Cervia (Ravenna, Italy) May 9-10, 2011 Palazzo dei congressi via Jelenia Gora 12 - Milano Marittima Programme Aedes albopictus is a paradigmatic example of how the ongoing globalization makes possible the spread and establishment of exotic species in new geographical areas. Like many other invasive insect species Aedes albopictus features a very high adaptability to new habitats, being able to colonize permanently new ecological niches by competing with autochthones pre-existing species, to the extent that now, in Italy it is well established with high population densities in urbanized environments. Its high anthropophily combined with its vectorial capacity as regards to several arboviruses of sanitary concern, impose to consider Aedes albopictus as a key vector, as demonstrated by the epidemics of Chikungunya in Romagna in 2007 and by the cases of Dengue in South France and Croatia in 2010. These new and increasing health concerns require the development of efficient risk evaluation and control systems. The Emilia-Romagna regional plan for the surveillance and control of Aedes albopictus was started in 2006. After the Chikungunya epidemic in 2007 it was implemented in the direction of the optimization of the costs/benefits rate and of gathering all the necessary knowledge in order to involve all the public subjects, private citizens and the private sectors to share views and opportunities for more positive synergies in the actions for the suppression of the mosquito populations. The aim of this meeting is to share experiences and knowledge on thematic issues among national and international scientists in order to unravel the critical points of the monitoring and control programs and to improve them. The meeting attendants will also be presented the results of the research project on the Chikungunya virus infection developed in the framework of the Strategic Research Program “Zoonoses and exotic viral infections”, coordinated by “Istituto Superiore di Sanità”.
