TO THE CENTRE OF SPACE An astronomical observatory to touch the planets: South Tyrol transforms itself into Astrovillage and reveals the secrets of the heavens on an educational itinerary that has no equal in Europe I t would be almost impossible to get closer than this to the sky. Yet, in Val D’Ega in the heart of the Dolomites, they insisted on finding the means and the mode to draw even nearer to the stars and the planets. They transformed a vacation in the UNESCO World Heritage site into a voyage to the centre of space. Every Thursday evening, it is possible to reserve a guided visit to the only Solar and Astronomical Observatory in South Tyrol at San Valentino in Campo, accessible by a footpath. Along the trail, the distances of the solar system are set out at a scale of one to one billion. Upon arriving at the observatory, at night visitor can observe the After arriving at the Observatory, space enthusiasts can take in two great shows in scale 1:1 billion: at night, the celestial hemispheres; during the day the activity of the sun (for info and reservations www.valdega.com) 88 heavens; during the day, the extraordinary activity of the sun. Situated in the Municipality of Cornedo, the new Planetarium is the only one of its kind in South Tyrol. Unlike the Astronomical Observatory, here the universe is revealed by means of extremely precise 3D optical instruments accompanied by an excellent acoustical system. The dream of exploring distant places considered inaccessible such as Mars and Venus, becomes a reality in a fascinating simulation room. There is such a desire for stars that the towns of Collepietra and of San Valentino in the municipality of Cornedo, have transformed themselves into an Astrovillage, the first in Europe, where everything is planned to facilitate an extraordinary view of the starry heavens. It is as if the whole universe had reserved a vacation in Val D’Ega, in order to take the secrets of the world of astronomy to one of the places that is closest to the sky. Walking through the two settlements, visitors will encounter meridians that decorate the house façades and gardens; they may stop to eat in restaurants that propose an astrological infopoint on their menus and offer a telescope to catch a glance of the deep universe. The library has all the necessary resources to deepen astronomical notions. In addition, every Friday until 31 August during the new star excursion, a special day awaits explorers of the heavenly dome: they can observe the sun through a telescope and meanwhile learn about the stars and planets, discovering more about the celestial bodies in 3D. ■
