Wir freuen uns, die erste Ausstellung von Norbert Schwontkowski in der Schweiz anzukündigen.
Schwontkowski, 1949 in Bremen geboren, gehört zu den wichtigsten deutschen Malern. Sein
Werk findet vor allem in den letzten Jahren außerordentliche internationale Beachtung durch die
Kunstkritik ebenso wie den Kunstmarkt und ist in wichtigen internationalen privaten und
öffentlichen Sammlungen präsent.
Die in zarten Erd- und Rottönen gehaltenen Bilder sprechen von der Poesie des Alltags. Dazu
benötigt er nicht mit Details aufgeladene Bildräume, sondern er erzählt mit minimalen Mitteln von
seltsamen Zusammenkünften und Begegnungen in Welten, die den Charme des Surrealen
evozieren... Titel und Bild sind untrennbar miteinander verbunden. Die Ironie ist der Inspizient,
der den Bildern gebrochene Leichtigkeit verschafft. Keine Tragik ohne Komik, kein Erfolg ohne
Scheitern. Oder ist es umgekehrt? Das Werk Schwontkowskis richtet sich wie ein innerer
Pulsschlag an die lebensnotwendigen Gegensätze des Lebens (Karin Pernegger, 2007).
Immer wieder tauchen einsame Figuren auf. Etwa ein Mönch im Waschsalon, ein gescheiterter
Bankräuber oder gar der Papst, der mit seinem Papamobil auf Abwege geraten ist. Karge
Bäume in einsamen Landschaften, Mondlicht und Laternenschein vermitteln eine Atmosphäre
der winterlichen Unbehaustheit. Häufig bevölkern auch Tiere die Szenerie. Schiffe lassen an
Sehnsucht, Fernweh und die von der Nähe zum Meer geprägte norddeutsche Heimat
Schwontkowskis denken. Übereinandergeschichtete exotische Stadtsilhouetten in leuchtenden
Farben formieren sich neuerdings zu Panoramen verdichteter Lebensenergie. Oft absurde und
gleichzeitig humorvolle Bildfindungen kennzeichnen Norbert Schwontkowskis ganz
unverwechselbaren Stil. Beim Betrachten seiner Bilder glaubt man sich unversehens im Kino
wieder zu finden: in einem assoziationsreichen Film, der den sanften Schleier
traumwandlerischer Versunkenheit über den Betrachter legt.
Norbert Schwontkowski trägt stets ein Skizzenbuch mit sich. Hunderte davon hat er bereits mit
Alltagsbeobachtungen gefüllt. Der Maler ist sowohl neugierig reisender Flaneur als auch
aufmerksamer Beobachter der großen Bühnen wie der kleinen Nebenschauplätze des Lebens.
Sein Blick ist frei von Zynismus und Bitterkeit - Selbstironie und ein fein austarierter
Galgenhumor jedoch gehören zu seinen Stilmitteln. Schwontkowskis feinsinniger Humor spiegelt
sich auch in seinen pointierten, oft literarisch anmutenden Bildtiteln wieder.
Norbert Schwontkowskis Bilder entstehen in Nass-in-Nass Technik aus einem speziellen, oft
wechselnden Gemisch aus Ölfarben, Kreiden, Kupferfarbe, Leinöl, Eisenchlorid, Wasser und
auch schon mal handelsüblichem Tee. Die häufig dick mit dem Spachtel aufgetragenen und über
die Leinwandbegrenzung ragenden Farbschichten verleihen ihnen eine objekthafte Präsenz.
Seine Malerei erfuhr große Aufmerksamkeit, als er, auf Einladung von Massimilano Gioni und
Maurizio Cattellan, seine Bilder 2006 während der 4. Berlin Biennale in seiner damaligen
Zweitwohnung in der Berliner Auguststraße präsentierte. Sammler und Kuratoren aus aller Welt
entdeckten die bisher international noch nicht bekannten Werke des damals 57-Jährigen in dem
bescheiden gehaltenen, wohnlichen Ambiente. Im Jahr zuvor hatte die Bremer Kunsthalle
Norbert Schwontkowski bereits mit einer großen Retrospektive geehrt.

We are pleased to announce the first exhibition in Switzerland of Norbert Schwontkowski,
one of the most important German painters. Born in Bremen 1949 he has regularly
exhibited in galleries and public institutions throughout Europe since the late 1970s and in
the last years he has obtained a vaster international echo. His work is represented in
museums including the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Museum of Fine Arts in
Boston. Currently working in Bremen and Berlin, he has produced a body of paintings
whose subtly powerful blend of melancholic quietism and gentle irony has evolved
independently of shifting fashions in contemporary art.
Schwontkowski’s pictures operate very discreetly on the naivety of children's drawings, on
the cleverness of caricatures and the power of a magical image. It is mostly simple figures
and objects, man, woman, moon, lamp script, boats that dominate his works. They stand or
drift in front of transitory colorful rooms, prepared to dissipate at any moment. A stream of
emerging images, some melancholic, some ironic, which in silence bear witness to human
existence. The artistic treatment of the matter - a mixture of substances consisting of
linseed oil, pulverized pigments, metal oxide, water, binding colors and bone glue,
accentuate the scantiness and simplicity of the seized moments.
Schwontkowski personally hand mixes pigments and paints for his works, and incorporates
various materials (like copper, gold and marble dust) to create different textures and
finishes on his canvases. His palette of pale earth tones, blacks and grays creates a muted,
subdued atmosphere, while his carefully worked surfaces and minimal gestures
demonstrate his engagement with the history of painting. Populated with small objects and
slight human figures, his paintings create a distant world, immersed in a dimension that is
still and timeless. His fine and dark color range, the immobile objects, the eccentric and
surreal personalities, make one think more of Morandi, to which he marries, by a strange
joke of destiny, the black and grotesque humor of Hieronymus Bosch.
Norbert Schwontkowski makes his own way between the paths of modernism and
postmodernism. He has no need for programmatic statements; he simply paints as if the
taboos of modernism had never existed. Rich in associations, his work references a wide
array of painterly traditions, including but going beyond those of Romantic and Japanese
art. In each of his exhibitions the viewer can sense what it means to have the whole range
of artistic techniques at one's disposal.
Schwontkowski's paintings are surreal and cryptic. They seem to simultaneously want to
tell a story and remain mysterious. As the artist revealed to Brooklyn Rail in a recent
interview, "most of my paintings come from a dream, which is never fixed. It is more like the
feeling when you are traveling on a train without a destination, or in the early morning when
you just wake, when you are still in between a dream and the thoughts of what you have to
do for the day-like what sort of shirt and pants you will wear and who you’ll see for lunch,
and so on. Essentially, it comes from a moment when there is not so much control of your
thoughts or what you could actually see. Your eyes are open and you think you can see
whatever’s in front of you, but in fact there is something from this corner of your vision,
which somehow melts together and becomes something you can’t identify whatsoever. I
think this is the way poetry works, by allowing things to come together and bloom and
become something else, something fresh and alive."

Siamo felici di annunciare la mostra di Norbert Schwontkowski, uno dei più importanti pittori
tedeschi contemporanei. Nato a Brema nel 1949, dalla fine degli anni Settanta ha esposto in
gallerie private ed istituzioni pubbliche in tutta Europa. Le sue opere sono presenti in musei
importanti, quali il Guggenheim di New York e il Museum of Fine Arts di Boston.
I dipinti di Schwontkowski operano con l'ingenuità e l’essenzialità dei disegni dei bambini, la
capacità caricaturale e la potenza di un’immagine magica e ironica al contempo. Lo spazio, i
limiti fisici dell’immagine pittorica sembrano deposti e che queste pitture possano espandersi
nella nostra contemplazione come porte aperte a nuove dimensioni. Da un lato i soggetti
rappresentati e dall’altro l’utilizzo di colori marroni, neri, grigi e gialli chiari prolungano
l’attenzione, non limitando più il nostro sguardo alla condizione temporale, annullando quelle
coordinate spaziali dell’oggetto che lo rendono fisicamente vincolato. L’attrazione metafisica di
queste immagini però non è mai citazione aulica, ma presenta un approccio ironico e
disincantato all’oggetto o ai soggetti rappresentati. Sembrerebbero chiederci di essere presi
seriamente in considerazione e al contempo si mostrano in un modo che suggerisce il sorriso.
Le sue opere sono per lo più dominate da figure e oggetti semplici come un uomo, una donna, la
luna, lampade, barche. Si accumulano davanti a transitorie stanze colorate, pronte a dissiparsi in
qualsiasi momento. Un flusso di immagini emergenti, alcune malinconiche, alcune ironiche che
silenziosamente testimoniano l'esistenza umana.
Schwontkowski mescola personalmente a mano i pigmenti e le vernici per le sue opere,
aggiungendo diversi materiali come rame, oro e polvere di marmo in modo da creare diverse
trame e finiture sulle sue tele. La tavolozza di colori che utilizza, dalla terra pallida ai neri e grigi,
crea un'atmosfera sommessa e smorzata, mentre le superfici sono accuratamente lavorate e
gesti minimi dimostrano il suo legame con la storia della pittura.
I suoi dipinti, popolati da piccoli oggetti e esili figure umane, creano un mondo lontano immerso
in una dimensione immobile e senza tempo. La sua gamma di colori delicati e scuri, gli oggetti
immobili, le personalità eccentriche e surreali fanno pensare a Morandi, al quale egli unisce,
come uno strano scherzo del destino, l'umorismo nero e grottesco di Hieronymus Bosch.
Norbert Schwontkowski si fa strada tra i sentieri del modernismo e del postmodernismo. Egli non
ha bisogno di dichiarazioni programmatiche, dipinge semplicemente come se i tabù del
modernismo non fossero mai esistiti. Ricco di associazioni, il suo lavoro fa riferimento a una
vasta gamma di tradizioni pittoriche, includendo ma anche andando oltre a quelle dell' arte
romantica e giapponese. In tutte le sue mostre lo spettatore può percepire il significato di avere a
propria disposizione tutta la gamma delle tecniche artistiche.
I dipinti di Schwontkowski sono surreali e criptici, sembrano voler contemporaneamente
raccontare una storia e rimanere misteriosi. Come l'artista ha rivelato in una recente intervista al
Brooklyn Rail: "La maggior parte dei miei quadri provengono da un sogno, che non è mai
immobile. È più come la sensazione di quando si viaggia su un treno senza destinazione, o
come quando al mattino presto appena svegli si è ancora tra il sogno e il pensiero di quello che
si dovrà fare durante il giorno, come quali camicia e pantaloni si indosseranno, chi si vedrà per il
pranzo e così via. Essenzialmente, si tratta di un momento in cui non si ha pieno controllo dei
propri pensieri o di quello che è effettivamente visibile. Gli occhi sono aperti e si pensa di poter
vedere ciò che si ha di fronte, ma in realtà c'è un qualcosa da questo angolo della visione che in
qualche modo si fonde diventando qualcosa che non è possibile identificare. Penso che questo
sia il modo in cui funziona la poesia: consente alle cose di riunirsi, fiorire e diventare qualcosa
d'altro, qualcosa di fresco e vivo."
