Il past perfect continuous si usa quando si
vuole mettere in evidenza la durata di un’attività o
di un’azione nel passato, anteriore ad un altro
evento, sempre nel passato.
Il concetto espresso è «fino ad allora», «fino
a quel momento».
Ex: James had been studying medicine for two
years when he decided to change course.
I had been working all day so I didn’t go to the
party.
La forma in –ing (continuous) esprime un’azione che era
in corso «fino a quel momento» e mette in evidenza la durata.
Come il present perfect continuous, esso si usa
(prevalentemente) con i VERBI DI AZIONE.
Non si usa (di solito) con:
• VERBI DI STATO (be, have)
• VERBI DI STATO MENTALE (believe, consider, doubt, expect,
forget, know…)
• VERBI DI PERCEZIONE (feel, hear, see…)
• VERBI DI SENTIMENTO (like, love, hate, prefer…)
Il past perfect continuous si usa generalmente
in frasi affermative e interrogative. NON si usa in
frasi negative.
Attenzione alle false negative! Il past perfect
continuous viene spesso usato in queste frasi.
Ex: I hadn’t been studying for long when you called
me. (Non studiavo da molto, ma studiavo)
Tom hadn’t been watching the film for 5 minutes
when he fell asleep. (Non lo guardava da più di 5
minuti, ma lo guardava)
