Villa Farnesina

La Villa Farnesina a Roma è una delle più nobili e armoniose realizzazioni del Rinascimento italiano. Fu commissionata agli inizi del ´500 dal banchiere senese Agostino Chigi all’architetto Baldassarre Peruzzi e fu affrescata da Raffaello, Sebastiano del Piombo, Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, detto il Sodoma, e dallo stesso Peruzzi. Alla fine del ´500 fu acquistata dal cardinale Alessandro Farnese, da cui viene il nome di Farnesina, per distinguerla dal Palazzo Farnese, al di là del Tevere. At the beginning of the sixteenth century, it was commissioned by the Sienese banker Agostino Chigi to the architect Baldassarre Peruzzi. The interior is decorated with frescoes by Raphael, Sebastiano del Piombo, Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, known as Sodoma, and Peruzzi himself. At the end of the sixteenth century the Villa was purchased by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese from whom it takes its name “Farnesina” to distinguish it from Palazzo Farnese on the other side of the Tiber. The Villa is also used for official representative purposes by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Altri affreschi del Peruzzi e di Sebastiano del Piombo. La Stanza delle Nozze di Alessandro Magno e Roxane, affrescata dal Sodoma, era la camera da letto di Agostino Chigi (1519). La Loggia di Amore e Psiche – particolare della volta ‐ prende il nome dagli affreschi dipinti da Raffaello e bottega (1518). The Room of the Marriage of Alexander the Great and Roxane, frescoed by the painter Sodoma, was originally Agostino Chigi’s bedroom (1519).
