Good evening ladies and gentlemen and thank you for being here for the eighth meeting in the Triple I series. This is the first Triple I meeting of 2017 and it is therefore a good opportunity to pause for a moment and take stock of our achievements over the course of this initiative, which the Italian embassy launched in March last year. As those of you who are regulars will know, these meetings take the form of conversations between innovative champions of Italian business and important media figures specialising in business and finance. These conversations present inspiring stories of success, demonstrating the resilience, dynamism and elasticity of Italian entrepreneurs. These are the characteristics that have allowed numerous Italian companies operating on international markets to weather the series of crises in recent years. The Triple I meetings held in 2016 focused on a wide range of sectors, from finance to sustainable technology and from agrifood production to design and ecommerce. Many interesting points were brought up, on topics that are crucial to the world of Italian entrepreneurship, such as corporate governance and the development of new business models in established sectors. We were also treated to several fun anecdotes, such as the story of Technogym, a major Italian producer of sports equipment, which started out as a little project in the family garage – just like Apple, but in a small Italian town in the 1980s. Looking back over the past meetings, it is clear that they have helped us identify a number of trends in Italian business and have given us an idea of the developments we might expect in the next few years. Naturally, there have been negative conclusions as well as positive ones, but this is to be expected, given the challenging economic landscape over the last few years. Even so, it appears clear that the positive elements that emerged outweigh the negative ones by far. For example, we have been witness changes at a number of crucial junctions for Italian businesses. For example: the culture of governance in a context largely characterised by family businesses; the size that companies are able to grow to in a country where over 85% of producers are SMEs; and increasing access to capital markets by companies that have historically been hesitant to use such financing channels. This evening we are delighted to welcome Sarah Gordon, the business and associate editor of the Financial Times, and Valerio Battista, the CEO of the Prysmian Group. Prysmian is a company with ancient roots, having inherited Pirelli Cables and Systems and Hollandsche Draad & Kabel Fabriek, which were founded in 1979 and 1910 respectively. Despite this long history, the company has a notably forward-thinking outlook. Having acquired the Dutch company Draka, Prysmian now has a solid presence in 50 countries, with 91 manufacturing plants, 17 research and development centres, and over 19 thousand employees. It is the world leader in the sector of cables and systems for energy and telecommunication, with a turnover of over 7.5 billion euros in 2015. Valerio Battista was instrumental to the creation of the Prysmian Group in 2005 and to its flotation on the stock market in 2007. Since then, the group has led the way among Italian public companies in taking on the challenge of accessing capital markets, and it is one of the few such companies whose shareholder base is truly broad. Valerio is a manager with extensive experience and an in-depth knowledge of the industrial sector. He spent many years at the Pirelli Group, during which time he was responsible for the reorganisation of Pirelli Cables and Systems. In 2005 he took the helm of Prysmian, overseeing its flotation on the stock market in 2007 and the acquisition of Draka in 2011. I think it is safe to say Prysmian’s rise to become a global leader in its sector is the result of Valerio’s vision and values. His vision has allowed the company to grasp the opportunities arising from the digital revolution and the consequent fibre-optic technologies. And his values dictate the crucial importance of maintaining Prysmian’s Italian character, even in its role as a public company. This evening’s conversation will be led by the excellent Sarah Gordon, a journalist, researcher, economic analyst and finance expert as well as the business and associate editor of the Financial Times. Before joining the FT, Sarah was an analyst with Citigroup and Foreign & Colonial Investment Trust. As a careful observer of economic developments, she closely followed the mood of the British business community in the months elading up to the referendum in June and is an expert on maters relating to governance of large corporations. I hope that Triple I will continue to be as successful in 2017 as it was in 2016. I will now hand over to Sarah Gordon so that she can kick off this evening’s conversation. Thank you once more for being here.
