Il vincitore dell’edizione 2016 del Cultural Heritage Rescue Prize è Ahmad Naser Sarmast, un eroe
moderno che dedica la propria vita alla Musica in un contesto difficile come l’Afganistan.
Seguendo le orme del padre, famoso musicista, direttore d’orchestra e compositore dell’inno nazionale
afgano, Sarmast ha conseguito il diploma musicale a Kabul nel 1981. Costretto ad abbandonare il proprio
Paese negli anni Novanta a causa della guerra civile, ha ottenuto nel 1993 il titolo di Master in musicologia
al Conservatorio Statale di Mosca. Dopo aver richiesto asilo in Australia nel 1994, è stato il primo afgano
ad ottenere un PhD in musica, presso la Monash University.
Sarmast ha deciso di rientrare in Afganistan nel 2008, puntando sulla musica come elemento culturale
a contrasto del terrorismo, nel Paese liberato dai Talebani. Su invito del Ministro dell’Educazione, si è
occupato di un piano per recuperare la tradizione musicale afgana soppressa dalla dittatura. Nel 2006
Sarmast aveva già presentato il progetto Revival of Afghan Music (ROAM) con l’obiettivo di fondare una
scuola per avviare i bambini di ogni estrazione sociale allo studio della musica afgana e occidentale.
Sarmast sarebbe così diventato nel giugno 2010, a Kabul, fondatore e direttore dell’Istituto Nazionale di
Musica dell’Afganistan, nel quale i bambini svantaggiati ricevono una borsa di studio mensile di 30 dollari.
Nel 2013 L’Orchestra Giovanile Afgana ha avuto l’opportunità di esibirsi in vari Paesi del mondo, tra cui
negli Stati Uniti. Accusato dai Talebani di corrompere i giovani, Sarmast è rimasto ferito in un violento
attentato l’11 dicembre 2014. Dopo una difficile operazione in Australia che gli ha restituito solo parte delle
funzionalità dell’udito, Sarmast continua ad insegnare musica ai bambini della sua scuola.

modern hero, devoted to promote Music in the difficult context of Afghanistan.
As his father was a famous musician, conductor and composer of the afghan national anthem, Sarmast
graduated from a Kabul music school in 1981. He left his state in the 1990s due to civil war. Sarmast
earned a Master’s degree in musicology in 1993 from Moscow State Conservatory. He was given asylum
in Australia in 1994. In 2005, Sarmast became the first Afghan to earn a PhD in music, from Monash
University.
Sarmast returned to Afghanistan in 2008, investing in music as an element to contrast terrorism in his
country after the defeat of the Taliban. Under the invitation of the Ministry of Education, Sarmast prepared
a plan to restore Afghan music traditions suppressed under years of Taliban rule. In 2006, Sarmast had
outlined his proposal in the Revival of Afghan Music (ROAM), wanting to open a dedicated music school
with a curriculum combining both Afghan and Western music. He succeeded in being the founder and
director of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM) in Kabul on June 20, 2010, a school where
the underprivileged children receive a stipend of $30 per month to allow them to focus on school.
In 2013, ANIM’s Afghan Youth Orchestra toured in countries like the United States. Considered responsible
for youth corruption, Sarmast was injured in a suicide attack by the Taliban on Dec 11, 2014. After a difficult
surgical intervention in Australia, he partially lost hearing, but he continues teaching music to children.
