgian painter interprets human reality and nature in line with the parameters of a figurative expressionism on the one hand tinged with a light neo-romantic sigh and on the other a joyful and luminous sense of the flow of life. He pins these situations and attitudes down on the paper in a witty and amiable way distant from the pervasive anguish of Nordic expressionism in favour of a light and a propensity closer to the expressionism of Mediterranean, French and Italian origin. François Piers was born in Ostend (Belgium, Flanders) in 1950, the son of a chemist in the old centre of the city, near the fishermen's quarter. He gets a degree in law, economic and financial law as well an MBA, and, as an artist, he trains in the Academy of Fine Arts in Ostend where he attends the courses of drawing, sculpture and painting. Active in the family business of distribution of pharmaceutical products until it was sold to a German group, he then becomes a judge of the Commercial Court of the same city and Vice President of the Belgian Insurance and mobility group Touring. He has been honorary consul of Tunisia in Western Flanders for 25 years. Pursuing his painterly training he joins the group of the Jeudart (from jeudi d'art, Thursday of art), where he learns the watercolour technique. With the members of this group he travels a lot in order to draw inspiration for his works. He goes to Tuscany, Côte d'Azur, the Somme Bay (in the north of France), on the barges in Paris, Muggia (Trieste), and paints en plein air, following the habit started in France in the second half of the 19th century by the Impressionists, who wanted to capture natural light and infuse their paintings with it. On his wanderings together with his artist colleagues, he meets an old friend living in Holland in Retranchement, a small village close to the Belgian border, and founder of an artist group. There François discovers new techniques and themes. The members of the group use to meet in a junk dealer's shed and, as in Dutch the junk objects are called brol, they soon adopt the name Brolistes. Every now and then they also go to paint at the Pierses’ in the hinterland of the Belgian coastal village De Haan-Le Coq: also other local artists are invited to join the group and so the group of the Coqart is founded. For his later work he draws growing inspiration from his frequent journeys to Tunisia. M.
