The re fore , ge ne rally combinations of biological and phys icoche mical me thods are us e d which gre atly incre as e the cos ts of the tre atme nt, making it unaffordable for SMEs , who voluntarily de cide not to comply with EU dire ctive s and dis charge without prior tre atme nt, caus ing s e ve re damage to the e nvironme nt. The s olution of SALTGAE to this is s ue cons is ts in the imple me ntation of innovative te chnologie s for e ach s te p of the was te wate r tre atme nt that will promote e ne rgy and re s ource e fficie ncy, and re duce cos ts . Amongs t the s e , the us e of halotole rant algae /bacte ria cons ortiums in HRAPs for the e limination of organic matte r and nutrie nts s tands out for its high adde d value : not only will it provide an e ffe ctive and e cological s olution for was te wate r tre atme nt, but als o it will re pre s e nt an innovative way of producing algal biomas s , that will s ubs e que ntly be valoriz e d into diffe re nt by-products , re ducing the e conomic and e nvironme ntal impact of the tre atme nt. More ove r, the proje ct will als o addre s s cros s -cutting barrie rs to innovation re late d to was te wate r by de ve loping a platform for the mobiliz ation and ne tworking of s take holde rs from all the diffe re nt s e ctors re late d to was te wate r, and for the dis s e mination of re s ults , e nabling the de ve lopme nt of a common roadmap for the alignme nt of le gis lation, re gulation and pricing me thodologie s and promoting financial inve s tme nt and paradigm s hift in pe rce ption from ‘was te wate r tre atme nt’ to ‘re s ource valoris ation’.
