Beagle - on the future of species
Almost 200 years ago Charles Darwin sailed around the world on the HMS Beagle, gathering
information and inspiration for his groundbreaking theory of evolution, published in his book On
the Origin of Species. What would it be like to take this journey again? What would we see if this
time we would look not for the origin, but for the future of species? VPRO, NTR and Canvas sailed
around the world on a modern-day Beagle. The magnificent sailing vessel the clipper Stad
Amsterdam was rigged with high-tech media equipment including a tv studio, satellite dishes and
HD-webcams. Our goal with the Beagle crossmedia project: Take everybody with us on a unique
scientific journey.

Quasi 200 anni fa Charles Darwin navigò intorno al mondo sul Beagle, il brigantino della marina
militare britannica, attraverso la quale il giovane naturologo raccolse tutte le informazioni utili per
dare vita alla teoria sull’evoluzione poi pubblicata nel libro “L'origine delle specie”. Cosa
succederebbe se oggi potessimo rivivere questo viaggio immaginifico per scoprire quale sarà il
futuro delle specie viventi? L’emittente olandese VPRO, NTR ha realizzato un nuovo viaggio a
bordo di un moderno vascello, un Beagle dell’era moderna.. Il magnifico veliero è stato attrezzato
con apparecchiature ad alta tecnologia, tra cui uno studio tv, antenne satellitari e una Webcam ad
alta definizione. L’obiettivo è semplice: portare tutti gli utenti della rete (e non solo) a bordo del
clipper Stad Amsterdam in un viaggio cross mediale verso nuove scoperte scientifiche.
