Working activity:
July 2006 – to present. Researcher of the IMEM-CNR Institute (Institute of Materials for Electronics and
Magnetism of the Italian National Research Council). In November 2010 I joined the Laboratory of
Molecular Nanotechnologies of the Physics Department of the Parma University, where I work in the
framework of a collaboration between the University and the IMEM-CNR Institute. Here I have widened my
research interests to include the dynamics and the rheology of colloids, nanoparticles and polymers in
confined geometry and the study of the mechanisms of resistive switching in organic and inorganic
memristor (memory-resistor) devices.
July 2006 – October 2010. Visiting Scientist at the inelastic X-ray scattering beamline ID16 at the European
Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France. During this four years period I worked full time
on the ID16 beamline, carrying on my research activity and contributing to the beamline development, in
collaboration with Prof. Giulio Monaco and Prof. Francesco Sette. I gave substantial contributions to the
improvement of the energy resolution of the spectrometer dedicated to high energy resolution experiments
( ⁄
), for the investigation of vibrational modes in glasses and liquids. I performed also
experiments using X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopies to determine the electronic structure of
materials. I contributed to the development and installation of a nine crystal analyser chamber for very high
frequency energy resolution experiments and to the design and implementation of a double pass spectrometer
for high contrast inelastic X-ray scattering experiments. A part of the work was devoted to the activity of
beamline commissioning and to the support to the user community as a local contact. The international
environment of the ESRF allowed me to establish collaborations that persist up to now and are giving fruitful
results.
December 2005 – June 2006. Collaboration with the University of Trento in the group of Prof. Aldo
Fontana. During this period I performed Brillouin light scattering experiments with ultraviolet radiation, both
in the laboratory and at the IUVS beamline at the Italian Synchrotron “Elettra”. A part of the activity was
devoted to the data analysis and interpretation, using specifically developed tools for data treatment (under
the Matlab environment).
Education:
November 2002 to December 2005. I carried out my PhD thesis work in Physics at the Physics Department,
Trento University, Italy. Thesis title: “Damping of Vibrational Excitations in Structural Glasses: a Brillouin
Scattering and Numerical Simulation Study”. Mention: Excellent. Advisor: Prof. Gabriele Viliani. A part of
the PhD project has been devoted to sample preparation and characterization, to light, X-ray and neutron
scattering experiments in the laboratory and at large scale facilities and to data analysis. I also dedicated an
important part of the work to numerical simulations. The main result of the PhD was the observation of a
crossover frequency, of about 150 GHz, marking the onset of a regime where the sound attenuation is
1
disorder-dominated, revealing the presence of long-range correlations (length scale of a few tens of
nanometres) in the elastic properties of glasses. The experiments were conducted on two prototypical
glasses, v-SiO2 and v-GeO2. By means of numerical simulations I investigated a model system with
correlated random springs on a lattice. The proposed model allowed me to give a sound interpretation of the
experimental observations. The results of the thesis work have been published in seven papers appeared in
peer reviewed international journals, including one in the Physical Review Letters (this paper has been cited
54 times (WoS 06/2014)) and one in the Europhysics Letters.
July 2002. Laurea cum laude in Physics, Parma University, Italy. Advisor: Prof. Davide Cassi. Thesis title:
“Localization of Waves and Particles on Discrete Inhomogeneous Structures”. In this work I have presented
an innovative analytical method, based on the study of the motion of a random walker, that allows one to
determine the density of states of a general local Hamiltonian on a graph. The results have been published in
two peer reviewed papers appeared in the Physical Review E and the proceedings of an international school.
September 2000 to September 2001. One year at the University of Geneva. Erasmus exchange project.
July 1997. Diploma di maturità scientifica, 60/60, Liceo Scientifico G. Ulivi, Parma.
