Balanced between coherence and obsession, Yvoré’s work emerges from an in-depth research on the status of painting. Starting from the memory of ordinary and mundane things, the artist creates an opaque universe of still lifes, an airtight world with no vanishing point made of vases, bowls, jugs, room corners and ceilings. The spectator’s gaze becomes entangled in the thick impasto of paint laid on the canvas layer after layer, the brush drenched with color to such an extent that the figure-ground distinction turns unstable and the whole image vibrates with a life of its own. This understanding of color as plastic material descends from the artist’s will to go “as far as the boundary beyond which everything flips over into a complete mess.” Yvoré’s paintings form a sequence of nondescript forms and spaces. Their somber hues and the absence of depth remind Giorgio Morandi’s paintings yet they appear rather parched, drained from the existential glow that characterizes the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Villa Croce via Jacopo Ruffini 3, 16128 Genova t +39 010 580069/585772 [email protected] Bolognese master’s style. Yvoré’s work is also remarkable for the apparent absence of a direct relationship to the present: from the selection of the subjects represented – impossible to place in time – to the medium used – painting on a reduced, non-spectacular scale -, with the latter undergoing several up and downs in the developments of contemporary art. In the artist’s words: “getting rid of elements eliminates the clues that indicate the nature of the painted figures, and my broader gesture produces more immediate figures without details or stories. What interests me is the concrete unity of the painting, rather than the representation of an image”. The exhibition is accompanied by the catalogue Cristof Yvoré published by Roma Publications, (Antwerp), produced in collaboration with the FRAC PACA Marseilles thanks to the support of ZENO X Gallery (Antwerp).
