eing a leader means, above
all, getting there ahead of
the others. This is virtually
a rule for Antonio Carraro, the
great designer name for special
tractors, a top trademark in Italy
and on the world scene for compact 4WD tractors with engines
ranging from 20 to 100 HP. These
machines continue to offer endusers the highest levels of performance and comfort in operation
in keeping with the company’s
constant search for a different and
unique style. And these end-users
have grown steadily over time in
number as well as type thanks to
the extreme versatility of the tractors created by the Campodarsego manufacturer. The flexibility of these machines takes
them beyond the boundary of
specialized agriculture to make
them suitable for successful use
in many other areas, transforming
them into unique machines for
ground care, that is, the maintenance of public green areas and
professional utilization for sports
facilities, road maintenance and
urban cleaning jobs. These are the
qualities which have made it possible for Antonio Carraro to take
over a large number of new niche
markets.
Multifunctional, moreover, has been
the key word and fundamental
concept since 1910 when nineteen-year-old blacksmith Giovanni
Carraro, full of imagination, began
designing and building for the first
time a multipurpose agricultural
machine able to plow, seed, harrow and cover simultaneously.
This revolutionary prototype contained the seeds of a bright future
during which the smithy was transformed into industrial plant for the
production of seeders and, later,
traditional tractors.
Then in 1960, Antonio, Giovanni
Carraro’s youngest son, founded
Antonio Carraro di Giovanni and
decided to focus on the sector of
compact multifunction tractors
capable of performing a wide
range of jobs and, over the years,

Il trattore compatto SRX, modello
articolato della serie Ergit, è provvisto di
guida reversibile, carreggiata molto stretta
(fino a 1.000 mm) e quattro grandi ruote
motrici uguali. Nella foto, il 9400 con
motore da 85 CV/The Ergit compact and

un luminoso futuro in cui la
bottega artigianale lascia il
posto ad un complesso industriale che produce seminatrici e, successivamente, trattori tradizionali. Poi nel 1960
Antonio, il più giovane dei
figli di Giovanni Carraro,
fonda la “Antonio Carraro
di Giovanni”, scegliendo di
concentrarsi sul settore dei
trattori compatti sempre
con l’idea “congenita” di dar
vita a macchine multifunzionali, in grado di compiere i
lavori più disparati, ed incrementando via via il numero
dei modelli. Il successo non
si fa attendere molto, a premiare il valore e la carica innovativa di un’azienda che
fin dai primi anni Settanta
ha avuto un grande punto di
forza nel suo reparto R&D
(Ricerca e Sviluppo), autentica fucina di progetti per la
messa a punto di prodotti
ogni volta tecnologicamente
all’avanguardia ed originali.

il senso di marcia per lavorare su due fronti. Una caratteristica perfezionata e
portata allo stesso tempo ad
un livello di estrema semplicità con il sistema RGS
macchina, aumentando precisione e qualità esecutiva
dei lavori tanto nell’ambito
dell’agricoltura specializzata quanto nel settore civile.
Forte della sua esperienza e
del suo ingente know-how,
l’Antonio Carraro vanta
oggi dimensioni da grande
realtà industriale: 120.000
metri quadri di superficie
aziendale di cui 40.000 dedicati ad ospitare moderne
linee produttive, 400 addetti (dei quali 35 impiegati nel
reparto R&D al quale è destinato l’8% del fatturato

to boost the number of models offered. Success was not late in
coming as a reward for the value
and innovative drive of the company with, beginning back in the early 1960s, the strong point of a Research and Development department which acted as a forge for
turning out designs and complete
original products always at the
leading edge technologically, like
Actio full chassis with oscillation.
Another leading leitmotiv running
through the sterling progress of the
Veneto manufacturer has been the
reversibility of the drivers cab to allow the operator to quickly reverse
direction for work on two fronts.
This feature has been perfected
and, at the same time, taken to a
level of great simplicity with the
RGS, the RevGuide System, with
which the entire drive console can
be rotated to reverse the direction
of drive with the release of a safety
lock, an operation which takes five
seconds to open new options for
the use of the machine, increasing
the precision and quality of work
in specialized agriculture as well
as for jobs in the civil sector.
On the strength of great experience and considerable know-how,
Antonio Carraro can claim the
scale of a big industry: 120,000
square meters of area taken up by
the company, with modern production lines accounting for 40,000
square meters, a workforce of 400
which includes 35 on the staff of
the R&D Department (with an allocation of 8% of sales annually),
four branch operations abroad (in
Spain, in California in the United
States, Australia and Santiago in
Chile) and consolidated turnover in
2007 of 92 million euros.

All’interno dello stabilimento Carraro è stata
adottata la filosofia di lavoro kai-zen/ At

Alongside the selection of specialized machines for vineyards, orchards, greenhouses and nurseries, are the Antonio Carraro
Tractor People products, which
account for 60% of total turnover,
and the professional machines in
the Groundcare line, which provides another 30% in sales. Then
there is the Antonio Carraro Family, outstanding in 2007, the “extended family” of products distributed by the Veneto company
which are selected from those
manufactured by the finest companies in the world on the basis of
superior quality and technological
content. An example is the 4x4
off-road transporter Carryall built
by the U.S. company ClubCar.
The vehicle is powered by diesel,
gasoline or electric motor with 10
to 20 HP. Also in the line are the
traditional Agriplus open field
tractors built by Carraro Spa.
Though specialized agriculture will
remain the core business for the
company, the Groundcare range
is expected to show good growth
with the arrival of a new series of
articulated machines in various
models and ranges of power.
“We feel the need to provide a
range dedicated to the maintenance of sports grounds, golf
courses and rugby and football
pitches, a sector we believe in a
lot, to flank our multipurpose
Rondò with other mowers that
can work on grass with the same
ease and speed in summer as on
snowy surfaces in winter”.
The new Groundcare features will
be presented in November under
the lights at EIMA International,
and the Bologna exhibition will also

serre, vivai prodotti dalla

People, che continuano a
formare il 60% del fatturato
aziendale complessivo, ed ai
mezzi professionali della linea Groundcare che concorre per il 30% al giro
d’affari, spicca dal 2007 la
gamma “Antonio Carraro
Family”, la “famiglia allar-
gata” di prodotti distribuiti
dalla casa veneta, complementari ai trattori di sua
produzione, selezionati tra
quelli dei migliori costruttori mondiali secondo canoni
di altissima qualità e contenuto tecnologico: proposte
come i transporter fuoristrada Carryall dell’americana ClubCar, con propulsori diesel, benzina ed elettrici dai 10 ai 20 CV, e i tradizionali trattori Agriplus
da campo aperto prodotti
dalla Carraro spa.
Se l’agricoltura specializzata
resterà anche negli anni a venire il core business dell’azienda una buona crescita è
prevista per il Groundcare,
che sta per essere corroborato dall’offerta di una nuova
serie di mezzi per la manutenzione del verde articolata
in vari modelli di diverse fasce di potenza: «sentivamo
l’esigenza di implementare la
gamma dedicata alla manutenzione degli impianti sportivi, campi da golf, rugby e
calcio, un settore nel quale
crediamo molto, affiancando
altri tosaerba al nostro polivalente Rondò,che può lavorare con la stessa facilità e rapidità sui manti erbosi in
estate e sulle superfici innevate in inverno». Le novità

usual, for quality and technology.
On the company front, the Campodarsego company has again anticipated deadlines to now become
the first in the tractor sector to
comply with European Union Tier III
emissions standards across its entire range in choosing Yanmar engines which feature not only reduced emissions but lower noise
levels as well.
Operator comfort is against given
top priority in the new tractors, in
accordance with the Antonio Carraro precise manufacturing philosophy seen applied through the
wide range of cabs, beginning with
the pressurized Super Low Profile,
which provides automobile-type
comfort in spite of its small size,
and on to the Star Light Cab, spacious and comfortable, equipped
with latest generation heating/air
conditioning, a roof which can be
easily lifted off and two windows allowing an inside view of the wheels.
Well aware of the challenges of the
future, the company embarked in
2003 on a three-year internal restructurization plan aimed at a
more modern and efficient organization. Assisting was Porsche
Consulting, one of the world’s
leading specializes in corporate reorganization, chosen by Marcello
Carraro, president of the company.
Thus, with the help of the Stuttgart
experts, the company’s philosophy
and work system were revolutionized under the heading “kai-zen”,
an Eastern term meaning continuous small-step improvement extended to all activities. Liliana Carraro explained, “Also on the assembly line, now the only one and
flexible for all our products, continuous evolution is seen due to the
changes and improvements applied weekly by the workers, and
each one is now responsible for his
own work and the goals to reach”.
