MUSIC AROUND THE WORLD’S ANIMALS FISH and «AQUARIUM» (CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS) Content and Language Integrated Learning «Cittadini del mondo», I. C. Vespucci – Firenze, Scuola Capofila della Rete. CLIL PROJECT including science and musical education activities Scuola partecipante: I.C. Guicciardini Firenze Scuola Primaria Don Minzoni – classe IV B Insegnante Loredana De Franco How do fish breathe? Skeletal structure of fish • Fish are vertebrate animals. • There are many kind of fish. Some fish live in salt water, other fish live in fresh water. We will study the ones that live in the sea. They have different sizes, they can be as big as a bus and as little as a finger. http://www.earthtimes.org/conservation/less-big-fish-means-more-little-fish/295/ • They breathe through gills that capture the oxygen present in the water. Fish open their mouth and the water hits the gills. http://universalfacts.blogspot.it/2006/03/how-do-fish-breathe.html Exercise. How do fish breathe? Read and write true (T) or false (F) All fish live in salt water. F All fish are the same size. F Some fish are invertebrate. F Gills capture the placton. F Fish breathe through the nose. F In sea water there is oxygen. T How do they reproduce? • Generally little fish are born from eggs laid in the water. The eggs develop into baby fish without the help of parents. These kinds of fishes are oviper . A few species of fishes take eggs into the body until the baby fish is ready to be born. These kinds of fishes are ovoviviper. • Clownfish live around sea anemones because the sea anemone poison doesn’t affect the clownfish . There are about 30 species of clown fish. The species called Red Sea Anemonefish is the most common clown fish in the Red Sea. It has a reddish-brown and orange base color with two white stripes and an orange tail. Clownfish release their eggs among the sea anemone. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Sea Exercise. How do fish reproduce? Read and choose. What do they eat? Madrepore eaten by a parrotfish • They can eat placton (tiny drifting organisms) and algae or other fishes. • Fishes who eat other fishes have got a large mouth, such as the sea bass. A fish that eats only algae and marine vegetation is the grey mullet. This kind of fish can be found in warm water and also in Nordic water. • Parrotfish have fused teeth able to break down the hard coral. They are found in tropical waters throughout the world. To swim fish use their tail moving it to the left and to the right. • To float without swimming fish have a swim bladder. A swim bladder is an internal gas-filled organ. It can inflate and deflate . • Sharks who live in the North Sea haven’t got a swim bladder so they must always swim. https://en.wikipedia.or g/wiki/North_Sea https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swim_bladder Sharks swim moving all the body, not only fins. To escape predators fish can swim very fast or camouflage themselves. • The porcupine fish, also called blowfish or balloonfish, as a defense mechanism can inflate itself. In this condition its spine becomes prominent. Sometimes the spine can contain a deadly poison. • This fish lives in the Tropical Atlantic Ocean and thanks to these three mechanism defenses has got few predators. • The red scorpion fish is a predator that can camouflage itself waiting for a fish to catch it by surprise, before eating their prey a scorpion fish can use its venom to stun it. It’s a collection of fourteen short pieces where orchestral instruments are used to describe animal actions and animal behavior. AQUARIUM (CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS – Camille Saint-Saëns) This piece in music notation is a piece “legato” that means that musical notes are played or sung without interruption and connected . As you can hear from note to note there isn’t a “silence”. Other types of sound articulations are: portato, staccato, staccatissimo. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Articulation_(music) Each type of articulation has a symbol on the staff. T THE CELESTA The celesta is a musical instrument that belongs to the percussion family (such as drums, timpanis, gong and glockenspiel). Generally it’s considered as a member of the keyboard section in the orchestra and is played by a keyboardist. The sound of the celesta is similar to that of the glockenspiel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XgdKTfy1Pw (Harry Potter theme song on glockenspiel) The sound of the celesta has a much softer and more subtle timbre compared to the glockenspiel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faHXQugcz9A (The Nutcracker's celesta with Kelly Zuercher) One of the best-known musical composition that uses the celesta is Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" from The Nutcracker. DOCUMENTAZIONE Schede di osservazione/diario di bordo sulle DELL’ATTIVITA’ singole unità affrontate in classe. Progetto CLIL Scheda di osservazione/diario di bordo - Prima lezione SCUOLA Don Minzoni (I.C. Guicciardini, Firenze) CLASSE: classe IV B INSEGNANTE: Loredana De Franco PROGETTO CLIL: «Cittadini del mondo», “Rete Saperi” TITOLO DEL MODULO: “Music around the world’s animals” CONTENUTO DELLA LEZIONE: Introduzione dell’attività CLIL. DISCIPLINA COINVOLTA: scienze. DURATA: durata 2 ore e 30 minuti. LINGUA USATA Introduzione: italiano e inglese; Svolgimento dell’attività: inglese. DISCIPLINA COINVOLTA: scienze. DURATA: durata tre ore. LINGUA USATA inglese.
