The Art of Holidaying
The Art of Holidaying Places and events connecting tourism, culture and environment JUN E > O C TO BE R 2 0 0 7 1 The USB digital connection is the primordial symbol that, by a creative mutation, becomes a new icon. Three arms and three shapes symbolising three great reference areas connected to each other: tourism, culture, environment, incorporated in one “totemic” shape, close to the world of art. The art of holidaying, of course. The programmes in this publication were sent to us on 12 March 2007 and are subject to variations Must Exhibitions and Museums In Festival Not only Parks Culture and Nature Charms and Memories A Thousand and One Events Around the Mountain Dairies The Museum Nights The Exhibitions The Mirrors of the Stars Are you looking for an unforgettable holiday? What would you say about attending a concert at an altitude of 2000 metres, or listening to an actor reciting the most beautiful words of a great writer or the reflections of a philosopher on the issues of modern life, while the first rays of the morning sun strike the Dolomite peaks? Or would your rather watch a dance show in a hydroelectric power station, an exhibition of the world’s great works of art, or be enthralled by the intricacies of economics explained by eminent academics from all over the world? And what if you were to discover the unimaginable treasures of the nomad people of the Steppes within the walls of a spectacular castle? Would you like to listen to major exponents of information, perhaps even while sitting in a field beside an imposing fortress from the First World War? And what if towns, valleys and alpine houses became stages for jazz and classical music concerts, and if a visit to a museum turned into an exciting multimedia experience? In this guide - ‘The Art of Holidaying’ we have selected the most interesting proposals for 2007, which vividly, effectively, enjoyably and innovatively bring culture, territory, environment and, of course, tourism together. We have organised these proposals into two main sections: ‘Must’ and ‘Culture and Nature’. The first section contains the major exhibitions mounted by the museums of Trentino, news concerning theatre, dance and music festivals and the summer events organised by the three nature parks situated in the region. ‘Culture and Nature’, on the other hand, is a collection of everything the Trentino area has to offer in an evocative combination of originality, culture, local traditions and artistic value. A kaleidoscope of initiatives breathing life into the summer and offering quality, uniqueness and interest for the ideal holiday tailored to your own personal tastes and expectations. We look forward to seeing you! Must Exhibitions and Museums From a journey of discovery into the roots of contemporary design to exhibitions of the gold artefacts and jewellery of the inhabitants of the Steppes. Or innovative new perspectives on the great mystery of evolution, the mystery of the stars, the Middle Ages and archaeology. The great museums of the Trentino area offer interactive exhibitions, itineraries and initiatives. 2 3 Mart Rovereto IL MODO ITALIANO. DESIGN ITALIANO E AVANGUARDIA NEL XX SECOLO 3 March - 3 June ‘The Italian way’ investigates the relationship between design and the figurative arts in Italy in the 20th Century and recreates the complex creative mood paving the way for modernity in the early 1900s in Italy. Organised in collaboration with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Royal Ontario Museum of Toronto. LA PAROLA NELL’ARTE. RICERCHE D’AVANGUARDIA NEL ‘900 DAL FUTURISMO AD OGGI ATTRAVERSO LE COLLEZIONI DEL MART 10 November - 3 February 2008 From the Futurist, Dadaist and Surrealist periods to the present day, the exhibition explores the roots of the relationship between words and images, a relationship which grew to maturity during the second half of the 20th Century. LANDESAUSSTELLUNG 2007 MAURICE DENIS. MAESTRO DEL SIMBOLISMO INTERNAZIONALE 23 June - 25 September Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto Landesausstellung 2007 is a journey of discovery into the European symbolist movement involving both the Rovereto and the Trentino branches of Mart in two distinct exhibitions. Rovereto will be hosting, for the first time in Italy, over 100 masterpieces by the great French painter Maurice Denis, who lived from the late 19th to the mid 20th Century. URSS: 1945- 1980 OPERE DALLA COLLEZIONE ALBERTO SANDRETTI 13 October - 6 January 2008 The ‘unofficial’ art of the former Soviet Union presented through the works of numerous relatively unknown artists: from the first currents of dissent questioning the canons of Soviet realism to the 1950s and the underground artistic movements of the 1970s. Mart Trento Palazzo delle Albere LANDESAUSSTELLUNG 2007 SULLE TRACCE DI MAURICE DENIS. SIMBOLISMI AI CONFINI DELL’IMPERO ASBURGICO 23 June - 28 October In an initiative exploring European symbolism with two parallel exhibitions at the Mart sites in Rovereto and Trento, Palazzo delle Albere will be hosting an analysis of this artistic movement that concentrates primarily on the Italian and European artists working in border areas between different cultures, such as the former Habsburg provinces of the Tyrol and Trentino-Alto Adige. DEPEROPUBBLICITARIO. DALL’AUTO-RECLAME ALL’ARCHITETTURA PUBBLICITARIA 13 October - 24 February 2008 The posters, drawings and sketches produced by Fortunato Depero for advertisements in the first public exhibition to bring them all together at once. > 4 Today, the Mart Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto symbolises the Trentino area’s dedication to the modern and contemporary. This advanced cultural hub of international stature has a multitude of roles, it is both museum and research centre and is active in education and the dissemination of art. The museum boasts over 30,000 paintings, drawings, etchings and sculptures, including a collection dedicated to Futurism, about 3,000 works donated by the Rovereto born artist Fortunato Depero, the Giovanardi Collection, with many masterpieces from the early Italian 20th Century, the Panza di Biumo Collection, with works by American artists from the 1980s and 1990s, and the Feierabend Collection of modern and contemporary Italian art. In 2002, Mart gained an additional museum facility at Rovereto, designed and built by architect Mario Botta and engineer Giulio Andreolli, from Ticino and Rovereto respectively. This building, which is now a recognised symbol of the City of the Oak, features a large piazza dominated by a great glass dome and boasts 12,000 square metres of exhibition space. The multi-storey interior of the museum hosts a large proportion of the permanent collection, educational itineraries and significant temporary exhibitions of international scope. With a site in Rovereto and a site in Trento, the latter hosted in the 16th Century Palazzo delle Albere, Mart offers many occasions to encounter 19th and 20th Century art from Italy and beyond. ORI DEI CAVALIERI DELLE STEPPE TESORI DAI MUSEI DELL’UCRAINA 1 June – 4 November An exhibition dedicated to the extraordinary treasures of the people of the Ukrainian Steppes and the symbolism of power and prestige expressed by these nomad horsemen in their use of gold and other precious materials, and also in their great burial mounds (kurgan), the area’s equivalent of the pyramid. Castel Stenico Open 9.30am - 5pm 1 June - 4 November, 10am - 6pm Closed on Mondays unless a holiday Admission: Full price € 3.5, reduced € 2, family € 7 The history of this castle is intrinsically tied with that of the Prince Bishops, who were its keepers up until the 18th Century. This fortress of great strategic importance watched over the main communication route towards the Valli Giudicarie for over a millennium and, earlier still, was the site of a Roman settlement and a Paleochristian basilica. > What is today the most important historicartistic museum of the region was originally a military fortress, the so-called Castelvecchio, built in the first half of the 13th Century. Over the years other buildings were added and, after it became the home of the Prince Bishops of Trento, its original features for defence changed gradually into those of a lord’s residence. In the late 14th Century one of the most important examples of gothic art (the splendid Cycle of the Months), was frescoed in the Aquila Tower. This was followed by the construction of the inner courtyard and loggias above and, in the sixteenth century, the Magno Palazzo, a magnificent residence of evident 6 Renaissance inspiration. The history of Buonconsiglio Castle is interwoven with the history of the whole region. It was the seat of the Prince Bishops until 1803, a barracks for the troops of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918, the seat of the National Museum from 1924, and in 1992 it was named Castello del Buonconsiglio, Monumenti e Collezione Provinciali, which includes the museums of Castel Beseno, Castel Stenico and Castel Thun. Besides its architectural and artistic magnificence, Buonconsiglio Castle offers an interesting archaeological and artistic display and, every year, it hosts important temporary exhibitions. This enchanting area of Trentino plays host to the International Academy of Organ and Clavichord Improvisation. It is directed by Maestro Edoardo Bellotti, who handles the research and training aspects, and brings together musicians and experts from around the world, selected students and listening pupils into one single masterclass and a longer course. It also offers concerts performed by teachers and musicians of repute on instruments of outstanding calibre. The theme of this edition is Dietrich Buxtehude’s keyboard music. Each year, for artistic reasons and to valorise historical organs of particular prestige, the opening concert of the summer Academy is staged outside of Smarano. This year the event has been fixed for 24 July in the Basilica della Passione in Milan, which will be followed by a concert outside of Italy’s confines in Kongsberg, Norway, on 25 July. Following the two April performances in Sanzeno and Coredo, the interesting springtime musical preview staged by the Academy will head on to Cles, on 19 May, with ‘I Vocalisti di Lubecca’ (The Lubeck Vocalists). Juan José Dolado > The Festival of Economics makes a highly anticipated return to Trento this year. The topic of this year’s edition is ‘Human capital and social capital’. Nobel prize winner Gary Stanley Becker will be coming to Trento to present his essay on human resources in the 21st Century. Last year’s edition was met with a remarkable reception: for the first time, a subject widely perceived to be so unfathomable that it is often called a grey science motivated thousands of people to queue up patiently to listen to and meet the great minds of economic thinking. The topic of the first edition, ‘Wealth and Poverty’, drew 50,000 visitors to Trento over four days. The majority of these were young, aged between 18 and 35, who came in their throngs to the meetings, debates and events in an atmosphere of a contagious desire to understand and seek answers to the questions shaping today’s global scenario and our everyday lives. The second edition will be held from 30 May to 3 June: the streets, squares, Palazzos, cloisters, gardens, university lecture theatres and cafes of the city of Trento will provide the setting for sociologists, artists, economists and political observers, journalists and analysts of how the world is changing today to meet the public and discuss this year’s fascinating topic. The Festival of Economics has been made possible through the concerted efforts of many different stakeholders, organisations and public (the Autonomous Province, the Municipality and University of Trento) and private (Il Sole 24Ore, Editori Laterza and Intesa SanPaolo in addition to cooperatives, bookshops, recreational, cultural, and social associations to name but a few) institutions. Trentino, acknowledged internationally as a crucible of study in a wide variety of fields, such as research, innovation and local development, has put the opportunities offered by the province’s special autonomy to good use in order to cater for a widely felt need for answers – the result is this second edition of the Festival of Economics. The initiative was conceived to showcase works and creations of contemporary art in an outdoor environment, in the fields and forests of the verdant, evocative and uncontaminated Val di Sella, a valley on the southern slope of Valsugana, near the town of Borgo Valsugana. In 1996 the ArteNatura itinerary was created, along which visitors can discover the works of the artists and appreciate how the works themselves interact with nature. This initiative is in keeping with the vocation of Arte Sella as more than simply a creative space, but as a creative process in which the works grow and change with each passing day. Some of these installations have become icons in their own right, such as the ‘Vegetal Cathedral’, created in 2001 by the artist Giuliano Mauri near Malga Costa, and the very recent ‘Theatre’ by Roberto Conte, which will host theatrical performances and concerts. The relationship with nature and its language also provided inspiration for the ‘Fucina Arte Sella’ project by maestro Mario Brunello, offering a unique workshop experience for selected maestros and pupils of different musical disciplines and other areas of art. This summer, the ArteNatura itinerary will gain artistic creations by Armin Schubert (Austria), François Lelong (France) and Jaakko Pernu (Finland), while the English artist Heather Jansch will be exhibiting a number of her sculptures in Malga Costa. The tiny squares, streets and lakefront of the town will serve as the settings for meetings, events, shows, discussion and, most importantly, broadcasts, so that for once, the public can not just hear but also see their favourite presenters, share a joke or two with them and perhaps even take part themselves in a live transmission. Riva del Garda will host some of Italy’s major radio networks, such as Radio1 Rai, Radio 24, Radio Deejay and Radio2 Rai as well as many university and local stations and a number of major foreign stations. Now in its fourth year, the festival has transformed this corner of Trentino into a veritable workshop where historic programmes share the same space as newer shows, where tradition meets research and innovation and where questions concerning the present and future of radio broadcasting are addressed. This is an opportunity to experience at first hand the vitality and energy of this epochal means of mass communication and its ability to bridge the gap between millions of listeners, making them laugh or even reflect on serious issues through the power of words and intelligence. Between July and August, the most beautiful mountains in the Trentino area become auditoriums and stages hosting the greatest names in jazz, world music and classical music, in an initiative that also offers an opportunity to discover enchanted landscapes and enjoy delightful walks to reach the concert, side by side with the musicians themselves, with their instruments slung over their shoulders. This year’s programme once again boasts major names from the national and international scenes such as Sergio Cammariere, Gianmaria Testa, Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, Uto Ughi, Giovanni Allevi, Trilok Gurtu, Richard Galliano and many others. The festival also makes space for the spoken word and discussion. For the past few years, this event has been broadened with the addition of the Dawn of the Dolomites, almost a festival within a festival, in which artists, actors and men and women of culture come together against the spectacular backdrop of the high mountain sunrise to deliver performances, recitals and monologues. Guests this year include the actor Ascanio Celestini, the scientist Margherita Hack and the jazz musician Dave Douglas. If all this were not enough, the ‘Sounds of the Dolomites’ also includes a number of world premier performances devised specifically by the artists for the Festival and the mountain setting which, in addition to drawing substantial public and critical acclaim, have in the past often spawned shows and albums of international stature. Examples of these are ‘Canti Rocciosi’ by Giovanni Sollima, ‘Mountain Passages’ by the jazz musician Dave Douglas and ‘Gente in cerca di nuvole’, a homage to Fosco Maraini by Stefano Bollani. Established three decades ago, Pergine Spettacolo Aperto is the oldest festival in Trentino. The performances are the original outcomes of workshops for young artists, and are created by professionals of international calibre in search of unusual solutions and an emotive form of communication with the audience through the use of different languages. Lavarone, Forte Belvedere > A summer to discover the great cultural and historical heritage of Trentino, with its mediaeval castles and forts, defensive installations from the Great War, aristocratic Palazzos and Renaissance villas in which the atmosphere and lifestyles of a past era are rekindled in the ‘Storie a Memoria’ initiative. History and memory come together in a fusion between reality and fantasy taking visitors back in time to turn a visit to a castle or Palazzo into an opportunity for both fun and reflection. This extraordinary summer initiative opens with ‘Gioco dei castelli’, involving some of the most beautiful and distinctive castles in Trentino: such as Castel Stenico, which will host ‘Musica nei Castelli’ – ten events dedicated to classical music – and Castel Beseno which will once again set the stage for the duels and battles of ‘All’armi all’armi’ with the spectacular performances of jugglers and acrobats. This fortification in the Vallagarina also sets the stage for ‘Notturni al castello’ where the audience experiences a night of sounds and performances by torchlight, whilst ‘Il Castello delle leggende’, staged in Arco, guides us through Trentino’s legends. The offerings of ‘Suoni e Luci nei Castelli’ are also performed within the walls of medieval castles. The performances play out events, stories and legends of the location, with shows that are enhanced by the particular atmospheres created with the aid of sound and light. ‘Seduzioni in Villa’ brings the glory of the Renaissance and the 18th Century back to life in some of the area’s most interesting historic Palazzos, whereas ‘Memoria dei Luoghi’ pays homage to more recent events, the memories of which still live on today in the local people and in the mountains and valleys scarred by the Great War, with performances that give us pause to reflect and remember. 32 ALL’ARMI ALL’ARMI Besenello, Castel Beseno 3, 4, 5 August 26 July LA NEVE INSANGUINATA Vermiglio, Forte Strino 16 August GALEAS PER MONTES Brentonico, Alto Garda 14 - 20 July IL CASTELLO DELLE LEGGENDE Arco, Castello di Arco Il Re del Garda 9-11 August BONDONE IN STRADA Bondone 14, 15 August Holiday Offers MUSIC IN THE CASTLES AND POETRY IN THE HAMLETS From 18 July to 18 August, three nights’ accommodation with breakfast in an Agritur or Garnì, admission to one concert at Castel Stenico, an evocative experience with ancient hamlets setting the scene for ballad singers, to discover legends, theatre and music. A series of encounters in which to discuss peace with the initiative’s guests and to share thoughts and offer suggestions on how to effectively achieve peace, set in some of the most significant locations of the Great War, such as trenches, fortifications, outposts and monuments. With its 350 kilometres of hiking trails and, in some parts, mountain bike paths, the ‘Sentiero della Pace’ is the area’s longest itinerary, along which visitors can discover the fronts extending from the Marmolada to the Adamello and from the Pasubio to the Stelvio. In addition to these are thirty kilometres of defensive installations from Panarotta to Monte Croce, with barracks, field camps and other constructions restored to their original state, viewable along the itinerary dedicated to the Great War on the mountains of the Valle del Fersina and, lastly, the Bondo Monumental Cemetery in the Valle del Chiese, in memory of hundreds of Austro-Hungarian soldiers and which was recently restored, ninety years after the first stone was laid in 1916. The symbol of this project for peace is the ‘Bell of the Fallen’ memorial bell in Rovereto. Every evening for the past seventy years, the bell, cast in bronze melted down from cannons donated by the nations fighting in the First World War, has commemorated the victims of all wars with a hundred tolls. 34 WEDNESDAY 11 JULY TUESDAY 7 AUGUST 2pm Lagorài 4pm Altopiano di Folgaria Lavarone e Luserna, Forte Belvedere Pian delle Maddalene LELLA COSTA actress HELMI M’HADHBI, MATTIA CAPPELLETTI SARA GIOVINAZZI in concert TUESDAY 24 JULY 2pm Dolomiti di Fassa Rifugio Contrìn FABIO MINI general GIANFRANCO D’ANNA journalist ROBERTO ZANINI journalist I VIRTUOSI ITALIANI Canti Rocciosi THURSDAY 16 AUGUST 2pm Valle del Fersina, Feldkapelle MARCO BALIANI actor ANDREA MAIA, VICENTE COSSA CARLOS ALVARADO RODRIGUEZ in concert AKILA OUARED Director of the UN TUESDAY 31 JULY MONDAY 20 AUGUST 2pm Pasubio Observatory for human rights in Algeria KAM IL GITANO, ZAHARINA ASENOVA ALEKSEJ ASENOV in concert 4pm Valle del Chiese Forte Pozzacchio Forte Larino DON LUIGI CIOTTI SUSANNA DUDIYEVA President of the Founder “Libera-Associazioni, nomi e numeri contro le mafie” FAUSTO POCAR President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Jugoslavia GIANNI SPERANZA Mayor of Lamezia Terme NAVEED NADEEM, STEFAN JAVED JOHN SALINS in concert Mothers of Beslan Committee ELISA AMISTADI, GIORDANO ANGELI, IRENERÌ in concert FRIDAY 24 AUGUST 9.30pm Rovereto Bell of the Fallen DAVID GROSSMAN writer ORCHESTRA DI NAZARETH in concert Holiday Offers From 7 to 14 July, seven nights’ half board accommodation in a 2, 3 or 4 star hotel, dinner in a typical Trentino Osteria, guided excursion to discover the Alpine world, tour with cheese tasting at a cheese factory, afternoon workshop on berry farming or the production of local produce, rental of the ‘Sentieri Vivi’ PDA, admission to ‘Dolomites of Peace’, admission to the Visitor Centre of the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park and gift basket with local products. The production of apples, vegetables, cured meats, fish, oil, cheese, berries, polenta, wines and grappas is expressed in a light-hearted theatrical key, becoming a first hand experience as everyone is invited to sample the tastes and aromas of cheeses in which the very perfume of the meadow is captured, in ‘Degustazione di prato, bovina, bovaro, latte, caglio e casaro riassunti e ristretti nei loro formaggi’, to make their own Knödel dumplings in ‘Il tuo canederlo’, their own strudel in ‘Il tuo strudel’ and even hoe a piece of land to plant salad in ‘Tu zappa’. In ‘Les feuilles qui résistent au vent’ Benin’s Koffi Kôkô journeys through traditional and contemporary African dance, whilst Guinea’s Circus Baobab brings rhythms and acrobatics under the roof of Mart. Faso Dance Théâtre, on the other hand, hails from Burkina Faso; like Algerian Ali Salmi in ‘Transit’, the company examines the subject of the emigration of young Africans, while Germain and Patrick Acogny perform their vibrant and dynamic ‘Waxtaan’. The performances staged by Antillean choreographer Chantal Loïal examine the subject of metissage. Here with ‘Divers-cités Féminines’ and ‘Bal’ and ‘Défilé’, she will be bringing the party spirit for dancers and spectators alike to the streets of Rovereto. Mozart Festival, dedicated to rediscovering the musical and cultural heritage left by the Salzburg-born genius, has reached the twenty-year mark. As in the past, it is divided into music, theatre and cinema sections. Theatrical works include the opera ‘Don Giovanni’ staged by Prague’s Marionette National Theatre, a highly original event which appears alongside Carlo Goldoni’s play ‘Don Giovanni Tenorio’. Three hundred years on from Goldoni’s birth comes this performance of his work, taken from the same subject to which Mozart set his music. Don Giovanni is also the theme around which the musical section is developed, with the performance of new scores written by contemporary composers, not to mention the cinema section. The musical part sees the outstanding participation of Russian violinist Victoria Mullova, as well as the continuation of the collaboration with Bologna’s ‘2 Agosto’ International Composing Competition, and the ‘A. Toscanini’ Foundation Orchestra. The Palazzos that hosted Mozart in the Vallagarina have a date with chamber music performed by duo Marco Rogliano and Andrea Dindo (violin and piano), the Open Trios (piano, vocals and percussion), the Argentinean piano duo Hector Moreno and Norberto Capelli, and the string Quintet from Lisbon’s Superior Conservatory. The cinema section, on the other hand, will be given over to commenting and projecting ‘Mozart, Don Giovanni’ by director Peter Sellars. 42 9pm Trento, Teatro Sociale ORCHESTRA FONDAZIONE “A. Magnificent landscapes, rich in flora and fauna, are some of the outstanding features of the Park. The Park is the habitat of many animals that in the past populated the whole of the Alps: deer, roe deer, chamois, eagles, white grouse, capercaillie and in recent years the brown bears, reintroduced by the ‘Life Ursus’ project and now a symbol of the Park. The Rio Bianco Botanical Garden, close to the ancient castle of Stenico and some valley jewels like Val di Fumo, Val Genova and Val di Tóvel, as well as the Alpine glaciers of Adamello contribute in making the Park an irresistible destination for those who love nature. Visitors can purchase the ParcoCard to combine visits to the Park and provincial museums, plus tastings of local products. The geographical centre of the park comprises the Ortles-Cevedale mountain group. All around, countless Alpine valleys and ecosystems populated by endless plant and animal species cover over 130,000 hectares. The Park also features areas resulting from particular geomorphologic and weather conditions which have been colonised by man, whilst respecting the laws of nature and biological rhythms. The park sprawls out across the breadth of three provinces. The part that lies within Trentino includes the valleys of Peio and Rabbi, which are renowned for their centuries-old spas, not to mention the potential for nature and cultureoriented excursions and the countless mountain refuge huts. Located at an altitude of 1584 metres a.s.l., the village of Peio has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Studies carried out by the Park turned up traces of prehistoric man and rock carvings on large masses indicating the passing of hunting peoples during the Mesolithic period. The Val di Rabbi is a real Alpine gem; in the words of Aldo Gorfer, it is ‘the most Alpine of Trentino’s valleys’, and has not been scarred by man’s attempts to alter the landscape. The deer, seen at close quarters in the large area of the Paneveggio Visitor Centre, are the symbol of the whole Park, but the name of this area is known worldwide for the ‘resonant’ red fir trees that are particularly suitable for making musical instruments. There are three Visitor Centres in the area, which provide information on the organised initiatives, interesting exhibition itineraries to study particular subjects and the chance to purchase publications and material of naturalistic interest. Then there is the Ethnographic Trail, an outdoor museum linked by a network of paths winding through the village of Caoria, at an altitude of 845 metres, and Malga Miesnotta di Sopra, situated one thousand metres higher up.
