With its protected dune system, the coastal Park of Rimigliano offers the chance to go bathing surrounded by nature. The eye runs over the green promontory of Piombino, along the windworn shrubland that lines the beach, and out to the unmistakable blue silhouettes of the islands of the Tuscan archipelago on the horizon. THE COASTAL PARK OF RIMIGLIANO Four natural environments may be observed in the coastal park of Rimigliano, going inland from the sea: 1 A stretch of beach made up of fine light sand, sloping gently towards the sea. The slope continues into the sea, forming a stretch of shallow water for many metres, ideal for bathing; 2 The first dune belt, characterised by pioneer vegetation and others that consolidate the soils (ammophlia and agropiretes), these followed by junipers, with examples of both large-fruited juniper and the rarer Phoenician juniper; 3 A stretch of wetland, the remains of the costal lagoons that lay behind the dunes that were reclaimed many years ago by way of an artificial canal. This tends to overflow from time to time, leaving colonies of common and swamp reeds; 4 A second dune belt, now well-consolidated, covered prevalently by the remaining patches of coastal pinewood made up of domestic and maritime pines, these almost totally replaced today by typical formations of Mediterranean scrub, prevalently holm oak and cork oak, with examples of downy oak that grew under the cover of the pines during their senescent phase. It is not unusual – particularly in the wooded stretches – to come across red squirrels and dormice. Other animals are more elusive, such as wild boar, wild rabbit, porcupine, badger and fox. Amongst the branches of the trees, jays and green woodpeckers can be seen. The foundation of the park of Rimigliano was the first fruit of an interesting experience in coordinated planning involving various councils, promoted from the 60’s onwards by the Province of Livorno, one that the councils present in the Val di Cornia made their own. Since 1975, in fact, natural parks have taken on great importance, being seen as areas in harmony with their surroundings, to be exploited within the limits imposed by their characteristics and by the importance of the pre-existing historic, archaeological and natural features that gave rise to them. In such a context Rimigliano was destined to become an “equipped territorial park”, safeguarding the environment but also allowing use of the coast and wooded areas to tourism. With an eye to this, the Council of San Vincenzo commissioned a report on the natural environment from the Natural History Museum of the Province of Livorno, and the first services allowing use of the park were brought into being (pathways, signposting, picnic areas, toilets and showers). At the same time, works were carried out for the protection of the park area, building a palisade to prevent automobile access from the via della Principessa to the internal trackways, and windbreaks to protect the dunes and their characteristic plant life. The last twenty years have seen the services on offer increase, thanks to the construction of public conveniences, showers, and areas equipped for picnics, along with the conversion of existing buildings into accommodation facilities and snack bars and restaurants. Access to the coastal park of Rimigliano is exclusively by way of the pedestrian entrances along the via della Principessa. The main entrances are numbered following the direction San Vincenzo to Piombino. There are no bathing establishments (it is a free beach), and in two places there is access to the beach for the disabled, thanks to raised platform catwalks (entrances 4, 8 and 10). Such access also exists for some of the public services present. The beach within the park has been awarded the “Blue Flag” certification. Showers and equipped picnic areas are available in various parts of the park. information panels on the history of the park and the natural features that characterise it may be found along the principal internal pathway. Under the dense coverage of holm oak and pine, along the central pathway of the park, a fitness route has been set up, made up of eighteen places, each with a different exercise to work on different parts of the body. Each has a different level of difficulty, making them suitable for all age groups. There is also a route that is recognised by the Italian Athletics Federation Tutti i percorsi sono ad accesso libero, non soggetti a bigliettazione Access to all pathways is free of charge; there are no tickets.
