Nel 2009 ha ricevuto l’Outstanding Merit Award per il retail design T he basic criterion all retailers follow when opening a new sales outlet is location, and rightly so. Yet the trade itself always has a surprise or two up its sleeve and The Market, one of the latest formats in the orbit of the multinational giant Supervalu, is certainly one. Situated at the edge of pine and birch woodland a few miles from the suburban towns dotting the area around Plymouth, the new supermarket 54 Fresh Point Magazine n.10 – october/ottobre 2012 I l criterio fondamentale dei nostri retailer per l’apertura di un punto di vendita è, giustamente, la sua location. A friendly atmosphere Set within a scenic beauty of meadows and woodland, The Market gives visitors the impression of time flowing in slow motion, transmitting a relaxing sensation that goes hand in hand with an intelligent, gentle, unhurried shopping experience. The Market’s staff is both highly qualified and more than willing to share tips and listen to customers, an approach that rightly emphasises a friendly, familiar atmosphere combining competence and a warm welcome. The result is reminiscent of the idealised neighbourhood supermarket of the 1950s with all the conveniences and innovations of today. The Market’s white façade with its four windows underscores the building’s three-wing structure. The central body, which is deliberately raised, is studied not only to provide local air circulation, which is boosted by a large central ceiling fan, but also natural lighting from the side windows that punctuate the length of the central area. Hanging from the middle of the façade is the company’s red apple logo. Along one side of the building one finds Long Ridge’s Wine & Spirits, an annex of the supermarket that offers a notable assortment of national and international alcoholic beverages. The Market is situated at the edge of a pine and birch wood a few miles from the suburban towns dotting the area around Plymouth. Fresh Point Magazine n.10 – october/ottobre 2012 55 isr/The Market (Usa) gdo/The Market (Usa) challenges this cardinal rule of modern retailing and has become an archetype that, by going against the local tide in this are of Massachusetts, is right at home in the thick of the American vigorous spread of the so-called small, highly specialised neighbourhood supermarkets. The area it serves is a real pleasure to be in because of its gracefully placid environment, an asset that, as a consequence, seemingly helps it overcome the apparent disadvantage of its out-of-the-way location. The town of Pinehills has obviously been enthusiastic in welcoming this “farmer’s market” style outlet. Indeed, it is so new and such attention has been given to even the smallest detail of décor that it really seems to be one of those old-fashioned, neighbourly grocery shops that perfectly mirror its rural setting. This is why The Market received the 2009 Outstanding Merit Award of the Association of Retail Environments, an authoritative trade group that rewards excellence in retail design. The store’s underlying style concept is the old barn refurbished as a local market. As the roam the aisles, the shoppers from the surrounding middle-class towns, including Plymouth itself, find a broad array of elaborately prepared specialty foods and beckoning sensory pleasures that converge in a philosophy of food focused on health and sophistication. All these ingredients are part of a design to create the ‘perfect’ small-format grocery store in a ‘nearperfect’ place. isr/The Market (Usa) gdo/The Market (Usa) recalls an old-fashioned shop when you see the front portico with several rocking chairs, a touch that, again, underscores the relaxed atmosphere of the place. One then walks in to a pastel-coloured interior displaying in apparent haphazard fashion several thousand wines of excellent labels, including many from Italy and other countries in Europe. Customer response Customer relations are without doubt The Market’s forte. Indeed, so strong is the bond that the delicatessen department is also ready to prepare meals to order, with recipes to fit every taste. This is just one of the many ways that The Market’s staff encourages customers to take advantage of the services being offered and gradually planned to expand through the efficiency of staff at the other end of the e-mail address and attractive web site. Michael Szathmary, managing director of The Market, has a proud 40-year experience in the supermarket business and carefully hand-picked his staff, including chef Dane Axon, who oversees the sophisticated Prepared Foods department whose ready items are almost all made on the premises. The foods on sale at The Market have maximum freshness as their distinctive mark. Here’s a sampling: the Butcher has a fine selection of marbled La sua facciata bianca, in cui si aprono quattro finestre, enfatizza la struttura a tre volumi dell’edificio. Long Ridge, the wine-cellar annex of the supermarket offers a wide variety of domestic and imported alcoholic beverages. Angus beef for connoisseurs, produce offers a large variety of fresh-cut and ready-to-prepare produce, an assortment of several hundred chesses from the world over, fresh fish and seafood from the nearby Atlantic, and special breads baked on the spot. Then there’s a big gazebo in the area in front of the main entrance that hosts locally grown seasonal produce, preserves and local bakery products. Given its special retail strategy, The Market naturally has to counter the idea that its prices are high. However, since it’s part of Supervalu’s group, it manages to retain an edge in 40% of its annual turnover, which is all general groceries. Its real profit margins, which are considerable, come from fresh perishables, a sector where it’s unrivalled at the moment. As is the norm in the Unites States, the company puts a lot of emphasis on local foods, though without all our European fuss over zero-kilometres. Rural architecture The Market’s floor space covers nearly 1,500 metres, all departments included. While the layout plays more to architecture than to decor, the atmosphere this creates is rendered more vivid still by such small touches as potted plants on windowsills in a style reminiscent of a bygone New England. Most of the interior décor is in hardwood, which is mirrored in the ceiling colour and wall panelling. The idea is to provide the look and feel of a rural architecture redolent of the pioneer roots of the Pilgrim Fathers who disembarked from the Mayflower in 1620 at nearby Plymouth. The haylofts, beams and other structural elements are also in aged oak wood. The apparently worn flooring features warm shades of old leather. The department signs are in burnished metal to look oldfashioned, adding a refined touch of sophistication. Noteworthy too is the low-ceilinged and pronounced lighting of the cheese and butcher departments with 58 Fresh Point Magazine n.10 – october/ottobre 2012 vizio di e-mail e un bel sito Internet. Il materiale pre- The vast assortment of fresh-cut and ready-to-prepare produce is grown locally. The Cheese department offers several hundred items from all over the world. Nel supermercato si può trovare un assortimento di alcune centinaia di formaggi di tutte le provenienze. their white tiled walls reminiscent of old underground stations. The grocery department’s gondolas are set sideways in an asymmetrical pattern that encourages customers to explore semi-guided paths, a way to give shoppers the impression of discovering something new. The Market’s opening was preceded by a smart advertising campaign that in the end added up to a 6-page spread in the Boston Globe and ably captured the sound-bites of visiting celebrities like the late cookery writer Katie Wilton and Olympic gymnast Alicia Sacramone. This approach has provided exceptionally coherent echoes in a series of continuing events that act as a magnet for residents of the surrounding communities. In July of this year, for example, The Market hosted music groups as part of its “Dinner and Music” event, the featured bands playing country-western and suppers being served from The Market’s Prepared Foods department. When all is said and done, The Market is surely a most interesting and instructive case for anyone who wants to take full measure of the farmer’s market concept, or the idea of the specialised neighbourhood supermarket. It might even be worth a trip to Massachusetts. Fresh Point Magazine n.10 – october/ottobre 2012 59
