Caroline Gavazzi ha di recente partecipato all'iniziativa artistica/educativa promossa da Pinksie
(www.pinksie.com). Nel suo lavoro Caroline esplora il tema delle paure dei bambini ed il suo obbiettivo è quello di “stimolare un dialogo ed una introspezione” sulle proprie paure tra tutti gli
spettatori (fra adulti, fra bambini e fra gli adulti e i bambini). Caroline invita lo spettatore ad interagire fisicamente con l’immagine andando al di là di una semplice visione superficiale, al di là
delle apparenze.Lo spettatore viene invitato a sollevare il panno di mussola per svelare la paura
del bambino sotto celata. I bambini possono spesso avere vergogna delle proprie paure, preoccupati del giudizio degli amici, timorosi di innescare atti di bullismo o semplicemente di essere
giudicati. Anche gli adulti tendono a nascondere emozioni “scomode”. Possono essere vulnerabili, avere incertezze, ma cercano sovente di mascherarle piuttosto che averle esposte. Si nascondono dietro la propria facciata. Il risultato dell'atto di "smascherare" queste paure primordiali e'
estremamente interessante, giacche' alcuni spettatori provano un effetto quasi liberatorio, mentre altri ne traggono conforto, realizzando che tali paure sono spesso condivise fra le persone.
Così ne scaturisce, in modo naturale, "un dialogo" senza barriere difensive. Il panno di mussola
bianca ha un forte simbolismo per Caroline, in quanto rappresenta il panno utilizzato dai lattanti
per trarne conforto e senso di protezione. Andare al di la' delle apparenze e' un tema ricorrente
nelle opere di Caroline.
"Fear" e' stato realizzato alla De Beauvoir Primary School a Hackney, Londra nel 2014.
Caroline Gavazzi has recently participated to the educational art project Pinksie
(www.pinksie.com). Her project explores the theme of children’s fears and her aim is to “initiate
a conversation and an introspection” about fears among viewers (among adults, among children, and between adults and children). Caroline draws the viewer to interact directly with the
image, to go beyond a "simple","cursory" look, beyond appearances. The spectator is invited to
lift up the white muslin cloths to reveal the children’s fears hidden beneath. Children can often
be shy about their own fears, they can be worried about their friends’ judgment, afraid to be
bullied or misunderstood. Adults too, tend to hide “uncomfortable” feelings. They can be vulnerable, they have doubts, and often times try to “cover them up “ instead of being exposed. They
put on a “brave face” to the world. The result of “revealing” these primal fears is very interesting as some viewers find the experience "liberating" while others find "comfort" in realizing that
their fears are shared among people and the “conversation naturally takes place” without being
defensive about it. The white muslin cloth has a very symbolic meaning for Caroline as it represents the cloth typically used by toddlers as an object of comfort and protection. Going beyond
“appearances“ is a very recurring theme in Caroline’s work.

BIOGRAPHY
Caroline Gavazzi e’ una fotografa franco-italiana residente a Londra. All'eta' di 19 anni Caroline
lascia Milano per trasferirsi a Parigi dove studia alla Sorbona (tra ’91 ed il ‘94), si laurea in Geografia e Urbanistica. Durante i suoi studi Caroline si iscrive all' Istituto Fotografico Speos dove
sperimenta le diverse tecniche fotografiche e la stampa in B&N, e lavora come assistente allo
studio fotografico Astre. Nel 1995 Caroline si trasferisce a Londra e ottiene un Master in “Professional Photography Practice” al London College of Printing and Communication (LCC). Contemporaneamente lavora ancora come assistente in studi fotografici e per fotografi di moda ed interni come: Michael Thompson, Hiromasa, Jean-Jaque Castre e Martyn Thompson. Nel 1996
Caroline affina le sue esperienze fotografiche lavorando a tempo pieno come Picture Coordinator
nel dipartimento artistico di Vogue UK e nel 1997 come Picture Editor nella rivista di Harvey
Nichols. Durante questo periodo, nei ritagli di tempo, Caroline inizia a pubblicare le sue prime
foto in riviste inglesi e italiane. E’ a partire dal ’98 che Caroline si lancia a tempo pieno nella carriera di fotografa freelance e si specializza in interni, ritratti e natura morta. Le riviste con le
quali collabora sono numerose, per citarne alcune: Vogue UK, Vogue Spagna, House & Garden,
Tatler, Conde’ Nast Traveller, Elle, Country Living, ES Magazine, Sunday Times, D-La Repubblica
delle Donne. In parallelo alla sua carriera editoriale, Caroline ha sempre avidamente perseguito
una passione per la fotografia artistica, passione che l’ha portata alla creazione di numerose
serie fotografiche che ha esposto in gallerie a Londra, Parigi e Milano. Il suo lavoro personale
esplora spesso il tema dell'"apparenza", affrontandolo con molta delicatezza e sensibilita'.
Caroline Gavazzi is a Franco-Italian photographer based in London. At the age of 19 Caroline
leaves Milan to study in Paris where she graduates in Geography at the Sobonne University, in
1994. During her studies she starts to work as an assistant photographer for Studio Astre and
master the B&W printing techniques at Speos Photography School. In 1995 Caroline moves to
London and obtains an MA in Professional Photography Practice at the London Institute (LCC).
During this period she continues to assist a number of well-known photographers, including Michael Thompson, Hiromasa, Jean-Jacques Castre and Martyn Thompson. In 1996 Caroline starts
working full time as Picture Coordinator in the Art Department at Vogue UK and then as Picture
Editor at Harvey Nichols Magazine, in 1997. In 1998, Caroline gives up all other employments to
dedicate herself full-time as freelance photographer, focusing on commercial work (interiors, still
life and portraits) and publishes in many magazines including Vogue UK, Vogue Spain, House &
Garden, Tatler, Conde’ Nast Traveller, Elle, Country Living, ES Magazine, Sunday Times, D-La
Repubblica delle Donne, to mention few. In parallel to her commercial career, Caroline nourishes
her passion for artistic photography, leading to the production of several collections which have
been exhibited in London, Paris and Milan. Her work often explores with sensitivity and discretion the theme of "appearance".
