A European study carried out recently by TNS for the European Commission in 27 countries, Eurobarometer*, relates where we stand in terms of awareness regarding environmental problems: we have an advanced understanding of the critical issues, and the various environmental problems, but we are far from the results that could be achieved with greater effort from everyone... Environmental issues J^O^ health impact of chemicals in everyday products we are worried about % EU data 25% agricultural pollution L a buona notizia è che i consumatori europei sono sensibili alle problematiche ambientali. » 40 T he good news is that the European consumer is careful and seized about the issue. Ecological consciousness is on the rise and has its influence on consumer behavior, but we are far from the results that we could obtain with greater participation and effort from all. A recent European study of 27 countries executed by TNS for the European Commission, Eurobarometer*, states where we are in terms of awareness to environmental problems. Results show that Europe is aware of the various environmental problems and we believe that, industrially, there is a role to play as protector of the environment. There is a high level of awareness regarding critical conditions, starting from pollution (36%) waste of natural resources. (33%), to climate change ( 3 4 % ) . » Pubblicità Italia 03 | aprile 2014 • TNS - DATA CENTRE TNS Tali problematiche sono r i l e v a n t i anche a livello personale (95% degli i n t e r v i s t a t i dichiara che "proteggere l'ambiente per me è i m p o r t a n t e " ) , nonostante più d i u n terzo sia convinto che si t r a t t i d i preoccupazioni esagerate (37%). It is interesting to notice that the ones most confident, those who often buy eco-friendly products, are also the ones most convinced about their value ( 6 8 % believes that eco-friendly products have a good value-for-money). Ma chi acquista oggi p r o d o t t i eco-sostenibili? 4 europei su 5 lo fanno già, ma p u r t r o p p o solo uno su 4 lo fa spesso. Unica eccezione, l'acquisto d i p r o d o t t i ecoproduct buyers. I l prezzo sembra dunque avere, insieme alla convinzione Azioni II livello di fiducia nei claim a proposito degli effetti sull'ambiente dei prodotti eco-friendly nella nostra vita quotidiana / The level of trust in claims regarding environmental effects of eco-friendly products Azioni concrete nella nostra vita quotidiana / Concrete actions in our daily lives 0« Spain Germany Italv UK Sweden U s e d car less Who are the most concerned about environmental problems in Europe? The Spanish seem to be more "green" and active, although the Czechs are just behind. As far as us Italians, we use cars less (but only 4 0 % states this, compared to 53% of the Spanish, 4 1 % of Germans), we choose Italian products (62% vs Spanish 76% and Germans 74%) and we mention that we reduce consumption of energy ( 8 0 % of the interviewed vs 8 8 % of the Spanish and 8 1 % of the English). The purchase of eco-friendly products sees only one exception, that is in Sweden, where the percentage is higher than all the European countries (71%) Chose l o c a l l y produced products 53 41 40 33 31 B o u g h t EFPs Spain I Germany Italv Sweden UK ...^1 m 76 74 62 61 59 Cut energy consumption A Trust completely Tend to trust I .v Do not frustatali - Don't know Base all respondents: 25568 - Inner pie: FL256 April 2009 / Outer pie: FL367 Dec. 2012 e alla valorizzazione della selling proposition basata su argomentazioni ambientali, u n ruolo molto importante, crescente i n m o m e n t i di elevata sensibilità come quelli attuali. • *l dati riportati fanno riferimento a Flash Eurobarometer 367 "Attitudes of Europeans toward building the single market for green products". / 'Data shown refers to a Flash Eurobarometer 367 "Attitudes of Europeans toward building the single market for green products'. The study was carried out by TNS Political & Social upon request of the European Commission, across 27 nations, in December 2012. A representative sample (25.568 individuals) of the population aged 15 and above in the countries was questioned. Pubblicità Italia 03 | aprile 2014 Furthermore, we believe that purchasing eco-friendly products can make a difference, but we can also do more - only one out of 4 "buys often". For many, the price acts as a barrier. Others are strongly critical about the claims of eco-friendly products. There seems to be a very strong relation between perceived value and purchase frequency of eco-friendly products. This indicates that, if prices were to drop or if the perceived benefit to rise, many of the varying buyers would probably increase the frequency of their buying. Hence, price, together with the conviction and emphasis of the selling proposition based on environmental concerns, seem to play an increasingly crucial role, given the high level of current sensitivity. Another element acting as a barrier seems to be the skepticism and the lack of trust in claims these products have, nearly half of the European citizens (47%) do not trust the slogans used to communicate the eco-friendliness of producers. On an average, the youth seem to be more confident (six out often, 58%, interviewed between the age groups, 15-24 years showed trust versus 4 7 % of those above 55 years of age). Hence, even if the awareness seems mainly sensitive to environmental sustainability issues, much needs to be done to modify behaviour, also with regard to the purchase of ecofriendly products: to do this, firms can work on the perception of performance by providing more information on product features and the impact the products have on the environment during the production phase and upon their disposal. Providing information, perhaps with new regulation regarding labelling, could in fact sustain the higher price and provide consumers a trustworthy source from which to choose more green-friendly and "socially relevant" products. •
