Stefano Maggi (1966)
Associate professor in Contemporary History, entitled to full professor since December 2013, he is
chairman of the Department of Political and International Science at the University of Siena (Italy).
He got a degree “cum laude” in Political Science, a doctorate in History of Africa and a master in
Economy and Policy of Transport (taken “cum laude”).
He lectured and presented papers at conferences in Italy and abroad. Member of research groups in
a national and international context, he worked for public administration for the development of the
railway heritage and branch railways and transport networks. His researches mainly concern
transport history analyzed in an international environment and sustainable mobility.
He is member of the Italian Society for the study of Contemporary History, Society for the Study of
History of Institution in Modern and Contemporary Age, Association for the History of Railways in
France (Ahicf), International Association for the History of Traffic, Transport and Mobility (T2M).
He belongs to the Interuniversity Centre for the History of Social Change and Innovation (Ciscam).
He was chairman of the Interuniversity Centre for the Study of Public Administration (Cirap) 20092014. He was chairman of the doctorate Historic Science in Contemporary Age and now he is
member of the doctorate in Historical Studies of the Siena and Florence Universities. He is member
of the editorial staff of the review “Storia e Futuro” and member of the editorial board of the
“Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering”.
Scientific director of the Library Cesare Pozzo for transport and mutuality in Milan, chairman of the
Cesare Pozzo Foundation for mutuality in Milan and member of ASMOS in Siena (Archival of
democratic and labor movement), he is director of the book series “Territori” for Nerbini editions in
Florence.
He teaches History of Communication and Transport and History of Economy and Territory at the
University of Siena.
Author of over 180 scientific publications: books, essays, articles on Italian and international
journals.
