Interviews "Sham Of Perfection" (2006) MetalFrontiers.com [eng] Tystnaden: "We are not a copy of someone else, we are Tystnaden" Interview with Laura De Luca One month ago I came across an unknown, to me CD, called "Sham Of Perfection". It was the debut album of an Italian band from Udine, Tystnaden. I was impressed by this album so I arranged an interview with them. Laura, their beautiful singer, introduces the band to our readers, talks about the problems they faced till they manage to release "Sham Of Perfection" and reveals their future plans. Hello Laura and congratulations in your first album "Sham Of Perfection". I have to admit that I am impressed with the result. What about you? Laura: Thank you very much Chris for your nice words to us. Really, we are very proud of our first album… we love our Sham of Perfection, and I can tell you that even if you could say that I'm a bit presumptuous… It took a lot of time and trust to write songs that could be equal to a real full-length album. So, after many sacrifices and many difficult period this album is a reason of pride, for us. And we hope that many people all around the world will fall in love with our music as we do. Why did you make almost eight years to release your first album? Which were the main problems you have faced? Laura: Now I'm going to tell you something about the history of the band, so you can better understand our pathway. In the beginning (1998) the line up of the band was different. There was another male singer, another drummer, one of our friends who helped us with keyboards during the live shows and me as a choir-singer. We recorded a two-tracks mini cd named "Tystnaden", in May 2000. The echo from the press all around the world was astounding. We had successfully taken our first step. The old singer and the drummer left the band for personal reasons, and then the replacements Alberto Iezzi end Lorenzo Frascaroli gave us the courage to continue. We entered the Outer Sound Studios in Rome in May 2003 to record the songs of the mini-cd "Fragments". So, as you can see, Tystnaden's line up is settled and definitive only since 2003 (and this line up is the up-to-date one!). After that, the band awakened the interest of Limb Music Products (LMP) with whom we reached an agreement. The story continues with Sham of Perfection out in the worldwide stores. So the main problem we faced was the change of the line up happened. This thing brought a settlement and a mutation period not only in the band but also in the musical ideas. But for us this period was a rebirth, a renewal in our style, in our musical composition and performance. Obviously this period has taken us a lot of time; it was a "settlement" period. I believe that you have changed your music style since your first demo, to the right direction in my opinion. Your demos were more brutal and they had a gothic aura. In "Sham Of Perfection" we can see a more melodic side of Tystnaden. Why did you make such a change? Laura: In our first demo "Tystnaden" there's the old band's line-up, with the old singer and the old drummer, and also with gothic keyboards' atmospheres. I perfectly agree with your opinion: in it you can hear all our immaturity and also our development if you compare it with Fragments and, of course, with Sham Of Perfection. I can't explain this change of style or, better, this development of style… it's a natural development, a maturation of our ideas and skills. We consider Fragments as a turning point for us, but also as a starting point because, in my opinion Tystnaden in 2000 (in the two tracks demo) are very different from Tystnaden in Fragments and in Sham of Perfection… they are almost two bands! Can you tell us Tystnaden's main influences? Laura: Our influences are different, we are six musicians each with his own personality and we all like different kind of music: Alberto, for example, he likes pop music at the same way of Dream Theater, Cesare loves Nevermore and at the same time he likes The Beatles, Lorenzo likes the hip-hop of Fort Minor, but at the same time he's a fan of Dream Theater, and he likes the brutality of the Slipknot, but also some kind of music really different, like jazz and trance. Federico is the black metal guy, but he also likes al lot of guitar heroes, and I love bands like Slipknot, System Of a Down and Ill Nino, and I was also a fan of Amorphis, In Flames and Dark Tranquillity… Copyright © 2000-2009 Tystnaden.com - All rights reserved. As you can see our influences are truly different, and I think that you can probably find some of the music that has inspired us to become musicians in every Tystnaden song… We think that maybe our compositions could sounds original because of all of these different influences… In the beginning you didn't have keyboards. Why did you choose to add keyboards in your music and give them such a great role in your music? Laura: This change happened during the period of the line-up changes, when the old singer and the old drummer left the band for personal reasons. We wanted to make a restyle of our music, and we thought that we needed a keyboard, but not a gothic one… we wanted a keyboards that should have had a great role in our whole music. Then, when we met Lorenzo, he brought us his style and his ideas… and then all came out really natural. You have elements of many different kinds of music in "Sham Of Perfection". Will you continue in that direction or in the future we may see Tystnaden plays a more direct style? Laura: I think that you may hear a more direct style… but as I told you before, we are six musicians, with our own personality… and it's difficult to join six different minds in only one song, with the same meaning. In past (but also today?) we had a lot of quarrels during the composition of some songs, and I think that there will be many other quarrels in our future… Who writes the music in Tystnaden? Laura: A new song starts from one of us, usually one of the two guitarists or from the keyboard player, but the magic of Tystnaden is the way we work on the original idea: we try to get a strong impact thru a very aggressive guitar-riffing, but being at the same time focused on creating a good melody, that can be easily reminded… Lyrics are the final step, and they are inspired by the mood that the instrumental song provokes in the soul of the lyricist. What about the lyrics? Who wrote them? With which subjects you deal with? Laura: I wrote all the lyrics of the album, with the useful helping hand of Lorenzo, sometimes. It is a real difficult part of composing songs, I think. Because you have to open your heart to your sensations (good or bad), you have to find out the right words that describe a sort of painting that you are seeing in your mind, you have to face a song that do not ever remind you good moods, and you are alone with your pencil and your ghosts. Who is responsible for the cover of "Sham of Perfection"? Laura: The album cover represents the significance gave to the words "Sham of Perfection" by Travis Smith. Travis is one of the greatest graphic-man in the world, for me! He made a lot of famous covers (Nevermore, Novembre, Opeth…), and when ho showed me only the sketch of the cover I was really amazed. For us the cherub is a synonym of perfection. And, as you could see, half of the cherub is perfect and bright; the other half is decayed and fallen into ruin, with a bloody tear running down the face. Every thing and every person has two sides: one is perfect and the other is its sham… this is our Sham Of Perfection. What are the reactions of your fans and the press till now? Laura: Well I don't know very much about the first reactions after the release… There are very good reviews but also a bad Italian review (a guy that hates our kind of music and cannot make an objective review, using acid words for us…), and some new fans wrote to us that they love our album. How did you end up signing with LMP? Laura: During the time of our line-up changes we were writing and composing the songs of our mini cd "Fragments", released in may 2003. This EP is self-produced to make us known by the people all over the world and to awaken the interest of a label. This step was necessary to reach an agreement for collaboration to realize a full-length album. So that! When LMP received our promo, Limb was stirred up to produce a new kind of production, different by his other ones. We are very happy to have reached the agreement with LMP, and I can say that the ways and the times we needed to reach it, they were necessary to become what we are now! You are a quite new metal band. Would you like to introduce the band members to our readers? Laura: Yes, sure…and I'm very proud to do that: Lorenzo, the youngest member of the band: the keyboard player and growl singer. He met up with the band through pure coincidence. During the instrument's sound check of a little Copyright © 2000-2009 Tystnaden.com - All rights reserved. contest here in Udine (the place where we live), I have listened to the check of the keyboards of an n unknown band. "Well I like this style", I thought… and I went to introduce myself. Then Lorenzo turned out to be an excellent death metal singer, too. Cesare, (guitar): the elderly member of Tystnaden, one of the founders. I love his style of playing rhythm guitar. He is (together with Lorenzo) the composer. Almost every song starts by one of his guitar riffing. Federico (guitar): As Lorenzo he has been known through pure coincidence, during a holiday at the coast. He's our guitar hero! Marco (bass): He played together with Cesare in a thrash metal cover band, before Tystnaden. He was the first of us who has been fascinated by the new sounds of Swedish death metal band, such as Dark Tranquillity, Amorphis, In Flames… Alberto: our perfect drummer! His immense talent gave us the courage to continue, during the line up changes' period. And he's also a funny guy! And then, there is me… Can you tell us your future plans? Laura: Our future plans are to spread at the best Sham of Perfection to make us known by people all over the world and to work in the composition of new songs for next albums, searching constantly for new moods and new feelings, improving ourselves as we have done up to now. Then we hope in the planning of some gigs or a real tour… we love live shows because we can feel the nearest contact with our fans!! Do you have any proposals to play live outside of Italy? Laura: Well…no, we don't have up to now any proposal like this. But we hope for a future… It should be great! Recently you have redesigned your official website. Do you believe internet has helped metal scene? Laura: Yes, surely! Metal scene does not have the same efficacious means as the pop music business. I mean, internet has helped the more unknown band: it is the communication of the present and the future, and it brings a lot of informations directly to the fans. How did you end up singing in Tystnaden? I mean it's rare to see a woman in a metal group. Was this the dream of your life? Laura: Well… I started to sing with Tystnaden trough coincidence. The old singer was one of my friends… and he asked me, one day, to become the choir singer in his band. I asked him what kind of music they were playing, and when he told me something like "melodic death metal" I was shocked: I've never heard this kind of music… But I made the test with the band all the same… then slowly came out my deep love in metal music. I was going deeply to fall in love with music. This is one of my personal changes in my life. And I always thank my old singer and Tystnaden for letting me know this true side of me. So, as you could see, this was not the dream of my life in the beginnings… but after a lot of time it became the dream of my life. You have a very good voice. Have you done any lessons or you just have this gift? Laura: Thank you very much for the compliment! I‘ve never done any lessons, and you can hear it from my voice and my style of singing. Sometimes I think that I have to do some lessons, but sometimes I also think that my style is natural and that I don't want to lose it! Which metal singer you admire most? Laura: I love the aggressively of Warrel Dane (Nevermore) with his "strange" way of singing, the timbre of Serj Tankian (System of a down) and the timbre of Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity)… obviously now I can not recall to my mind anyone else…? Thanks a lot for answering my questions. Can you tell to our readers the main reason they should buy "Sham Of Perfection". Laura: Well… I am not so good in making some commercial stunts… but I can try… in our album Sham Of Perfection there is all our love in music, there's all our musical development, I don't sing as a choir singer, as (like) many gothic productions, I try to be aggressive but keeping always my female voice…, Lorenzo has a beautiful growl (in my opinion), and our songs sound original to me, I think we are not a copy of someone else, we are Tystnaden. Then, everyone has his own likings… Thank you for the chance of doing this great interview, very glad to talk with you! Interview taken by DrStein. E i testi chi li scrive? Capisco… e invece dimmi, cos'è cambiato da 'Fragments', l'ultimo demo, a 'Sham Of Perfection'? A me sono piaciute tantissimo 'Tystnaden' e 'Pride Vs Intellect'… Laura: Eh, qui ci dividiamo! Allora, io preferisco 'Pride Vs Intellect', ma forse anche perché, come ti ho già detto prima, parla di me; a qualcuno piace 'Münchausen Syndrome', a qualcun altro 'First Embrace', a qualcun altro ancora 'The Vanishing'. Copyright © 2000-2009 Tystnaden.com - All rights reserved. Laura: Oh, grazie mille… e speriamo in bene, dai!! Ciao a tutti!! This interview was published in Lethe Warden Webzine in June 2006. Laura: In effetti sì. Tystnaden proviene dallo svedese e significa silenzio. State avendo più riscontri all'estero o in Italia? Laura: There in my horizon, many empty spaces are filled with my nothing. Too many farewells of falseness, too many blows. Many quarrels never had.. Interview taken by Divine. This interview was published in Dagheisha.com in June 2006. Metalglory Magazine [eng] The more I listen to "Sham of Perfection", the more I like this remarkable debut with its fine blend of Dark Metal, Gothic and scandinavian Melodeath.Their fantastic frontlady Laura de Luca was ready to answer some questions about Italy's hottest newcomer 2006... Hi Laura. Congratulations for your album. As some of our readers may never have heard about you, please give us a short briefing in the band's biography. Laura: Tystnaden's project started at the end of 1998 by an idea of Marco Di Castri (bass), Cesare Codispoti (guitar), and Nestor Borgo (first Tystnaden's drummer, actually our webmaster). The wish of new sounds pooled them: they were influenced by Swedish Death Metal and by bands like Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, Sentenced, Children Of Bodom. The first who joined them was Federico Grassi (guitar), and the fifth member of the band was a male singer (growler and screamer…as black metal style!). The initial project was evolving until the common decision of introducing a female voice into the five pieces band: the idea was to contrast the aggressive growls and screamings… So, in April 1999, the band was finally completed when I came into the band (well…in the beginning I was only a choir singer!). Then we chose the name of the band: Tystnaden. We recorded a two track mini cd in 2000 which amazed the band because of its success got among reviews and people but then the old drummer and the male singer left the band for personal reasons. We found in the great replacements Alberto Iezzi (drum) and Lorenzo Frascaroli (Keyboards and growls) the courage and the wish to continue at the best. We recorded in Rome in 2003 with this up to date line up our second mini cd self produced "Fragments", and we considered it as a turning point and a maturation of our musical ideas and skills. Fragments drew the attention of LMP…and the history continues with Sham of Perfection out in stores! Did the music change from your very beginnings to now? Laura: Yes it changes a lot. In the beginnings we have no keyboards (excepting for some gothic keyboards' lines) and our music was a mix of influences between the Swedish melodic death metal, black metal (cause our old male singer was a fan of extreme growls and screamings) and gothic atmospheres. And then there was me as a choir-singer, and I had a different voice and style of singing. Then the development and the maturation towards a very personal style slowly happened. Please describe your music with three words! Laura: Powerful, joyful and emotional. Are you satisfied with the reviews to "Sham of perfection" so far? Laura: Well…I am very satisfied with the reviews. There are very good ones. But also a bad Italian review (a guy that hates our kind of music and cannot make an objective review, using acid words for us…), and some new fans wrote to us that they love our album. Why did you choose a Swedish word ("Silence") as moniker? Isn't the meaning of the word a huge contrast to your music? Laura: We were purposely searching for a particular moniker for our band, a meaningful and significant name…we preferred to sacrifice the pronunciation of a more simple band name. For us, the words Tystnaden, which, as you said, means silence in Swedish, perfectly represents what we wanted to tell with our music and the contrast between melody and aggressively in our songs. That contrast represented us since the beginning. Copyright © 2000-2009 Tystnaden.com - All rights reserved. Any deeper or personal meaning behind the name? Laura: Well we think that if the silence did not exist the music would be non sense. The silence is the absence that give birth to the music. It could not exist silence without music and music without silence. "Though the wave of words is forever upon us, yet our depth is forever silent." (K. Gibran, Sand & Foam) Do you know Ingmar Bergmann's movie called "Tystnaden"? Laura: Yes, of course: Tystnaden is a Swedish movie by Ingmar Bergman made in 1963. With this moniker we also wanted to make a tribute to the nation that gave birth to the music which inspired our musical project in 1998. Did any other bands besides the Scandinavian Melodeath-Acts have a huge impact on your music? Laura: Well, yes…and not only in the past. Our influences were different, we are six musicians each with his own personality and we all loved different kind of music. To make this thing more clear I can tell you some of our musical likings: Alberto, for example, he likes pop music at the same way of Dream Theater, Cesare loves Nevermore and at the same time he likes The Beatles, Lorenzo likes the hip-hop of Fort Minor, but at the same time he's a fan of Dream Theater and he likes the brutality of the Slipknot, but also some kind of music really different, like jazz and trance. Federico is the black metal guy, but he also likes al lot of guitar heroes, and I love bands like Slipknot, System Of a Down and Ill Nino, and I am also a fan of Amorphis, In Flames and Dark Tranquillity… As you can see our influences are truly different, and I think that you can probably find some of the music that has inspired us to become musicians in every Tystnaden song… We think that maybe our compositions could sounds original because of all of these different influences… What are your lyrics about? Laura: I wrote all the lyrics of the album, with the useful helping hand of Lorenzo, sometimes. It is a real difficult part of composing songs, I think. Because you have to open your heart to your sensations (good or bad), you have to find out the right words that describe a sort of painting that you are seeing in your mind, you have to face a song that do not ever remind you good moods, and you are alone with your pencil and your ghosts. Even if I don't speak about direct personal experiences (but this happens rarely), my personal experience makes a sort of filter with all the lyrics and with all the subjects. Which song on the album is most typical for you and why? Laura: I think that the most typical song could be "First Embrace". This is the first song we've written after the turning point of fragments (our second mini cd!) and it was born in a such natural and genuine way. The first song with a refrain that bears in mind, with aggressive and simple guitars that have at the same time a strong and direct impact. I mean this is the first well organized song we have written. Which song is your favorite on the album and why? Laura: My favourite song is "Pride Vs Intellect", because of its music and his lyrics. It speaks about me. This song is me during a difficult period of my life. When we were composing this song, everything reminded me those feelings I‘ve already felt , and I said something like: "now I have to take this pen and I have to write what I felt, I have to look at me with the mind's and the heart's eye"…and the result is Pride Vs Intellect. There's a sort of magic between me and this song. How many concerts did you play so far? Any of them outside of Italy? Laura: I don't know how many concerts we have played since the beginnings, really, not too much but not a few, too… but no one outside Italy, unfortunately. Here in Italy it's difficult to be an Italian metal band. In the north east of Italy, public places like pubs, disco, bars and so on, prefer to let cover pop rock, and also ska, bands play…and I can imagine that people of north east of Italy prefer to listen to these cover bands, instead of listening to bands that play own music. Well, other bands, with less problems and more bravery (and also more money, sad but true!!), tried to go outside of Italy or far from the north east of our country…but we preferred to put all our energies, in the last two years, on the realization of a full-length album, improving our skills also for future live shows. Now we are waiting for an opportunity that will benefit the band, our fans and people who will hear us for the first time. It could be with a bigger known band or a very good unknown band. It's all a matter of timing with a good feeling. Copyright © 2000-2009 Tystnaden.com - All rights reserved. Which band you would like to support on tour? Laura: How can I answer this question? With a dream or something that could be realizable?... well, I'm going to answer with a dream, maybe if I tell you this dream come true! I would like to support System of a Down on tour…or Slipknot…or my first love: Dark Tranquillity… Is there something that you have never been asked but always have been eager to say? Laura: Yes… a short question that seems to be a stupid one, with a shorter answer: "With your first full-length album out in the worldwide stores, do you feel like a dream come true?" and my answer is: "YES!" We are looking forward seeing you in Germany. Best wishes to you all. Any last words? Laura: Thank you very much! We are very proud of this your interview because it's our opportunity to make us known. We hope that "Sham of Perfection" will be appreciated and that people will support our band Tystnaden, bringing up this underrated kind of music more and more. Interview taken by Lex. This interview was published in Metalglory in July 2006. Lords of Metal [eng] First thing that needs some words of explanation is: why a Scandinavian name for an Italian band? Lorenzo: We were purposely searching for a particular moniker for our band, a meaningful and significant name. We preferred to sacrifice the pronunciation of a more simple band name. For us, the words Tystnaden, which, as you said, means silence in Swedish, perfectly represents what we wanted to tell with our music and the contrast between melody and aggression in our songs .That contrast represented us since the beginning. Tystnaden is a Swedish film by Ingmar Bergman made in 1963. With this moniker we also wanted to make a tribute to the nation that gave birth to the music which inspired our musical project in 1998. Though with Dark Tranquillity and In Flames you have not that much in common I think… Lorenzo: Yes, we know that, but they were our inspiration bands in the beginning. They fascinated us when we formed the band, and they were what we wanted to become. Now you can hear a more "listening" genre because of the many changes in the band members and music tastes. You are from Udine, which reminded me immediately of Elvenking. And there is a connection, isn't it? Lorenzo: Yes, Elvenking are good friends for us, we respect them as a band and also as persons, and we played with them in a lot of live gigs around here. Laura knows them since a lot of years, and she sang in all their albums as guest vocalist. For the recordings of 'Sham Of Perfection' we wanted to invite Elvenking's singer Damnagoras to sing in some parts of the album, but there were some technical problems and it wasn't possible. I think that we'll try that again in the next album. First efforts of the band were with male vocals. Why did you decide to add female vocals? Lorenzo: Laura started to sing in the band as choir-singer. But after a line-up change, the band decided that the female vocals could add a special taste to our music. So she became the lead vocalist of the band, with a fusion with the growls, and all this make a good sound that we love a lot. Aren't you afraid that there are already so many bands with the 'beauty and the beast' attitude? Lorenzo: There are a lot of bands like that, we know, but for us is a bit different. We think that Laura's voice is not the usual baby-voice that you can find in a lot of gothic bands, and she has not even a lyrical voice as Nightwish singer Tarja. We try to make something new, or at least something different. We are Tystnaden, and we are not a commercial movement, our fusion is natural, not mechanically studied. We're definitively NOT a "beauty and the beast" band. You recorded the EP 'Fragments' at the Outer studios in Rome with Giuseppe Orlando from Novembre. Can you tell anything about this experience? Lorenzo: It was a great experience. Giuseppe Orlando is a very funny guy, and it was amazing to work with him, he has a good taste in music, and he's very professional. This experience taught us how to make an album sound clearly, how to play together and "mix" our parts Copyright © 2000-2009 Tystnaden.com - All rights reserved. to create a melody good to listen. This was our first real studio experience, and so it's an experience that we'll never forget for all life. I want to thank Giuseppe for carrying us to that point. And why did you choose another studio now, New Sin Studios (also in Italy) with Luigi Stefanini? Any comments on the recording process would be fine… Lorenzo: We chose New Sin Studios because it is closer to our home, and because our friends Elvenking talked very good about Luigi Stefanini. The keyboards were recorded first in Sherpa Studios near there, to make a guideline for the drums recording. After that we came to New Sin Studios to record all the parts. This was an amazing experience too. Luigi is a genius, and he was the engineer of the great sounds you can hear in the album. We had a lot of masters and guides through our recording works. We found the help of many friends: a friend of mine that gave us a Mesa head, Laura's cello master that recorded some great pieces, a lot of friends that helped us with translations, agreements and studio life, Gianni Rojatti that played that great solo, Elvenking for the suggestions, and, obviously Luigi with his teachings and good taste in music. The recording work was huge, and the difficulties never left us until the end, but we finally made it, and it sounds like we wanted, so we're very proud of what we made. The album was mastered in Germany by R.D. Liapakis (Mystic Prophecy) and Christian Schmid (Music Factory studios). How did you end up there? Lorenzo: The choice for the mastering was of our recording label. Limb has chosen these guys for making our master because he knows they are very competent in this work. After listening to 'Sham Of Perfection' we are very satisfied of their work, we trust in what they do, and it will be great if they'll master our next albums too. The album was recorded in January 2005. Seems a long time ago. Does it mean it was a selffinanced effort and only later the deal with the label came up? Lorenzo: The deal with Limb Music Products began before the recordings. We had some songs ready to be recorded, after 'Fragments', and when Limb asked us to make an agreement, we recorded 'Sham Of Perfection' for him. So Limb financed us for the recordings, the cover art, the photo sessions and made the rest of the work, like the printing etc. What about the negotiations with labels and what's the story behind eventually choosing for Limb Music Products, generally famous for their straight power metal issues? Lorenzo: It all started when Limb listened to 'Fragments'. When you reach an agreement with a label that has a hundred of bands of your same genre and more famous, it's difficult to draw attention upon yourself. But Limb was truly amazed of our work and wanted us in his lines. So we are very proud to be with them, even if we're different from the other Limb bands, and we think Limb considers us with a special consideration. Are there plans for a single or a videoclip? (for I think the music is very radio friendly) Which song would you prefer to release as a single/videoclip? Lorenzo: It will be great, maybe a videoclip video of 'First Embrace', that is more radio friendly. Time will tell, it will be a dream come true. What about tour plans and gigs? Lorenzo: Well…it would be great! But I don't know yet the plans of our record label for the tour dates. So that, now, I cannot answer this question...unfortunately! For now we are playing in North Italy some live gigs for the new album promotion. Live sessions are cool because they're the most important thing to have a closer contact with our fans. Maybe in the future we'll have a larger tour, we'll wait for things to happen. Who are the main composers of the band and maybe a few words about the writing process… Lorenzo: A new song starts from one of us, usually one of the two guitarists or from the keyboard player, but the magic of Tystnaden is the way we work on the original idea: we try to get a strong impact through a very aggressive guitar-riffing, but being at the same time focused on creating a good melody, that can be easily reminded. Lyrics are the final step, and they are inspired by the mood that the instrumental song provokes in the soul of the lyricist. Who is responsible for lyrics and what are your main sources of inspiration? Lorenzo: Laura wrote all the lyrics of the album, with the useful helping hand of me, sometimes. It is a really difficult part of composing songs, I think. Because you have to open your heart to your sensations (good or bad), you have to find out the right words that describe a sort of painting that you are seeing in your mind, you have to face a song that do not ever remind you good moods, and you are alone with your pencil and your ghosts. Even if we don't speak Copyright © 2000-2009 Tystnaden.com - All rights reserved. about direct personal experiences (but this happens rarely), our personal experience makes a sort of filter with all the lyrics and with all the subjects. Can you tell anything about the cello parts (nice!) Lorenzo: Well, the cello parts are played by a friend of Laura, who is a cello teacher: Massimo Favento. It is Laura's idea to put in some songs some cello parts, because this is the best instrument for her, and she has always had in mind to bring cello into Tystnaden songs. Together with Massimo, we decided which ones among the songs of the album were the best to rearrange with cello parts…and we chose 'Tystnaden' and 'The Foolish Plan'. And about the contribution of Gianni Rojatti? Lorenzo: There is a good friendship between us and Gianni because Federico and Cesare were both his pupils time ago, and we think that Gianni is a guitar hero not only here in the North of Italy. When we invited him to play a guitar solo on our album he was really amazed and happy, and he started immediately to write a great guitar solo, and now he says that his Rewards' solo is the most beautiful solo he wrote! And we think that his solo is amazing! The artwork is done by Travis Smith. He seems to be omni-present. How did you get in contact with him and what are the experiences? Lorenzo: Laura came in contact with him via email, because we think he's fantastic, and in fact he made a wonderful cover for us. We gave him all the materials he needed, Laura talked to him about the meaning that we think for the album, for the band and for our music, and he created the cover. The album cover represents the significance given to the words 'Sham of Perfection' by Travis. Travis is one of the greatest graphic-man in the world, for us! He made a lot of famous covers (Nevermore, Novembre, Opeth…), and when he showed us only the sketch of the cover we were really amazed. For us the cherub is a synonym of perfection. And, as you could see, half of the cherub is perfect and bright, the other half is decayed and fallen into ruin, with a bloody tear running down the face. Every thing and every person has two sides: one is perfect and the other is its sham…this is our sham of perfection. What are your plans for the near future? Lorenzo: We're going to prepare our next album, and we're already at a good point with that. Maybe it will have a more direct impact, without sacrificing the melody. For now we're going to spread 'Sham Of Perfection' around the whole universe, and a world tour will be the seal for our plans, because we want that everyone can hear our music, and look inside our souls, through our melodies. I hope to see you live somewhere soon! Lorenzo: Thanks a lot to you! I enjoyed this interview. Maybe we'll meet again on stage around the world. Thanks for giving us the chance to speak to the world through this interview. Interview taken by Vera. This interview was published in Lords of Metal in July 2006. Buona lettura a tutti voi... Ciao Laura e benvenuta su Heavy-Metal.it Grazie mille per quest'intervista! Laura: Ciao Daniele! Come va? Copyright © 2000-2009 Tystnaden.com - All rights reserved. Inoltre sarete a supporto di qualche nome famoso oppure no? Laura: Grazie a te, davvero, Daniele! Grazie ancora Daniele! Ciao ciao. Interview taken by Daniele Amerio. This interview was published in Heavy-Metal.it in July 2006. Eutk.net [it] "Sham of Perfection" ha avuto una gestazione molto lunga. Copyright © 2000-2009 Tystnaden.com - All rights reserved. Laura, molte recensioni e la vostra casa discografica stessa, tirano in ballo i soliti nomi: Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, e così via. E cosa rispondi a chi (ingiustamente) ti presenta come l'ennesima cantante femminile? è un pochino riduttivo, no? E come progetti imminenti?
