L’opera più significativa della sezione dedicata
alle antichità classiche è l’altare di Zeus (180-160
A.C.), un’ara così ampia che per essere esposta
completamente deve disporre di un’intera
stanza solo per essa. La ricomposizione delle
migliaia di frammenti del fregio scoperti
nell’attuale Bergama (Turchia) è durata oltre
20 anni. In pochi passi si giunge dal piano del
museo fino al colonnato: l’affascinante fregio
che circonda la base rappresenta la battaglia
degli dei dell’Olimpo contro i Titani ed è
sorprendentemente realistico, con figure che si
staccano più di 30 cm dallo sfondo dell’opera.

The highlight of the Classical Antiquities
section is the Zeus Altar (180-160 BC), which
is so large that it has a huge room all to itself.
The frieze took over 20 years to reassemble
from thousands of fragments uncovered in
modern-day Bergama, Turkey. Steps lead from
the museum floor up to the colonnade. Most
fascinating is the frieze around the base, which
depicts the struggle of the Olympian gods
against the Titans. It is strikingly life-like, with
figures that project as much as a foot from the
background.
