THIS YEAR LET’S THINK DIFFERENTLY ABOUT THANKSGIVING DAY
Have we ever tried to define this word,
‘Thanksgiving’. If we tried to do this we would
need volumes of books to really come to the right
meaning or interpretation. This word “Thanksgiving” holds the key to our salvation. I truly believe
that Thanksgiving Day is a celebration that is
needed in this world. It is a beautiful occasion
bringing people and families together. God has
blessed us as a Nation. And everyone who stops to
give “Thanks to Him” should have Him on the top
of their lists.
Thanksgiving is not a celebration in which we
compile wish lists and share gifts with or draw up
resolutions for New Years, but it’s a day that we
should look back and say! ‘Thank You’. If we go
on percentages and ratings ‘Thanksgiving’ would
probably be on the bottom. Why? Because we are
so busy in our daily life that we neglect to appreciate what God has done for us and what He has
given to us. I’m going to take you on a journey
back in time, where a small handful of people from
the Mayflower ship who started the custom of setting aside a day of Thanksgiving to their God. They
had no homes, no means of transportation (except
their ship), they had no government handouts or
direction, their only food came from the sea, and
the forest, and they had to hunt or get it for themselves. They had no money, and if they did, they
had no place to spend it. They had no amusements,
they had no telephones, cell phones, or I-Pods to
communicate with their loved ones.
But they had something that is slowly dying in
our society. Their assets were, initiative, courage,
willingness to work, and a boundless faith in God.
Let’s look at these words: “Faith In God”. They
sound strange today in a time when the whole
world is in a state of panic and distress. We have
powerful forces that are at work to strip us of every reminder that the very foundation of our existence comes from God and we battle these temptations daily.
So, getting back to our topic, as I expressed
earlier that “Thanksgiving Day” is a distinctive
Holiday. It doesn’t commemorate a battle or
anyone’s birthday. It doesn’t celebrate historical
events, nor do we prosper from it financially, nor
does it have any materialistic value. It’s just a day

Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos
THIS YEAR LET’S THINK DIFFERENTLY ABOUT THANKSGIVING DAY
Continued from page 1
that we go through the mechanics and eat the traditional turkey with stuffing.
Is that why we celebrate this beautiful and meaningful holiday to fill our bellies with delicious food. I hope not!! To some,
it is a simple day that we express our nations thanks to God.
But if we look at today’s society, we are celebrating in a negative prospective. The more we get the less thankful we become, the less mindful of God we become and the more we
want. In the U.S. we have our traditional customs of decorating our homes, our streets, our towns, and cities when the holiday seasons arrive. And when we travel through the streets, we
all get this warm feeling inside despite the cold or snowy
weather. But would you agree that ‘Thanksgiving” is more
than decorations, more than entertainment, as wonderful as
that feels, isn’t “Thanksgiving” supposed to be about thanking
Almighty God for all the gifts that He has given to us throughout our lives.
There is a beautiful passage in ‘Psalms’ that describe what
Thanksgiving is. “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve
the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs.
Know that the Lord is God. It is He who made us, and we are
His, we are His people, the sheep of His pasture. “Enter His
gates with Thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give
thanks to Him and praise His name. For the Lord is good and
His love endures forever. His faithfulness continues through
all generations. (Psalm100).
But how many of us make this their center-point of how we
view the Thanksgiving celebration. There is something about
giving thanks together to God that breaks down the barriers

THIS YEAR LET’S THINK DIFFERENTLY
ABOUT THANKSGIVING DAY
MEET AND GREET THE TEACHERS
Continued from page 3
On Sunday, November 1st, the Sunday School staff along with the
Greek School staff and PTA will co-host the Coffee Hour after church in
a Meet and Greet session with the teachers.
This is a great opportunity for parents to meet and interact with
the teachers from both the Afternoon Greek school and Sunday school.
Don’t miss this opportunity to see what your son/daughter is learning in both schools.
P.L.C. NEWS
The next meeting for the Parish Life Committee (PLC) is scheduled for Thursday, November 5th at 6:30 pm in the Boardroom. Organizations who have not yet submitted their schedules/calendars for the year
are asked to please do so at November’s meeting. We look forward to
seeing everyone. If you are unable to attend, please call or e-mail Jimmy

GREEKTOWN CDC
A message from John E. Gavrilis, CEO
The Greektown CDC has made strides to promote our community.
We have recently completed a brand new website, full of pictures and
information detailing our efforts and initiatives for community development. Please visit www.greektownmd.org to see what is happening.
We have also been featured in the Hellenic News of America, circulated
throughout the east coast, with the hopes of attracting outside Greek investment into our community.
The next Greektown CDC community meeting will be held on
Wednesday, November 17, 2009 at 6:00pm at the Saint Nicholas Church.
We need your participation, ideas and concerns to be voiced so that the
state and city agencies know exactly what is happening in our community. We also would like to help give you the resources to start community projects and take the initiative to inspire others to get involved. We
have active community residents that participate in our committees.
Please come to the meeting to support your local community advocates
and find out what projects they are working on.
We would like to remind all residents and church parishioners to
dial 311 for all non-emergency issues and 911 for all emergency issues.
This includes reporting any illegal dumping and loitering as soon as you
witness any occurrence.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving.
BELIEVE IN YOUR COMMUNITY!
that bring unity and acceptance between people. Instead of
saying; “Look at what I have” (materialistically speaking), we
should be saying; ‘What can I do or offer to make this world a
better place to live in’. ‘Can I help the needy, or the less fortunate. Can I help a family that is having a rough time making
it? Can I visit someone that is ill and help him through the day.
Can I pick up a person and take him to church so he can worship God. There are so many things we can do to change the
environment that we live in.
I like the phrase that is written on some wristbands. My
favorite is: ‘If you where Jesus what would He do! We spend
hundreds, and thousands of dollars on different celebrations
throughout the year, has that changed our attitude towards our
responsibilities or are we wasting our time and energy on
things that can destroy our lives instead of improving it.
Today many of us feel that because our homes are filled with
all the riches and wealth, and our back accounts are secure for
the future, and that we are healthy, then everything is working
out the way we expect it. But I’m telling you, that these things
can change over night. There is no stability with wealth and
treasures. You can be rich today, poor tomorrow. Things of
that nature can be taken away, and if you base your luck on
those promises then we are all in for ride.
I would like to ask you these questions if I may: A. When
was the last time that you said from your lips, that you are
thankful for what God has given to you. B. When was the last
time that you experienced the love and comfort from God, and
that you shared that feeling with others. C. When was the last
time that you served the Lord and you felt His presence.
The Bible teaches, that if we witness on behalf of the Lord,
if we feed the hungry, if we visit the sick, if we clothe the naked, if we do the work of the Lord, whatever it might be, we
are serving the Lord. ‘Jesus said’, in as much as you have done
it unto the least of my brethren, you have done it unto me.’
So, I challenge everyone who reads this article to: Renew
yourselves in Christ: Reassess your loyalties; Reevaluate your
desires; Make A U-Turn in Life; and last Reaffirm your love
and thankfulness to your Father who is in Heaven.
That is how we begin to think differently not only on
‘Thanksgiving Day, but everyday that passes.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!
