Researchinterest&RecentProjects
More than 30 years of experience in the domain of optical Remote Sensing, from visible to thermal IR, starting from the
partecipation to HCMM Explorer-A (NASA Investigation HCM-050) and Tellus Project JRC-EC (NASA investigation
HCM-025) in the years 1977-1982 and moving from qualitative approaches towards quantitative methods.
His competences cover both acquisition of radiometric measurements, trhough the radiometric calibration and
atmospheric correction, and processing and automatic interpretation of remotely sensed images.
His research interests are the development of remote sensing methodologies and applications for monitoring natural
resources and their disturbances at different spatial scales from local to regional and continetal with the use of time
series of coarse resolution satellites, as in the case of wildfires in Mediterranean and tropical environments.
In particular it is worthy to mention:
 retrieval of geophysical parameters and the modelling of surface related physical processes,
 automatic land cover mapping (land cover/land cover change) using novel techniques as fuzzy logic and for
accuracy evaluation of satellite derived thematic maps with the introduction of fuzzy error matrix and optimal
Pareto boudary,
 integration of multi-source data for environmental indicators definition and assessment using approximate
reasoning techniques.
He participated at different level of responsability to projects, either within national and international research
programmes. Some of the recent Research Projects:

Scienze Affini) and serves as reviewer for several international scientific journals.
He is member of the Italian Association of Remote Sensing (AIT), the U.K. Remote Sensing & Photogrammetry
Society (RSPSoc) and the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS).
Since 2010 Member of the GOFC/GOLD Fire Implementation Team (GLobal Observation of Forest and Land Cover
Dynamics of GTOS); invitation letter of Dr. Michael Brady (Executive Officer GOFC/GOLD, Edmonton, Alberta,
