To celebrate the beginning of the new millennium, the Municipalities of Sessa and Monteggio have decided to create a new itinerary together, whose main intention is to highlight the vestiges of history and of the natural environment but which also wishes to underscore the important relationship between water and man both in the past and in the present. The path winds its way along the Pevereggia torrent. Nature and history offer traces of both past and present, all to be discovered in this corner of Malcantone. Water is seen from a double perspective as something “rethought out again” and as something “thought about in a new way”, because the knowledge and the awareness of the past and of its relationship to the present allows us to face a future that has already begun in a constructive way. The Pevereggia torrent, which offers us the beauty of its waterfalls in this part of its course, found its final outlet from the Sessa plain into the Tresa River only after the last Ice Age, overcoming an altitude difference of about 100 meters. The irregular flow of its waters varies greatly in the course of the seasons on the basis of the amount of rainfall, offering us a spectacular sight during the spring floods. The first cataract can be enjoyed in safety from the path of the “Acqua Ripensata”, while the ‘Lüera’ fall (the higher fall), may be admired from near the ruins of the Trezzini Mill, being very cautious, since the area is not devoid of dangers. A Plus d’information A More Information Cheminée “Baglioni” The “Baglioni” Chimney En 1855, l’ing. The Baglioni Chimney is the terminal part of the pipe, which started at the Foundry in Val di Tresa and which dispersed what remained of the smoke, which had partially sedimented in the four decantation chambers. It bears the name of Ing. Vinasco Baglioni, who, from 1855 to 1883, directed the exploitation of the Costa di Sessa gold mine and who built a Foundry at the Ressiga di Monteggio, a plant for the processing of material and for the extraction of gold and silver. The sulphur concentrates, obtained from an initial mechanical processing of the raw material, were fired in ovens at 300 degrees, to free them from the arsenic contained, which becomes volatile changing into arsenous anhydrid, a poisonous gas, which is harmful to the environment. The pipe and the chimney had the aim of attenuating these harmful effects. The water from the Pevereggia in the course of the last few centuries has aided man in his hard work, giving movement to several machines for transforming wheat into flour, before the advent of electricity. The Trezzini Mill, which you can still see the remains of, remained active until the end of the Great War, giving its precious contribution to the local economy. An irrigation ditch, dug in the stone, comes down from the torrent just downstream of the first waterfall, to bring the water to the mill needed to turn the great paddled wheel. The last miller (mornée) was Bernardino Trezzini, who with the aid of two mules also dealt with the transportation of the wheat and of the flour. The old Monteggio Cheese Dairy was founded in 1889 because of the need to transform the extra milk, produced by families into dairy products, such as butter, cheese and ricotta. It must be remembered that until the mid 20th century every family kept one or two cows. Under the supervision of the Cantonal Agricultural Society, fortyfour small dairy consortia arose in the whole of Ticino, managed by trained dairy producers. The Old Monteggio Cheese Dairy, located in a fresh and shaded place, exploited the waters of the Pevereggia to cool the milk and let the cream float to the top, while the torrent’s current moved the barrel shaped churn to produce butter, by means of a paddled wheel. The waste product, milk serum (lazzéron) was recovered and used for the breeding of pigs. The Cheese dairy’s activity ended in 1920, when everything was centralised in the new Luganese Cheese Dairy Company and ever since then until the early 60ties, it simply acted as a place where milk was collected and then sent to Lugano every evening. www.ti-sentieri.ch Info e numeri per emergenze: Info & emergency numbers: A Lugano Turismo: +41 58 866 66 00 Polizia / Police: 117 Pompieri / Fire Brigade: 118 Ambulance / Ambulance: 144 REGA: 1414 CT Natur pur im Tessin www.camping-tresiana.ch Sessa e Monteggio Sentiero dell’acqua ripensata Legenda 1 L’acqua ripensata 2 Cascate 3 Camino Baglioni 4 Mulino Trezzini 5 La vecchia latteria 6 Le Bolle di Sessa 7 Acquedotto 8 Le Bollette 9 Lavatoio Termine 10 11 12 8 13 7 9 6 10 Sirane 5 11 Il Cassinòtt 12 Piccolo Museo Sessa e Monteggio 14 2 4 3 13 Piazza da “Sóra” 14 Biotopo ai Grappoli 1 Sentiero dell’acqua ripensata Rete escursionistica Le Bolle di Sessa A Maggiori Informazioni A Für weitere Informationen Le Bolle di Sessa Feuchtgebiet «Le Bolle» Questa piccola zona, ben delimitata, è protetta dal piano regolatore comunale. This small, well delimited area is protected by the Municipal master plan. The surfacing of the plain’s ground water creates a remarkably interesting place, naturalistically speaking, since the Pevereggia torrent also flows through it. The biotope is capable of welcoming the transit or the stay of large size animals like roe deer, deer and numerous birds. The habitat is, however, characterized by life forms connected to the water environment like frogs and toads and by their natural predators. Let’s recall the water snake (Natrix Natrix) extremely important to environmental balance. The oaks on the upper edge give way to an alder woods and a marshy vegetation characterized by sedge fields. A well marked itinerary makes things easy for the visitor. The many hamlets of Monteggio scattered all the way to the top of the hill all depended on just a few wells supplied by periodic springs. At the beginning of the 20th Century, the hamlets of the “Bassa” (of the lower area) built an aqueduct which got its water from the phreatic groundwater of the Sessa plain. At the same time, even Termine, exploiting a natural spring on the Scerée hill, was able to equip itself with a small aqueduct. For the other hamlets the solution had been known for some time and was represented once again by the phreatic groundwater under the Sessa plain. To exploit the groundwater it has been necessary to wait until the financial needs have been available. In 1950, water was pumped into reservoirs at the top of the hill and thanks to an 8 km long waterpipe all the hamlets were connected. The “Bollette” is a small wetland environment of remarkable naturalistic interest. It is an ecological niche and a habitat for many different animal species. This is a place of passage, stay and also a watering place for several large mammals like deer, roe deer, and wild boars but also for smaller ones like hedgehogs, squirrels and mice. Water and the presence of dead wood foster the metamorphosis of insects and of other tiny living organisms. The presence of this hidden life may be discovered by observing the holes dug by the woodpecker in dead wood. The larva of the stag beetle changes into one of our most spectacular coleopters after having spent from four to six years in old logs. The small “Termine” consortium aqueduct, built at the beginning of the 20th century, had the fountain and the washtub as its terminal. Running water inside homes was unthinkable at the time, but the washtub already represented a remarkable step forward. The spring water was of excellent quality, the fountain created a drinking place for the cows and the roofed washtub made the hard work of the washerwomen easier. And that’s how it became the town’s point of reference, with its “Bröri” square and the chapel of Saint Rita, where women could gossip, exchange news, advice, rumours and maybe alleviate the hard work with some songs. Now the washtub stands in silence, but thanks to its recent restoration it will be there still for many years as a reminder of times gone by. The landscape which we can admire here reminds us of the ice ages that have modelled the mountains, through several different phases in very remote times. The ice strips during the last ice age, have conditioned the water courses and created the plain with the debris left in place, once they definitely withdrew about 15’000 years ago. The constant stagnation of water and marshy vegetation on the plain gave rise to a vast peat-bog in an environment, which for thousands of years, was swampy and unhealthy. The exploitation of peat only started in 1856. A plant at Cassinone produced charcoal and other derivatives on site. In1878, ing. Pasquale Lucchini, with several actions, reclaimed the land. Various other improvements would later make it possible to develop the land for farming. The water, which is still present today underground, supplies a rich aquifer, which is indispensable to our aqueducts. A dendrochronological study confirms that the construction dates back to 1831, a date that is also engraved on the architrave of a window. The building materials employed are local in origin. Stone walls delimited the rooms of a house, the cattle-sheds, haylofts and a straw deposit. The choice of the location was made on account of the stability of the rock on which the house was built and its proximity to water. A small stream runs along its side and a spring with drinking water is on the east side. Several families used to live at the Cassinòtt but then because of the depopulation of the farming population and to the subdivision of the property due to inheritances, the place was abandoned for many years. The building’s refurbishment works and of its surroundings started in 2006.
