è di quei tempi una foto con alcuni boscaioli in posa,
durante il riposo dal lavoro. Tutti indicati con caratteristici
soprannomi: Palle, Poggetto, Chiappetta, Mister. Palle
era Alfredo Colò; accanto a lui con una scure in mano,
nella foto è riconoscibilissimo un ragazzo di 12-13 anni:
suo figlio Zeno Colò.
Iniziò allora ed esplose dopo la guerra, la dinastia
dei campioni abetonesi: Zeno Colò (vincitore delle
Olimpiadi del 1952, campione mondiale ad Aspen),
Vittorio Chierroni, Celina Seghi, Paride Milianti ed altri.
Oggi Abetone è la maggior stazione invernale della
Toscana, dotata di una rete di piste articolata, di ampia
accoglienza ricettiva, di ogni moderno mezzo turistico.
Compresi gli efficienti spazzaneve, che liberano la strada
ed i parcheggi. Da poco è stato edito un libro che ricorda
come questo lavoro, necessario per far arrivare il postale
sul valico, fino a quest’ultimo dopoguerra fosse affidato
con pubblico appalto alle donne ed ai bambini abitanti
lungo la strada e nelle limitrofe frazioni. Gli uomini erano
via, a far carbone ed ai lavori del bosco: liberare la strada
con la pala di legno consentiva di avere una piccola, ma
necessaria, integrazione del magro reddito familiare.
The village of Abetone results from the building of the road
to Modena, and which began with just a few dwellings
and the customs house on the border between the Grand
Duchy of Tuscany and the Duchy of Modena. As Repetti
wrote in his “Dizionario”, the name is derived from the huge
fir tree that was cut down precisely in order to open up
the pass. The sport of skiing, however, came much later
when the village had already earned some fame as the
center of the Boscolungo resort, also attracting important
guests to Abetone like Giacomo Puccini, who bought the
villa “Lo Scoglietto”. The first clumsy, pioneering attempts
to ski were made by a member of the Cini family, using two
wooden boards that came from Norway, in the first decade
of the twentieth century. Thus began the sport of “sky”, as
this word of foreign derivation used to be spelled. Some
began to use the skis with a certain self-assurance that
soon became a skill. During the Fascist era, when Edda
Ciano and his entourage stayed in the best hotels that had
sprung up there and spent their nights at the poker table,
some thought was given to the idea of creating a ski resort.
In 1936, under the auspices of the Fascist regime, Abetone
was made a municipality. There is a picture from that time,

with an ax in his hand; it is his son Zeno Colò.
Thus, then began the Abetone dynasty of champions
that would explode after the Second World War, with
Zeno Colò (winner of the 1952 Olympics, world champion at Aspen), Vittorio Chierroni, Celina Seghi, Paride
Milianti and others. Today Abetone is the biggest ski
resort in Tuscany, with a network of multiple ski runs,
large accommodation facilities, and all modern tourist
means as well as efficient snow removal from roads
and parking lots. Not long ago, a book was published
that recalls how, up until the last war, the necessary
job of clearing snow from the roads in order to ensure
that the mail coach reached the pass was contracted
to the women and children living along the road and in
the nearby villages. The men were away in the forest,
making charcoal and doing other jobs. Cleaning the road
with a wooden shovel provided a small but necessary
addition to the meager household income.

SERRETTO
Il paese di Abetone è “figlio” della strada per Modena;
era nato con appena qualche casa e con la dogana
fra il granducato di Toscana ed il ducato di Modena. Il
nome sarebbe derivato – sta scritto nel “Dizionario” del
Repetti – da un abete colossale che fu abbattuto appunto
per aprire il passo. Lo sport dello sci però arrivò molto
più tardi quando già una qualche fama come centro di
villeggiatura Boscolungo se la era guadagnata. Anche
con frequenze capaci di attirar pubblico: Giacomo
Puccini, ad esempio, vi aveva acquistato la villa “Lo
Scoglietto”. I primi maldestri e pionieristici, tentativi
di sciare con due assi di legno, sembra di derivazione
norvegese ed usati da un Cini, sarebbero avvenuti nel
primo decennio del novecento. Era nata la pratica dello
“sky”, come allora si usava dire quasi a rimarcarne la
derivazione straniera. Qualcuno cominciò ad adoperarli
con una certa disinvoltura che presto divenne abilità:
in epoca fascista, quando Edda Ciano e la sua corte
soggiornavano nei migliori alberghi che erano sorti,
passando le nottate al tavolo da poker, si pensò di far
nascere anche un centro sciistico. Nel 1936, auspice il
regime, Abetone fu fatto Comune.
