Cari Passeggeri,
benvenuti a bordo.
Dear Passengers,
welcome aboard.
L’estate non è stata certo fra le più brillanti, dal punto di vista
meteorologico: soprattutto a luglio, che è sembrato un mese
quasi autunnale. E allora siamo davvero felici, noi di Blue Panorama, di poterci proporre per prolungare la Vostra estate
accompagnandoVi in quei posti dove anche a settembre e ottobre splende il sole, ci si abbronza e si fa il bagno.
In questo numero del Magazine abbiamo pensato di ricordare la nostra amata Cuba, una destinazione alla quale siamo
molto legati e sulla quale siamo leader di mercato, segnalando
Cayo Coco e Cayo Guillermo, due fantastiche isole dove si
possono dimenticare gli affanni cittadini e rigenerarsi totalmente. E poi lo Yucatan, splendido stato del Messico, dove il
relax e le attività balneari si possono combinare alla cultura,
con la visita a suggestivi siti archeologici, come Chichen Itza
o Tulum.
Non vogliamo certo trascurare la nostra bella Italia, alla
quale abbiamo voluto dedicare due servizi. Il primo a Roma,
capitale unica al mondo, scegliendo itinerari e luoghi che ce
la faranno conoscere da un punto di vista insolito: dall’alto,
grazie anche alle splendide terrazze. E poi Bergamo, orgoglio
del nord, città colta, interessante e produttiva, uno dei primi
dieci capoluoghi d’Italia quanto a volume nelle relazioni commerciali con il mondo.

This summer was certainly not among the brightest from
a meteorological point of view: especially in July, which almost seemed an autumn month. So we are really happy, us
of Blue Panorama, to be able to propose to prolong your
summer taking you in those places where, even in September and October, the sun shines, you can get a tan and you
can swim.
In this magazine issue we thought about our loved Cuba, a
destination to which we are very attached and for which we
are the market leader, signaling Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo, two fantastic islands where you can forget about city
life and regenerate completely. Then Yucatan, the beautiful
Mexican state, where relaxation and seaside activities can
be combined with culture and visits to fascinating archaeological sites, such as Chichen Itza or Tulum.
Of course we don’t want to overlook our beautiful Italy, to
which we have dedicated two pieces. The first to Rome, a
unique capital in the world, choosing itineraries and places
that will help us to see her from an unusual point of view:
from above, thanks to the wonderful terraces. Then Bergamo, pride of the north, a cultured, interesting and productive city, one of the top ten cities of Italy as for volume in
trade relations with the world.

che, folgorato dalla bellezza della sua vittima, non ha esitato a
contattarla. Una mossa poco furba quella del 28enne che, nonostante il volto coperto, è stato prontamente riconosciuto dalla
ragazza grazie a un vistoso tatuaggio sul collo, quindi denunciato e arrestato.

della nazionale di calcio inglese
Che Barack Obama fosse un appassionato di sport è cosa
nota, ma che giocasse da difensore della nazionale di calcio
inglese dev’essere stata una grossa sorpresa anche per lui.
Un giovane grafico forse poco esperto di calcio ha infatti
scambiato il Presidente degli Stati Uniti con Chris Smalling,
difensore del Manchester United, realizzando 2000 tazze con
il volto di Obama sui colori della bandiera inglese. Naturalmente l’errore gli è costato il posto di lavoro e l’azienda di
merchandising, colpevole di non essersi accorta per tempo
del clamoroso equivoco, ha dovuto liquidare le tazze “incriminate” a un distributore specializzato in pezzi difettati.
C’è da scommettere che la tazza diventerà un oggetto per
collezionisti.

colors of the British flag. Naturally, the error cost him his job and the merchandis-
ing company, guilty of not having noticed
for a while the dramatic equivocation,
had to liquidate the “incriminating”
cups to a specialist distributor of defective parts. You can bet that the cup will
become a collector's item.

I mondiali di calcio sono ormai un ricordo, ci hanno fatto emozionare, soffrire, piangere ed esultare e, per qualcuno, sono stati
addirittura fatali: in Cina, infatti, si sono verificati almeno tre casi
di morti di sonno per aver passato troppo tempo davanti alle
partite in tv. Di certo non ha aiutato il fuso orario con il Brasile
(11 ore indietro rispetto a Pechino) che ha tenuto i cinesi incollati
allo spettacolo della Coppa del Mondo anche alle 4 del mattino,
rinunciando alle indispensabili ore di riposo. Per fronteggiare il
problema sono nati appositi reparti ospedalieri che curano la
cosiddetta “malattia
da Coppa del Mondo”:
sono decine di migliaia
i ricoveri per sintomi
come crampi, inappetenza, problemi cardiaci,
paranoia e ansia, con
gravi effetti su tutto il
sistema immunitario.
È bene ricordare che i
Mondiali sono un grande
spettacolo, ma non valgono di certo il prezzo di
una vita.

abissi, windsurf sui cavalloni, arrampicate sugli strapiombi, avventure nella giungla. Come se non bastassero le avventure di quella urbana, di giungla. Discese nelle
metropolitane, slalom nel traffico, corse per gli autobus, file
alle poste, cacce ai parcheggi, mandrie al mercato. No, l’avventura, quella vera, è riscoprire quel piacere infantile di vivere senza preoccupazione alcuna se non quella di doversi ricordare, di tanto in tanto, di girarsi per prendere l’abbronzatura
– a far sì che il nostro Mojito sia sempre fresco ci pensa già
qualcun altro. E dove meglio si può sfuggire ai nervi sfatti e ai
ritmi impossibili se non in un piccolo arcipelago cubano che
solo fino a pochi anni fa non era nemmeno toccato dall’asfalto,
dove le strade sono di sabbia finissima e per parcheggiare basta lasciare la bici dove capita. Cayo Coco e Cayo Guillermo
sono queste, due isole così vicine ma così lontane da Cuba, con

Lo scrittore Hernest Hemingway,
avventuriero e pescatore, è stato tra i primi
a scoprire le bellezze dei Jardines del Rey,
tanto da volerci ambientare libri e racconti:

pronti ad esaudire i nostri desideri. La
barriera corallina abbraccia le isole e

tutto quello che resta sono una spiaggia color avorio, l’oceano cristallino
e l’ondeggiare dell’amaca tesa quanto
basta all’ombra delle palme, allora e
solo allora può cominciare il viaggio
avventuroso alla riscoperta della tranquillità.
«Ecco, non vedi quanto è verde e promettente?» Parole di Thomas Hudson, l’alter
ego di Hemingway nel suo romanzo Isole nella corrente che dipinge le bellezze
della piccola Cayo Guillermo. Lo scrittore, pescatore e avventuriero è stato tra i
primi a scoprire le bellezze dei Jardines
del Rey, tanto da scegliere l’arcipelago

tranquillity
A
dventure holidays, they call them. Diving into the abyss,
surfing on the waves, climbing on cliffs, safaris in the
jungle. Oh, our poor nerves. As if the adventures of
an urban jungle were not enough. Descents into the subway,
slaloms through traffic, running for busses, queues at the post
office, searching for parking, herds at the market. No, the
adventure, the real one, is to rediscover the childlike pleasure
of living with no worries at all if not that of having to remember
to turn around, occasionally, to get a perfect tan – to ensure our
Mojito is always cold there is someone else. So, where better
to escape from the tense nerves and impossible rhythms if not
in a small Cuban archipelago that up to only a few years ago it
was not even touched by asphalt, where the streets are made of
fine sand and to park you just leave your bike where ever. Cayo
Coco and Cayo Guillermo are this, two islands so close but so
far from Cuba, with their first-class resort which are always ready
to make all our wishes come true. The barrier reef embraces the
islands and shields them from the outside world: 22 kilometres of
immaculate coastline to share with the phlegmatic pink flamingos
that colour all of Cuba, from Playa Flamingo to Playa Pilar. The

The writer, a fisherman and adventurer was one of the first to

shirt, immaculate, untouched, is pulled
out with a mechanically perfect gesture,
from a drawer inside which, in a rigorous tidiness which shows obsession, are
other shirts, all white, all the same, all
immaculate, all untouched. This is Colin
Firth, George in A Single Man, the first
opera by the American Fashion designer
Tom Ford, a movie of rare aesthetic perfection, in which every detail of the set,
costumes, dialogues has been studied,
carefully thought out and measured in
relation to everything: the clean design,
perfect, rigorously symmetrical and balanced, portrays, perhaps conceals the
absolute imperfection of an existential
drama where chaos has completely taken over. George is a homosexual professor trapped in mourning for the loss of
his partner - the film becomes an icon of
gay cinema – decides to end it all. The
British actor's performance is superb and
earned him an Oscar nomination, only
a premonition for the statuette that will

n'estensione vocale di tre ottave e mezzo, sette milioni di dischi, quattro Festival di Sanremo
dove ha collezionato un primo, un secondo e un
terzo posto, un Sanremo Giovani vinto alla grande, record
tra le cantanti italiane della sua generazione per numero di
settimane di permanenza nella classifica FIMI, un numero
incalcolabile di premi e riconoscimenti: se sono i numeri
quelli che bisogna andare a guardare per decretare il successo di un artista, allora Giorgia Todrani, romana, classe
’71, in arte solo Giorgia, il successo se lo è straguadagnato.
Tuttavia Giorgia non è solo i suoi numeri. Quel timbro netto, riconoscibilissimo, duttile e eclettico, a volte appena venato da un'ombra di nostalgia e di calore umano, lo si affina
con la tecnica, certo, è frutto del talento, non c'è dubbio,
ma non può che sgorgare da una riflessione e un'esperienza

Social Club. Impossibile nominarli tutti. E l'Italia? Fra gli altri, Avion Travel, Stefano Bollani e – c'era da chiederselo?
– ovviamente Giorgia.

Roma Brass Quintet nasce dall’incontro di strumentisti provenienti da varie Orchestre e Istituzioni: Accademia
Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Orchestra
Sinfonica della R.A.I., Conservatorio, Banda Nazionale dell’Arma dei
Carabinieri. è un quintetto d’ottoni
con programmi che trascendono dal
normale concerto per trasformarsi,
attraverso gag ed introduzioni parlate,
in un vero e proprio spettacolo dove la
musica, comunque protagonista, viene
resa ancora più godibile.
Cosa unisce i cinque ottoni di Roma
Brass Quintet?
Il comune desiderio di sperimentare
musica concisa, antiretorica, divertente, "piccola e grande" allo stesso
tempo. Infatti questa formazione è
piccola, pratica e funzionale, ma con
un grande repertorio: la trascrizione
permette di spaziare dall’Opera al Musical, dalla musica legata al Cinema a

Amiamo pensare e ripeterci che “La
Grande Musica è solo quella che racconta le emozioni del nostro cuore”.
Il prossimo progetto in cantiere?
Il nostro prossimo sogno è realizzare un
cd che racconti l’evoluzione del jazz da
New Orleans a Broadway, toccando le
storie e i personaggi che diedero vita a
quel fantastico periodo storico, mitico e
pieno di creatività.

group born?
Roma Brass Quintet was born from the
coming together of instrumental musicians from various orchestras and Institutions: Accademia Nazionale di Santa
Cecilia, RAI Symphony Orchestra, Conservatorio, the National Band of the
Carabinieri. It is a brass quintet with
programs that transcend the normal
concert to transform itself, through gags
and spoken introductions, in a real show
where the music, always protagonist, is
made even more enjoyable.
What unites the five brass members of
the Roma Brass Quintet?
The common desire to experiment with
concise, rhetorical, funny music, "large
and small" all at the same time. In fact,
this formation is small, practical and functional, but with a large repertoire: the
transcription allows to go from opera to
musicals, from music linked to cinema to
that of Cartoons, without forgetting the
classical music tradition, such as Monteverdi, Gabrieli, Palestrina and Bach.
A repertoire that embraces the most
diverse expressions of music from
Baroque to the jazz of the early 900:
What is the red thread that you decided to follow to draw up the line up of
the album Our favorite things?
Our favorite things is to be the guide of a
few years of concerts, meetings and journeys made by the Rome Brass Quintet,
ranging eclectically and with fun through
diverse music genres: it is a musical journey of 500 years.
What is your motto?
We love to believe in and repeat “The
greatest music is the only one able to tell
the emotions of our heart”.
The next project on the cards?
Our next dream is to create a CD that
tells of the evolution of jazz from New
Orleans to Broadway, touching upon stories and characters that gave life to this
fantastic period of history, mythical and
full of creativity.

completi sartoriali oversize; negli anni ‘50 comparvero i
cappellini e i foulard colorati degli Hipsters, seguiti dalle
minigonne di Mary Quant e dagli stravaganti abiti Beats della
Swinging London anni ’60. Poi gli Hippies, tutti fiori e immagini
psichedeliche, i giubbotti di pelle dei Rockers, il look curato
dei Mods, le borchie dei Punks, le polo degli Skinheads, le taglie
extralarge dell’Hip Hop.

Homeless chic
Lo street style raggiunge la sua forma più estrema in
quella che gli ambienti più autorevoli della moda ormai
definiscono “Homeless Street Fashion”, l’ultima tendenza in fatto di stile che prende ispirazione dai senzatetto. Il suo personaggio simbolo è Brother Sharp, un
clochard cinese diventato suo malgrado icona di stile
per via degli originali quanto improbabili accostamenti
in fatto di vestiario. Una scelta sicuramente dettata dalla
sua condizione, ma si sa, la necessità aguzza l’ingegno:
pare che il bel mendicante abbia ispirato l’intera collezione 2010 della stilista Vivienne Westwood e di recente
si è reso protagonista del video musicale Cane, atteso
singolo della band milanese Gli Amanti.

Street Fashion”, the latest trend in terms of style which
is inspired by the homeless. The symbolic character is
Brother Sharp, a homeless man whom against his will became a Chinese style icon because of the original and
improbable combinations in terms of clothing. A choice
surely dictated by his condition, but it is known, necessity
is the mother of invention: it seems that the handsome

n the beginning there were the Zooties, the blacks of the 40s with their oversized
tailored suits; in the 50s hats and colorful scarves appear on the Hipsters, followed by the miniskirts of Mary Quant and the extravagant Beats clothes of the
Swinging London in the 60s. Then the Hippies, all about flowers and psychedelic
images, the leather jackets of the Rockers, the cured look of the Mods, studs of the
Punks, the polos of the Skinheads, the extra large sizes of Hip Hop.
It has always been the youth culture to dictate the rules of the trends and influence buying: Christian Lacroix himself stated that «very often the most exciting
clothes come from the poorest people». The street is the ideal catwalk to
parade styles and trends by common
young ones where designers get their
inspiration for their collections. There
are now countless blogs and sites that
show images of people photographed
in the street and turned into a style icon.
The important thing is to stand out from
others and always go against the tide:
never wear whatever, because behind a

Flavia Pennetta? Tante,
tantissime, e «prima o poi
arriverà il momento di metterle». Poco tempo per i tacchi, i
piedi della tennista sono troppo occupati a correre sui campi da gioco.
Dieci titoli nel singolo, quindici nel
doppio, quattro Federation Cup e
prima italiana a raggiungere la top
10 mondiale. I numeri di Flavia
Pennetta parlano chiaro, ma non
raccontano tutta la sua storia, fatta
di vittorie sì, ma anche di sacrifici e
sconfitte. Le partite più importanti della bella tennista di Brindisi si
sono giocate lontane dal campo. E
lì, come nello sport, qualche volta
si vince, ma sono le sconfitte quelle che si fanno sentire davvero. A
cominciare da quelle del cuore: nel
2007 attraversa il suo momento
peggiore quando viene a sapere dai
giornali che il collega e compagno
Carlos Moyá aveva intrecciato una
relazione con un'altra donna. La
rottura è devastante, Flavia perde

ow many dress shoes does Flavia Pennetta have?
Many, many pairs, and «sooner or later the time
will come when I’ll wear them». Little time for
heels, the tennis player’s feet are too busy running on the
court. Ten singles titles, fifteen doubles, four Federation
Cups and the first Italian to reach top 10 in the world rankings. Numbers speak clearly for Flavia Pennetta, but numbers only tell part of the story, made of victories, yes, but
also of sacrifices and losses. The most important matches
Flavia had to play were not taken on a tennis pitch. And
there, like in sports, sometimes you win, but the defeats are
those that leave a mark. Starting from those of the heart: in
2007 she goes though her worst moment when she learns
about the infidelity of her colleague and partner Carlos
Moyá. The breakup is devastating, Flavia loses confidence
and dozens of ranking positions: «after being defeated 13
times in the first turn I started to think I couldn’t even defeat
my granny». But the bad times led her to bump into Gisela
Dulko, who also was cheated and abandoned by her companion. Together they are determined to take a revenge
on their broken hearts by playing it out on the pitch: they
play doubles and win everything, becoming first ranked in
the world. Then, in 2008, with the WTA Finals at stake, Flavia learns about the sudden passing of his colleague and
friend Federico Luzzi: faced with the choice, she gives up
the tournament to say him the last farewell. Despite continuos hurdles and injuries, match after match, the following year Flavia Pennetta obtains an historical achievement:
with 15 consecutive victories she reaches the tenth place in
the world ranking, opening the golden age of Italian tennis
together with colleagues and friends Errani and Vinci. And
although in the last few years the other two “azzurre” may
have stolen the spotlights, Pennetta carries on doing wonders. Being past her 30 and suffering from a bad wrist injury
made everyone think of a retirement, Flavia included: «I
was really cut up, a wrecked woman. I said: if by the end of
the year I can’t get back up in the top 50, I quit». But in just
a few months she climbs more than an hundred in ranks,
gets back the 12th place and crowns her success winning
the Indian Wells in California, the most prestigious tournament following those of the Grand Slam. Flavia keeps on
running: high heels will have to wait.

altri brevetti rivoluzionari, la dobbiamo a lui. Dobbiamo a lui anche il motore a induzione, lo stesso che, 120 anni dopo il suo brevetto, troviamo sotto il cofano della Tesla Model S – non letteralmente, visto che il vano motore è completamente vuoto. «Senza la
genialità e la visione di Tesla, la nostra automobile non esisterebbe. Siamo
sicuri che se fosse vivo oggi, Nikola Tesla guarderebbe con interesse e approvazione alla nostra macchina elettrica al 100%», dicono dalla Tesla
Motors. Questa è la Model S: a guardarla c’è da chiedersi perché

non ci abbiano pensato le grandi case automobilistiche – la Tesla è una compagnia giovanissima ma con
ambizioni da grande. Una berlina cinque porte che
va da 0 a 100 in 4,4 secondi senza consumare una
goccia di benzina. 210 km/h di massima raggiungibili nello spazio di 800 metri e una maneggevolezza
che nonostante i quasi cinque metri di lunghezza
fa invidia ad una coupé. I 421 cavalli si scrollano di
dosso il ruolo di city car affibbiato al motore elettrico, mentre il design tradizionale ed elegante aiuta
ad accettare senza traumi tutta la modernità che
la scocca nasconde. Un pieno di batteria si traduce
in 400 kilometri di autonomia: basta un’ora con la
semplice presa di casa per ricaricare 50km, mentre
con le stazioni Tesla Supercharger, in continua diffusione, la ricarica completa arriva dopo 40 minuti.
Paragonato al lancio dell’iPhone sul mercato degli
smartphone, lo sbarco della Model S sta rivoluzionando quello automobilistico, forte della doppia
anima ecologica/supercar che la Tesla è riuscita ad
infondergli. Sicuri che Nikola Tesla ne andrebbe

na grande novità per il mondo dei motori: al via il
tanto atteso Supercar Roma Auto Show. Accelerazione e velocità ma anche sicurezza e ambiente:
tutto questo è Supercar. Roma scalda i motori e il pubblico
è pronto sulla linea di partenza. L’adrenalina è a mille, la tensione alle stelle, le gomme sono calde.
Dopo Ginevra, Parigi, Londra e Bruxelles, anche la Capitale d’Italia diventa teatro di un grande evento fieristico sul
mondo dell’auto. Roma inaugura la sua prima edizione di Supercar Roma Auto show: dal 10 al 12 di ottobre presso Fiera
Roma un appuntamento con le auto da sogno, sportive, da
competizione, esclusive e personalizzate.
Un’anticipazione dell’evento è stata data in occasione dei
Motodays 2014: un grande stand ha messo in bella mostra
due gioielli dell’ingegneria e del design automobilistico. Una

ig news for the world of motorsport: the go ahead for
the long awaited Supercar Rome Auto Show. Acceleration and speed but also safety and environment: all this
is Supercar. Rome revs engines up and the audience is ready at
the starting line. Adrenaline is pumping, tension is high, tires
are warm.
After Geneva, Paris, London and Brussels, the capital of Italy
too becomes a theatre to a major exhibition on the automotive world. Rome inaugurates its first edition of Supercar Rome

trasportare dal ponentino e osserva da lassù cosa si vede.
Una panoramica a volo d’uccello è una prospettiva incantevole per guardare la città più bella del mondo. Credere
che Roma sia unicamente un insieme, per quanto bellissimo e ricco, di strade, piazze, monumenti e palazzi, è molto
più che riduttivo: Roma è un agglomerato urbano complesso e per capirlo meglio lo si potrebbe pensare come ad
una torta fatta di tanti strati di pan di spagna.
Dal basso, la Roma sotterranea, con il suo perfetto sistema fognario dei tempi degli ultimi Re, le domus, le catacombe e i mitrei. A salire un secondo strato di elementi
archeologici fa capolino, chi più timidamente chi più maestosamente, sul tessuto urbano. Una terza stratificazione
ancora è quella che si trova alle sponde del fiume: gli alti
argini in travertino separano questo livello di città con il
resto. Lì, accanto al fiume che scorre senza soluzione di
continuità da Flaminio a Magliana fino al mare, tutto è
più ovattato e il brulichio di ciò che accade, al di là, al
di sopra, appare come un lontano ricordo. Sopra quello,
il livello stradale: il più conosciuto e frequentato, quello
che generalmente identifichiamo come il “nostro livello”.
Ma oltre questo, a salire, c’è altro: ecco che ci sono i tetti.

ze romane ha vita un mondo, una realtà parallela che non
guarda in basso ma si muove, mangia, brinda, festeggia,
pensa, prende il sole e legge il giornale, fa l’amore e progetta un futuro. Solo qualche volta questo mondo getta una
sguardo in basso, sulle strade e sulle piazze. Ma solo qualche volta. Bisogna salire in alto per immergersi in questo
mondo, non dal Gianicolo, nè dall’osservatorio astronomico di Monte Mario, non da lontano, bensì immersi nella
città stessa. Senza distacco, senza distanze, perché quello
dei tetti è un mondo che vive, non osserva, ma patisce - dal
pathos greco, emozionarsi. Quel mondo è sulle terrazze di
via Frattina, di via della Croce, di Piazza Fontanella Borghese, è all’ultimo piano di via dei Baullari, sull’altana di
Palazzo Bonaparte, affacciato ad una finestrella di Piazza
dell’Orologio. Ha fatto un’ultima rampa a piedi e ora beve
un bicchiere di vino.
Trovando la scala giusta per salire, Roma vista così non si
dimenticherà mai. Forse è proprio questa Roma la Città
Eterna.

soundtrack, Walt Disney). Now your turn: Try and imagine flying
over roof tops, let the wind carry you and observe from up there
what you see. A bird's eye panoramic is a charming perspective
from which to see the most beautiful city in the world. Believing
that Rome is a unique togetherness, as beautiful as it is rich, of
streets, squares, monuments and palaces, is much more than an
understatement: Rome is an urban complex, and to understand it
better we can think of it as a sponge cake made with many layers.
From below, subterranean Rome, with its perfect drainage system from the times of the last Kings, le domus, the catacombs
and mitrei. Going up a second layer of archaeological elements
shows, some timidly some majestically on the urban makings. A
third stratification yet, it is the one that found on the banks of the
river: the high banks of travertine separate this level with the rest
of the city. There, next to the river, which flows seamlessly from
Flaminio to Magliana then to the sea, everything is muffled and
the swarming of what happens, beyond and above, looks like a
distant memory. Above this, the street level: the well known and
popular, the one which we generally identify as “our level”. But
above this, going up, there is more: here there are roofs.
The rooftops of Rome: Rome is the city of roofs and on the Roman terraces there is a whole world, a parallel reality that does
not look down, but it moves, eat, toasts, celebrates, thinks, sun-
bathes and reads the newspaper, makes love and plans a future. Only at times this world casts a glance at the bottom,
on the streets and squares. But only sometimes. You have to
climb to the top to be part of this world, not from the Gianicolo, nor from the astronomical observatory of Monte Mario,
not from far away, but immersed in the city itself. Without
separation, distances, because that of the roofs is a world that
lives, it does not observe, but it has pathos – from the greek
pathos, emotions. That world is on the terraces of Via Frattina,
Via della Croce, Piazza Fontanella Borghese and on the last
floor of Via dei Baullari, on the rooftop of Palazzo Bonaparte,
looking out of a window off Piazza Dell’Orologio. He walked
one last stair case and now drinks a glass of wine. Finding the
right stairs to climb, Rome as this is sight that will not be forgotten. Perhaps this is Rome as the Eternal City.

e case color pastello intorno alla
piazza centrale, la cattedrale, il
palazzo del governo: un impianto urbanistico tipicamente coloniale
che mette di buon umore e sa subito
di relax. Piante grasse fanno resistenza
a un terreno arso e roccioso, la calura
con la sua aria ferma sembra rallentare
tutto, il tempo, le azioni e forse anche i
nostri pensieri, per un attimo abbiamo
l’allucinazione che Speedy Gonzales
possa sfrecciarci d’improvviso accanto - “Andale! Andale!”. Ma questo non
accade: di Speedy Gonzales e del suo
giallo sombrero neanche l’ombra.
Di ombra, a dire il vero, ne abbiamo
ben poca. Siamo nella piazza centrale
di Merida, la spendida capitale dello
stato dello Yucatán, Messico. Ci siamo
solo noi, un’amaca, un bicchiere di tequila e una pianta di agave. Il Messico
è tutto lì: il relax è tutto qui.
E bisogna dire solo grazie a quella pianta di agave. Ma perché?
L’agave è una pianta che i collezionisti
portarono nel vecchio continente nel
XIX secolo. E che si adattò superbamente al clima mediterraneo, trovando
il suo humus ideale nella meravigliosa
Sicilia. E nel resto del meridione bruciato dal sole. Ma si tratta in realtà di
una pianta originaria del Messico e difatti di agave qui a Merida se ne possono vedere tante. Hanno un andamento
scultoreo, con le loro foglie rigide dise-

gnano forme sinuose che il vento non
riesce a scalfire. Le loro infiorescenze

È ricavato da un certo tipo di agave
l’henequén, il cordame – sokil – di cui
è fatta l’amaca su cui con poco sforzo
ci dondoliamo. Una corda resistente
che da sempre è usata per realizzare
questa seduta tradizionale che più di
ogni altra si associa alla famosa siesta.
E così anche la tequila, l’alcolico che ci
ha accompagnato dritto dritto a tante sbornie di gioventù è un distillato
dell’agave blu, detta anche agave tequilana – il marchio DOC è riconosciuto
solo con una percentuale minima di
distillato del 51%.
È lei quindi, l’agave, la regina del relax
messicano.
Arrivati a Merida, dopo aver fatto una
suggestiva passeggiata nel coloratissimo mercato, dopo aver visitato la città,
concedetevi una siesta e un buon bicchiere di tequila perché senza questi
non potrete mai dire di aver assaporato
la vera anima del Messico.
Chichen Itzá,
le tracce della
storia
Situato tra Cancún e Playa del Carmen, il
sito archeologico di Chichen Itzá è il più visitato di tutto lo Yucatán. L'antica città, fondata nel IV secolo, abbandonata sei secoli
più tardi e ripopolata nel Trecento, è stata
una delle più potenti della civiltà Maya. Al
centro di tutto il Castillo, la celeberrima
piramide messicana. A est il Templo de
los Guerreros, il Tempio dei Guerrieri, e la
sua statua di Chac-mool, personaggio seduto che tiene sul ventre una coppa – che

the heat with its still air seems to slow everything down; time,
movements, and perhaps even our thoughts, for a moment we
have the hallucination that we can see Speedy Gonzales suddenly dash beside us – “Andale! Andale!”. But this does not
happen: not even the shadow of Speedy Gonzales and his yellow sombrero.
Of shadow, to tell the truth, there is very little. We are in the central square of Merida, the splendid capital of the Yucatan state,
Mexico. There is only us, a hammock, a glass of tequila and the

The agave is a plant that collectors brought in to the old continent in the nineteenth century. It adapted superbly to the Mediterranean climate, finding its ideal habitat in the beautiful Sicily,
and in the rest of the sun burned south. But it is actually a plant
originally from Mexico and as a fact, here in Merida, we can
see many of these plants. They have a sculptural shape, with
their stiff leaves they draw sinuous shapes that the wind cannot change. Their inflorescences can reach impressive heights,
surpassing ten times the height of the plant itself.
And made from a certain type of agave the henequén, a cord
– called sokil – from which hammocks, where we rock with lit-

Situated between Cancún and Playa del Carmen, the archaeological site
of Chichen Itzá is the most visited of Yucatán. The ancient city, founded in
the fourth century, abandoned six centuries later and then repopulated
in the fourteenth century, had been one of the most powerful of the Mayan civilization. At the centre of it all the Castillo, the famous Mexican
pyramid. To the east the Templo de los Guerreros, the Temple of the
Warriors, and its statue of Chac-Mool, a seated figure holding a cup on
the abdomen – which was said to contain scarified offers – dominate the
columns of the Grupo de las Mil Columnas. Over the central plateau, behind the Tzompantli, a wall of carved with skulls that evokes human sacrifices practiced at Chichen, is the Juego de Pelota, the largest Mexican
field used for ball games.

là, immutabile nel valore e nell’aspetto. Questa è più o meno la storia di
ogni pietra preziosa, ma non quella di
The Blue, il diamante blu più grande
del mondo. Recentemente la pietra è
stata venduta dalla celebre casa d’aste Christie’s alla gioielleria Harry
Winston – proprietario della Swatch
Group – per 23,795 milioni di dollari.
Un affare vantaggioso? Gli azionisti
della Harry Winston probabilmente non hanno indagato a fondo sulla storia che si cela dietro The Blue, ammaliati dal suo aspetto
straordinario. Sin dal giorno in cui fu scoperto in India – grazie
all’esploratore Jean Baptiste Tavernier nel diciassettesimo secolo

The Blue: 24 milioni di dollari
sponsabile delle finanze francesi. Quest’ultimo fu ben presto
arrestato per truffa e il diamante fece
ritorno a corte, custodito dalla regina Maria Antonietta in persona. Anche in questo caso
la storia ci insegna che la sovrana e il suo consorte non
ebbero una vita felice, né tantomeno una fine pacifica. Dopo la morte della
famiglia reale si persero le tracce della gemma, finché, nel 1824, ricomparve tra
le mani del banchiere Henry Thomas Hope che lo ribattezzò Blue Hope. In seguito il diamante fu ereditato da altri sventurati proprietari – dal sultano Adul
Hamid II, spodestato di tutti i suoi averi, a Mrs Evalyn Walsh McLean, suicida
nel 1947 – finchè il collezionista di gioielli Henry Winston lo donò – forse per
disfarsene? – allo Smithsonian Institute di Washington, luogo in cui è rimasto
esposto fino a poco tempo fa.

says a famous
advertising slogan. Years
go by, owners of the gem
change, but she is always
there, unchanging in value
and appearance. This is pretty much the
story of every precious stone, but not the
one of The Blue, the largest blue diamond
in the world. Recently, the stone was sold
by the famous auction house Christie's at
the Harry Winston jewellery store - owner
of the Swatch Group - for 23.795
million dollars.
A good deal? Harry Winston’s shareholders, bewitched by her stunning looks, probably
had not thoroughly investigated the history that lies behind The Blue. Since the day
it was first discovered in India – thanks to the explorer Jean Baptiste Tavernier in the
seventeenth century - the diamond has always marked the misfortune of its owners.
Tavernier stole the gem from an Indian idol and took it to France where it was bought
by King Louis XIV, whom later reduced its size from 112 to 67.5 carats, to shape it as a

droplet and give it to his protégé, Madame De Montespan. However,
immediately after receiving the gift, the noble lady ended her graces
with the king and the precious stone ended up in the hands of Nicolas
Fouquet, in charge of the French finances. The latter was soon arrested
for fraud and the diamond went back to the King’s court, guarded by
Queen Marie Antoinette herself. Again in this case, history teaches us
that the Queen and her consort did not have a happy life, never mind a
peaceful end. After the death of the royal family there were no traces of
the gem until 1824, when it reappeared in the hands of the banker Henry
Thomas Hope who renamed it the Blue Hope. Following this, the diamond was inherited by other unfortunate
owners - by the Sultan Adul Hamid II, ousted from all his
possessions, to Mrs. Evalyn Walsh McLean, who committed suicide in 1947 – Right up until the jewellery collector
Henry Winston donated it – perhaps to get rid of it? - to
the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, a place where it
had been exposed up until recently.

si concentra sulla storia, con l'intento di
indagare lo stato attuale dell’architettura
indagando anche su quale potrebbe essere il suo futuro.
Absorbing Modernity 1914/2014 è il
tema legato ai padiglioni nazionali. L'invito è quello ad approfondire i processi
che hanno determinato l'attuale aspetto
dell'architettura globale, individuando
caratteristiche e/o resistenze che la modernizzazione ha assunto in rapporto alle
identità nazionali. Per Cino Zucchi, curatore del padiglione Italia Innesti/grafting,
quella del Bel Paese è una modernità
anomala poiché l'innovazione si traduce
nella capacità di interpretare gli stati precedenti. Non un adattamento del nuovo

The curator Rem Koolhaas has chosen the theme Fundamentals which develops in three complementary events:
Absorbing Modernity 1914-2014, Elements of Architecture and Monditalia. Fundamentals focuses on history,
with the intent to investigate the current state of architecture also investigating what would be its future.
Absorbing Modernity 1914/2014 is a theme linked to national pavilions. An invitation is made to investigate the
processes that have determined the current look of global
architecture, identifying characteristics and or resistances
that modernization has taken in relation to national identity. For Cino Zucchi, curator of the Italian pavilion Innesti/
graffiti, the Bel Paese has
an anomalous modernity
since innovation translates
into the ability to interpret
previous states. It is not an
adaptation of the new to
the already existing but a
connection, defined as the
ability of Italian architecture – from the First World
War to today – to intervene
in urban contexts.

Il Novecento ci ha lasciato in eredità due fondamentali teorie senza
le quali la tecnologia odierna non
avrebbe modo di esistere: la relatività generale di Einstein, secondo cui lo Spazio/Tempo è curvo e
continuo, e la meccanica quantistica che, al contrario, afferma che è
piatto e finito. Due teorie di grande successo che si contraddicono
l'un l'altra ma che, paradossalmente, funzionano entrambe. Nel suo
ultimo libro Carlo Rovelli spiega in maniera semplice e originale
questa grande contraddizione individuando la soluzione in una
terza teoria che rappresenta il principale problema aperto nella
fisica fondamentale: la gravità quantistica. Un insieme di equazioni che ha conseguenze estreme: lo spazio e il tempo non
esistono più e tutto il nostro sapere sulla natura viene rimesso
in discussione. La realtà non è come ci appare è un libro pensato per tutti quei lettori che non sanno nulla di fisica ma sono
curiosi di sapere, ed è soprattutto il riconoscimento dei limiti
del sapere dell'uomo. È grazie a questa consapevolezza che
abbiamo imparato così tanto sul mondo e ancora continueremo a imparare.
«Ecco qualcosa che è bello
fare: guardare con occhi nuovi
le erbacce che colonizzano le
nostre città, esplorare... e poi,
magari, immaginare, rinverdire, rinaturalizzare, fare come
le piante infestanti: smontare, fare buchi, lasciare spazio
all’invasione, fessurare! È proprio vero: agire non vuoi dire
sempre fare... ma anche scovare i mostri benevoli nascosti, forse addirittura diventarlo
anche un po'».
Il libro di Lorenza Zambon è un testo semplice, delicato, di
poche pagine, ma detiene la forza dirompente delle idee rivoluzionarie, e fa intuire come questo saggio breve potrebbe
divenire presto un testo cult tra i guerrieri del gardening urbano. Ben lontani dall’immaginario romantico del giardinaggio
come piacevole passatempo delle signore bene – non che
quest’ultime non sappiamo tirar fuori i loro attrezzi da giardino all’occorrenza! – il libro della Zambon presenta il pensiero
che anima il guerrilla gardening e ne introduce le principali
pratiche.

The 20th century has left us with two fundamental theories without
which today's technology would have no way to exist: Einstein's
general relativity, according to which Space/Time is curved and
continuous, and quantum mechanics, which on the contrary, supports that it is flat and ending. Two highly successful theories that
contradict each other but that, paradoxically, both work. In his latest
book, Carlo Rovelli explains in a simple and original way this great
contradiction by individuating the solution in a third theory which
represents the main problem in fundamental physics: quantum

The book by Lorenza Zambon is an easy read, delicate, of few
pages, but it has the explosive force of revolutionary ideas
and shows how this short essay may soon become a cult text
among the warriors of urban gardening. A far cry from the imagined romantic gardening as a pleasant pastime for well to
do ladies, not that the latter don’t know how to bring out their
garden tools when necessary! The book by Zambon presents
the idea that animates the guerrilla gardening and introduces
the main practices.

Inadeguatezza senza troppe pretese – «La vita, in fondo, non è
che uno slalom tra figure di merda»-, sicuramente una raccolta
che ha il pregio di farci ascoltare alcune tra le voci più interessanti della narrativa italiana contemporanea. Un certo voyerismo
ci accompagna nella lettura delle vite di questi autori e continuamente ci chiediamo: ma è successo davvero? Ma davvero
Francesco Piccolo quella tizia neanche l’ha baciata? E così ci

Sidis c’è tutta la potenza del paradosso dell’esistenza umana che
in questo libro Morten Brask racconta. La perfezione di una mente
troppo alta, troppo veloce, troppo
abile, troppo bella, troppo geniale, troppo unica, troppo generosa,
troppo feconda. Troppo. Perché
financo le migliori espressioni del
genere umano sono troppo per la

William Sidis aveva una mente brillante, di una brillantezza imparagonabile a quella dei suoi

Inadequacy without any pretentiousness – «Life, after all, is just a
slalom between foolish moments» – surely a collection that has the
merit of making us listen to some of the most interesting voices of
contemporary Italian fiction. A certain voyeurism accompanies us in
reading about the lives of these authors leaving us continually asking: did it really happen? For real Francesco Piccolo didn’t even kiss
that girl? And so we find ourself in search of gossip not much differently from our beachtowel neighbor that reads that kind of magazines from which we, readers of Strega awards, keep at a distance.
In the adjective “perfect” chosen to describe the life of William Sidis there is all the power of the paradox of human existence which Morten Brask tells in this book. The perfection of a
mind too high, too fast, too able, too beautiful, too clever, too
unique, too generous, too fruitful. Too much. Because the best
expressions from the human race are too much for the small,
poor, often petty, earthly existence.
William Sidis had a brilliant mind, of an incomparable brilliance
to that of his fellow men – fellow? – and to witness this an IQ
off the charts. Born in the late nineteenth century, in America,
died in '44 in solitude, as the world left him out because he was
too different, even if better. This book tells the life of a special
man and the inability of a society to welcome those who stand
out, for a well-established form of alienating and murdering
conformism.

raggiunge l’età adulta e lascia i parenti
per frequentare il college. La particolarità della pellicola deriva però non tanto dalla trama in sé, ma dalla scelta del
regista di diluire lavorazione e riprese
in un periodo lungo quanto la trama
del film: 12 anni. Richard Linklater ha
infatti dato il primo ciak di Boyhood
nel 2002, radunando la stessa troupe e
il cast completo ogni anno per 12 anni
e girando ogni volta delle brevi, ma significative, scene. Il risultato è un racconto quanto mai autentico, come autentica è la crescita personale dei personaggi e la trasformazione fisica degli
attori nella dozzina di anni in cui sono stati ripresi. Anche la società americana viene filtrata e mostrata attraverso i cambiamenti politici e sociali avvenuti in poco più di un decennio.
Definito period movie, esperimento cinematografico o progetto seriale, il film è valso a
Linklater l’Orso d’Argento per
la migliore regia.

of this movie film, however,
does not come from the plot
itself, but from the director’s
choice of diluting the working and filming over a period
as long as the plot of the film:

society is filtered and shown through the social and

decade. Defined as a period movie, cinema experiment or series project, the film earned Linklater the
Silver Bear for best director.

Less is more. Quando arrivi al quinto studio album la tua musica
parla da sé: questo sembra voler suggerire il trinomio minimal
copertina-tracklist-titolo dell’ultima fatica dei signori di Leicester.
48:13 – la durata dell’album – è tutto quello che i Kasabian sono
stati e vogliono essere, spingendosi sapientemente al limite
delle loro esplorazioni musicali. Il chitarrista e songwriter Sergio
Pizzorno abbraccia completamente la vena psichedelica che
ha sempre pulsato nel sound del gruppo inglese: l’elettronica
è autorevole ma mai abusata, e pure con sobrietà, pezzi caleidoscopici come Explodes, Glass e Treat imprimono una spinta
fortemente onirica. L’esplosiva Bumblebee sembra scritta appositamente per infiammare i migliori festival d’oltremanica, mentre
il singolo Eez-eh è il conosciuto caos controllato che i Kasabian
sanno farci apprezzare.
Per il suo secondo album Elizabeth Woolridge Grant alias Lana
Del Rey si affida alla mano di Dan Auerbach, frontman dei Black
Keys alla sua prima come produttore. Pur lasciando invariato il
suo sound fumoso e suadente, sofferto e provocatore, l’influenza di Auerbach la porta ad abbandonare le tentazioni hip-hop a
favore di un tocco rock back to the basics. Il suono è più brillante
e gli arpeggi che risuonano sullo sfondo, come nella struggente
ballad Sad Girl, contrastano con delicatezza al languore di Elizabeth. I testi crudi e diretti di Pretty When You Cry e Fucked My
Way Up to the Top sono la giusta cornice della più lenta, velenosa e aspramente sincera Money Power Glory. Nel pezzo di chiusura The Other Woman la voce tremante di Lana Del Rey canta

the minimal covertracklist-title trinomial seems to suggest, the last effort by the lords of Leicester. 48:13 – the length of
the album – is all that Kasabian have been and want to be, expertly
pushing the limits of their musical explorations. The guitarist and
songwriter Sergio Pizzorno fully embraces the psychedelic mood
that has always pulsed through the sound of the English group:
electro is authoritative but never abused, and even with sobriety,
kaleidoscopic pieces such as Explodes, Glass and Treat strongly imprint a dreamy feel. The explosive Bumblebee seems written specifically to light up the best festivals of the country, while the single
Eez-eh is the well known controlled chaos that Kasabian know how
to make us appreciate.

The Black Keys, with his first
work as a producer. While leaving her smoky and persuasive,
felt and provocating sound untouched, Auerbach’s influence
skillfully brings her to abandon the temptations of hip-hop in favor
of a touch of back to the basic rock. The sound is clever and the
arpeggios that echo in the background, like in the romantic ballad
Sad Girl, contrast with the delicate languor of Elizabeth. The raw
and direct lyrics of Pretty When You Cry and Fucked Up My Way
to the Top are the right frame for the slower, more poisonous and
harshly sincere Money Power Glory. In the closing track The Other
Woman Lana Del Rey’s trembling voice sings bluntly the moral of
the album: «The other woman will never have to keep his love and
will spend her life alone».

Sheeran, che per questo secondo lavoro ha ben pensato di affidarsi alla collaborazione di artisti del calibro di Rick Rubin, Gary
Lightbody e Pharrell Williams. Proprio dalla collaborazione con

Per proteggervi contro la nuova minaccia derivante dagli esplosivi liquidi, l’Unione Europea ha adottato nuove regole di sicurezza che limitano le quantità di liquidi che possono essere
introdotti nelle aree sterili. Tali regole si applicano nei confronti
tutti i passeggeri in partenza dagli aeroporti dell’Unione Europea verso qualsiasi destinazione.
Ciò significa che ai controlli di sicurezza, il passeggero e il relativo
bagaglio a mano devono essere controllati per verificare la presenza di liquidi.
Comunque, le nuove regole non limitano la quantità di liquidi che possono essere
acquistati presso gli esercizi commerciali situati oltre il punto di controllo del titolo di viaggio od a bordo di un aeromobile di compagnia appartenente all’Unione
Europea.
Le nuove regole si applicano a partire da lunedì 6 novembre 2006, in tutti gli aeroporti dell’Unione Europea, in Norvegia, Islanda e Svizzera a meno di eventuali

To protect you against the new threat of liquid explosives, the European Union (EU)
introduced new security rules to limit the amount of liquids that you can take through
security checkpoints. They apply to all passengers departing from EU airports to all
destinations.
This means that, at security checkpoints, you and your hand luggage must be inspected for liquids screening in addition to other prohibited articles. However, the
new rules do not limit the liquids that you can buy at shops located beyond the
checkpoints.
The new rules are in force as to Monday 6th November 2006 at all airports in the EU

Jet Lag
Il vostro “orologio biologico” può a volte non gradire i cambi di fuso
legati al viaggio aereo: senso di affaticamento, difficoltà a prendere
sonno e riduzione dell’appetito sono tra i sintomi più comuni. Per minimizzare l’impatto di tale fenomeno, si consiglia di dormire bene la

Sometimes you “biological clock” may not welcome the time changes involved
in air travel and it finds ways of letting you know about this. Some of the most
common symptoms are a sense of weariness, difficulty in falling asleep at night
and appetite loss. To minimize jet lag effects, make sure you get a good night
sleep before leaving and, if you plan to stay abroad less than two days, keep you
biological clock set on your home time (i.e. keep your regular eating and sleeping
habits). In the event of a longer trip, it is advisable to get used to local time as
soon as possible and to conduct a regular and healthy life. Remember that getting over jet lag is generally quicker when travelling westwards than eastwards.

To help you feel better when you fly with us, just follow these
tips and suggestions designed to enhance your well being on
board
Stare a lungo seduti in una stessa posizione può farvi sentire a
disagio sull’aereo. Sgranchitevi gambe e braccia ogni due ore
circa. Alzatevi di tanto in tanto e camminate su e giù per il corridoio oppure fate i semplici esercizi* di stretching illustrati per
prevenire problemi circolatori.
Prolonged sitting in a fixed position can make you feel uncomfortable in the plane. Every few hours, stretch your arms and legs
or carry out some easy exercises* suggested below.
Consumate pasti leggeri, mangiate con moderazione e limitare
bevande gassate, tè e caffè.
Eat a light meal and moderate you intake of fizzy drinks, tea and
coffee.
Bevete molta acqua naturale, meglio se in piccole quantità e
spesso.
Drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated.
Moderate il consumo di bevande alcoliche, poiché queste sono
assorbite più facilmente dal corpo ad alta quota a causa della
bassa pressione dell’aria all’interno della cabina.
Moderate your intake of alcohol.
In caso di permanenza prolungata a bordo è consigliato sostituire le lenti a contatto con degli occhiali per evitare irritazioni
oculari. Togliete sempre le lenti a contatto prima di dormire.
In case of a long flight it is recommended to wear eyeglasses
rather than contact lenses. Remove contact lenses before sleeping.
*Vi suggeriamo di sospendere immediatamente questi esercizi
se causano dolore o disagio.
*We suggest you stop doing these exercise immediately should
you feel pain or discomfort.

Iniziate gli esercizi stando seduti in modo comodo ed eretto.
Start the exercise by sitting in comfortably in your seat in an upright position.

Poggiate entrambi i piedi sul pavimento. Flettete i piedi puntando i talloni in su e poi in giù. Ripetete per cinque volte.
Rest both feet on the floor. Flex both feet with toes pointing
upward, then point your toes downward Perform this exercise
five times.

Sollevate dolcemente il ginocchio verso il busto per alcuni secondi, poi lasciatelo andare, poggiando nuovamente il piede
sul pavimento. Fate lo stesso con l’altra gamba. Ripetete cinque
volte per gamba.
Raise you knee gently towards the chest for a few seconds and
then release, placing your feet back on the floor. Continue with
the other leg. Repeat five times for each leg.

Mettete le mani sotto una coscia e sollevatele dolcemente verso il busto. Ruotate la caviglia in modo circolare per 5 secondi.
Ripetete con l’altra gamba. Ripetete questo esercizio cinque
volte per gamba.
Place your hands under one thigh, and gently lift toward your
chest. Rotate your ankle in a circular motion for 5 seconds. Repeat with the other leg. Perform this exercise five times with
both legs.
