OCTOBER 23, 2011 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Dear Friends in Christ,
Cari amici in Cristo,
This Sunday at the 10:15 Mass, the parish has the opportunity to witness the rite of installation of a pastor; in this case,
my installation as the tenth pastor of the Church of St. Rocco.
The Mass starts with a greeting from the celebrant. However,
today, the celebrant is a guest, namely, Father Bob Romeo,
Pastor of St. Boniface in Sea Cliff, and our Dean. In the name
of His Excellency, Bishop Murphy, the Dean presents the Pastor to his parish (Of course, I have already been here for four
months, so I am no longer new to you, but, let’s go with it anyway). After the Dean has explained to the parish that the
Bishop has carefully chosen the new Pastor, the parish welcomes the new Pastor with their applauses.
Then the Dean presents the Pastor’s co-workers. First, he
introduces the clergy who help us at St. Rocco. Thanks to
Msgr. Vaccari’s help, Fr. Daniel and Fr. Bruno are able to be
here because Msgr. Vaccari is offering the Mass at St. Patrick’s
this morning. Then, Fr. Romeo presents in sequence the parish
staff, the Parish Council and the Trustees, who each greet the
new pastor. With a final word of encouragement, Fr. Romeo
relinquishes the role of celebrant and hands over the rest of the
Mass to the Pastor.
One final element follows the homily. The people, with
their newly installed Pastor, make the Profession of Faith.
Then, the Pastor, alone and publicly, takes the Oath of Fidelity
(which is printed on page 5 in today’s Bulletin). With this, he
promises to teach the Catholic Faith, and not his own opinions,
and to maintain communion with the Pope and the Bishops.
Then, on the altar, he signs the Oath.
For me, this solemn moment recalls St. Paul’s Letter to the
Romans, 12:1-2: “I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and
pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your
mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is
good and pleasing and perfect.”
The Pastor as a chaste celibate man has offered his body as
a living sacrifice to God and as his spiritual (or rational) worship. His vocation is clearly at odds with this age and its dominant culture of self-gratification, mutual exploitation and reckless consumption. His call as a pastor is the renewal of his mind
and the minds of his people. Together, therefore, we strive to
discern the Will of God, that is, all that is good, pleasing and
perfect.
It is my delight to be your pastor, and, I hope, for you, to be
my people. I give thanks to God that he has allowed me to
come to St. Rocco’s. And I pray that together we may indeed
grow in faith, hope and love as we worship together in the
years to come.
Questa Domenica alla Messa delle 10:15, la parrocchia ha
la possibilità di assistere al rito dell' installazione di un pastore;
in questo caso, la mia installazione come il decimo pastore
della Chiesa di San Rocco. La Messa inizia con un saluto del
celebrante. Però oggi, il celebrante è un ospite, vale a dire,
Padre Bob Romeo, parroco di San Bonifacio di Sea Cliff, e il
nostro Decano. In nome di Sua Eccellenza, Mons. Murphy, il
Decano presenta il pastore nella sua parrocchia (Naturalmente,
io sono già qui per quattro mesi, quindi non sono più una novità
per voi, ma, andiamo con esso in ogni caso). Dopo che il
Decano ha spiegato alla parrocchia che il Vescovo ha scelto con
cura il nuovo parroco, la parrocchia accoglie con favore il
nuovo parroco con i loro applausi.
Poi il Decano presenta i collaboratori del parocco. Primo di
tutto, introduce il clero che ci aiutano. Grazie all'aiuto di Mons.
Vaccari, Don Daniele e Don Bruno possono partecipare oggi.
Successivamente Padre Romeo presenta in sequenza il
personale della parrocchia, il Consiglio Parrocchiale e gli
Amministratori, che salutano il nuovo parroco. Con una parola
finale d'incoraggiamento, Padre Romeo cede il ruolo di
celebrante ed il nuovo parroco presiede per il resto della Messa.
Un ultimo aspetto segue l'omelia. Il popolo, con il loro
parroco installato recentemente, fa la Professione di Fede. Poi, il
parroco, solo e pubblicamente, prende il Giuramento di Fedeltà
(che è stampato nella pagina 5 nel Bollettino di oggi). Con
questo, egli promette di insegnare la fede cattolica, e non le
proprie opinioni, e per mantenere la comunione con il Papa e i
Vescovi. Poi, sull'altare, firma il Giuramento.
Per me, questo momento solenne ricorda la Lettera di San
Paolo apostolo ai Romani, 12,1-2 : «Vi esorto dunque, fratelli,
per la misericordia di Dio, a presentare i vostri corpi in
sacrificio vivente, santo, gradito a Dio; questo è il vostro culto
spirituale. Non conformatevi a questo mondo, ma siate
trasformati mediante il rinnovamento della vostra mente,
affinché conosciate per esperienza quale sia la volontà di Dio,
la buona, gradita e perfetta volontà.»
Il parroco come un uomo casto celibato ha offerto il suo
corpo come sacrificio vivente a Dio e come il suo spirituale (o
razionale) culto. La sua vocazione è chiaramente in contrasto
con questo mondo e la sua cultura dominante di
autogratificazione, di sfruttamento reciproco e il consumo
sconsiderato. La sua vocazione come parroco è il rinnovamento
della sua mente e le menti del suo popolo. Insieme, dunque,
cerchiamo di discernere la volontà di Dio, cioè, tutto ciò che è
buono, gradito e perfetto.
È la mia gioia di essere il vostro parroco, e spero, per voi, è
una gioia di essere il mio popolo. Ringrazio Dio che mi ha
permesso di venire a San Rocco. E prego che insieme possiamo
davvero crescere nella fede, speranza e amore come noi
adoriamo insieme negli anni a venire.
