From the estate’s top-shelf line, the 2011 Alto Adige Pinot
Bianco Sanct Valentin delivers a great sense of inner energy and momentum. Aromas of white melon and pear are
delicately played against the creamy substance and rich
texture of the wine. Ultimately, this white wine awards a
greater experience to the palate compared to the nose and
this is not an easy achievement. The wine is understated at
first sniff, but makes a resounding point about the pristine
quality of its fruit as its final point. Cantina Produttori San
Michele Appiano (St. Michael-Eppan in German) is one of the
best-performing cooperatives in Alto Adige. It counts 350
members who farm 380 hectares and produce 2.5 million
bottles annually. This batch of new releases is impressive
and, as always, the Sanct Valentin line is particularly deserving of accolades.

Drink 2014 - 2018
The 2012 Alto Adige Pinot Bianco Schulthauser is a great
value option that could easily be served as an appetizer
or first course wine at an elegant dinner party. Peach and
fresh pear blend seamlessly within the wine’s natural
richness and round consistency. I love the weight the wine
imparts in the mouth: It’s not light, nor is it too heavy. That
careful measuring makes this one of the most food-friendly
options presented by this estate. Cantina Produttori San

The popular white grape is taken to great levels of intensity
and purity in the 2012 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Anger. The
wine is aged in large oak cask and stainless steel in equal
proportions. This aging routine lends both a sense of aromatic purity (thanks to the easy stainless-steel vinification)
and textural richness thanks to the barrel. The slightest
dustings of cinnamon and toasted almond appear before
ripe peach, melon and freshly cut pear. The wine offers
much more in terms of complexity and nuance than is normally rendered by this workhorse grape. Cantina Produttori

The 2011 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Sanct Valentin is heavier
and more elaborate than the two base Pinot Grigios and
doesn’t offer the same aromatic brilliance. Instead, barrique
and tonneaux aging give the wine ripe tones of lemon curd,
candied apricot and sweet almond paste. It is, however, built
to last longer. Cantina Produttori San Michele Appiano (St.

Drink 2014 - 2019
The 2010 Alto Adige Pinot Nero Sanct Valentin is so much
fun to drink. The energy and enthusiasm of the wine are
contagious as it evolves slowly to reveal forest fruit, wild
raspberries and almond skin. The wine presents its best
assets with precision and care. This is especially true of the
mouthfeel, where the wine delivers a great sense of acidity,
balance and soft silkiness. Cantina Produttori San Michele

The 2012 Alto Adige Sauvignon Sanct Valentin is the latest
edition in a line of wines that, year after year, are among my
favorite expressions of Sauvignon Blanc all’italiana. The purity of the fruit aromas and those tonic green herb aromas
are delightful and long-lasting. Just 10% of the wine sees
oak contact and that’s just enough to add to the natural heft
and momentum of the mouthfeel. This is a striking vintage
with a deep inner sense of clarity and focus. Cantina Produttori San Michele Appiano (St. Michael-Eppan in German)
