Even though science is now extensively integrated into the cultural habits of our society, the theme “the end of the world” still remains a ‘free zone’ in which we seem to lose the points of reference that from the time of Galileo, have led us on a journey of discovery of the world we live in. Many people have invented, and continue to invent, their own theories regarding the end of the world, which from time to time gain public popularity: ancient civilisations (such as the Mayans), prophets, pseudosciences, religious sects and science fiction writers have always suggested unlikely versions of this event, occurring on significant dates and depicting catastrophic scenes. In this cultural examination (having survived the end of the world predicted for December 2012) we will first attempt to rediscover the voice of science, finding out what biologists, physicists and geologists have to say. We will then take a look at the Mayans, Nostradamus, religion, science fiction and the various cultures which have interpreted this event, so feared by Mankind, with such vivid imaginations. Copy of the Mayan calendar The invention of the Mayan calendar dates back thousands of years, when the Mesoamerican civilization was one of the most advanced on Earth. In actual fact, the Mayans used a system of 3 calendars: a divine calendar of 260 days (Tzolk’in), a solar calendar of 365 days (Haab) and the infamous calendar, known as The Long Count, which calculated how many days had passed since the creation of the world according to Mayan mythology. Vaticinia Nostradami (The Lost Book of Nostradamus), XVII Century Copy of illustrations by Simone Antonello. A series of images in a manuscript by Nostradamus from the XVII century. It is a collection of 80 watercolour images , many of which refer to the end of time. The only existing copy of this manuscript is at the Biblioteca Centrale (National Library) in Rome. QUALE MONDO FINIRÀ? WHICH WORLD WILL END? If we’re going to talk about the end of the world, we must first of all agree on what we mean by “world”. The dictionary definition of the word “world” is very varied. Generally speaking, the term world defines 4 distinct things that are nonetheless associated with one another. Starting with the broadest definition the world is the universe, or rather, all known things. Another focuses attention on the Earth and associates the world with the planet we live on and the (few) things we are able to see from here (the night sky, planets, stars and Sun). There is also a more biological vision, associated with life. In this case, “world” is defined as a group of living beings; in fact we often refer to the “animal world” or the “plant world”. Lastly, the world can be viewed and defined in terms of Mankind (Homo Sapiens) and his existence on Earth. In this installation, we can find out the ages of these “worlds” in relation to one another. Età dell’universo 13.000.000.000 anni Age of the universe 13.000.000.000 years Età della Terra 4.500.000.000 anni Age of the Earth 4,500,000,000 years Età della vita sulla Terra 4.000.000.000 anni Age of life on Earth 4,000,000,000 years Età dell’Homo 5.000.000 anni Age of Mankind 5,000,000 years Età dell’Homo Sapiens 200.000 anni Age of Homo Sapiens 200,000 years INIZIO E FINE DEL MONDO COME UNIVERSO THE BEGINNING AND END OF THE WORLD AS THE UNIVERSE Secondo molte osservazioni astronomiche, l’universo è in espansione. According to many astronomical observations, the universe is constantly expanding. Therefore, looking back it is easy to imagine that the universe began as a single particle, known as the “primordial atom” in the theory first proposed by Belgian physicist, Georges Lemaitre, in 1927. This fascinating theory, confirmed in 1929 by astronomer Edwin Hubble, is known today as the Big Bang Theory. In simplified terms, there are 3 models within this theory, which determine the future of our universe. The first model anticipates a steady state. The second foresees a continuous expansion of the universe. The last is the so-called “Big Crunch” or rather, a slowing down of expansion and the start of a contraction back to the primordial atom, which in turn gives way to a new cycle, a new Big Bang and the birth of a new universe. Only the first model allows for the infinite existence of our universe. If, on the other hand, the other 2 models are correct, the universe as we know it today is destined to end. In the first case due to heat death or extreme cold (Big Freeze) and in the second, due to an intense increase in density and temperature (Big Crunch). L’universo è in espansione! Telescope for astronomical observations from the 1920’s At the end of the 1920’s, Hubble discovered via the redshift phenomenon that the universe was expanding. The redshift phenomenon is comparable to the doppler effect for sound: light of the stars reaches the telescope at a lower frequency than that actually emitted by the stars themselves. This means that the stars and galaxies are moving away from us in practically every direction. The universe is expanding! Hubble discovered this phenomenon at the Mount Wilson Observatory (Pasadena, USA) using the 100-inch Hooker telescope, then the most powerful in the world. 1929 legge di Hubble. Hubble’s Law. INIZIO E FINE DEL MONDO COME PIANETA TERRA THE BEGINNING AND END OF THE WORLD AS PLANET EARTH La Terra si è formata circa 4,57 miliardi di anni fa dalla condensazione della nebulosa solare. The Earth was formed 4.57 billion years ago from the condensation of the solar nebula. During the formation of the Sun, a giant disc of dust and gas rotated around it: this matter was either drawn into it by gravity, or remained on the outside. Afterwards, the excess gas left on the Sun’s exterior began to come together, forming the 8 planets we know today. The Sun, the Earth and the other 7 planets are part of a dynamic system which has been balanced for billions of years. This balance can be disrupted by a few events, some of which are predictable and others which are not. The first, and most feared and debated, is a meteorite impact, similar to the one which likely marked the end of the dinosaurs billions of years ago. Science cannot predict these events exactly; there are special groups of astronomers who observe the sky in search of possible threats. It must be said though, that the probability of such impacts occurring are rather low. What is certain however, is that the nuclear combustion of the Sun will end in roughly another 4.5 billion years. When the Sun has used up its available supply of hydrogen it will enter a phase of extreme instability: this will mean the end of our Solar System. Solar System Model (only terrestrial planets) built in France, end of the nineteenth century. Collection of Meteorites from the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali According to the most famous Italian astronomer, Margherita Hack, there is a high risk of a meteorite impact in 2036. This asteroid is called 99942 Apophis, the unfortunate name of an Egyptian God meaning the destructor. INIZIO E FINE DEL MONDO COME VITA, INTRODUCENDO PANSPERMIA THE BEGINNING AND END OF THE WORLD AS LIFE, INTRODUCING PANSPERMIA Nel 1871 Charles Darwin suggerì che l’iniziale scintilla della vita poteva essersi verificata in un “piccolo e tiepido stagno, contenente ammoniaca e sali fosforici, luce, calore, elettricità, in modo che una proteina fosse chimicamente prodotta pronta per subire nuovi e più complessi cambiamenti”. In 1871 Charles Darwin suggested that the first sparks of life could have begun “in a warm little pond, with all sorts of ammonia and phosphoric salts, lights, heat, electricity, etc. present, so that a protein compound was chemically formed ready to undergo still more complex changes”. The idea was correct and what Darwin called a “pond” is today known as the “primordial soup” and seems to be where the process that gave way to life 4 billion years ago, began. This theory (abiogenist origin), was demonstrated in an experiment carried out by American Nobel prize winner Stanley Miller, in the 1950’s. There is another theory, known as Panspermia, according to which life on Earth has an extraterrestrial origin and the organic molecules, which form the basis of life itself, were brought to Earth by comets. In 2006, the discovery of long organic molecules in dust particles found on the tail of the comet Wild 2 discovered by space probe Stardust, was published in “Science” magazine. According to this theory, the seeds of life were scattered throughout the universe, therefore the possibility that the same phenomenon has occurred on other planets and in other planetary systems, cannot be excluded. The discovery of organic molecules on the tail of the comet Wild 2 has increased interest and expectations in another European mission, Rosetta, currently travelling towards the comet 67 P/Churyumov- Gerasimenko and due to reach it in 2014. Rosetta will be able to ground the Philae Lander on the comet’s surface. Philae will dig into the ice and analyse the extracted material, determining the exact chemical composition of the comet nucleus. Scientific magazine, Nature, june 2012 This edition contains yet another worrying analysis of the condition of Planet Earth’s most important life cycles: - Biodiversity and the nitrogen cycle are at the limits of acceptability. - Ocean acidification, stratospheric ozone levels, and climate mutation are now irreversible. - Reserves of drinking water are at a near critical level. Reconstruction of Stanley Miller’s experiment in 1953 At the beginning of the 1950’s, the American Nobel prize winner demonstrated the formation of amino acids, the basis of life, starting with 6 inorganic compounds (Water, Methane, Carbon dioxide, Ammonia, Sulphuric Acid, Hydrogen), elements which together with atmospheric lighting strikes were found in the primordial soup 4.5 billion years ago. In Africa, around 200,000 years ago, a new animal species appeared: Homo Sapiens. The direct evolution of a primate, from which it is highly likely that Neanderthal man, Australopithecus Man and Homo Erectus, now all extinct, also evolved. Today, Homo Sapiens, also known as Mankind, can be found almost anywhere on Earth and his culture seems to characterise not only his existence but also that of other species, and the habitat he lives in. Like the dinosaurs of the Cretaceous age, Mankind dominates planet Earth. But how long will this domination last? Can Mankind become extinct? And who will replace him? Of all the many speculative theories in existence, the most debated is “technological singularity”, put forward by American scientist, Ray Kurzweil. This theory predicts that Mankind will be replaced, as far as his domination on earth is concerned, by super intelligent machines, advanced evolutions of our computers and robots of today. Alternatively, this same theory foresees the birth of a new species, post human (H+): born from the hybridisation of man and machine; a cross between cybernetic mechanism and a biological organism. La rivista Time, nel febbraio 2011, prevedeva che nel 2045 l’uomo sarà potenziato dalla tecnologia a tal punto che potrà scegliere se vivere per sempre In February 2011, Time magazine predicted that in 2045 Mankind will be so enhanced by technology that he will be able to choose to live forever Fotovori, piccoli insetti elettronici in grado di seguire le fonti di luce e di ricaricarsi per “sopravvivere”. INIZIO E FINE DEL MONDO TEORIE E PROFEZIE DI ALTRE CULTURE THE BEGINNING AND END OF THE WORLD THEORIES AND PROPHECIES FROM OTHER CULTURES Tutte le culture e tutte le civiltà, del presente e del passato, hanno profetizzato la fine del mondo. All cultures and civilisations from the past and present have prophesised the end of the world. It is a common theme in mythology, philosophy and practically all religions. The ancient Egyptians and Mayans for example, used complicated calendars and the precession of the Equinoxes to mark the beginning and end of ages and civilisations. For the Mayans, 2012 supposedly marks the end of an important cycle and an important cultural revolution, interpreted by some as “the end of the world”. Nostradamus on the other hand (or rather he who interpreted his writings), has predicted the end of the world at least twice (1732, 1999), naturally without success. He will try again in 3797! Then there are those of the New Age and the Millenarists, but also philosophers like Kant who approached the issues of the end of the world, the Apocalypse and universal judgment in his sombre essay, “The End of all Things”. Finally, religions such as Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, have all dedicated enormous attention to the end of the world. Crystal skull from the Mayan culture Copy of the original crystal skull discovered by F. A. Mitchell-Hedges (22nd October 1882 – June 1959) at the Maya ruin in Lubaantun, Belize. There is an actual prophecy of the crystal skulls from the Mayan culture, kept alive by the new age culture. According to this prophecy, once the 13 skulls (scattered across the world) are brought together, a new age will begin, one in which Mankind will be illuminated and the world as we know it will come to an end. The prophecy will only be fulfilled when Mankind is sufficiently evolved. The Bible In the New Testament there is an entire book dedicated to the end of the world: The Revelation of John. However, from Noah’s Ark to the Prophet Ezekiel, the Bible is full of references to this event. “The end of the world” and “the end of civilisation” have always been among the most popular and commonly used subjects of science fiction magazines, comics, books and films. This subgenre of science fiction is known as “apocalyptic science fiction” and from time to time predicts and prefigures devastating natural disasters, pestilential pandemics, destructive wars or the arrival of new, more intelligent civilisations. In this area you can see some of the first editions of the science fiction magazines founded in America in 1926 (Amazing Stories) and 1929 (Wonder Stories), by Hugo Gernsback. As well as these historic editions dedicated to the end of the world, we have also chosen some of the most well known books, films and comics in the history of apocalyptic science fiction. Mankind has always asked the question: “Are we alone in the Universe?” Today, Science is still unable to answer this question with any certainty. However, huge steps forward have been made in the field of space exploration and the search for other worlds on which maybe, in a not too distant future, mankind may be able to live. The search for extrasolar planets (almost 1000 have been discovered since 1995) is focused mainly on finding planets similar to Earth, in terms of size and chemical-physical conditions, able to sustain life. The Kepler satellite has recently discovered a planet known as Kepler-22b, a sort of super-earth, roughly 600 light years away from us. It orbits a yellow dwarf star and the average surface temperature is about 22°c; excellent conditions for the presence of life. Will it one day be possible for us to reach these planets and perhaps even take refuge there from the inevitable end of our own Solar System? For now we must make do with studying these far away worlds from afar, but we can be sure that there will plenty of surprises in store.
