The Russian military clergy and the Great War
I preti accompagnavano i soldati nelle campagne militari fin dai tempi remoti. Russian military clergy during World War I Russian military clergy has a long history. Priests accompanied the soldiers in the campaigns in ancient times. In the 18-th century Emperor Peter I allocated military clergy in a special group. Russia had 443 military priests in 1891. The Russian army had 744 priests in 1909. During the First World War many diocesan priests worked in the army. 5000 priests served in the army. The main task of the priests was conducting worship. In military circumstances it was very difficult to conduct the liturgy. Military pastors taught and conducted spiritual conversations. Only talented and educated preachers were invited into the army. Often military priests visited the forefront to serve and to talk with soldiers. Some priests died during service, some were infected and died in the hospitals. Sometimes pastors lead soldiers to attack after the commander’s death. During the war, 25 priests were killed, 54 died from wounds and 76 priests were in captivity. After the Russian revolution in 1917 soldiers stopped attending worship. They did not want to listen to the priests. The Army became the crowd. The Communist government killed about 200 thousand people, only because they believed in God. Many former military priests were also killed.
