Together with others we develop a greater awareness of who we are and who we want to become, of what we want to do and the way we take to achieve our goals; through confrontation and open dialogue with those who are different than us we gain new skills and, at best, new sensibilities. His elegant atelier is situated in via Maggio n.3/R on the corner of via dello Sprone, where he commenced a collaboration with Leonardo Capecchi, a Florentine artisan and creator of sophisticated lampshades. We have met Farolfi to find out more about him, his work and new projects. How is your collaboration with Leonardo Capecchi going? Great, we follow the specific requirements of our clients; we even export decorated one-of-a-kind lampshades to Switzerland. What does your atelier offer? Paintings on canvas or panels, which are either the fruits of my personal creativity or inspired by antique art. I also accept commissions to execute paintings and trompe l’oeil according to the clients’ preferences. (In photo 1 there is a commissioned painting, displaying the clients’ cat). What kind of clients approach your atelier? There are two types: those who entrust everything to my immagination, for example this painting with a view of Florence, through a stone window (photo 2) from Bardini’s Villa, with a pigeon on the sill ( it can be a cat, a butterfly or more) and the other type of clients are those who know exactly what they want, such a person who asked me to insert a particulary loved ancient masterpiece in a painting I realized on a door, as a background of an original and unique trompe l’oeil decoration, added of personal, lively and modern details (photo 3, sliding door decorated using a Vanvitelli’s Roman landscape as a background of a trompe l’oeil painting). How do you proceed with your work? I listen attentively to what the client wants and then I draw one or more preliminary sketches until they are approved. Which technique do you use? It depends on the medium: oils, acrylic or both. The mural paintings can be carried out using moving supports: wooden panels can be attached to the wall; fabric can be glued or hung like a curtain, letting the light shine through. What is the cost of your paintings? It varies: dimensions, technique and complexity of the design are all taken into consideration. In my atelier you will find paintings from as little as 200 euros. What new ideas are you planning to present next? In addition to the various paintings I am working on, I also intend to propose ‘high quality’ numbered and autographed prints, reproducing some of my works. Firstly, the temperature drops and the city, after the hellish summer heat, can breathe easier again. This fresh breeze of air invites the local Florentines back from their vacation allowing bars, shops and newsstands to re-open again for the new season. While for most of us September is the month which signifies getting back to familiar daily routines, for others it is a month of starting something new, exciting and unknown. Of course, we intend the foreign exchange students, who for the very first time will experience what it is like to live and study in a different country. Clutching the fully packed suitcase, wideeyed and with heart full of emotions they dive in fully to the adventure of Florence. It is challenging in every way but equally rewarding, because this city of art is incredibly generous to all who try to get to know it. The great beauty and richness of histo- ry is entwined in the soul of the city. Each corner, each street, each minor detail and decoration hold fascinating stories which are just waiting to be uncovered. These surroundings are stimulating both artistically and academically. Also, not to mention the Italian cuisine, freshness of products and excellence of dishes made with love and experience. No exam will seem so frightening after enjoying a scoop of creamy gelato or a glass of fine wine while overlooking the sunset over the dreamy Tuscan hills. Lastly, the city follows a rhythm of life which is ignited with joy. It is a rhythm of Italian lifestyle which slowly becomes a part of you. It turns people to the most expressive ad most relaxed versions of themselves. It does not matter if you are here for three months or a year, what is certain that a piece of your heart will stay here forever, because after living in Florence there is no way a person can look at the city the same way. Life 生活 Жизнь September - October 2016 www.florenceisyou.com The solidarity of Florence and Tuscany for the victims of the earthquake in central Italy By A.B. e C.I. I n the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 24th a massive earthquake struck central Italy, whole villages in the provinces of Rieti, Ascoli Piceno, and Perugia fell to the ground. Among the victims so many children, many of whom had gone on holiday to stay with their grandparents, still linked to the towns where they were born in, grew up at and aged in. This tragedy shocked and moved Italy and the whole world; there are extraordinary manifestations of solace and solidarity everywhere. The mobilization of volunteers from all over Italy offering their support to the families of Amatrice, Accumoli, Pescara del Tronto, Arquata del Tronto and surrounding municipalities, was immediate. The feeling of fear, confusion, injustice and anger, in addition to the sadness, was overtaken by people’s need to make themselves useful and to lend a hand to the survivors. The Protezione Civile Toscana was promptly activated and its members restlessly dug through the rubble, rescued the wounded, mounted tents, provided bed covers and distributed food and water to the people who had lost everything and who could not return to their homes that were uninhabitable or nonexistent. Florence and the Florentines showed their most authentic, generous heart, by meeting at the rugby Stadio Padovani to donate basic necessity items like water, food, blankets, toys and clothes. Fundraising efforts also soon began and endless lines were formed to donate blood in the donation centers. For information please visit: www.regione.toscana.it/donareilsangue. The Tuscan Region also allocated one million euros and set up a checking account for the territories in central Italy affected by the earthquake: the account number is n.8888.32 at the agency 17 di Mps in Florence, the IBAN number is IT 43 Q 01030 02818 000000888832. The Misericordia di Firenze under the coordination of the Confederazione Nazionale delle Misericordie d’Italia sent two dog units with molecular dogs to search for the missing people under the rubble and they also opened a fund with a special bank account under the IBAN IT83C0867302804035000351546 payable to the Venerabile Arciconfraternita della Misericordia di Firenze - Piazza Duomo, 19 - 50122 Firenze. The reason for the deposit must be Photo credits Venerabile Arciconfraternita della Misericordia di Firenze clearly marked as follows: “Offerte pro terremotati Centro Italia”. Arriving from Florence, despite the difficult access to the disaster sites, volunteers from the Croce Rossa Italiana started helping in the first hours after the earthquake, they also set up a checking account with the following IBAN: IT38R0760103000000000900050, made out to the Associazione Italiana della Croce Rossa; anyone who wishes to donate should state the reason for the deposit as: “Poste Italiane con Croce Rossa Italiana – Terremoto Centro Italia”. Even sports has made its contribution. The football team Fiorentina, as a gesture of respect for the families affected by the earthquake, canceled the party that was scheduled for Sunday, August 28th, to celebrate the club’s 90th anniversary, and redirected the money gathered for the party to the populations of Lazio, Marche and Umbria. The Amatriciana pasta, an authentic symbol of the Italian cuisine in the world, named after Amatrice and based on its traditions, is at the heart of yet another initiative “A future for Amatrice”, that came about spontaneously on the web and was re-launched by Slow Food; in very few hours it received the support of restaurateurs from Italy and abroad. For those who wish to participate, simply add the Amatriciana pasta dish to the menu of your own restaurant and donate two euros for each dish of pasta amatriciana sold. The donation may be sent directly to the bank account of the Municipality of Amatrice and the money will help the reconstruction of the town destroyed by the earthquake (IBAN: IT 28 M 08327 73470 000000006000). Every gesture is important to help those who lost everything. Per info: www.regione.toscana. it/donareilsangue. Florence is You! Culture 文化 Культура www.florenceisyou.com 7 September - October 2016 The Academy of the Arts of Design in Florence honoring an ancient tradition for more than 450 years On October 18th we celebrate San Luca, the patron of artists By Enrico Sartoni Historian O ctober 18th marks a date on which, according to the Gregorian calendar, is the celebration of the evangelist and patron of artists San Luca. In Florence the celebration has a particular meaning. In fact, since 1339, a group of artists decided to come together under the presidium of the Apostle with a mutual purpose and an open heart following the example of the Apostle whom, is known to be according to tradition as the first painter of the Virgin. This partnership is renewed two hundred years later in 1563, under the title of Accademia delle Arti del Disegno (The Academy of the Arts of Design) born from the initiative of Giorgio Vasari and Cosimo I de Medici who continued to celebrate the date of October 18th. To honor the Saint a chapel was built inside the great cloister of the Santissima Annunziata Monastery, an authentic piece of jewelry decorated by Allori, Bronzino, Santi di Tito, Vasari and with statues of Montorsoli and Danti. Later, inside the same Chapel, which was the first headquarters of the Academy of the Arts of Design, were buried Pontormo and Benvenuto Cellini until 1987, when it was chosen to place next to the masters the Ministry and President of the Academy, Rodolfo Siviero, who recovered most of the paintings stolen by the Nazis from the Italian museums during World War II. Still today, after 450 years, the Academy of the Arts of Design, now presided by Cristina Acidini, honors its masters on October 18th with a solemn Mass celebrated by the Archbishop of Florence, Cardinal Giuseppe Betori, accompanied by the musical notes of Musicum Concentus conducted by Giacomo Granchi, followed by a solemn lecture entrusted this year to prof. Salvatore Settis, already President of the High Council for Cultural Heritage, and the proclamation of new academics who donate one of their works for the permanent collection. The piece will be exhibited on the same October 18th according to a ritual introduced since 1673 that saw the Academy realize its first art exhibit, not conceived for commer- Cappella di San Luca, Santissima Annunziata cial purposes, and therefore the realization, since 1734, of a printed catalogue of the exhibited works. Under the mark of San Luca, it can be said that a great part of the modern and contemporary Florentine art was born, that renews its creative vocation to be reborn every year: according to the biblical motto engraved in in the Chapel by Montorsoli, “Floreat semper vel invita morte”. For the first time, Palazzo Strozzi will be set up as a unique place of exposition, in which the artist is challenged also architecturally. The large installation entitled Reframe, that includes two renaissance facades of the building, foresees twenty-two large life rafts anchored on the windows of Palazzo Strozzi. It is a project that aims at bringing attention to the issue of immigration and the fate of refugees, fleeing destruction and wars, risking their lives every day to reach Europe by crossing the Mediterranean. Ai Weiwei himself said:“I’m really excited at the opportunity of holding one of my exhibitions in Florence, an amazing city with a great tradition. The piece for the facade touches upon a current issue, really tied to the contemporary; the problem of refugees is a key issue of the actuality of the world and of europe today. I think that it’s a great opportunity to give it a new frame, a new point of view on this issue, and to provide a new way of understanding what’s going on. This work acts as a big announcement for the exhibition: it gives a strong identity to what we believe in, to support men and to support human rights”. The exhibition dedicated to Ai Weiwei is curated by Arturo Galansino, General Director of the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi who comments: “The work of Ai Weiwei talks to us about important issues in a powerful and direct way, giving the art a strong social and political role. This project represents a great opportunity to make Florence a modern cultural capital, able to participate actively in the artistic avant-garde of our time”. Culture 文化 Культура www.florenceisyou.com 9 September - October 2016 By Luca Beatrice Critico d’arte Continued from page 1 that seem to be covered by everlasting snow when, in fact, they are slabs of marble worked on by man for centuries. Because of this characteristic, it is considered a unique place in the world. Every time an artist arrives in Pietrasanta they are called to confront with the evocative power of the stone. It is impossible to try and escape such fascination and to not accept the challenge, well aware of the fact that it wouldn’t be so easy to bend such a tenacious and proud material under domination, a material so indispensable to art nowadays. Helidon Xhixha is certainly one of the most interesting sculptors on the contemporary scene today and during the last few years its work has established itself for the originality of the sign and the processing of the material. He mostly used steal which he bent, modeled, enjoying its mirroring surface that absorbs everything that surrounds it until it divides, multiplies every image that comes into its way. He placed his large sculptures in the historical center of Matera, on the San Servolo Island in the Venetian lagoon, at Madama Palace in Turin, and recently he faced an international audience in London where he was widely appreciated. This is what they call emerging, highly appreciated by the critics. It wouldn’t have been difficult to simply choose an anthology of the most famous and beautiful works to place in one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. But Helidon is a man who loves challenges, something that can also be seen in his biography as a struggling artist, used to always be questioned. I met him in Pietrasanta while he was working on his new pieces. We entered the belly of Henraux together, where the marbles he had chosen appeared as if relaxed, almost defenseless and fragile – something incredible for a block weighing several tones – awaiting for the machines to forge the artist’s will and to help translate his thoughts. From this place I came up with the title for this article, The Rock, because the power expressed by the naked rock has no equivalent; it corners you, it prevents you from finding shortcuts or refuge. At least in the beginning it’s more powerful than you. To be able to fight this battle there is need for muscles and brains, intelligence and power, not being afraid to take risks or to plunge in. Nowadays the role that the sculpture plays on the scene of the contemporary art needs to be clarified theoretically. What needs to be mentioned first of all is that the maturing process of a sculptor is long and complex. There is no place for improvising here, it is a journey with different milestones to reach, and one needs to understand the language, the forms and the materials. Compared to other fields, whether it is painting or conceptual art, the path is longer, and for this reason sculpture needs more complex and articulated times. Sculpture is coexistent with continuity, with the reflection over the classic, and the break from the old ways, abandoning tradition, descending from the pedestal and attempting to always retrace new semantic imbalances. More than any other artistic genre, in order to last, sculpture needed to modify itself genetically, becoming a hybrid between the ancient essence, the object, the installation, the urban intervention until reaching Land Art and Earth Art. If in 1946 Arturo Martini – provocatively – called sculpture “the dead language”, he certainly didn’t have in mind how many more revolutions would be achieved in the second part of the twentieth century. When standing before the works Helidon Xhixha exhibition o n the main square of Pietrasanta, credits continiartuk Helidon Xhixha Shining Rock The great exhibition in Pietrasanta and the London Design Biennale Helidon Xhixha in his studio, preparing the sketch for London Design Biennale of Xhixha, realized out of marble, bronze, but also with tested steels, you can feel the vitality coming out from every bent form. His works are monumental excerpts that enchant, play between cold and hot, reveal a vision of the world and of an art that is entirely contemporary. Ha collocato le sue grandi sculture nel centro Helidon Xhixha, rendering of his installation for London Design Biennale The London Design Biennale will be held between September 7th and September 27th, 2016. Helidon Xhixha will participate at this first edition where the main theme is the utopia through design, representing his country of origin, Albany, with an installation that is inspired from the ideal city of Plato. Those of you, who read us for some time now, will have noticed that in addition to English we added information and articles in Russian as well. The realization of this idea was possible thanks to friend and colleague Ivan Kuznetsov, journalist and photographer based in Moscow, with a strong passion for history and for Florence. I share with Ivan the love for the classics of literature from his country; through his words emerge historical connections that important Russian intellectuals and musicians have had with Florence (page 27). And it is thanks to Ivan that we have started a partnership with Milan TV, a TV channel in Russian that helps to introduce our country to the Russians (you will find an example on page 23 and also at the following link you. fi.it/MilanTv, it is hilarious!). Florence is You! also began a collaboration with Panino Tondo (www.ilpaninotondo.it), everyone knows them! Their genuineness and hospitality are guaranteed and from September the delicious lunches brought directly to your home or office will also be accompanied by information from Florence is You! Among the articles that enrich this issue you can’t miss the one written by Olga Mugnaini covering the Florentine artist Silvano Campeggi known as Nano in the world of the arts. He crowns the cover of this issue, next to the icon per excellence, his Marilyn Monroe. Nano is a myth and together with his wife elena they are adorable (at page 15). We will introduce to you books and previously unpublished short stories, edited by Simone Innocenti, someone who understands books, not only because he is an avid reader (he reads everything, absolutely everything!), but also because he recently made his debut as a writer with Puntazza, his first short stories collection (at page 14 and 18). You think you know everything about someone…and then they surprise you! This happened to me recently with my friend, Marco. Indeed, because Marco Bazzichi is a journalist that by profession follows the news and politics and then one day, out of the blue, he tells me that he has a degree in aesthetics, with a thesis on “Dante e l’allegoria” and that he has Photographer Andrea Ristori always cultivated this interest as a passion; his article on page 17. What we can and want to do is to maintain the focus on this tragedy, so that the memory of the desperate faces and the mountains of bricks that stand today where used to be Amatrice and other municipalities affected by the earthquake won’t fade, and we maintain a watchful eye on what is already being done and what it will be done in the future. Having discovered some magical hidden gems here in Florence and throughout Tuscany; I am thrilled to share this incredible must see place with you all in the hope you will visit it for yourselves.Whether you are staying here as a guest of the hotel or come simply to enjoy the restaurants’ many wonderful dishes in the company of your boyfriend, this is, for sure one, of the most romantic dinner spots I have ever been to in my life, and I have travelled a lot! The food is amazing; so mouth-watering in fact, that annoyingly, I didn’t take photographs of the actual meal; but let that be my testimony to the standard of deliciousness. I had the swordfish with vegetables on the side, whilst my partner enjoyed beef scallops served with Tuscan wine. This is also a place where the locals come to eat which is a good sign if you want to escape the inner city restaurants, whose ambience can be infused with the noise of overzealous tourists – I have become selfish in my love for Italy! The views of the rolling hills, a golden sunset and tapered trees, aligned like custodians en route from the city to this heavenly place; it is mind blowing. You can see the entire city of Florence including the Duomo with enviably large estates nestled among the greenery. Don’t expect much conversation with such good food, great prices and incredible views such as this; it is a romantic setting overload! The Italians sure know how to date! I should also point out; this is not the place to wear heels. The dress code is rather smart-casual as is most of Italy actually, with rustic stairways and uneven stone floors, so flats will suffice. The service was great and the staff very friendly with a good command of the English language. Dante died in Ravenna on the night between the 13th and the14th of September 1321 and his body was placed in a coffin next to the basilica of St. Francis, the same basilica where the funeral was celebrated. The vicissitudes of the remains began early, aided by the desire of the Florentines to get them back in their own city. The demand that made more noise and to which it was harder to say no to came only in the middle of the 1500s and was put forward by none other than a Florentine Pope, Leo X of Medici. Obsequiously, the authorities in Ravenna replied inviting him to send someone to collect the remains and so it was done, but upon opening the tomb it was empty. The bones had been stolen by the monks of the nearby church, that kept them guarded over the following years. It suffices to say that when in 1692 the maintenance of the tomb was made, the workers were working guarded by soldiers. The remains remained there until 1810, then the monks, as a result of the Napoleonic laws that commanded the suppression of religious orders, had to leave the convent. They then buried the bones, inside the box where Father Antonio Sarti had enclosed them in 1677, in a walled door of the adjoining oratory Quadrarco Braccioforte in which they were found only in 1865, during the restoration of the building on the occasion of the sixth centenary celebration of the birth of the Poet. A year earlier, on May 7th, 1864, the Florentine town hall had addressed Ravenna authorities with an instance from the Gonfaloniere in which, to the Ravenna Mayor, he asked: “I am convinced that you will use all your influence with the Municipal Representation to achieve a happy outcome to the demand of the Florentines, who with this fact want to repair more than the bigger injustices, but also the sadness of the times in which they happened”. The Municipality of Ravenna responded that they would not yield anything and that the unity of Italy implied that they had the rights over the disputed deposit entitled to Ravenna, ending the comedy that took place for centuries around the tomb of Dante. In May 1865, to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Dante, the council made development works and landscaping at Braccioforte. While the workers were engaged in the excavations they found themselves having to remove the water that invaded the land with a pump and for it to work they removed the bricks from the nearby brick door. The worker, Pio Faletti, began to beat the wall with the ax coming across the box containing the bones, showing in the inscription: Dantis ossa denuper revisa die 3 Junii 1677. It was the famous father Antonio Santi’s box. All of this happened on May 27th, 1865, and the news spread in a flash even though there was no Internet and no cell phones. The authorities intervened and a notarial deed was made immediately which then was followed by a survey of the bones. The news of the discovery touched Italy, so the Municipality of Ravenna wanted to celebrate it properly. The skeleton was reassembled on a thin armor and placed on a crystal urn on a pedestal in the middle of Quadrarco di Braccioforte. The exhibition was made on the 24th, 25th, and 26th of June 1865 and was a resounding celebration of the centenary of the birth of Dante. People came from all over Italy to pay tribute to the glorious bones. Still, if this may appear like a happy ending, to complicate the story again private initiative intervened. In 1878, in fact, Pasquale Miccoli, former town clerk of Ravenna, ordered in his will that his heirs should deliver to his successor a package containing “several bones, deadly leftovers of the Divine Poet, stolen at the time of their unveiling in 1865”. Greeted with skepticism, the legacy turned out authentic. Shortly after, the heirs of a certain Mordani brought to the town hall a glass casket that also contained bones. So, on the eve of the sixth anniversary of the death of Dante, in 1921, it was decided to reconstruct the entire skeleton to end the affair. A commission was composed with the task of supervising the operation and to monitor that no thefts like the ones in 1865 were repeated. The origins of the festival date back to the 12th century when people from the vicinities came to Florence to cele- 13 brate Virgin Mary’s birthday and pray in the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata. Traditionally, the peasants brought the fruits of their labor as gifts to the mother of Jesus. Because they left their villages while it was still dark, they used handmade lanterns carried on long sticks to lighten the way with. Florentines have preserved this beautiful, colorful scene for centuries through the procession of the lanterns from Santa Croce to Santissima Annunziata on the Festa della Rificolona. The name of the festival comes from the young Florentines who would make fun of the peasants’ clothes and their strange walk when they reached the city. Women were especially mocked by Florentine children because of their rough and strangely shaped clothes. As soon as they entered the city the children would start singing “Ona, ona, ona ma che bella rificolona!”, a song that can still be heard today during the festival. The word rificolona is still commonly used as a form of criticism brought to women without any sense of style. Nowadays, the lanterns have become beautiful paper-mâché objects for display. A week before the festival workshops are being organized, teaching children to make their own rificolona, encouraging them to enter the competition for the Graziano Grazzini Prize where the best handmade rificolona is selected. The awards ceremony and the traditional Rificolona blessing are held in Piazza SS Annunziata. Scents of popcorn and warm sugar float in the air and children together with adults make their way into the piazza displaying proudly their paper lanterns. The celebration culminates in a “spontaneous” bonfire in the middle of the piazza where to the children’s delight, their colorful creations go up in flames. On September 8, families can participate at the annual Rificolona sull’Arno event where they can enjoy rides along the river Arno on lantern-lit boats. If you happen to be in Florence on September 7th don’t miss this beautiful festival, a mix of ancient folklore and modern day creativity. During the Imperial Rome, collectors would decorate their houses with original Greek statues or with reproductions as it can be seen in Pompei and Herculaneum. This fact has ensured through these marbles, the possibility for us to know many of the most important Greek masterpieces which were lost but reproduced in many versions for the collectors’ market. The admiration for ancient marbles continued throughout the Renaissance period: during this timeframe many ancient sculptures became famous, such as Apollo del Belvedere or Lacoonte, wanted by popes and royalty and studied as models by artists who were making casts or copies for collectors. It was only in the eighteenth century, together with the arrival of the Neoclassicism, when scholars realized that even the presumed original ancient works were mere copies of other sculptures. This was the moment of Grand Tour, the training voyage of the wealthy European to discover Europe. Surprisingly for us, in Florence at the Galleria degli Uffizi the main attraction for these travelers were not only the Renaissance paintings but more than anything the ancient sculptures. Among these the most famous was Venus dei Medici, a Greek marble from the first century BC, signed on the base by the Athenian Cleomene, inspired from the works of Prassitele, colored in imitation of the real and decorated with real earrings. The piece, preserved in the Medici Villa in Rome, arrived in Florence in 1677 together with other famous ancient sculptures from which Scythian and Wrestlers www.florenceisyou.com The many lives of Venus “Venere dei Mediciˮ The beloved sculpture by Napoleon mire the Venus in 1796 as a guest of the Grand Duke Ferdinando III of Lorena. A few years later, when Tuscany was governed by Borbone and the French had brought many works of art from Italy and from Florence to Paris, Napoleon remembered Venus and wanted it. The attempt to save it by sending it to Palermo was worthless: the sculpture arrived in Paris in 1803. To fill in the void left behind, the sculptor Antonio Canova was commissioned to create a Venus that is preserved at the Pitti Palace today. The absence of Venus was to be temporary: after the fall of Napoleon in 1815, together with many other stolen works of art, Venus returned to Florence and was relocated in her place in the Tribune. Pluto also leads the thought to “richness” of which he was the Greek divinity. This etymological insight underlines the sense that runs through the Canto V and Canto VII of the Inferno, highlighting something that could be found in all of Dante’s poetry, in his prose and in many important passages from the ancient and medieval philosophy. In the first Canto of the Commedia, the “less” is the “least” of those who degrade, who diminish, for those who sin by reversing human values. In Canto V of Inferno there is a strong idea of lowering, of sinking from which the decent into Hell is a mere metaphor, in canto VII a continuous referral to the “too much”, to confusion, to the whirl (“the infernal storm”), to the “more”. It is Minos, whom with his tail “judges and sends according as he grinds him” because “Girds himself with his tail as many times / As grades he wishes it should be thrust down”. The terrible infernal judge then warns “Let not the portal’s amplitude deceive thee”. Pluto will introduce us in return the sign of “more” where the greedy, avaricious and the prodigal have the same material relationship with the world surrounding them, and the only means they have in order to find satisfaction is that of “counting” their own riches or more likely squander them. A race for the whole, to have the material richness that will never satisfy these sinners “For all the gold that is beneath the moon / or that ever was, of these weary souls /could never make a single one”. For Dante the true values of existence and spirituality have to be searched for beyond the “more” and the “less”. The “more” and the “less” can be found in the whole moral sphere, when we are asking ourselves if an action is more or less just, if a person is more or less honest, if a behavior is more or less brave. But the virtues, unlike material riches, can’t be “quantified”. For this reason Leandro Sinibaldi cackles his remote passion with all of his love. As soon as his shift at the bakery finishes, a jobs which forces him to endure memorable early mornings transformed into daily normality, when the baker returns to his skyscraper he loses a lot of his baker self. He whistles and whistles all the way imitating the whistle of the train because that is the most difficult sound in the world. At least it is for him who reproduces it and keeps trying to reproduce it. This sound seems to him like the essence of the voyage itself and something that is constantly changing, becoming less important if the train makes round trips, because once you get on the train it won’t be long before you will get used it and only one ticket will do. Thus, Leandro Sinibaldi goes up to the terrace of the skyscraper and like every morning he whistles: from what seems to be a tower, he transforms into sound and whistles like a train. That skyscraper is his carriage, with which everyone travels. Quel grattacielo è la sua carrozza, dove tutti viaggiano. www.florenceisyou.com By Pasquale Ielo Journalist and photographer I went to visit them a dozen times, but every time with the same excitement. You arrive at their presence and remain silent. Some, who speak, do so in whispers as if fearing not to disturb their hieratic composure. Heroes of Riace are the two most beautiful and important bronze sculptures coming to us from the ancient Greek civilization. Nevertheless, when they are in front of you, instead of seeing them as two simple objects, a marvelous workmanship. The strong sensation as if you stood in front of something alien emanating immortal, mysterious and magnetic aura. The bronze statues look at you. Even when they stand so close to you they are “elsewhere” in time and in spirit, they stay there but it seems like they are thinking, raising questions. But what does Florence and The Riace Bronzes have in common? Actually, their first restoration had been carried out in Florence, in the Centro di Restauro della Soprintendenza Archeologica, after their discovery - 44 years ago - in the Ionian sea, where according to the legend, the goddess Venus was born. Moreover, it was in Florence that these statues were presented to the public for the first time, in a room of Archeologic Museum in 1980, where I also saw them. Only after then the Riace Bronzes were exhibited at the Quirinale in Rome, before reaching their final destination, where the restorations were perfected. Today, you can find them in an earthquake resistant room in the important Museo Archelogico di Reggio Calabria, which was designed by Marcello Piacentini during the thirties and recently re-opened after a modern and complex restoration. Unfortunately, it is quite distant from Florence and there Maybe you didn’t know that.... Pasquale Ielo Photographer are no direct flights. However, the long trip is repaid by the emotional experience. The bronzes will live up to your expectations. Also, it would be a great occasion to taste top-ten gelato on the beautiful coastline overlooking the Stretto, or dive in to the blue waters of neighboring Sicily, a true jewel in the heart of Costa Viola. I Bronzi ti guardano. English I tself an entire world - indeed, universe - the Istituto Geografico Militare is a true national treasure, set up when Florence was capital of the Kingdom of Italy (from 1865 to 1870). One of the first tasks undertaken was the production of the first topographical map of a united Italy to a scale of 1:100,000. An assignment which required 30 years of work. The Institute is fascinating not only for those with a passionate interest in cartography, but also for those who are merely curious about antique globes and atlases; the wonderful examples here have been housed in the magnificent rooms of this seventeenth-century palazzo for almost 150 years now. The collection also contains 200,000 books and photographic material, as well as geographical, chorographical, hydrological and geological maps of Italy, Europe and the entire world. The large salon is magnificently decorated with seventeenth-century frescoes and lined on two sides with monumental bookcases; the space in the middle of the room is occupied with various globes. The place is also a fully functional scientific institution, whose task is to constantly update cartography on the basis of the scientific instruments available. The military personnel are friendly and helpful; and whilst the silence of these vast rooms reveals that they attract few public visitors, one somehow gets the impression that the whole of the world is gathered about one. The Via Francigena is a dense network of roads that exists since the Middle Ages and travels across Europe leading pilgrims to large cities that are symbols of medieval Christianity, such as Santiago, Rome and Jerusalem; and we own it to bishop Sigerico, who left in 990 from Canterbury to Rome to receive the post of archbishop by the Pope John XV, a precise description of the journey, step by step. In the previous issues we have told you about its birth and we rode through the first five stops up to Lucca where we resume our journey. As we leave Lucca behind from San Gervasio door, through an interesting road with many historical and religious buildings along it, you can reach Capannori where the church of San Quirico is at, and just a bit later it is possible to arrive at Porcari, and with a deviation of five hundred meters you will reach the Abbey of Pozzeveri. Not far from there is the church of San Jacopo in Altopascio. From here, walking on the pavement of the ancient Via Francigena, once past the hills of Cerbaie, wild and deserted, it traces to the banks of the Arno river and you will soon get to San Miniato, a powerful and rich medieval village still perfectly preserved. From San Miniato, after an hour of walking, you embark on an extraordinary journey along the hilly ridges of the Val d’Elsa, dotted with castles, fortresses, monasteries, churches, originated because of the passage of Via Francigena. We soon come to Gambassi Terme with its thermal waters. Finally we climb up the hill towards the towers of San Gimignano, one of the most visited destinations in Tuscany, and it is from here that one of the most beautiful stops of Via Francigena begins, one that will lead us to Monteriggioni with its walls and unmistakable towers that takeover the hill. Walking through woods, medieval villages and castles, you arrive in Siena through Porta Camollia, the traditional francigeno access. The stopping point (the eleventh) is at the Piazza del Campo. Siena starts a challenging course along the white roads of the Val d’Arbia, along the foothills of the Crete Senesi, then through Monteroni towards Quinciano. A short distance away is the fortified village of Lucignano d’Arbia with the Romanesque church of San Giovanni Battista. Il nostro tarting with August 4th this year the big hall of the Collegio Romano, headquarters of the National Ministry of Heritage, Tourism and Cultural Activities is dedicated to Giovanni Spadolini, twenty two years after his disappearance. Spadolini was the founder of the Ministry, constituted due to the law decree of December 1974 by the government presided by Aldo Moro. In addition to giving the legal and organizational structure to the new Ministry, there was also the issue of facing the demolition of national heritage, cultural and environmental assets with a major lack of resources. Spadolini, historian and journalist, member of the Parliament for only two years, gifted with extraordinary skills and cultural knowledge, committed himself entirely to address the issue of the cultural heritage to the political and civilian life scene: he gathered public and private energies, sensitized the common folk, took advantage of every opportunity to address the matter of degradation and decay of our heritage to the general attention. The influential reports of Giulio Einaudi and Giulio Carlo Argan served to begin the recovery of artistic-natural beauties, such as Reggia di Venaria Reale and its park in Piemonte, reduced to an impassible jungle, or the Amalfi coast, disfigured by the abusive eco-monsters in cement. The controversy created in the press with friends such as Antonio Cederna and Renato Guttuso shook the public opinion’s feelings; the commotion created by the resounding theft in Urbino of masterpieces by Piero Della Francesca (recovered by the Police a year later) convinced Spadolini to present to the Parliament for approval, laws to install alarm systems in museums, increase the employment of caretakers, ensure the functionality of the National Library in Rome. The rumors about a possible sale of the roman church of Sant’Agnese in Agone to a private (an American wanted to buy even the Colosseum!) allowed Spadolini to impose the limits of private interventions: yes to contributions for donations or the recovery of works of art (maybe even with tax advantages like in the American system, like the Art bonus today), but the technical intervention had to be exclusively entrusted to the experts from the Ministry. Even Florence, the “home of Spadolini’s soul”, the city where he was born and where his most loved ones lived, also benefited from the positive frenzy of the Minister’s activism: if we think about the centenary celebrations of Michelangelo, to the reassessment of Macchiaioli’s art with the exhibit at the Gran Palais in Paris, to the recovery of the basement of the San Miniato Basilica, dating back to the year one thousand, and to the consolidation of the hill on which lay the beautiful church of the Olivetan monks. The celebration in Rome wasn’t just a celebration. The unveiling of the plaque realized by the current Minister of Heritage Dario Franceschini has been preceded by a meeting during which some of the greatest experts have traced the history of the Ministry from foundation until present day. Illustrating the guidelines of his political views on the structural renovation of the Ministry, Franceschini has outlined during his speech the relevant principles that more than forty years ago inspired the commitment and work of its founder. “The memory of the great Giovanni Spadolini is now perennial” declared Minister Franceschini a few moments before the unveiling of the plaque towards the end of the ceremony. “Therefore our commitment is that of following the path that he has traced more than forty years ago, the strong connection between education and heritage, moving forward with the reform of the Italian museum system and continuing to invest in the preservation of our cultural heritage, which thanks to Art bonus now enjoys significant private investments, reaching more than a hundred million from more than three thousand donors”. October 8th, 1803: the anniversary of the death of Vittorio Alfieri The great playwright, poet and writer resting in Santa Croce in Florence By Eduarda Liz Klaser V ittorio Alfieri is considered the greatest tragic poet of the Italian eighteenth century and, as if he was the protagonist of one of his tragic opera, he had a rather adventurous life, largely due also to his “tormented” character, an aspect that helped make him a precursor of “romantic” anxieties. He was less than a year old when he lost his father and at age nine he entered the Royal Academy of Turin, but he could not stand the rigidity of military discipline, and came out in 1766. In 1775 his first tragedy was staged , “Cleopatra”, and the success that followed opened the doors of the Italian theater to him. In the following years he wrote a great deal, about twenty tragedies, such as “Filippo”, “Polinice”, “Antigone”, “Virginia”, “Agamennone”, “Oreste”, “La congiura de’ Pazzi”, “Don Garzia”, “Maria Stuarda”, “Rosmunda”, “Alceste seconda” and with these he became the perfect role model for young writers. He translated a number of Latin texts and devoted himself to the Italian classics, from Dante to Tasso. It was in 1778 that he left Piedmont and moved to Tuscany, first to Siena and then to Florence. In 1777 he met Luisa, Princess of Stolberg and Countess of Albany; their relationship caused a great scandal because the countess was married and her husband was Carlo Edoardo Stuart, pretender to the throne of England and many years older than her. The Countess of Albany became Alfieri’s companion and to her he devoted many of his “Rime”. On the 8th of October, 1803, at just 54 years old, Vittorio Alfieri died in Florence, attended by Luisa Stolberg who commissioned to Antonio Canova Afieri’s tomb in the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence. Florence is You! Culture 文化 Культура www.florenceisyou.com September - October 2016 The Comedy Factory and the City of Florence Award By Maria Federica Giuliani President of the Culture Council Committee for the City of Florence T he third edition of the Fabbrica della Comicità. Com Comici o Miseria” happens in Florence under the patronage of the Municipality of Florence, a national cabaret competition organized by the Associazione Culturale SPManagement-Associazione Cultura Spettacolo, that in the wake of a great local tradition launched artists who dominate the national scene and offers to many young people an opportunity to make themselves known and also an important showcase to assert their own talent. Many video auditions arrived from aspiring comedians, 170 actually; castings were organized in Florence, Milan, and Rome. The finalists selected, in the two evenings that took place last June in the beautiful setting of the pool of Pavoniere in the Cascine Park, are ten: they will compete at the finals in September at the Teatro Le Laudi under the careful direction of the presenter Stefano Baragli. It is important to support, as the municipal administration of Florence, initiatives like this, valuable synergies of our territory. Festivals like this deserve our support, beyond the genre distinctions, reflection on comedy, and even more so the humor, are the essential stimulus for ar- the availability hours for fiscal visits that interfere with the treatment of the disease. Carlotta also founded “Totta x Tutti”, an association that supports and assists sick people. This award underscores how even an evening of entertainment can convey complex and sensitive messages very naturally and make room for solidarity with these initiatives, also bringing attention to the volunteering efforts in Florence, a big heart working in silence for the good of children and adults. Italiano T tistic practice. The importance that comedy and humor have taken in the relationship between reflection and artistic practice are well described by Luigi Pirandello in his essay entitled “Humor”. The concepts or ideals to which we would like to uniform to and remain consistent to are only masks, argues Pirandello, often useful and necessary. During the Festival, the City of Florence Award was established and each year it will award a character of entertainment, art, and culture that stood out during the 23 year or in their career. This year the prize was awarded to Carlotta Filardi, who had cancer and to whom the INPS presented a three thousand euro penalty because she was not found at home during a tax assessment visit during which she was in a chemotherapy session. Thanks to her, to her battle and the attention of the institutions in 2015, the “Carlotta Law” was launched allowing cancer patients or otherwise dependents on life-saving therapies, to not have the obligation to respect erza edizione della “Fabbrica della Comicità. A new project: Florence is You collaborates with Russian-speaking channel Milan TV so that Italians and Russians know better each other By Ivan Kuznetsov Journalist and photographer By Nora Smblyan Journalist R ussian-speaking channel Milan TV, based in Italy, posted the funny and interesting video some time ago. In this video the Milanese asks Russians about Russian culture, customs, daily life. We decided to reply and also give you a clue to the mysterious Russian soul. This series will help you to understand “Ivan Drago” and to ask yourself: What would you like to know about Russia? Italian ask: Why Russian writers wrote only tragedies? Janina Soldatkina, professor of Russian literature, Moscow State Pedagogical University (MSPU), answers: “Russians are, by nature, maximalists. Mysteriously, somehow they prefer to think about the whole world, about global ideas, projects, feelings, not about themselves. Russian writers, in this regard, are no exception. They would love to write about happiness, love, happy married life, but it’s impossible that everyone can be happy and loved. Russian writer is ashamed of realizing that his heroes are happy when somebody suffers. We can say the tragic endings of Russian literature are the form of compassion for all the miserable in the world. They say, look, we know that you suffer, so, our heroes suffer too. But a Russian writer can afford to create so-called “opened ending” as a last resort - when everything is objectively bad, but the writer doesn’t make it final. He gives to the reader hope and the right to offer own, happy ending. Since despite the tragedy, Russian maximalist still believes the best and he wants what’s best for the world, not just for himself”. September - October 2016 Florence is You! www.florenceisyou.com Daria Derakhshan The Florentine graphic designer and her pop soul Al cinema... From Milan, graduated from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory, with a major in piano and one in reciting from the Piccolo Teatro School in Milan, she is shy and has an amazing personality. Tall, slim, blonde, looking much younger than her age and always with a bright smile on her face, she is known to the general audience who has appreciated her in theaters both through her intense film and theater characters. Life 生活 Жизнь September - October 2016 www.florenceisyou.com Halloween in Florence “Trick or treatˮ or “dolcetto o scherzettoˮ On October 31 Il Castagnaccio Columbus day Un tipico dolce Toscano Il 10 ottobre negli Stati Uniti è festa nazionale, specialmente per gli italo - americani By Manuela Ranfagni Ingredienti 125 g di farina di castagne 150 ml d’acqua fredda un pizzico di sale 60 gr di noci 60 gr di pinoli 60 gr di uva passa un rametto di rosmarino olio extravergine di oliva By Ellen Miller O n October 31 children in the United States rejoice because they know what Halloween means not only do they get to put on a cool costume and deceive the neighbors, but they also get candy, and lots of it. It is a holiday that is celebrated in many countries, though rarely in Italy, making the day a bit of a letdown for American students studying abroad. Still, some bars and clubs capitalize on the occasion, and offer themed parties for those keen to dress up in costume. Trick or treating, carving pumpkins, bobbing for apples, hay mazes and haunted houses all are part of the tradition that is Halloween. The modern tradition of Halloween that we celebrate today is thought to have evolved from folk customs and beliefs from Celtic countries, some of which likely have pagan roots and others of which likely evolved from Christianity. Samhain, a Celtic festival, was timed to celebrate the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Halloween, or All Hallow's Eve also falls on the day before All Saint's Day. In the early church vigils were held the night before as a time for honoring the saints and the deceased. It was believed that All Hallow's Eve allowed the souls of the dead to roam about Earth to gain vengeance, so people would wear costumes to disguise themselves, a tradition that while much more secular now, continues to this day. For the truly dedicated, Halloween in Florence is arguably best spent at home. It's easy enough to assemble many of the components for a great celebration: the euro store gets into the spirit, selling costume accessories like witches hats and bags of candy, and though pumpkins are rare you can usually find something resembling what you would buy at home at the Mercato Centrale for carving. The best way to spend the early evening before going home to party, though? Check out the stores in the town from a nearby bar or piazza while the little expat and some Italian children go trick-or-treating... you won't even miss your American cul-de-sac. Versate il composto all’interno. Florence is You! Culture 文化 Культура www.florenceisyou.com 27 September - October 2016 The Tchaikovsky’s Florentine Il Popolo del Blues “Maxwell Streetˮ, a street to discover symphony “Life in Florence leaves an impression of wonderful sweet dream” during which he was crying with joy, admiring the architectural masterpieces, painting, Florentines and waters of Arno. The city inspired him to write “The Maid of Orleans”, “The Queen of Spades”, and many romances. Tchaikovsky loved Florence and Florentines, valuing highly the contribution of citizens and city’s atmosphere to his life and creativity. “I found in Florence everything for good work”, he repeated to dozens of world geniuses whose works were created under the impression of acquaintance with the city. Russian Tchaikovsky By Ivan Kuznetsov Journalist I n the last issue of Florence is You, dear readers, you could have known about Florentine weekdays of Fyodor Dostoevsky. Russian writer loved Florence, but in spite of that, he often complained about the climate, difficult conditions and others annoying little things of Italian life. Ten years later, his famous compatriot visited Florence and, in contrast, he became a big fan of the city. On 20 February 1878, two men, a young man and a deaf boy checked into “Città di Milano” hotel on Via Cerretani (today it’s a “Cerretani-Firenze”). Two gentlemen introduced themselves as Pyotr and Modest Tchaikovsky saying that they are accompanied by Pyotr’s servant Alexey Sofronov and Modest’s pupil Kolya Conradi. For Pyotr it wasn’t first acquaintance with Florence, but he first stayed on so long. Tchaikovsky liked Florence, and he enthusiastically showed his brother Uffizi, Palazzo Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti, San Lorenzo and Boboli gardens. They also dined in “Gilli e Letta” on Piazza della Signoria time after time. That’s when composer decided to write music everyday. He wrote few romances and “Reverie interrompue” in Florence. Tchaikovsky lived for two weeks in the city. He wrote in a letter on the day of departure: “I had here so many wonderful feelings of the city itself, of its surroundings, of paintings, of wonderful spring weather, of folk songs, of flowers, the scent of which pleases me at this moment, that I’m tired”. However, Pyotr came back in Florence at the invitation of a friend - Nadezhda von Meck - in December of the same year. He got himself and his servant Alexey the Villa Bonciani. Tchaikovsky loved to look at Arno, Florence and the mountains through binoculars standing on the balcony of the villa. Here, at the Villa Bonciani, early in December 1878, composer gets an idea of a new opera. He wrote in his letters and in his diary that he started the story of “The Maid of Orleans” by Schiller. Pyotr spent a month working without respite on the opera. The composer went to Paris immediately after Christmas to finish the work. Today there is a memorial plaque on the wall of Villa Bonciani: “The endlessness of Russian plains and the fluency of Tuscan hills became one in his immortal melodies”. His last and the most productive visit to Florence began in January 1890. Tchaikovsky came specially in the capital of Tuscany for writing a new opera “The Queen of Spades”. Despite the hard work, Pyotr has tried to be present at most important events of the city. He visited the carnival, was at the unveiling of the monument of Daniele Manin, at the opening of the tramway. Tchaikovsky walked along Arno every day and visited city theatres in the evenings. “The Queen of Spades” was ended 15 March 1890 and the composer started to work on setting the opera. However, this work was very tired for the composer, and he’d been sick until April. On 8 April Tchaikovsky left for Rome, where he finished his opera written in Florence. After completion of “The Queen of Spades” Pyotr wrote in his diary:“World history is divided into two periods. The first one lasted from the beginning of the world until writing “The Queen of Spades”. The second begin a month ago”. Florence gave Pyotr Tchaikovsky many wonderful days, By Anna Balzani M axwell Street is a fabulous street that crosses Chicago, also known to be the historical site of the market which is considered to be the birthplace of Chicago Blues. The story is worth discovering: born in the 80s of the nineteenth century, Maxwell Street becomes the collection center of traders who reached Chicago in search of fortune, selling goods of any kind. Between the 30s and the 40s of the nineteenth century they brought several musicians from the plantations in South, who performed using musical instruments in order to make a living or were being used to attract the attention towards the merchants’ goods. This is the place where bluesmen from the countryside encountered local artists such as Big Billy Broonzy, spreading the seeds of electric and urban blues later made famous by names like Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin Wolf. With “50100, Maxwell Street”, an initiative part of Estate Fiorentina 2016, Il Popolo del Blues bring to the city of Florence the atmosphere found on the Chicago Street, with four acoustic concerts in different markets of the city: September 3rd in Sant’Ambrogio with Fabrizio Berti Jug Band, September 10th in Isolotto with Swing Guitar Project, September 17th in Cure with Amanda Tosoni & Andrea Caggiari Duet and September 24th in San Lorenzo with other musicians who wear the label of Il Popolo del Blues (11,30 pm, free entrance). From the grandness of the Piazza del Duomo in the historic centre, to Piazza Santa Croce, the site of the Calcio Storico Fiorentino; to the Piazza della Signoria, the political hub of our great city and a fabulous outdoor artistic and orchestral venue; all create a justifiable pause-for-thought in our route march across the city. The most recent Piazza to be given a full make-over, and in my mind one of the prettiest, is Piazza Santa Maria Novella; just down from the Piazza della Stazione, and topped and tailed by the magnificent Santa Maria Novella Basilica, dedicated to The Virgin Mary; and the Novecento Museum, once home to the 13th century San Paolo hospital, now dedicated to contemporary works of art in Florence from the 19th cen- tury to present day. Either side of the piazza plays host to a number of elegant and newly renovated hotels, and topical bars & bistros, all of which contribute to the historically festive ambience of this square. The transformation is entirely holistic, from the incorporation of sympathetic railings to contain the thousands of rose bushes which surround each of the many grass areas and perfume the architectural seating area in the centre; to the newly cleaned marble obelisks which sit on four bronze turtles by Giambologna and topped with the Florentine lily. These, originally wooden posts, were first introduced in 1600 to mark the turning point of the “Palio dei Cocchi” - the chariot races – which preceded the final of the Calcio Storico event to determine which Florentine quarter could field the best team. Now they punctuate this wonderful city scape, creating a depth of field for every photographer and shade for every weary traveller. Piazza Santa Maria Novella, indeed, on the street where I live! And it is the first certified organic ice cream shop in Tuscany! Says Tiziana, the owner, “We have given the store the name of our son: Edoardo; and certainly a flavor is also dedicated to him: the “Gianduia according to Edoardo” (“Gi- anduia secondo Edoardo”), an ice cream with hazelnut and chocolate, very tasty and creamy. For the sorbets we only use fresh seasonal fruit, the cones are handmade in front of the customers and the fragrance they emanate is so irresistible it attracts people that were just passing by”. Entering Edoardo’s is like taking a little trip to the past; all make you breathe the atmosphere of the old dairies. It’s a bit like this ice cream shop had always been here...
