El Alamein
“And yet, in Libya there were also heroes, candid, human, soldier
heroes,
who did not abandon their friends, who died for nothing and knew it.
A pure gesture, no ideal if not that of human kindness, reflected in the
mirror of destiny. Some were heroes without a blaze. They also saw
what a man without a homeland, vilified and afflicted for twenty years
by a brutish tyranny, could give, and yet still retain some human
kindness.
When faced with death, diminishing hate, and being men that have a
destiny, and only that. A noble soldier without a flag; there is nothing
sadder; for a flag cannot be made.
And yet there were heroes.
Mario Tobino, Il deserto della Libia
El Alamein
FROM THE SCREENPLAY
COMMAND POST – ext. day
An Italian flag, sun-bleached and reduced to tatters by the wind, waves lazily in the
breeze.
The companies of the 2nd battalion, the 28th regiment of the “Pavia” infantry division
are stationed at the southernmost area of the front in Naq Rala, at the very edge of
the Qattara depression.
The landscape is immense and primordial: an arid expanse of boulders, stones, sand
and rock. And below this is the vast depression of a dried out sea where
temperatures soar to unbearable levels.
The command post comprises a tent, dry-stone walls, and camouflaged shelters
erected against a ridge of rock. The long months at the front line have left their mark
on the men with their sunburned faces, long beards and undernourished appearance.
In their tattered uniforms they look more like tramps than a military command. (…)
OUTPOST – ext. day
The Novara Outpost is of the “Alamein” type, arranged in a triangle.
There is a look-out post in each of the three corners equipped with a Breda 37
machine gun. In a slightly elevated position in the middle stands an anti-tank gun.
The posts are connected to each other by communication trenches. In front of them
are barbed wire barriers that mark off the minefields. Beyond the minefields lies noman’s-land scattered with the sculptural wreckage of destroyed burnt-out vehicles,
the scene of night-time incursions. (…)
SERRA (voice off)
Beloved Mom, Dear Father, I didn’t think such places existed.
We are camped at the southernmost part of the front overlooking the Qattara depression. It is
vast and empty. I have not yet seen anything of the war.
I thought it would be different.
Goodness knows what I expected: engagements, battles, shooting.
But here the men die unexpectedly, randomly, without knowing why,
without ever seeing the enemy.
I hope to have a chance to excel in battle here and that you
may be proud of me.
The “Pavia” soldiers are working in squads of 8/9 men digging the trenches; they are
on the alert for the movements of an enemy they can’t see but know is there. They
each have their own way of dealing with the problem of surviving in such a hellhole. (…)
Protected by a rocky outcrop, 5/6 soldiers are squatting bare-assed, their trousers
round their ankles, all suffering the terrible effects of dysentery. They have shovels at
their sides. When they have finished, they shovel sand into the hole to cover it and
go back to their duties. (…)
LIAISON AREA – ext. day
The sun is high in the sky. Two wounded soldiers are lying moaning abandoned on
the sand. The other stretcher bearer has found some shade behind the wrecked jeep:
he is afraid and sweating. No movement or sound comes from the rusty wreckage of
the British tank: there is no sign of life. The men in their foxholes are tense: watching,
waiting, and sweating. (…)

ENZO MONTELEONE
(director and screenplay writer)
Enzo Monteleone was born in Padua. His involvement with the film world dates
from his university days when he was the manager of the Centro Universitario
Cinematografico and the CinemaUno film club of Padua. He also worked for the
Venice local authority cinema circuit, Circuito Cinema, writing reviews and
monographs on Blake Edwards, Ken Russell and Werner Herzog. He also
contributed to the 50th anniversary retrospective of the Cinema Biennale. In 1980 he
took part in the production of Vagabondi by Carlo Mazzacurati, a 16mm film that
won a prize at the Film-Maker festival in Milan.
In 1982 he moved to Rome where he served his years of apprenticeship: he wrote
press-books for film production companies, made a film programme for television,
wrote the Italian dialogues for Nightmare, was assistant director on a TV movie in the
Amazon.
In 1986 his first screenplay was made into a film: Hotel Colonial, an Italo-American coproduction with Robert Duvall, John Savage, Rachel Ward and Massimo Troisi,
directed by Cinzia Th. Torrini.
He then went on to establish a close working relationship with Gabriele Salvatores
for whom he wrote the screenplays for four films: Kamikazen, Marrakech Express,
Mediterraneo (Oscar in 1992 for the best foreign film) and Puerto Escondido, a boxoffice hit in 1992-1993.
He has worked as a screenplay writer with some of the best new young directors: Il
prete bello for Mazzacurati, Ask for the Moon for Piccioni, Red American for D’Alatri,
and Off to the Revolution in a 2CV (winner of the Locarno Festival 2001) for Sciarra.
Before moving on to directing he wrote the screenplay for Spanish director Carlos
Saura’s Dispara! Outrage, starring Antonio Banderas and Francesca Neri, shown at
the Venice Film Festival in 1993.
In 1994 he made his directorial debut with The True Life of Antonio H., a tragicomic
bio-pic of actor Alessandro Haber (winner of the Nastro d’Argento award for best
leading actor).
In 1999 he directed his second film: Ormai è fatta!,starring Stefano Accorsi. The film
was in competition at the Moscow Film Festival, received four nominations for the
David di Donatello awards and won the European Cinema d’Essai Federation prize
at the Annecy Film Festival. For his performance, Stefano Accorsi won the “Grolla
d’Oro” as Best Actor.

EMILIO SOLFRIZZI
(Lieutenant Fiore)
Emilio Solfrizzi was born in Bari in 1962, and got himself an arts degree before
joining up with Antonio Stornaiolo (Tata) in 1985 to form the performing duo “Toti
and Tata”. They founded the cabaret theatre “La dolce vita”, the success of which
was assured by the hilarious shows put on by this comic duo from Puglia, also
attracting many other performers on the national circuit. He has recently played the
lead role in two television series of Sei forte maestro, in addition to the sparkling
comedy for the cinema, Se fosse in te.
