They aren’t the latest duets proposed by the music industry, nor the iPod playlist of a music lover: what pools these artists and discs of every era, genre, nation and quality together are two lads from Genoa who have launched ReVinyl, a series of design objects obtained from old vinyl records. Wall pockets, ashtrays, pencil holders, lamps and containers of every type: Luca Battuello and Filippo Repetto create their design pieces by slightly melting the vinyl that, once softened by the heat, can then be manipulated and remodelled into various forms, folding the L Matteo Macor I due designer genovesi che hanno lanciato ReVinyl, tra le loro creazioni The two Genoese desigers who have launched ReVinyl with their creations 61 62 blue news piastra nera attorno all’etichetta centrale. In fact they deform the grooves that the needle of the record player would follow to reproduce the tracks. “But we aren’t showing contempt for this medium or for the songs or artists, in reality – explain the two designers, met in their house/laboratory among the creuze of the Priaruggia quarter, in the eastern side of the city – We were not only inspired by vintage tastes and the search for a new design. The idea came about also from our love of music and an object that is so dear to us like vinyl. In this way, in a certain sense, we “save” discs that are warped, forgotten or ruined by dust from the rubbish. And we wouldn’t permit ourselves to melt a functional or particularly beautiful disc. It’s done for recycling, something that also follows in the footsteps of the European tendency of recent years: in fact, according to research by experts, the vinyl market from 2007 to today has grown 25%, even with the loss in compact disc sales following the advent of online music. “Our idea, after all, is however something else – clarify the two – If the LP as a collector’s item has never gone out of fashion, and perhaps the warm sound of the record player is being rediscovered along with the beauty of the covers of long playing, with ReVinyl we wanted instead to reinvent the disc: bring it back into daily life with a new function and a different form, but at the same time elegant with respect to the characteristic black shiny circle”. Whatever will be the tendency and inspiration down the road for this new creation, the results are on the shelves of Formica, the eco-store opened in Genoa by one of the two creators of the “melted disc” which for now is the only sales point of ReVinyl: there are vinyls worked in all colours, with only two formats (33 rpm and 45 rpm), but with a great variety of models. “And then there is the added value of the label. Some people look for the most colourful, the oldest, their favourite musician or the most famous single. Do you want to put your cigarette out inside the 45 of Blowin’ in the wind, or put the crisps to offer your guests in the original disc of Let it Be?”. b
