Italy : Christmas 2009 - Sr. M. Antonieta Bruscato, FSP Superior General (12-24-2009)
Dearest Sisters and young women in formation,
Together, we lived Advent in the light of the prophetic word, “Arise!”–a word that is
guiding the journey of redesigning our presences and which also sustained us as we
awaited the One who continues to be born in human history. God comes–this is the good
news for contemporary humanity, overwhelmed by the many cares of life. God comes to
rekindle our hope, which had dwindled almost to the vanishing point. God comes, wrapped
in the “swaddling clothes” of weakness and poverty, the new symbols of his divine omnipotence, the school
in which “Jesus teaches his first lessons: that of extreme poverty and love…” (Fr. Alberione).
This Christmas, I want to join our Founder in inviting you to “spiritually enter the stable of Bethlehem”
to the beat of three powerful and dynamic verbs: to walk, to contemplate and to rejoice.
To walk to Bethlehem quickly and without digressing, like the shepherds. There we will find Mary,
Joseph and “a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger” (Lk. 2:12). This tender Child
radiates a light that banishes the darkness of the world, a balm that heals the wounds of human beings, a
hope that penetrates the deep crevices of confusion and crisis. Enlightened by this Child, we can
communicate with our brothers and sisters as messengers of a miracle (“Today in the city of David a savior
has been born to you”), as witnesses to everything we have seen and heard.
To contemplate the goodness and love of God who has appeared among us (cf. Titus 3:4) in his
Word-made-flesh. God, who is completely “Other” and thus inaccessible, was born of a woman. He became
one of us so as to share the daily life of human beings. He is present in our concrete words and actions. Let
us contemplate at length this Child and the mystery that surrounds him because it is the same mystery that
surrounds us. In him, let us contemplate the face of the Father and his infinite love for us and for the people
of all times. Let us allow ourselves to be profoundly transformed by this love, which demolishes every barrier
and conquers death in all its forms.
To rejoice because “a Child has been born for us, a son given to us” (Is. 9:6). Let us rejoice because
God is with us: Emmanuel–every human being’s hope of life and love. Let us rejoice because of the marvels
he continues to accomplish in our lives and, through us, in the midst of humanity. And let us proclaim with
renewed exultation: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to all people, whom he loves.” This is
the real reason for our joy at Christmas: the Lord loves us. He is on our side. He shares our limitations and
our unquenchable longing for life and happiness.
So whether it be in the heart of the night or in the full light of day, let us head toward Bethlehem
together with all humanity. And in contemplating the infinite love of this God-Child, may we silently discover
the secret of true joy, like Mary, who “treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart” (Lk. 2:19).
This Christmas may Mary herself give us Jesus, in the spirit of the beautiful best wishes Fr.
Alberione offered Prima Maestra Thecla way back in 1946:
“Today, may our Queen and Mother give you Baby Jesus, thus fulfilling her apostolate. May she
place him in your arms and heart. Never allow yourself to be separated from him. Carry him with you every
day with ever-growing love.”
A Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you! Affectionately,
Sr. M. Antonieta Bruscato
Superior General

United States : Peace on Earth Concerts by the St. Paul Choir (24/12/2009)
During Advent, ten sisters from the St. Paul Choir of the United States went “on the
road” for a series of concerts on the theme “Peace on Earth.” What started out as a
one simple offering of seasonal songs and hymns at a parish church in New York has
become a two-week tour with concerts and displays of Pauline editions in eight cities
across six different states. For many people, these musical presentations have
become a treasured tradition.
Our sisters’ music has been featured through various forms of media: TV, video clips, radio, newspapers,
interviews, etc. The annual FSP Christmas Concert is proving to be an always-more significant way of
reaching thousands of people with the Christmas message through music and song. The music apostolate is
not new in the U.S. Province. Since 1987, the FSP choir has released 27 albums. This past summer, while
recording two more albums (scheduled for release in 2010 and 2011), the sisters also promoted their own
page on Facebook and invited on-line family and friends to become “fans” of the Daughters of St. Paul Choir.
During the recording session, the number of fans rose from 150 to over 3,000. They were very appreciative
of the sample music clips and many photos posted. Those interested can view photos and videos of this
year’s Christmas Concert and follow the progress of our sisters’ music apostolate through their Facebook
page: www.facebook.com/DSPchoir .
Japan : Meetings for Apostolic Coordinators of the Pauline Family (23/12/2009)
Maranatha! Come, Lord!
This was the invitation that accompanied Avanti!–the first Information Bulletin of those
in charge of the Pauline apostolate in Japan. The name of the bulletin is meant to
indicate not only dynamic movement but also a sense of commitment and
responsibility. Two members of each Institute of the Pauline Family in Japan–SSP,
FSP, PDDM–will meet periodically to facilitate collaboration for special events and for the daily exercise of
the apostolate.
These meetings, which were deeply desired by the provincial superiors of the respective Institutes, aim to
strengthen the Pauline mission and the witness of the PF to Jesus Master Way, Truth and Life in the Church
and society through the instruments of communication. Their next meeting has been planned to coincide with
a very significant event: World Communications Day, which will be celebrated on 9 May 2010.
To celebrate this very important occasion well, “everyone must work in harmony, like musicians who work
together to produce a beautiful symphony. […] All together, we must prepare the bread of the spirit and of
the truth” (J. Alberione, UPS I, 288).
India : Mumbai - Festival of the Word of God (23/12/2009)
Under the guidance of their mistress of formation, the FSP novices of Mumbai
organized and held a Bible Week in the parish of Kandivili. The initiative opened on
29th November and culminated in a Festival of the Word of God on 5th December
2009. During the week, the novices visited almost all the Catholic families of the
parish and found the people very welcoming and hospitable. At each home, they
prayed together with the family members, ensured that every household had a Bible and held a small
enthronement ceremony for the Word of God.
The program of the week included events for different groups of people: children, youth, and senior citizens.
Conferences were conducted by priests and our own sisters on themes such as: Proclamation of the Word of
God in the Media Age, Eucharist and Reconciliation, Mary Our Model for Living the Word of God, etc. Other
activities included a film session for children (attended by about 300 young people), a musical evening for
senior citizens, and a puppet show on a Biblical theme. The people were very appreciative of the entire
program and the novices say that the feedback they received was very encouraging.

Korea : “Jacob’s Well” - a Magazine that Explores the Word (22/12/2009)
Our sisters of Korea usually hold a Bible Week to conclude the Liturgical Year. This
year, they took advantage of the occasion to promote their biblical magazine,
“Jacob’s Well,” a periodical designed to help people meditate on the Liturgy of the
Word and apply it to daily life. A “traveling companion” for busy people who would
nevertheless like to get to know the Word and use it for prayer, the magazine offers
articles for deeper reflection, study and prayer on the Liturgy of the day.
The modest price of the periodical facilitates its diffusion among the poorer classes and encourages
missionaries and soldiers stationed overseas to subscribe to it. Thus welcomed and explained, the Word of
God is transformed into a spring of living water that gushes forth each day to slake the thirst of all those who
approach it.
Romania : Bucharest - FSP Presence at the International Book Fair (10/12/2009)
The FSPs of Romania joyfully opened Advent by participating for the first time in
Bucharest’s annual International Book Fair, held this year from 25-29 November 2009.
The event offered them a favorable opportunity to also present their two latest
publications.
The first of these, Depasind Depresia (Surviving Depression), by Sr. Kathryn James
Hermes, an American Daughter of St. Paul, offers readers a fresh and reassuring
approach to living through even the darkest times of life. Present for the occasion was
the translator of the book, Ms. Liana Ghel, a Doctor of Philology and a professor at the Theological
University of Bucharest, and also Ms. Luica Iorga, a psychologist and psychotherapist with extensive
experience.
The second title, the children’s book, Biblia Mea (My Bible), was also welcomed with great enthusiasm by
everyone. Even though the book was officially launched by Fr. Ioan Riba, vice-principal of St. Joseph
Catholic School in Bucharest, it was really a group of local children who presented this “most important book
in the world” to the public through a play that was very well received by an appreciative audience of
teachers, parents, friends and collaborators.
Also present “behind the scenes” for the occasion was His Excellency Ioan Robu, Archbishop of Bucharest.
Our sisters tell us that the Fair and book launching was the first step in a new area of the apostolate for
them, and the eager response of the people has made them more certain than ever of the need for the
Pauline mission in Romania.
United States : Pauline Cooperators (10/12/2009)
In the past few months, the Pauline Cooperators in the United States have lived
important moments. At the beginning of October Dr. Jeffrey Mathews of St. Louis,
Missouri, made his Promise in the Association of Pauline Cooperators. Dr Mathews,
who is married and has five children, is a physician (gastroenterologist). He keeps a
blog (http://loveofstpaul.blogspot.com/) in which he expresses his deep understanding
of the Pauline Spirituality and his love of the Pauline Family.
On the weekend of the Feast of the Divine Master, our sisters held a retreat for some of their local
Cooperators at St. Thecla Retreat House near Boston, Massachusetts. The participants came from a variety
of backgrounds: some are involved in their parishes; two are university professors, one is a young actress,
and one works at the United Nations in New York. For the retreat, our sisters provided some presentations,
an hour of adoration and scripture reflections. At the end of the weekend, a Holy Family couple renewed
their vows and the Cooperators renewed their Promise.
The following are two of the many notes of gratitude the sisters later received: “Just wanted to say “thank
you” again for the beautiful weekend. The theme, prayers, meditations, etc., helped me spiritually and it is
always so nice to get together with other cooperators and share stories, experiences, etc. Thank you also for
inviting us to Mass and the delicious lunch at your Motherhouse!”
“The retreat was exactly what I needed! It was very encouraging for me. Every time I go on retreat with the
Pauline Family, the words ‘Do not be afraid’ really speak to my heart and challenge me to step out in my
work with new courage!”

Italy : Rome - 20th Anniversary of Our FSP Multimedia Center (09/12/2009)
The St. Paul Multimedia Center on Via Mascherino, Rome, was opened on 10 Sept.
1989.
For years, the Daughters of St. Paul had yearned to serve the Church in the heart of
Rome–a dream that was realized with the inauguration of this International Center,
which is just 200 meters (about 600 ft.) from St. Peter’s Basilica. Because of its
location, in the past 20 years the Center has become adept at “speaking” a multitude
of languages. In fact, it welcomes people from all the world’s continents, providing them with material and
instruments not only for their personal spiritual enrichment and growth but also to help them carry out their
pastoral activities in every corner of the planet.
Today, it is not uncommon to meet bishops, priests, religious and laity in distant countries and cities who
have visited our St. Paul Multimedia Center in Rome and returned home with very positive impressions of
the FSPs and their mission in the Church. To thank the Lord for the many apostolic activities he has
facilitated from this modern Pauline “pulpit” over the past two decades and so as to begin the new decade
with renewed enthusiasm and responsibility, our sisters had a special Mass celebrated in the Media Center
on its anniversary. Besides the FSPs, the commemorative Liturgy was attended by the Center’s lay
employees and their families, plus many friends and collaborators. As for the future? Onward, Daughters of
St. Paul! Ever onward! (Blessed James Alberione)
Brazil : Maringa - Celebrating Grandparents Day with Gratitude (07/12/2009)
To remind everyone of how important grandparents are to the human family, the FSP
Book Center of Maringa collaborated with the Diocesan Pastoral Office for Senior
Citizens to promote the celebration of Grandparents Day, which publicly lauds the
significant educational and affective contributions of the elderly to the family and
society.
With their wealth of knowledge and experience, grandparents represent an importance
point of reference for the younger generations, offering them a valuable heritage of wisdom on which to
draw. Aided by Beraldo Adriana Santana, who served as a consultant for the Day, our sisters organized a
number of activities, including several workshops on themes such as self esteem, the yearning for the divine,
and the spirituality of elderly people.
The idea of a national day dedicated to grandparents was proposed in 1970 by Marian McQuade, a
homemaker from West Virginia, USA, who died last year at the age of 91. She is survived by 15 children, 43
grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Peru : Lima - New FSP Book Center in the Heart of the City (04/12/2009)
To The FSPs of Peru have opened a new Pauline Book Center in the San Isidro
district of Lima–a densely-populated seaside area that includes a university as well as
many banks and international companies, making it a strategic location on the
commercial, cultural and economic levels.
With more than 7,000 titles to offer the public, our sisters’ large, well-lit and tastefully
furnished new locale is sure to be a significant religious and cultural point of reference
for the people of this busy zone. The book center will be run by a team of well-prepared lay people, who
have earned the trust and esteem of everyone. In 2010, the Daughters of St. Paul will celebrate their 50th
anniversary of foundation in Peru. The inauguration of the Lima Book Center opens the festivities for this
important stage of our Pauline journey in Latin America.
Italy : Rome- Study as a “Trip”: Interview with Sr. Triphonia Kim (03/12/2009)
Earlier this year, Sr. Triphonia Kim, an FSP from South Korea, obtained a Baccalaureate
Degree from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. We asked her to describe, in
terms of an icon, the dissertation that concluded her five years of intensive study: The Holy
Spirit in the Theology of Irenaeus of Lyons.
How would you describe your dissertation?
It was like an interior and exterior trip. That image comes readily to mind because I enjoy
4
traveling. It is a way to encounter new worlds and discover fresh aspects of my own personality. On a trip, a
person experiences joys, surprises, problems, dangerous situations, challenges, etc. All this can enrich an
individual and help her/him grow.
For me, writing my dissertation was like taking a trip. It was like “traveling” in the world of the Holy Spirit in
the company of St. Irenaeus.
Who is Irenaeus and why is he so important in the history of the Church?
Irenaeus was the first Christian theologian to write an overall synthesis of Christianity. He was born in
Smyrna, Turkey, raised in a Christian family, and received a sound formation in religion, philosophy and
theology. St. Polycarp, a disciple of John the Evangelist, had a direct influence on the thought and works of
Irenaeus. The two men witness to the apostolic tradition, which at that time was fighting many different
heresies, especially Gnosticism, which Irenaeus strongly opposed.
From what perspective did you examine the pastoral work of Irenaeus?
Since Irenaeus was involved in combating heresy, his theology is closely bound to the pastoral needs of his
time. I thought it would be interesting to parallel his thought to the thought of Gnosticism. Thus three of the
four chapters of my dissertation discuss these contrasts. Each of the three chapters consists of two parts:
the Gnostic perspective and then, in parallel, the perspective of Irenaeus, who points out the errors of this
heresy.
What does your dissertation reveal?
The importance of the Church as the work of the Holy Spirit. Irenaeus underscores how the Holy Spirit is the
guide and guarantor of the Church, which communicates, through Scripture and Tradition, the truth humanity
needs in order to be saved. He shows how the Church cannot be separated from the Spirit. My dissertation
points out the insistence of Irenaeus on the significance of the Church as the image and likeness of God, the
essential drive of human beings toward communion with God, and their participation in the divine life.
Furthermore, in his writings, Irenaeus certainly did not fail to speak about the Christian’s commitment and
responsibility in the journey toward perfection.
Sr. Triphonia has now begun to work for a Degree in Moral Theology at the Alfonsiana Academy in Rome.
Our very best wishes to her as she undertakes this new “trip” in the Spirit and in knowledge.
Italy: Rome - Presentation of Pope Benedict XVI’s Encyclical “Caritas in Veritate” (03/12/2009)
The FSPs of Via Mascherino, Rome, held a meeting on 25 Nov. 2009 to present Pope
Benedict XVI’s Encyclical “Caritas in Veritate.” Guest speakers for the occasion were
Fr. Francesco Occhetta, a writer and the editor of Civiltà Cattolicà magazine, and Dr.
Pier Luigi Celli, General Director of LUISS Guido Carli University, Rome.
Published on the eve of the 2009 G8 Summit, the encyclical focuses on many
important issues that have been affected by the globalization of the world economy
and examines their effects on the lives of people today. It analyzes the world’s economic development from
the perspective of “charity in truth” and invites humanity to give an ethical imprint to the world economy–“Not
any ethics whatsoever, but an ethics that is people-centered”–in order to safeguard life on our planet and
shape a future that is more just for everyone (Celli).
Although it emphasizes that the Church “does not have technical solutions to offer and does not pretend to
intervene in politics,” the encyclical raises questions concerning the lack of ethics in financial practices today,
which has created new rules for the economy in general and perhaps even helped to cause the current
economic crisis.
One of the biggest problems of our time is the great instability in the field of employment, which, although
born of an idea that should have given new impulse and strength to the market and to individuals, has
become a phenomenon that facilitates the degradation of the human being and a waste of resources. The
mission of believers is to proclaim Christ as “the primary factor behind development” (Occhetta).
