16 LAKE COMO LIFESTYLE people Far from Hollywood and Hollywood thinking, Ron Thomson begins many working days on the lake. After a cappuccino and time playing with his two sons, 4 years old and 11 months old, he makes his commute. Forty five seconds later, work begins for the 43-year-old Canadian co-founder of Cameron Thomson Group Ltd. From his personal office in the turreted tower, he looks out onto Lake Como. And with a click, he connects with clients in the media and entertainment industries and his offices in London and Toronto. From this spot, Thomson has figured out what matters and what doesn’t. “It gives you great context to things,” he says. That includes making the old new again, from the stunning and storied castle home he shares with his wife and two sons, to hoisting the worldwide entertainment industry into the future, to building a community of friends and possibilities in Como. Not bad for a day’s work in a place he never expected to find. MISS RIGHT Born in Nova Scotia and raised in Toronto, Mr. Thomson studied drama at university, then mastered in English at the University of Edinburgh. He performed with the Edinburgh Opera, but soon tired of being poor, and decided instead to learn the business side of the E così decise di trovare una casa in Italia e venire a viverci con la sua famiglia, passando parte del tempo a Milano e parte a Toronto. He started his first company, Cyphertech, with a partner in 1992. Thomson moved to L.A. to head up the growing operation, which served the entertainment industry as a technology company. It wasn’t a huge commercial success, Mr. Thomson says, but it set out the path for what would come next. AudioTrack Watermark Solutions served the media and entertainment industries with information technology services, but this time, his company generated both success and notoriety. Then, 10 years ago, Mr. Thomson and a partner began Cameron Thomson, which has thrived since then. It is a business development company that helps media, entertainment and technology companies grow through corporate development, sales, marketing and finance. It was around this time that a auburn-haired Canadian woman walked into the scene. Vania Giusto, a Canadian born actress who’s family is from Veneto, was out one night at a club in Toronto. She lost track of her friends. But she found Mr. Thomson. “It’s like me meeting Mrs. Right,” he says, noting the word play on her last name, Giusto, or correct in Italian. They shared the same passions, the same sensibilities, and the timing was right. And when Ms. Giusto finally found her friends, she told them: “I met this guy and I think I’m going to marry him.” Five months later, she did just that. Over time, Cameron Thomson grew, with offices in Toronto, Milan and London. Ms. Giusto had LAKE COMO LIFESTYLE 17 P PERSONAGGI people <<È notevole - dice Ron Thomson - ed è davvero molto interessante>>. Then, one day, his son called the phone Daddy. “It hit me right between the eyes,” Mr. Thomson says. And so he decided to find a home in Italy and bring his family with him, spending part of their time in Milan, part in Toronto. He mentioned the plan to a friend, and that friend drove Mr. Thomson to Lake Como. It was nothing like Mr. Thomson expected. After much searching and help from new friends, Mr. Thomson and his family rented a home in Cernobbio for three years. ”It’s the most beautiful place in the world,” he told David Plant, his vice president of media and entertainment, at the time. “We love it there…” And soon, the time came for them to find a home of their own. Trovandosi così vicina a Milano e all’aeroporto, Como ha grandi potenzialità, sostiene Thomson. <<Avete tutto – conclude - cos’altro potreste mai volere?>>. 18 LAKE COMO LIFESTYLE Mr. Thomson and his wife visited villas on Como, but everything they found looked the same to them. “It’s very easy to get a big box,” Mr. Thomson says. One day, a real estate agent summed up their problem. “I know what you are looking for,” Mr. Thomson remembers the agent saying. “You are looking for a Van Gogh.” And that work of art was a castle in Carate Urio. Built in the 16th century and later redesigned by Tobias Scarpa, the castle was owned by the B&B family for 20 years, though they only lived in it for five. But under the dust and the cobwebs was something amazing --a castle with a modern, Moroccan feel. It was unconventional, with hundreds of palm trees and 20 terraces. “It has dimensions,” Mr. Thomson says. “It’s just so interesting.” Soon they bought the home, cleaned it up and uncovered beauty -- stone floors and stairways, a double garage that scoops into the mountain, iron gates, walls covered in a taupe marble dust. They childproofed and made the home work for business, too. “It really reflects their personality, and the personality of those who have also loved the place in previous years,” Mr. Plant says. Now, Ms. Giusto, 38, loves the outdoor spaces, the roof terrace with a spectacular view. And Mr. Thomson and his colleagues work from the office looking out over Como, a view of the lake stretching out before them, a little like the future. SEEING WITH NEW EYES From his lake office, Mr. Thomson might be far from Hollywood, but he’s at the heart of what’s going on with his company. Among their many projects, Cameron Thomson has recently worked with one of Italy’s oldest and largest publishers develop an online strategy for the 21st century, Mr. Thomson says. The company also started the Como Fund. With four L.A.-based partners, including two Academy Award winners (Mr. Thomson shares the name of one -screenwriter Dan Gordon) the Como Fund seeks to help A-list stars work on low-budget passion projects. Annually, they host the Como Forum on Media Content, bringing together people from film, television, music, investment banking and advertising. Ms. Giusto still acts when she’s in Toronto, though she is enjoying taking time out raising the kids in Como. She’s performed in the theater, commercials and in “Crime Spree,“ a 2003 film starring Harvey Keitel and Gerard Depardieu. She, her husband and children became Italian citizens, and in Lake Como they see tremendous possibilities. As the silk industry fades as the natural employer, Mr. Thomson has found talented people, beautiful locations and an entertainment industry just waiting to be created. “I’d like to see a new motion picture studio near here,” Mr. Plant agrees. “Perhaps associated with a school to train students on the latest technology being used to produce content...” So close to Milan and the airport, Como has the potential, Mr. Thomson says. The people here just have to see it -- a little like his work with aging companies, or the beauty he and his wife found in an empty house, or the newfound joy of building life in a place that has welcomed them. “You’ve got everything,” he says. “What more could you possibly want?”
