In the 1940s, Charles and Ray Eames molded
plywood in two directions, shaping it to the body so
a hard material became comfortable. They started
with a plaster mold that had heating elements
against which a membrane (inflated by a bicycle
pump) pushed thin sheets of glued veneer. As with
