TO WISH
TO WISH L’uso del verbo to wish (desiderare) presuppone una maggiore formalità rispetto a would like e want. E’ sempre seguito da un verbo all’infinito o dal complemento oggetto + infinito. Esempio: Mr White wishes to meet you soon. ( Mr White desidere incontrarla adesso.). Esempio: What do you wish me to do? (Che cosa vuoi che faccia?). Wish inoltre, viene usato nelle seguenti strutture: Wish + soggetto + past tense/could, per esprimere desiderio irrealizzabile nel presente. Esempio: I wish you were here. ( Vorrei che tu fossi qui.). Esempio: He wishes he knew how to do it. (Vorrebbe saperlo fare.). Esempio: I wish I had a car. ( Vorrei avere un’auto nuova.). Esempio: I wish I could help you. ( Vorrei poterti aiutare.). Wish + soggetto + past perfect/could have + participio passato per esprimere desiderio irrealizzabile nel passato ( è suggerita l’idea di rimpianto, rimorso); Esempio: I wish I hadn’t broken it. ( Vorrei non averlo rotto.). Esempio: I wish I had never seen her. ( Vorrei non averla mai vista.). Wish + soggetto + would per esprimere desiderio che qualcosa accada o cambi in futuro. Esempio: I wish you would tidy that room. ( Vorrei che mettessi in ordine quella stanza.). Esempio: I wish you wouldn’t waste your time. ( Vorrei che non sprecassi il tuo tempo.). Wish è anche usato per esprimere augurio. Esempio: I wish you a Merry Christmas. (Auguri di buon Natale.). L’espressione if only ha lo stesso significato di wish, quando esprime rimpianto. Esempio: If only George would answer my letter. ( Se soltanto George rispondesse alla mia lettera.). ESERCIZIO Scrivi cosa le persone che esprimono regret potrebbero dire nelle seguenti situazioni.
