Department of Commerce e della U.S. State Importazioni da Mondo (valori in euro) Prodotti: materiali lapidei Euro % Quota di mercato 2013 2014 2015 2013 2014 2015 %Δ 15/14 All States 1.886.333.343 1.983.125.020 2.460.581.817 100.00 100.00 100.00 24.08 California 364.614.639 358.053.030 445.045.909 19.33 18.05 18.09 24.30 Texas 254.688.937 289.545.852 369.091.098 13.50 14.60 15.00 27.47 Florida 213.038.855 233.116.698 293.935.033 11.29 11.76 11.95 26.09 New Jersey 150.476.095 178.863.118 223.749.623 7.98 9.02 9.09 25.10 Georgia 113.958.894 121.234.010 154.773.260 6.04 6.11 6.29 27.66 New York 125.184.321 115.843.852 126.152.422 6.64 5.84 5.13 8.90 Illinois 69.231.238 64.305.175 81.216.980 3.67 3.24 3.30 26.30 Virginia 62.648.636 66.514.731 73.425.736 3.32 3.35 2.98 10.39 Massachusetts 41.970.530 47.788.895 55.286.643 2.22 2.41 2.25 15.69 North Carolina 36.699.859 37.514.798 52.809.277 1.95 1.89 2.15 40.77 State Fonte: Global Trade Atlas Tavola 15 Lapidei: quota di mercato italiana sul mercato USA (tot import dall'Italia/tot import*100) 2013 2014 2015 USA: All states 18% 18% 18% California 17% 20% 21% Texas 13% 11% 11% Florida 14% 15% 16% New Jersey 28% 25% 26% Georgia 8% 7% 8% New York 34% 42% 40% Fonte: Global Trade Atlas, Rielaborazione IMM. 34 35 STONE SECTOR 2016 Bilancio e prospettive del commercio internazionale dei prodotti lapidei Annual Report and Outlook for the International Stone Sector Manuela Gussoni ENGLISH VERSION 36 Summary Macroeconomic overview ......................................................................................................................................38 The construction market ........................................................................................................................................41 The international stone market..............................................................................................................................44 The international demand for natural stone ..........................................................................................................47 The European stone sector.....................................................................................................................................48 International demand for natural stone – High-growth markets 2015 .................................................................51 The Italian stone industry and international trade ................................................................................................53 Conclusions .............................................................................................................................................................65 37 Macroeconomic overview In 2015, the global economy growth rate remained low and was estimated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at 3.1% (in 2014, 3.4% growth was recorded). The modest growth reflects, for the fifth consecutive year, the slowdown in emerging and developing countries that continue to represent over 70% of global growth. 22 In particular, Brazil and China showed great difficulties during the year while advanced economies, on the other hand, showed a modest recovery. It was mostly the collapse in raw material prices and heavy debt that weighed heavily on the emerging countries. The IMF estimates that from 2004 to 2014 the debt of companies in these countries increased from 4,000 to 18,000 billion dollars. Overall, the growth of these countries is falling, settling in 2015 on average at around 4%. Among the BRIC countries, only India continues to boast over 7% growth and it has launched an effective process of modernisation of the country. The main objective of the government programme “Make in India 23” launched in September 2014 is to promote the entry of foreign capital, thereby dictating a substantial turnaround compared to the past, and encourage foreign multinationals and domestic companies to produce in the country by creating a workforce and knowledge transfer. Through this programme, the Indian government aims to develop the local manufacturing sector, increasing its percentage of the GDP from 16% to 25% and climbing the ranking of the easiest countries for doing business by 50 positions over the next two years. The trend of development is also interesting in the ASEAN countries. These are ten countries which together represent the world's seventh largest economy in terms of gross domestic product (40% of which is however to be attributed to Indonesia alone), and the third largest in terms of imports. In particular, SACE identifies, among these countries, the Philippines and Myanmar as two frontiers of particular interest 24. The first is a country with a population of 99 million, a dynamic domestic demand, public finances in order and a constant acceleration of the GDP (+6.1% in 2014). Myanmar is a country with a population of 52 million people, good availability of natural resources and a strategic geographical position between India, China and Thailand. Finally, another country worthy of note is Vietnam, which, following the agreement of free trade signed in August 2015 with the EU, aims to eliminate 99% of existing duties. This agreement will open up a market of 90 million people to European companies. China, on the other hand, is going through a transition period, a period in which the unrestrained growth, which led it to be the second largest economy after the US, seems to be slowing down (GDP +6.5% in 2015). The main signs of imbalance are due to a development model based too much on IMF (2016) World Economic Output Update. http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/weo/2016/update/01/ Cf: http://www.makeinindia.com/home 24 SACE (2016) “Frontiers ASIA” (http://www.sace.it/docs/default-source/ufficio-studi/pubblicazioni/frontiers__asia.pdf?sfvrsn=12) 22 23 38 public investment, credit growth (and therefore private debt 25) and development of the property market. The Chinese government's current strategy is instead aimed at stimulating domestic consumption. An increase in domestic consumption and a consequent hypothetical 10% reduction in Chinese imports in 2016 and 2017 would lead to an average loss for all other countries exporting to the Chinese market of 1.2% of their GDP in 2016 and 2% in 2017 26. Obviously, these percentages will vary according to the importance that the Chinese partner has as regards the exports of each country. For example, countries that export commodities and particularly metal goods will be among the most affected by any reduction in Chinese imports since China is the largest importer of metals in the world. Russia, a major market for the natural stone industry, is compensating the effects of the collapse of oil prices, EU sanctions and the repercussions of tensions with Ukraine through the devaluation of the rouble and a sharp contraction of the economy. The price of oil has fallen steadily since mid-2014 and is continuing to fall. This is due, on the one hand, to the slowdown of the Chinese economy and the resulting decline in demand for crude oil from the second world economy and, on the other, to a very strong increase in supply. The increase in the supply of crude oil is to be attributed to the return of Iran on the market but, above all, to the quantities placed on the market by OPEC. The latter, under the influence of Saudi Arabia, the leading world producer, does not want to reduce the supply and this is also to weaken other producing countries such as the US. For the US, in fact, production remains economically advantageous only if the barrel keeps a sufficiently high price (estimated at around $50 a barrel) to compensate the cost of the mining technologies used, which are relatively more expensive compared to those used in the Arab world. In this context, Russia, for which oil and gas still account for 70% of its export income, loses about $2 billion in revenue for every dollar of reduction in the price of oil 27. It is, however, important to emphasise that the collapse in oil prices, which certainly has devastating effects on producing countries, brings disadvantages to the advanced economies too. The net importers of crude, which may benefit on one hand from the greater purchasing power of households and the resulting increase in consumption, on the other are likely to see this benefit partially removed by the decrease in exports to the producing countries. It is estimated that globally the value of exports in dollars to oil-producing countries dropped in 2015 by 23% ($290 billion) compared to 2013 28. In Italy, this led to a fall of 14 billion in exports to the producer countries in 2015 compared to 2013, in particular due to the drop in sales of Made in Italy products to Russia, with weak signals in other important markets such as Venezuela, Algeria, Bahrain and Qatar too. This is not the case in the US, for which Italy ranks tenth among supplier countries. In 2015, there was a sharp increase in Italian exports (+24,5%29) to this market, favoured by the strengthening of the dollar against the euro by approximately 10% over the year30. However, the growth of the United States 25 Fitch estimates that in September 2015 the overall Chinese debt (primarily private) reached 196% of the GDP. Kireyev A. and A. Economic recovery continued in the Euro area thanks to the contribution of private consumption to the GDP, despite a slowdown in exports. Private consumption was encouraged by the ECB's expansionary monetary policy, the reduction in oil prices, which increases the disposable income of households and firms, and increased employment. However, the Quantitative Easing, which began in March 2015, has produced good results, but for the moment it is far off the goal of bringing inflation back down near to 2%. For a few statistics, in 2015, the GDP in the Euro area (EA19) grew by 1.6%, while it grew by 0.9% in 2014 31. The largest increases in gross domestic product in the fourth quarter of 2015 occurred in Sweden, Estonia, Romania and Poland. A decline in GDP was instead recorded in Croatia and Latvia. In Italy, the recovery continued at a moderate pace thanks to the recovery of manufacturing activity and a consolidation of the recovery in the construction industry. The outlook for foreign demand, however, felt the effects of the uncertainty as regards the performance of world trade. The expectation of a drop in sales in markets outside the EU could impact on companies’ investment plans. Significant improvements in the labour market occurred with a moderate increase in employment, despite a still very high unemployment rate, especially among young people. The gradual recovery of credit continued, favoured by the contribution of the monetary policy measures. Lending to manufacturing firms grew at rates above 3 percent while lending to the construction industry and smaller companies was still falling. 32 31 32 Source: Eurostat Source: Bank of Italy “Bollettino Economico n. 2 – 2016”(Economic Bulletin) 40 The construction market In 2015, the world construction market reached a value of 7 trillion Euro and recorded an estimated growth of 2.6% compared to 2014. A development, therefore, slightly less than that of the world economy. For 2016, however, the construction market is expected to record a 3.6% growth rate33. The highest rate of growth in investment in the construction industry in 2015 was found in the countries of the Persian Gulf. These countries showed a growth in value of 4.4% 34 compared to the previous year, for a value of 229 billion euro. The construction industry in this area, in fact, was only partially affected by the drop in oil prices thanks to financial reserves accumulated during the oil boom that made it possible to continue investment in the infrastructure and residential sectors. The following areas follow on an equal footing: Oceania, the Far and Middle East and Africa. Overall, these areas represent a value of investments, for 2015, of approximately 3,400 billion euro that recorded a growth of 4% compared to 2014. The North American area recorded growth of 3.6% for a value of 1,300 billion, equal to that of Western Europe, where growth was much more limited though (+0.7%). In the North American area, the best performance was shown by the United States and Mexico where it is believed that growth may continue even into 2016. In particular, in the US, investments in the industry should grow at a rate higher than 5%. Finally, the remaining 730 billion represent the value of investments in Latin America (359 billion) and Eastern Europe (370 billion). Both areas, however, are in decline, respectively by 3.3% and 2.1% 35. Brazil is facing a severe recession with a contraction of its GDP of 3.8%. This recession should continue even in 2016, involving the Venezuelan and Argentinian economies too. Good development prospects, on the other hand, for Colombia, Chile and Peru. The trend of the construction industry in Eastern Europe, however, was negatively affected by the Russian economy that recorded a 3.7% decline in GDP and a 9% decrease in the value of the construction industry. Good, instead, are the development prospects for Poland that recorded a 3.5% growth in GDP in 2015 and will see an increase in investments in the construction industry higher than 7%. According to Eurostat data, in 2015, production in the European construction industry (28 countries) was 5 percentage points lower than in 2010 and only Germany and the United Kingdom showed growth higher than the EU average (see Table 22). However, the United Kingdom is also slowing down with the residential sector, which in 2015 recorded the worst growth performance since 2013. The prospects for the German construction industry, however, are good and this is also due to the increase in demand for housing owing to the incoming flow of migrants from areas of crisis. Source: Realtà Mapei Source: Realtà Mapei with Prometeia data 35 Source: Realtà Mapei with Prometeia data 33 34 41 The decline in production in the French construction industry was greater and it is believed that it will continue in 2016 because of the poor performance of the housing sector. In Spain, however, for two years now, there has been a positive turnaround. In the Italian construction industry, ANCE still estimates a decline in investment at the end of 2015 of 1.3% in real terms, after significant drops in previous years (-5.2% in 2014 and -7% in 2013) 36, and production in the Italian construction industry in 2015 is 32 percentage points lower than in 2010 (see Table 22). Nevertheless, the confidence in the Italian construction industry still seems to show a clear improvement throughout the year 2015 (see Figure 9), leading to the prospect of a potential recovery. Seasonally adjusted data (index 2010=100) 36 ANCE(2015) (Italian Construction Industry Observatory), December 2015 42 According to CRESME, investment growth for 2016 is expected to exceed 1% and in 2017 and a market development is expected higher than 2%. In these years of crisis, in addition to being downsized, the Italian construction industry has also moved its centre of gravity towards renovation, which today represents 70% of the overall market 37. This has happened thanks to tax deductions and a series of incentives put in place. However, such policies that seem to have worked very well in the North of the country, do not seem to have produced significant effects in the South. Investments in new constructions account for an increasingly lower percentage of Italian constructions, declining from 44% in 2007 to 26% today. The CRESME construction market annual report anyway emphasises the fact that a new cycle is starting for the construction market tied to new products and innovative and eco-friendly services. OISE (2016) “Innovazione e sostenibilità nel settore edilizio” (Innovation and sustainability in the construction industry) 37 43 The international stone market In 2015, the international market of stone products generated a trade flow of 25.7 billion euro, recording an increase of 12.4% compared to 2014 (see Table 23). The quantities traded, however, fell by almost 10% compared to 2014, to almost 78 million tons in 2015. The average unit value of natural stone products is therefore rising. It stood at 330 euro per ton exported in 2015, showing an increase of 24.4% on the previous year. This is thanks to exports of high quality finished products and a particularly favourable situation for natural stone, especially marble, which is a fashionable material both in the construction industry for floors and walls and in design and interiors for kitchen countertops, tables and particularly innovative furnishing accessories in original shapes. Analysing the market shares in Table 24, the country that has benefited most from this golden moment for natural stone, with global exports rising from 12.8 billion euro to 15 billion in 2015, is China. China’s market share rose from 35.7% in 2014 to 42.4% in 2015, strongly confirming its leading position on the international natural stone market. China, in 2015, exported 10.7 million tons of stone materials for a total value of nearly 6.4 billion euro, recording a decrease in quantity of 8% compared to 2014, yet with a growth in value of 38%. The average unit value of Chinese products exported rose by 50%, reaching almost 600 euro per ton. This is mostly due to the increase in the US demand. The USA have become the second market for China after South Korea (see 25) and, in 2015, China exported natural stone, especially finished products, to the US for a total value of 712 million euro (+54%) and an average unit value of around 1,200 euro per ton. The Italian market share fell from 13.5% in 2014 to 12.4% in 2015 while the Turkish share fell from 12.1% in 2014 to 11.2% in 2015, which places Turkey in third place among exporting countries after China and Italy. Both Italy and China have increased, however, their exported value. This means that this increase was lower than the increase of the total world export value. Turkey, in 2015, exported 6.4 million tons of stone products (-10% compared to 2014) with a total value of almost 1.7 billion Euros, an increase of 7.8% on the previous year. Its first market remained China to which it exported materials for a value of almost 652 million euro (+5.8%) but exports to the US also rose. The US is the second market for Turkish products, and in 2015 exports of raw materials and finished products to the US stood at a value of 284 million (+19.7%). 45 FOCUS ON Marble and natural stone: 2016 trends. Boom in finished product exports The total value of marble traded in the world in 2015 was 10.3 billion euro, showing a growth of 9.4% compared to 2014. Finished marble products account for 66% of this total, for a value of 6.8 billion, a 14% increase on 2014. China is the leading exporting country of marble, for the first time overtaking Turkey, although the latter remains the first exporting country if quantity rather than value is considered. The value of marble exported from China in 2015 was 1.7 billion euro, an increase of 30% compared to 2014 and an average unit value of almost 1,000 euro per ton (+29%). These are therefore finished marble exports of a certain value for world demand that is growing strongly. Marble is in fact experiencing a particularly positive moment and has in recent years become a fashionable material not only for floors and walls. Objects of design in marble and furnishings featuring the material were really popular, for example, at the Salone del Mobile 2016 in Milan, where most of the largest companies in the furniture industry used this material as a luxury Made in Italy 38 flag. The use of marble as a precious stone to be used carefully favours the transition of the stone industry into a circular economy whereby even waste, if properly treated, can be reused and enhanced to create an object of particular value. For eco-design and the luxury market, stone is a pliable and particularly attractive material leading to synergies between the marble industry and fashion where a flake can become a jewel and waste from the cut of a slab can be turned into a pair of glasses. The leading importer of finished marble products in 2015 was the United States that purchased 964 million euro worth of this material, increasing its demand by 29% compared to 2014. The main supplier country for the stars and stripes market is Italy. In 2015, the US purchased finished marble products from Italy for a value of 333 million euro. This meant a 29.8% growth in exports for this product category for Italy. The leading stone district for exports of finished products on a national basis was once again the marble district of Carrara, with exports of almost 536 million euro, an increase of 11.4% compared to 2014. In 2015, the furniture macro-system began to grow again after seven years of losses with an increase in turnover of 3.6% compared to 2014, achieved mainly thanks to exports but also to a recovery in the Italian market (Source: Federlegno Arredo - Fla). 38 46 The international demand for natural stone The first market for natural stone is the USA. In 2015, the US overtook China importing stone for a value of 2.4 billion euro, that is an increase of 24.1% on the previous year (see Table 26). The first supply markets for the USA are Brazil, with a 28.5% market share, China with a 19.5% share and Italy with an 18% share (see Focus on: "The US market and the stone Made in Italy” for more details) Table 26 International demand for stone products 2015 first five countries (value in euro) United States China South Korea Japan India 2013 2014 2015 1.886.333.343 2.137.903.194 1.983.125.020 2.192.368.177 2.460.581.817 2.014.251.233 308.429.998 311.707.579 455.154.964 524.964.655 659.451.540 569.628.515 597.408.534 690.469.934 574.710.116 %Var 2015/2014 24,1 -8,1 21,2 -3,8 46,0 Source: Global Trade Atlas, processing by IMM. NB: the table shows the first 5 countries in terms of world import value in 2015. They account for 58% of the world import value in 2015. China, in second place, imported natural stone worth 2 billion euro, recording a decrease of 8%. 99% of China's import value is made up of raw materials, in particular marble blocks and slabs, which are processed locally and, in part, re-exported to the rest of the world. The first supply markets for China are India for granite and Turkey for marble, which hold respectively 28.8% and 28.6% of the Chinese market. The Japanese demand fell once again, from an import value of 597 million in 2014 to 574 million in 2015 (-3.8%). The decline is probably due to a simultaneous slowdown in the construction sector which should, however, reverse its trend in the next few years thanks to investment in residential building, commercial facilities, and projects related to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. In Tokyo, the private sector is developing plans for an international conference centre and business districts, with the aim of planning a city able to attract companies and foreign tourists. Once the Games are over, a part of the Olympic Village - which will be located in the Harumi quarter - will be renovated or built from scratch, and it will come to life again as a large residential area of 6,000 housing units, in two skyscrapers and 22 medium-sized buildings. A residential area will be created in the area of the Bay of Tokyo for 10,000 people with 4,000 housing units, which will see an investment of over 100 billion yen. The apartment blocks are expected to be available from 2018. 39 ICE– newsletter: “Verso le olimpiadi di Tokyo 2020: opportunità di business” (“On the run-up to the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020: business opportunities”), September 2015 39 47 New residential area planned in the Harumi quarter (Tokyo) Source: ICE– newsletter: “Verso le olimpiadi di Tokyo 2020: opportunità di business” (“On the run-up to the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020: business opportunities”), page 3, September 2015 The growth rate of the Korean demand (+21%) and above all the Indian demand (+46%) are worthy of note. In 2015, India imported natural stone for a value of 455 million euro, an increase of 46% compared to 2014. The first supply market is Italy from which India imported mainly raw marble for a value of about 138 million euro (+57% compared to 2014) out of total imports of stone materials of 156 million in 2015. Finally, it is important to emphasise that in 2015, the European Union countries (28 countries) together imported stone materials for a value of 2.4 billion euro, a 5.1% increase compared to 2014. The first supply country for the EU is China for a value of over 700 million Euros, followed by Italy for 473 million. The European stone sector In 2013, the European industry of mining and quarrying had a turnover of 332.8 billion euro. About 8% of this value was generated by the sector of stone, sand and clay extraction, for a value of almost 26 billion (see Table 27). The impact of the sector of ornamental stone and aggregates extraction on the total turnover of the European mining industry has remained stable, compared to 2008, despite the economic crisis that has taken place. In the ornamental stone processing sector, the European turnover in 2013 was 12.4 billion (see Table 28). The leading country was Italy, which produced a third for a value of about 4 billion, half of which thanks to exports. Overall in 2015, EU exports (EU28) of quality stone materials increased by 4% compared to 2014, for a total value of 3.4 billion euro. The first European countries for exported values are Italy and Spain, 48 that respectively accounted for 54% and 16% of foreign sales in the sector, followed by Greece and Portugal (8% and 6%). Thus, the strategic importance of the sector is clear for the whole Mediterranean area, considering the role played by North Africa in both the supply and demand of these materials too. In the 2015 edition, we highlighted Algeria, Indonesia, Colombia and Malaysia as markets that promised the best future business opportunities for the ornamental stone sector. In this edition we confirm Malaysia, whose imports have nearly doubled over the last two years (see Table 29) and, following Malaysia, we highlight Egypt, Mexico, India and Romania (See Figure 10). Figure 10 International demand for ornamental stone: High-growht markets 2015 Var % 2015/2013 35.1 - 97.7 18.0 - 35.1 7.5 - 18.0 0.0 - 7.5 No data Source: Global Trade Atlas, processing by IMM. NB: countries were selected with a value of ornamental stone imports for the year 2015 of not less than 20 million euro. The percentage variation for stone imports is shown for the last two years (2015 on 2013). We have defined high-growth markets (see Figure 10), markets that in the last two years have recorded a growth in imports of more than 35% and that, in 2015, imported ornamental stone for a value of not less than 20 million euro. The markets that fulfil both of these requirements are highlighted in dark blue and listed, with their respective growth rates, in Table 29. Malaysia imported 164,000 tons of stone materials in 2015 for a value of 67.3 million euro, showing therefore a 78.9% increase on 2014. The first supply country is China that, in 2015, met 78% of the overall Malaysian demand, compared to the Italian share of the market that amounted to just 2.4%. 51 Table 29 International demand for ornamental stone High-growth markets 2015 Country Growth % 2015/2013 Malaysia 97,7 Egypt 59,9 Mexico 57,4 India 47,6 Romania 45,7 Ireland 44,2 Thailand 41,2 Australia Algeria 36,3 35,1 Source: Global Trade Atlas, processing by IMM Egypt, in 2015, imported 140,000 tons of stone for a total value of 52.7 million euro, an increase of 34% on the previous year. The Italian stone industry and international trade In 2015, the Italian stone industry exported almost four million tons of natural stone to the rest of the world, recording a value that, for the first time since the advent of the euro, exceeded the two billion mark (see Table 31). The growth in value of 6.3% compared to 2014, together with a decrease in quantity of 5%, shows a substantial increase in the average unit value of the products exported. In 2015, this amounted on average, for quality raw materials and finished products, to 665 euro per ton, recording an increase of 10% compared to 2014. The value of exports of finished granite products is rising too. It rose from 534.6 million in 2014 to 562 million in 2015, recording a +5.1% increase. Overall, the value of Italian exports of finished products amounted to 1,625,739,972 euro, an increase of 7.7% compared to 2014 (see Table 32 on exports of finished products in the various districts). 53 Once again, the leading national stone district for exports of finished products was the Apuo-Versilian district with exports for a value of almost 536 million euro, an increase of 11.4% compared to 2014. If instead raw materials and finished products are considered together, an export value of 734.6 million euro is estimated for the Apuo-Versilian district, an increase of 9.5% compared to 2014. The Veneto district exports also grew, with total finished product exports worth about 523 million euro. Of note is the recovery in exports of travertine that following a period of crisis rose again by 34% compared to 2014, with exports of finished products for a value of 40 million. There is, however, a difference of 10 million euro, probably attributable to a couple of orders from the Russian market. This has allowed producers in the stone industry to have room for manoeuvre on pricing. Those who decided to lock their price lists in euro offered steep discounts in dollars, thereby gaining market share, while those who sold in dollars did not change anything and pushed up the sales in euro 41. However, the trend-based predictions expect a less favourable exchange rate based on the data, hence the 2016 performance is likely to be less bright. It is interesting to note that in the individual states that make up the US Federation, penetration of the Made in Italy brand, taking into consideration all production sectors together, is very uneven and in some areas there is ample room for growth. In the states of New Jersey and New York, however, the Italian market share is decidedly above average, 4.9% and 4.3% respectively. In California and Texas, the Made in Italy brand has a much lower market penetration compared to other countries. The Italian market share is, in fact, 0.9% in California and 1.2% in Texas (see Table 34). According to the data of the US Department of Commerce and the US International Trade Commission, the value of US imports of finished products in natural stone from Italy, calculated in current dollars, amounted to 499 million in 2014 and increased compared to 2014, by a more modest 4.3%. A variation that better reflects the trend on the quantities. 41 55 Table 34 Value of US imports of Made in Italy products – first ten states (millions of dollars, all sectors) US State 2014 value 2015 value % Var. 2015/2014 Italian market share 2015 New Jersey 6.627,6 5.890,3 -11,1 4,9 New York 5.656,1 5.764,9 1,9 4,3 California 3.220,1 3.653,5 13,5 0,9 Michigan 1.358,3 3.436,5 153,0 2,8 Texas 2.926,9 2.917,2 -0,3 1,2 Florida 1.607,7 1.914,2 19,1 2,6 North Carolina 1.869,5 1.851,7 -1,0 3,6 Illinois 1.667,7 1.783,7 7,0 1,5 Georgia 1.504,2 1.569,7 4,4 1,8 Pennsylvania 1.557,8 1.527,4 -2,0 1,9 42.115,2 44.004,9 4,5 2,0 2.316.213,9 2.219.203,2 -4,2 Total US imports from Italy Total US imports Source US: Census Bureau, processing by IMM This observation is even more interesting when you consider that California and Texas are respectively the first and second states for stone material imports with a value that in 2015 in California stood at 445 million euros (+24.3%) and in Texas 369 million (+27.4%) (see table 35). Moreover, Texas is also the first US manufacturer of ornamental stone. Overall, Italy holds a market share in the US for stone materials of 18%, which has remained stable over the last three years (see Table 36). This means that in the US balance of trade, of the total value of stone materials imported, 18% is thanks to purchases from Italy. However, while the Italian market share in California has been increasing in recent years, trade relations with Texas and Florida could and should be intensified. As can be seen in Table 36, and to reconfirm what has been said above, in the state of New York, the Italian market share reached 40% in 2015, although with the loss of two percentage points on 2014. 56 Table 35 U.S. State Imports from the World (amounts in euro) Products: stone materials Euro % market share 2013 2014 2015 2013 2014 2015 %Δ 15/14 All States 1.886.333.343 1.983.125.020 2.460.581.817 100.00 100.00 100.00 24.08 California 364.614.639 358.053.030 445.045.909 19.33 18.05 18.09 24.30 Texas 254.688.937 289.545.852 369.091.098 13.50 14.60 15.00 27.47 Florida 213.038.855 233.116.698 293.935.033 11.29 11.76 11.95 26.09 New Jersey 150.476.095 178.863.118 223.749.623 7.98 9.02 9.09 25.10 Georgia 113.958.894 121.234.010 154.773.260 6.04 6.11 6.29 27.66 New York 125.184.321 115.843.852 126.152.422 6.64 5.84 5.13 8.90 Illinois 69.231.238 64.305.175 81.216.980 3.67 3.24 3.30 26.30 Virginia 62.648.636 66.514.731 73.425.736 3.32 3.35 2.98 10.39 Massachusetts 41.970.530 47.788.895 55.286.643 2.22 2.41 2.25 15.69 North Carolina 36.699.859 37.514.798 52.809.277 1.95 1.89 2.15 40.77 State Source: Global Trade Atlas Table 36 Stone materials: Italian market share of US market (total imports from Italy/total imports*100) 2013 2014 2015 USA: All states 18% 18% 18% California 17% 20% 21% Texas 13% 11% 11% Florida 14% 15% 16% New Jersey 28% 25% 26% Georgia 8% 7% 8% New York 34% 42% 40% Source: Global Trade Atlas, processing by IMM. In 2015, 357,000 tons of quality materials were exported there (especially marble blocks and slabs) for a value of 86.2 million, recording a decline of 18.2% in quantity and 8.3% in value. Libya and Egypt are the countries recording the biggest drop in demand, while Morocco continued to absorb materials, also due to the substantial investments in the construction industry made in recent years. Italian exports to the Middle East declined by 6% in quantity but increased by 7.2% in value, thanks largely to the driving force of the UAE which show a decidedly increasing demand trend. In 2015, over 83,000 tons of quality materials, for a value of almost 83 million euro, were exported to the UAE, showing growth of 36% in quantity and 47% in value compared to 2014. The construction sector in this area, in fact, was only partially affected by the reduction in oil prices thanks to financial reserves accumulated during the oil boom that made it possible to continue investment in the infrastructure and residential sectors. The growth rate of investments in the construction sector in this area is estimated at 4.4% 42. 42 Source: Realtà Mapei 58 Figure 11 Italian exports of ornamental stone (2015) Millions of Euro 10.01-13.89 13.89-24.07 24.07-72.26 72.26-462.01 No data Source: ISTAT, processing by IMM research department NB: In the map, only the countries to which the Italian stone industry exported ornamental stone in 2015 (marble, granite and other stones) for a value of above 10 million euro are highlighted. Products with a very high added value are exported to these markets with an average unit value (AUV) that even exceeded 2,000 euro per ton for Russia (see Table 40) in 2015. For the USA, the AUV amounted to 1,939 euro per ton and for the United Kingdom 1,742 euro per ton. As for imports, in 2015 Italy purchased 1.4 million tons of natural stone from the rest of the world, for a total value of 418.7 million euro, showing a decrease of 5% in quantity but an increase of 6% in value (see Table 41). Worthy of note is the increase in imports of finished products, both in terms of quantity and value. Overall, Italy imported 278,000 tons of finished products for a value of 112 million euro (+4% in quantity and +8% in value). Nevertheless, in general these were finished products with low added value for which Italian companies increasingly tend to go abroad. Raw material imports in decline. In particular, there was a drop of 19% in the quantities imported of marble blocks and slabs and 6% in granite. This could be the result of an actual reduction in international demand or simply a worsening of the confidence of companies in view of the prevailing macroeconomic factors. Exports of chips and powders, slate and pumice stone have not been taken into consideration. 63 Brazil is the leading supply market for the Italian stone industry. Italy imported stone materials, mostly granite, for a value of 70 million euro from this country in 2015 (see Table 42). Following Brazil, were India and China for a value of 55 and 31 million respectively. In conclusion, the Italian trade balance for the natural stone industry increased in 2015 by 6.5% compared to 2014, generating 1.6 billion of the national GDP. Net exports of the Italian stone industry have in fact always shown a positive balance and in particular from 2009 a decidedly high growth rate (see Figure 15). Despite the world economic crisis that began exactly in that period, the Italian stone industry has generally shown its ability to reinvent itself and invest in the excellence of the artisans behind the Made in Italy brand, promoting the development of foreign markets and increasingly focusing on highly innovative production systems and fine quality processes. The international market of stone products did indeed generate, in 2015, a trade flow of 25.7 billion euro, showing an increase of 12.4% on 2014. This increase is not due to an increase in quantities traded internationally, but rather to the higher average unit value of products on the international market by the main players in the sector, first of all, China and Italy. China is once again the leading country in terms of market share in global natural stone exports and Chinese companies account for 42% of the world's exported value. Italy is in second position with a market share of 12.4%, down one percentage point on 2014. The decline in the Italian market share did not depend on a reduction in Italian exports, since the value of Italian exports of ornamental stone in 2015 reached a record of over 2 billion euro, rising by 6.3%. It occurred because the Italian export growth was lower than the increase in world exports almost exclusively due to China, but also due to the strong increase in demand for quality finished products by the US market. In 2015, the United States became the first market for the worldwide natural stone industry, exceeding China for the first time. In 2015, the US imported stone materials, primarily finished products, for a value of 2.4 billion euro, recording a 24.1% increase on 2014. The positive trend of the US demand was sustained by the appreciation of the dollar, and the fact that natural stone, in particular marble, is becoming an increasingly fashionable material used not only for floors and walls but also objects of design in marble and furnishings. The main supplier country for the stars and stripes market is Italy. The US purchased finished marble products from Italy for a value of 333 million euro. This means a 29.8% growth in exports for this product category for Italy. It is interesting to note that in the individual states that make up the US Federation, penetration of the Made in Italy brand, taking into consideration all the production sectors together, is very uneven and in some areas there is ample room for growth. In the states of New Jersey and New York, however, the Italian market share is decidedly above average. In California and Texas, the Made in Italy brand has a much lower market penetration compared to the other countries. This observation is even more interesting when you consider that California and Texas are respectively the first and the second states for stone material US imports with a value that in 2015 in California stood at 445 million euros (+24.3%) and in Texas 369 million (+27.4%). 65 However, the international demand for stone materials also depends on other important markets apart from the US. The Chinese market, although it has reduced imports, nevertheless continued to import stone materials, especially raw materials, for a value of over 2 billion euro. Altogether, the EU countries imported natural stone for a value of 2.4 billion (value close to USA imports), thereby recording an increase of 5.1% on 2014 (the growth of European demand in 2014 was 0.3% compared to 2013). Finally, worth a mention is the Japanese demand for stone materials. This fell by 3.8 % in 2015 but is expected to increase for the next few years thanks to investment in residential buildings, commercial facilities and projects associated with the Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020. It will, however, be difficult to undermine the Chinese leadership in this country which currently meets 94% of demand for ornamental stone. 66 Allegato Statistico Statistical Annex 67 Tav A Produzione internazionale di Grezzo (tonn.)
